In February of 1970, four young hippies walked into Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, California and the rest is music and cultural history. LoveSong’s music and the music of a few other emerging pioneering Christian artists would revolutionize popular music, create a new music genre, and become the driving force behind what Time magazine would call, “The Jesus Revolution”. LoveSong would become the first Christian band of renown, set new Christian music recording standards, help shatter the glass ceiling of what was acceptable to be played in church, and create a musical legacy that endures to this day.

00:00Love Song was a band that was a bunch of hippies in the right place at the right time.
00:06If you were in 1968 America, the world was completely unraveling.
00:11Social economic disaster, political disaster, a lot like it is today. All kinds of instability.
00:18The ground was shifting like crazy. Everybody was experimenting with different religions and drugs.
00:27This is a culture that connected through music.
00:31As that movement began to unravel...
00:35Everybody talked about peace and love.
00:37There was a lot of disillusionment.
00:38All the things we were experimenting with, sex, drugs and rock and roll, it all just came to a dead
00:44end.
00:44It was a convergence of all kinds of things happening all at once.
00:47That set up hundreds of thousands of people to be open for the answer to come in a package you
00:54didn't expect.
00:57I didn't realize it, but I walked right into the middle of a spiritual awakening.
01:06Hundreds of thousands of people, if not millions, got saved during that Jesus movement.
01:12The Jesus People movement and Love Song in particular impacted me.
01:16It's like you're one and Jesus was in the midst of this.
01:19It was wild.
01:20And so when God poured his spirit out, he used music.
01:31The key was the music drove it.
01:33This is awesome!
01:37Love Song played an important role in changing the tide of Christian music.
01:43They were actually pioneers of writing songs that spoke to people outside the walls of the church.
01:48Love Song had this thing.
01:54You could feel the presence of God in the music.
01:58We started singing and people's hearts would change.
02:01Wow!
02:01These guys are like a combination between the Beatles and the Beach Boys.
02:05They were it.
02:06They broke the ground for what later became contemporary Christian music.
02:12I'm not really sure that I would be doing what I'm doing today.
02:15It hadn't been for Love Song.
02:16We were rock and roll guys.
02:21With a heart to tell our generation that Jesus is Lord.
02:25They gave us, in many ways, the initial soundtrack of the Jesus movement.
02:30Really, it was a thing of God.
