Queensland’s newest major public hospital in almost a decade has opened west of Brisbane. But the Mater facility has come under criticism for not offering contraception, abortions, or voluntary assisted dying.

00:01A ribbon cut with the hope to cut patient wait times.
00:06This will also ease a lot of pressure in what is a growing corridor.
00:09The new Martyr Springfield Hospital, west of Brisbane, houses 186 beds with almost 1,000 staff.
00:17It's expected to provide care for around 185,000 people annually,
00:23servicing one of the country's fastest growing areas and relieving the Ipswich Hospital.
00:28Emergency, maternity, paediatric care, it is a world class hospital.
00:33Better services, a full suite of services with full clinician involvement.
00:38But the hospital won't provide contraception, abortions or voluntary assisted dying services.
00:44We're a Catholic health care operator and as such we have transfer pathways
00:49that we help that patient access the services they require.
00:54The Premier clarifying other public hospitals can deliver that care.
00:58Those services still exist.
01:00Advocates say it's distressing.
01:02We believe any publicly funded institution should be providing that
01:06and no barrier should exist for pregnant people in accessing termination and contraception.
01:14The Springfield Hospital builds on Martyr's other public facility here in South Brisbane.
01:20The Premier has indicated his support for more private investment in Queensland's health system.
01:27It'll never be in lieu of investing in public health.
01:31It'll be in conjunction with and if you do that you can get really good bang for your buck.
