00:00:04I
00:00:33I've been shot. You've been shot? Yeah, someone's just shot my own car. Where have you been shot? In the
00:00:42side. In the side? No. Keep talking to me.
00:00:47I'm trying to get some help to you. I'm trying to get some officers to come to you to help
00:00:53you, okay?
00:00:58Can you hear me? Can you hear me?
00:01:07Seconds. That's all it takes for a brutal crime to be committed.
00:01:14My dad's found his daughter on the floor in an absolute pool of blood.
00:01:18But no suspect disappears without a trace.
00:01:21One here. One here.
00:01:23A clue. A fragment. Something is always left behind.
00:01:28It's just finding that inevitable mistake and making the most of it.
00:01:31Do you know anyone who would want to shoot you?
00:01:34In the West Midlands, the major crime team follows every lead.
00:01:39You can see the holes in the curtains just as the bullet see comes through.
00:01:43And then we've got the damage in the coving.
00:01:46Specialist detectives trained to spot the most subtle of clues.
00:01:50It can be little things.
00:01:52You see what they were wearing.
00:01:53What kind of haircut they had on that day.
00:01:56Piecing together the truth.
00:01:59Oh, that's a good one.
00:02:01And never giving up.
00:02:03Oh, please, show me your hands now!
00:02:04Show me your hands!
00:02:05Until those responsible are brought to justice.
00:02:10We've got to be there, dealing with it quickly.
00:02:16Our response will be as robust as the offence itself.
00:02:19Yes!
00:02:21Yes!
00:02:21Yes!
00:02:23Yes!
00:02:23Yes!
00:02:23Yes!
00:02:24Yes!
00:02:42There's two bullet holes through the windows.
00:02:45There must be more inside.
00:02:47They found bullet fragment inside the house.
00:02:50One fragment.
00:02:51One fragment.
00:02:53In Dudley, a quiet suburban street has become the centre of a shocking and violent major
00:02:59crime investigation.
00:03:01All we really know is, at about 22 minutes past midnight last night, a call came in from
00:03:08a lady who'd been in a house with her three children.
00:03:11Two bullets had come through the window, and one of them had struck her in the leg.
00:03:15She was then taken straight to hospital, and the scene was preserved overnight.
00:03:20DS Lucy Mooney and DC Charlotte Smith are first to arrive at the scene.
00:03:25One in the door and two in the window.
00:03:30There's nothing else, is there?
00:03:32That would be the one that's caught the lady in the hip, presumably she's stood right on
00:03:37the other side.
00:03:37I mean, that makes me think as well.
00:03:39Did I knock the door, and she's gone to answer it?
00:03:43I'd say at least 90% of our jobs have firearms involved in them in one way, shape or form.
00:03:49Hello?
00:03:51But what makes this case different is that we've got a victim, a 30-year-old mother, and
00:03:58she was in her own home, where she should feel safe with her children, and she was shot.
00:04:04And she survived by luck.
00:04:08It's gone right into the top there, look.
00:04:11Oh, yeah.
00:04:13It's hit the wall and potentially bounced into the floor.
00:04:15I was going to say, where was the other one?
00:04:17It's literally in the middle of the...
00:04:18That's the...
00:04:21Well, that's not even the case, is it?
00:04:22Is it?
00:04:23That's the bullet.
00:04:23That's the actual bullet.
00:04:25Yeah, that's the actual bullet.
00:04:27So, you can see the holes in the curtains just about as well as the bullets have come through,
00:04:33and then we've got one quite obvious marking the wall there, and then the searching officers
00:04:41have removed that piece of coving, so they could obviously see the damage in the coving
00:04:46and the bullets have been recovered from in there somewhere.
00:04:50They've got to have been on foot, haven't they?
00:04:51They've got to have got out of that car.
00:04:52But then where's the casings unless it was a revolver?
00:04:55But if it's a revolver you've shot once, you've then got to move the...
00:04:58...shoot again to get the same place.
00:05:02Yeah, but just the angle of it.
00:05:03Yeah, I know what you mean.
00:05:05But then if they've done it on foot, where's the casings?
00:05:08Unless they've been smart enough to pick them up.
00:05:13Bullet holes and a single fragment are the only evidence detectives have to work with.
00:05:19Somebody's got urban in the garden.
00:05:20Unless there's two guns.
00:05:21Unless I've done that one first and then done the windows.
00:05:24With no obvious motive for the shooting, Lucy and Charlotte pieced together what happened.
00:05:32So I went and spoke to Dad, and it's a young lady and three children that live inside the property.
00:05:38She's got up in the middle of the night just to go and get herself a cold drink,
00:05:41come down to the front door, and then she's been shot.
