European governments slam Israel's treatment of flotilla activists as 'unacceptable'

The Global Sumud Flotilla set sail from Turkey last week in the latest attempt by activists to breach Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory.

00:01Officials across Europe have slammed Israel's treatment of activists arrested from a Gaza-bound
00:08aid flotilla after the Israeli Minister of National Security posted a video of them
00:13bound and forced to kneel. The video was published on Ben Gavir's ex-account and was
00:19captioned with the words, Welcome to Israel. Italy's Prime Minister Giorgio Maloney called
00:25for the immediate release of any detained Italian citizens and demanded an apology from Israel.
00:32France and Portugal have denounced Ben Gavir's actions and summoned Israel's ambassador to
00:38their respective countries. Spain also summoned Israel's envoy to Spain, as its foreign minister
00:44condemned the treatment of the activists as monstrous. Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee
00:50said she was appalled and shocked by the video and demanded the release of all
00:55detainees, among who is the sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly. The video also
01:01drew a strong domestic reaction, with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying it
01:07was, quote, not in line with Israel's values and norms. The roughly 430 detained activists
01:14had set sail from Turkey last week as part of the global Samud flotilla in the latest attempt
01:20to breach Israel's blockade of the Palestinian territory. Israel controls all entry points
01:26to Gaza, which is suffering from severe shortages of food, medicine and other essential supplies.
01:33Aid deliveries to the enclave have often been blocked entirely.