00:05:46My dad's been called by one of the children and gone over and found his daughter on the floor in
00:05:52an absolute pool of blood and she thought she was dying.
00:05:56He's saying his daughter's got no issue with anybody.
00:05:59She literally just takes the kids to school and her life revolves around her small children by the sounds of
00:06:03it.
00:06:06At this time, looking at the victim herself and her family, there's nothing to suggest any reason or any ongoing
00:06:15disputes with anybody that would cause something of this magnitude to happen.
00:06:22Hello, my name's Lucy, I'm from the police and the investigation team that's dealing with the echo.
00:06:28No, what it was, I heard such a bang last night, about quarter past twelve, sounded like steel, being knocked
00:06:34or something like that.
00:06:35Okie dokie, thank you very much for your information.
00:06:40That might assist us.
00:06:42I don't know, I'd just like to mention that she hasn't got access to the CCTV, it's just...
00:06:44Oh, wow.
00:06:46Yeah, is there any way we can get in to look at the cameras?
00:06:48He's got it all on his phone, and there's no way he can get up here today.
00:06:52Oh, OK.
00:06:54CCTV opposite the victim's house could give detectives a clearer picture of the events that unfolded.
00:07:02Hello.
00:07:03Got a CCTV?
00:07:05Er, the barber won't be back till tomorrow.
00:07:08We'll just have to press the matter, because we're going to need that for a while now.
00:07:14Leading the investigation from Perry Bar Police Station is Detective Inspector Francis Nock.
00:07:19If there's anyone else who can come and just let us in.
00:07:21We can come and collect the keys from him.
00:07:23We can access systems ourselves, we won't take anything.
00:07:26We'll have to try and figure it out with him somehow.
00:07:29OK.
00:07:30It's in a bit.
00:07:32The gaffer wants us to get in there, one way or another.
00:07:36CCTV is almost always the major line of inquiry and the most important source of evidence.
00:07:42You know, we're looking for vehicles making off at speed, we're looking for people running away.
00:07:46We're looking for that first starting point as to who is likely to be responsible.
00:07:52Illegal firearms carry a constant risk of injury or death.
00:07:57At any one time, an estimated 1,000 illegal firearms are on the streets of England and Wales.
00:08:05Most of these are smuggled from Eastern Europe across the Channel, hidden in vehicles and parcels.
00:08:15Some start as legal blank firing guns, bought online for less than £100 and converted into lethal weapons.
00:08:27A genuine handgun can fetch around £3,000 on the black market.
00:08:32Many offenders dumping them quickly after use.
00:08:36In the last year, almost 250 have been taken off the streets of the West Midlands.
00:08:51While the team wait to see if the barber's shop camera yields any results,
00:08:56lead CCTV coordinator Rosie Downs is reviewing footage uploaded by one of the victim's neighbours.
00:09:02So it doesn't point at the offence location itself, however it does capture audio.
00:09:07So what we hear at 00.15.33 hours is five loud bangs.
00:09:24Followed by an acceleration of a vehicle.
00:09:31The audio of the shots confirms that a discharge happened.
00:09:35So you couple that CCTV with the ballistics that were found at the address
00:09:39and you can say five shots were fired at the house.
00:09:43That's really important to us.
00:09:45But at the moment we don't know who's involved.
00:09:48Go back and see who's involved.
00:09:52All we can say about the people who committed this offence is
00:09:55they had access to firearms.
00:09:57So you would assume that everybody who's involved in this offence is extremely dangerous.
00:10:01You're thinking a million miles an hour about the risks.
00:10:05It's really, really frightening.
00:10:07If you don't get them quick enough, they might try again.
00:10:10If you don't get them quickly.
00:10:16What about the test?
00:10:18After all, you have to go to the hood.
00:10:34I'm going to go to the hood.
00:10:37And now who's involved in this offence is really dangerous.
00:10:39That's what I'm really looking for.
00:10:40I'm going to go to the hood the hood.
00:10:40You can't see me.
00:10:4914 hours ago, a young mother of three was shot through her front door in a brutal drive-by
00:10:54shooting on a suburban street in Dudley. Detectives have no suspects, and there's an update on
00:11:02the victim, who remains in hospital with a gunshot wound.
00:11:25What it's all about is unclear at this point in time, but the shooting of a woman in the
00:11:31middle of the night behind her own front door is an exceptionally serious incident.
00:11:35It's a real tough starting point, because we don't know whether we've got people on foot.
00:11:38We don't know if there's more than one vehicle, so that all needs to come together from a really
00:11:43determined investigation in the locality really, really quickly.
00:11:51They've got a massive dog as well, I'll tell you this for now.
00:11:54He's ferocious.
00:11:56Hunting down the footage detectives hope will capture the vehicle on camera is PC Gurpreet Singh.
00:12:02When we start looking at CCTV, the dream is you get footage of it happening, and you start
00:12:08tracking it forwards, and tracking it back, and you get your answers.
00:12:13There's no warning, mate.
00:12:16Do you know what time somebody comes back? I'm just here for the best of me, let's please.
00:12:19First days of investigations, you're dealing with people not being in, or people not wanting to
00:12:26talk to you, or gaps in your CCTV, struggling with getting you track, and it can be really,
00:12:32really frustrating, especially when the motive at the current time is still unknown.
00:12:38If I were to send you, like, a link, with some timings, just like a five-minute clip,
00:12:45would you be able to check it, and if there is anything, would you be able to send it to
00:12:48us?
00:12:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:13:01Back at the office, a file PC Singh has shared has caught the attention of CCTV lead, Rosie Downs.
00:13:34Rosie notices a detail on the car that could make it easier to spot on other cameras.
00:13:40Importantly, it's got one headlight working, one out.
00:13:45When we track cars on CCTV, a distinguishing feature on a vehicle can massively assist us with that track.
00:13:53There could be hundreds of cars on that area.
00:13:56When one's got a faulty headlight, that narrows your parameters massively.
00:14:05So, five minutes before the offence takes place, we have this vehicle coming down from the direction of Birmingham New
00:14:14Road.
00:14:15With multiple CCTV sightings of the car, Rosie turns to the team responsible for automatic number plate recognition, or ANPR.
00:14:26So, I've sent him through the times, and he's come back with a vehicle, which is hitting ANPR in the
00:14:32local area.
00:14:33There we are.
00:14:41It's passenger headlight is out, it's reportedly stolen on the 2nd of July of the day before.
00:14:47So, it definitely looks like it's going to be the car.
00:14:52The Audi S3 was stolen prior to the shooting.
00:14:56It's been 36 hours since the shots were fired, and the clock is ticking to find CCTV of the theft.
00:15:05Just to let you know, your car was used in another incident that's happened.
00:15:10People don't tend to use their own cars to commit crime, because they come straight back to them.
00:15:15So, people will steal cars, or use associates' stolen cars, to try and essentially conceal their identity from the police.
00:15:23As well as tracking down CCTV of the car theft, the team are under pressure to secure more footage from
00:15:29the street where the shots were fired.
00:15:31So, it's an Audi S3, front headlight is out.
00:15:43Now, footage from the barbershop overlooking the victim's home has finally come in.
00:15:54Take that back and zoom it in.
00:16:08The barbershop footage captures three flashes of light consistent with a muzzle flash from a gun on the passenger side
00:16:17of vehicle one.
00:16:20And then the car speeds off at exactly the same time as we have the audio of the car accelerating
00:16:26away.
00:16:27And therefore, it's given us confidence that we are following the correct vehicle.
00:16:45Every week, over 200 cars are stolen from the streets of the West Midlands.
00:16:50For organized criminals, they're targets essential to the operation.
00:16:55Moving drugs, carrying weapons, and enabling violent attacks behind clone plates that lead investigators nowhere.
00:17:05When the job's done, a network of chop shops across the region can strip and erase a vehicle within hours,
00:17:12wiping the evidence before anyone comes looking.
00:17:17But every car leaves a trail.
00:17:20ANPR cameras, forensic evidence, cell site data.
00:17:24And in the West Midlands, that trail is exactly where the investigation begins.
00:17:40Welcome to the briefing for Operation Icebox, which is an attempted motorbike shooting, took place in the early hours of
00:17:45yesterday.
00:17:46It's now 32 hours since a young mother was shot behind her own front door on a suburban street.
00:17:53She remains in hospital with life-changing injuries, and the only lead is a stolen Audi S3.
00:18:00So when you start looking at Audi S3s in the area with the headlines out, PE15 comes up.
00:18:09So last night, we put a PNC4F marker on, ARB stops only, with a strategy around it for everybody to
00:18:15be arrested.
00:18:15If anyone does come across, it's parked up, then it'll go off, and we'll get in front of the report.
00:18:20With the investigation evolving rapidly, the team's priority is locating the stolen car.
00:18:26This shows the offending vehicle being stolen.
00:18:31Detective Sergeant Lindsay Davenport has just received footage of the theft sent in by the Audi owner's neighbour.
00:18:50You can clearly see it's been lighted up as though it's been activated with the kit, rather than someone forcing
00:18:56entry to the vehicle.
00:19:14So we're trying to understand if the vehicle previous owner has kept a key, and if so, if they've got
00:19:23something to do with knowing where that car is now,
00:19:25and either that person or anyone associating with them have stolen this vehicle.
00:19:31At the moment, there's nothing to suggest any link between the registered keeper of the car and anybody else.
00:19:38However, it is a little bit suspicious that somebody appears to just walk down the road, unlock the car, and
00:19:45drive it away.
00:19:48We're keeping an open mind as to how somebody might have another key for that car.
00:19:54After the theft has taken place, we've got the ANPR hit of the last sighting of that vehicle travelling through,
00:20:02and then we've got nothing, but we're in this junction itself.
00:20:05The CCTV team continues to track the stolen Audi towards the outskirts of Dudley.
00:20:11That's the most popular route out.
00:20:13It feels strange that he'd be heading out to like Himalayan Wanborn,
00:20:16albeit if you've got a place that you're looking to dump the car, and you're in contact with somebody,
00:20:22do you leave it in the countryside?
00:20:29When you start moving into more rural areas, you have massive stretches of road that aren't lit very well,
00:20:36less cameras, houses even, if there aren't any, are really far back off the country road.
00:20:42So if they did have cameras, the chances of them catching anything is linked to none.
00:20:46With the Audi disappearing into miles of dark country roads,
00:20:50detectives may have lost their only lead in the case.
00:20:54But by rewinding the cameras, they're about to get their first glimpse of a suspect.
00:21:10Eight days ago, an Audi S3 was stolen.
00:21:13By the next night, it's at the centre of a violent attack,
00:21:17as gunmen shoot a young mother in her own home.
00:21:21I've been trapped.
00:21:23Please keep talking to me.
00:21:27Leaving her in hospital with life-changing injuries.
00:21:32Nothing scares the public more than firearms being discharged on the streets.
00:21:36When you see an innocent person injured and seriously injured as a result,
00:21:40it just goes to show the possible consequences of this type of crime.
00:21:43To be fair, it sounds like the car.
00:21:46Yeah, and his car.
00:21:47It's going to be the car, isn't it?
00:21:48Which way is it going on?
00:21:49So, it's the same.
00:21:51Led by Detective Inspector Knock,
00:21:53Major Crime Team One are hunting the Audi's trail,
00:21:56piecing together its movements in the deadly aftermath.
00:22:00It's a complete bastard, isn't it?
00:22:01It's like there is no sense to anywhere the roads go.
00:22:05Yeah.
00:22:05But the trail runs cold, the Audi seemingly vanishing into the night.
00:22:15She said it hasn't gone here or here.
00:22:17So, then we skipped to here, and it didn't pass.
00:22:21As they wait for the Audi to resurface,
00:22:24detectives rewind the clock, retracing its movements before the shooting.
00:22:29So, we got it to Weaver's Rise, which is a car park,
00:22:34not covered by CCTV, and it backs onto a canal.
00:22:3924 hours before the shooting,
00:22:42CCTV captures the Audi entering a car park off Weaver's Rise,
00:22:46around three miles from the scene of the attack.
00:22:49There's no CCTV in the car park,
00:22:51but we can see somebody walking away from it.
00:23:00The figure is believed to be the car thief,
00:23:03but for the next 23 hours,
00:23:05no one is seen entering or leaving the car park.
00:23:11Until 30 minutes before the shooting,
00:23:16when the Audi pulls out.
00:23:20Now the team faces a critical question.
00:23:23How did the driver get back to the car?
00:23:26We'd need to have a look at access points onto Weaver's Rise.
00:23:29Obviously, we noticed the canal,
00:23:31and then we start to look at the canal entrances around that,
00:23:34the theory being that somebody's been dropped off,
00:23:36walked along the canal.
00:23:39Quite quickly, we identified a location
00:23:42covering the next entrance along to the canal towpath.
00:23:47It's here that we identified a vehicle pulling up.
00:23:5910 minutes before the Audi leaves Weaver's Rise,
00:24:03CCTV captures another car pulling up
00:24:05on the opposite side of the canal.
00:24:14Three people get out.
00:24:17One stays with a vehicle.
00:24:19The other two head across the towpath towards the car park.
00:24:29Whilst it is dark,
00:24:30you do start to see some features on the clothing.
00:24:38And it was from here that we were able to look at local ANPR cameras
00:24:42to see if we can identify what that second vehicle was.
00:24:48That's a big break,
00:24:49because we've obviously got a vehicle,
00:24:51a vehicle that didn't want to go into Weaver's Rise,
00:24:53and therefore a vehicle that somebody wants us not to see.
00:24:57So identifying that vehicle
00:24:58is potentially going to give us something
00:25:00which comes back to a suspect.
00:25:05Right, good morning, everyone.
00:25:07Welcome to the status briefing for Operation Ice Fox.
00:25:10Pre-offense now.
00:25:12So our Audi basically goes from the theft
00:25:14down to Weaver's Rise,
00:25:16which is where it gets dumped after the theft, right here.
00:25:19We're on shooting day.
00:25:21Audi emerges from here at 2339.
00:25:24At 2329,
00:25:26a dark vehicle comes down
00:25:28the crazy road from here,
00:25:29stays there for a couple of minutes here,
00:25:32and then it looks like
00:25:34three people emerge from the vehicle.
00:25:36The passenger walks around
00:25:38and swaps with the driver.
00:25:39The driver and another passenger
00:25:41walk out of the vehicle.
00:25:42One of them puts it up,
00:25:43and they walk onto the canal side of the path
00:25:4510 minutes before our car comes out.
00:25:48So what is it?
00:25:48It's a BMW 3,
00:25:49303 diesel,
00:25:50M Sport Auto in black,
00:25:52insured to Kyle Straker.
00:25:54He's the policyholder of the insurance
00:25:56and the only known driver
00:25:57on that vehicle since
00:25:58June 2025.
00:26:01The owner of the BMW,
00:26:03Kyle Straker,
00:26:04is no stranger to police.
00:26:05A career criminal
00:26:07with a string of convictions
00:26:08and deep-rooted links
00:26:10to organised crime.
00:26:11Now we can look at
00:26:12Kyle Straker,
00:26:14his background,
00:26:15the intelligence around him,
00:26:16his previous convictions,
00:26:18his telecoms work,
00:26:19his financials,
00:26:21and we can start to do
00:26:22an investigation into
00:26:22Kyle Straker
00:26:23at the same time
00:26:24as we do an investigation
00:26:25into the shooting
00:26:26in the hope that those two will meet.
00:26:29As the prime suspect,
00:26:31Straker needs to be brought in
00:26:32for questioning.
00:26:34But first,
00:26:35the team must find him.
00:26:42They trace his movements
00:26:43through financial records
00:26:45and telecoms data.
00:26:47Hiya,
00:26:47it's DC Smith calling
00:26:49from West Midlands Police.
00:26:50Financial intelligence
00:26:51can really assist us
00:26:52in an investigation,
00:26:53but just like CCTV,
00:26:55sometimes when you think
00:26:56you're going to get a lot,
00:26:57you might get
00:26:58absolutely nothing at all.
00:26:59So we've got
00:27:00an attempt murder investigation
00:27:02that we're running
00:27:03at the moment.
00:27:04One of our suspects
00:27:05has used the M6 toll.
00:27:07I'm just wondering
00:27:08if we've got the time,
00:27:09the exact time
00:27:10of the transaction
00:27:10and how much,
00:27:11what information
00:27:12would we be able to get
00:27:13if we sent a diet
00:27:14protection form for us?
00:27:16When you're looking
00:27:16into people's financials,
00:27:18it can massively help
00:27:19you house somebody,
00:27:20especially if you've got
00:27:21a number of locations
00:27:22where you think
00:27:23they could be.
00:27:24It can be little things
00:27:25such as earlier in the day,
00:27:27they might have been
00:27:27to a shop.
00:27:28You go to the shop,
00:27:29you get the footage
00:27:30and you see what
00:27:31they were wearing,
00:27:32what kind of haircut
00:27:33they had on that day,
00:27:34things like that.
00:27:37We have come up
00:27:38with a couple of addresses
00:27:40of interest.
00:27:41It just needs a bit more
00:27:42digging as to
00:27:43where those places are
00:27:45in relation to all the APRs
00:27:46and who lives there
00:27:48and what we can link
00:27:49to him, really.
00:27:51The issue we've got
00:27:52with him is he's got
00:27:53a registered address
00:27:54in Wolverhampton,
00:27:55looking at the APR
00:27:56hits of his vehicle
00:27:57and looking at the
00:27:57transactions that he makes,
00:27:58it doesn't look like
00:27:59he lives in Wolverhampton,
00:28:00he looks like he lives
00:28:01more over the Tamworth area.
00:28:03I am a genius.
00:28:07A series of cash transactions
00:28:09link Straker to a woman.
00:28:12Who's that?
00:28:13I'm just...
00:28:14I'm saying that.
00:28:15I'm saying that.
00:28:16Where does she live then?
00:28:20It's a good enough shot.
00:28:22As the net tightens
00:28:24around Straker,
00:28:25there's a breakthrough
00:28:26in the search
00:28:27for the missing Audi.
00:28:29Change the planes.
00:28:31The car,
00:28:32running on dead plates,
00:28:33is flagged on ANPR.
00:28:35We'll get the light out.
00:28:37And we go to...
00:28:38Yes, Lynn!
00:28:40Yes!
00:28:44Yes, it's definitely
00:28:45a clone flight.
00:28:46We've got it.
00:28:48We tend to find
00:28:49that where people
00:28:49are changing plates
00:28:50that they've thought
00:28:51through what they're
00:28:53going to be doing
00:28:53and how they're going
00:28:54to try and get away
00:28:55with it afterwards.
00:28:56Ultimately,
00:28:56it's a way to try
00:28:57and throw us off
00:28:58the scent.
00:28:59Now it's been identified,
00:29:01the Audi starts
00:29:02lighting up cameras
00:29:0320 miles from the crime scene
00:29:04on the opposite side
00:29:06of Birmingham.
00:29:08Tamworth!
00:29:19CCTV shows both
00:29:21the Audi
00:29:21and Kyle Straker's
00:29:22BMW
00:29:23making the same
00:29:24journey
00:29:24after the shooting.
00:29:32ANNPR camera.
00:29:34The girls
00:29:35have tracked it
00:29:36to the
00:29:37ANNPR camera.
00:29:38So they
00:29:39travel up in
00:29:40convoy
00:29:41up to
00:29:42Tamworth areas.
00:29:46That has
00:29:47the front headlight
00:29:48out.
00:29:51As the team
00:29:52closes in
00:29:52on Kyle Straker,
00:29:54new footage
00:29:55emerges,
00:29:55placing the Audi
00:29:57with its dead
00:29:57plates in a
00:29:58car park
00:29:59less than
00:29:59two hours
00:30:00after the
00:30:00shooting.
00:30:35The driver
00:30:36bears a striking
00:30:37resemblance.
00:30:38evidence to
00:30:38Kieran Atkins,
00:30:39a man already
00:30:40known to the
00:30:41police.
00:30:42His number
00:30:43is on Kyle Straker's
00:30:44phone records
00:30:44on the night
00:30:45of the shooting.
00:30:47He's the bloke
00:30:47that he's on the
00:30:48phone to constantly
00:30:49before 10 to 11.
00:30:50We already know
00:30:52that Kyle Straker
00:30:53is involved in
00:30:54this incident.
00:30:55We're looking at
00:30:56his phone
00:30:57contacts
00:30:57throughout the
00:30:58time period
00:30:59and we can see
00:31:00Kieran Atkins'
00:31:01features.
00:31:02Now,
00:31:03we don't know
00:31:03on reading that
00:31:04information alone
00:31:05what exactly
00:31:06Kieran Atkins'
00:31:07involvement in
00:31:07this offence
00:31:08is,
00:31:08if any.
00:31:09All of a sudden
00:31:09we've got Kieran
00:31:10Atkins in our Audi,
00:31:12which is another
00:31:13great break
00:31:13in the investigation.
00:31:15Right,
00:31:16Liz,
00:31:16we need to do some
00:31:16work around here.
00:31:18Excellente.
00:31:19Anticipate
00:31:20we'll be raised
00:31:20again as a suspect
00:31:21in the next,
00:31:22hopefully in the next
00:31:23five or six hours.
00:31:34Linking suspects
00:31:35Kieran Atkins
00:31:36and Kyle Straker
00:31:37is a breakthrough
00:31:38for Major Crime
00:31:39Team 1.
00:31:40And now,
00:31:41new evidence
00:31:42has emerged
00:31:43that may explain
00:31:44the motive
00:31:44behind the shooting.
00:31:45The case theory
00:31:47is that
00:31:48this is the debt
00:31:49to the responsible
00:31:51OCG
00:31:51manager called
00:31:52Kyle Straker.
00:31:54This is likely
00:31:55to be a
00:31:57kind of
00:31:58you better pay up
00:31:59to like the
00:31:59Vengals.
00:32:00Whether they intended
00:32:02to hit the female target
00:32:03or whether they didn't
00:32:04want to miss the fact.
00:32:06But the team
00:32:07discover no one
00:32:08in the house
00:32:08is responsible
00:32:09for that debt.
00:32:13Conflicts can start
00:32:14with something small,
00:32:15a petty argument,
00:32:17a falling out,
00:32:18or an unpaid drug debt.
00:32:23Retaliation
00:32:24is often swift.
00:32:25But the information
00:32:26they act on
00:32:27isn't always reliable.
00:32:29Targets
00:32:30are misidentified.
00:32:32Addresses are wrong,
00:32:34the consequences
00:32:35of which
00:32:36can be devastating
00:32:37because violence
00:32:38tied to drugs
00:32:39doesn't stay contained.
00:32:43Across the region,
00:32:44drug supply
00:32:45drives organized
00:32:46gang activity,
00:32:48often bringing violence,
00:32:49kidnappings,
00:32:50firearms,
00:32:51and ruthless
00:32:52debt enforcement
00:32:53in its wake.
00:32:57And when the violence
00:32:58spills onto residential streets
00:33:00in the West Midlands,
00:33:01it's ordinary families
00:33:03who can end up
00:33:03paying the price.
00:33:10As the investigation
00:33:12gathers pace,
00:33:13Rosie uncovers
00:33:14a crucial piece
00:33:15of CCTV
00:33:16from the night
00:33:17of the shooting,
00:33:17traced back
00:33:18through Straker's
00:33:19financial records.
00:33:22So we had details
00:33:24of a withdrawal
00:33:25of cash
00:33:25in the kind of
00:33:26Coesley,
00:33:27Sedgley area,
00:33:28caught to 11
00:33:29on the evening
00:33:30on the 2nd of July
00:33:32from Carl Straker.
00:33:33So CCTV
00:33:35was recovered
00:33:36from this location
00:33:37and lo and behold,
00:33:40what we see
00:33:41is the BMW
00:33:43pulling up
00:33:45outside of
00:33:45the post office.
00:33:49The use of Straker's
00:33:50bank card
00:33:51a short time
00:33:52prior to when we see
00:33:53our BMW on CCTV
00:33:55is really useful
00:33:56for a number of reasons.
00:33:57First of all,
00:33:57it gives us a location
00:33:58for the BMW
00:34:00because the CCTV
00:34:01around the cash point
00:34:02which shows
00:34:03the BMW arrive.
00:34:04secondly,
00:34:05it gives us
00:34:05a pinpoint
00:34:06and an identification
00:34:07for Straker himself
00:34:08because we see
00:34:09a person on CCTV
00:34:10get out of that vehicle
00:34:11and use his bank card
00:34:13to commit a transaction.
00:34:15So there is a high probability
00:34:16that that is him.
00:34:18The really important thing
00:34:19about this CCTV
00:34:20for us
00:34:21was when he gets out
00:34:22of the car
00:34:22to make the cash withdrawal,
00:34:24he locks the car,
00:34:25suggesting he was
00:34:26the only occupant
00:34:27of the car
00:34:27at that time.
00:34:30Shortly after
00:34:31withdrawing the cash,
00:34:33detectives believe
00:34:34Straker collects
00:34:35his two co-offenders,
00:34:36drives to the canal
00:34:37where two of the men
00:34:38switch from the BMW
00:34:39into the Audi.
00:34:47It's a hot task.
00:34:48We're going to be
00:34:48jacking up as quick
00:34:49as we possibly can.
00:34:51Thanks, Barry.
00:34:51Cheers.
00:34:53D.I. Francis Nock
00:34:55has been given
00:34:55the green light
00:34:56to arrest Kyle Straker.
00:34:58BMW 3,
00:34:59303 Diesel,
00:35:00M Sport Auto in black,
00:35:02insured to Kyle Straker.
00:35:03He's the policyholder
00:35:05of the insurance
00:35:05and the only named driver.
00:35:07A marker
00:35:07is placed on Straker's BMW.
00:35:10We've got to do that
00:35:10as quickly as possible
00:35:11because the people
00:35:12we've identified
00:35:12are a risk to the victims
00:35:15and they're a risk
00:35:15to the community.
00:35:16The moment his car
00:35:17is picked up by ANPR,
00:35:20armed officers
00:35:21will move in.
00:35:22I'll confirm that now.
00:35:25Once somebody's
00:35:26been identified
00:35:27in an investigation
00:35:28as a suspect,
00:35:29especially in a firearm job,
00:35:31if you don't get them
00:35:32quick enough,
00:35:33they might dispose
00:35:34of evidence.
00:35:35They might hurt
00:35:36somebody else.
00:35:37The priority right now
00:35:39is Kyle Straker.
00:35:42Armed response officers
00:35:43kit up and prepare
00:35:44to intercept
00:35:45Kyle Straker's vehicle.
00:35:48Equipped with carbines,
00:35:50tasers,
00:35:51and purpose-built
00:35:52armed response vehicles
00:35:53called ARVs,
00:35:55these specially trained
00:35:56officers operate
00:35:57with precision.
00:35:58We're going to meet you.
00:36:04Shortly before 10pm,
00:36:06Straker's BMW
00:36:07triggers an ANPR camera
00:36:09on the outskirts
00:36:10of Birmingham.
00:36:11Put the blues on, please.
00:36:12Blues on.
00:36:14OK, ARVs,
00:36:15get in a line then.
00:36:15In a tightly coordinated
00:36:17manoeuvre,
00:36:18four ARVs,
00:36:19supported by a dog unit
00:36:21and aerial surveillance,
00:36:23prepare to strike.
00:36:25Come on.
00:36:31Show me your hands now!
00:36:33Show me your hands!
00:36:58A mother of three
00:36:59has been shot in her home
00:37:01in a brutal attack
00:37:02and is in hospital
00:37:04with life-changing injuries.
00:37:07Now,
00:37:08Major Crime Team 1
00:37:09has finally tracked down
00:37:11the suspected gunman.
00:37:12We always look for
00:37:14the easiest and most
00:37:15effective way
00:37:15to bring people
00:37:16into custody safely
00:37:17and for Kyle Straker,
00:37:19that is a strike
00:37:21on his vehicle.
00:37:27armed response officers
00:37:29are moving in
00:37:29to stop suspect
00:37:31Kyle Straker.
00:37:34OK, ARVs,
00:37:35get in a line then.
00:37:35Come on.
00:37:38ARVs,
00:37:39show me your hands now!
00:37:40Show me your hands!
00:37:41Put your hands,
00:37:42hands, hands, hands.
00:37:44Get your hands up now.
00:37:46Out of vehicle,
00:37:46out of vehicle.
00:37:47I'm not the door!
00:37:49I'm not the door!
00:37:57OK,
00:37:57drop your phone,
00:37:58drop your phone.
00:38:02Anyone in the back, Amy?
00:38:03I said there's no
00:38:04what it was.
00:38:05Go on your back now.
00:38:09Driver secure.
00:38:10Cross this on well.
00:38:11Right,
00:38:12come up,
00:38:12slowly.
00:38:14Just keep your turn,
00:38:16lady.
00:38:24The strategy around the vehicle because of the offence and the involvement of the vehicle was to arrest all occupants
00:38:30on suspicion of the attempted murder.
00:38:32There was a passenger in the vehicle when it was stopped, a chap by the name of Ethan Colborne.
00:38:37At this point in time, we don't know whether Ethan Colborne is something to do with the investigation or not.
00:38:43Thruns and Rayclay, Thruns and Rayclay.
00:38:46Stay there.
00:38:48We'll talk about it in a minute, all right?
00:38:50Looks like I'll ease it down and expect everything to eat you, OK?
00:38:54What's your name, mate?
00:38:55I'm Kyle.
00:38:56Kyle.
00:38:56It's Greg, mate.
00:38:57We've had information linking that vehicle to it somewhere far along the road.
00:39:02Definitely now.
00:39:03Someone said I've got a firearm in my car.
00:39:05We've received information.
00:39:07That is genuinely before I know you're here, mate.
00:39:10If I knew more, I wouldn't be able to tell you.
00:39:12Got it genuinely done.
00:39:13No problem.
00:39:14That was.
00:39:14All right.
00:39:15So that's why we're here.
00:39:16That's why you've got to arm the spot.
00:39:17Anything on you want to tell me that?
00:39:18No.
00:39:19I'll start searching now.
00:39:20All right.
00:39:20No problem.
00:39:21During the stop, the team recover three phones.
00:39:24I put that in airplane mode.
00:39:26I've done that one I can't swipe up and down on.
00:39:28They could contain evidence to help secure a conviction against Straker.
00:39:34I'll eat a bag.
00:39:35Three bags.
00:39:36Change them.
00:39:37Yeah, yeah.
00:39:38The amount of data that is now stored on somebody's mobile phone is more than most computers.
00:39:45Depending on your privacy settings and how you set your phone up, it can store, you know, all your messages,
00:39:51all your pictures, videos, your locations, and if we can access those phones, download that information and review it, it
00:39:59can open up investigations in a whole new way.
00:40:04Even if there's nothing on you guys, we'll just have you get held here for a little bit.
00:40:07Yeah, of course.
00:40:07You do what you need to do.
00:40:09No problem.
00:40:09You do what you need to do.
00:40:11Just bear with us.
00:40:13Is there anything in the car that we need to know about?
00:40:15No.
00:40:15There's nothing at all.
00:40:17This is not Carl Straker's first interaction with police.
00:40:20He knows right from the moment the blue lights go on behind him how he's got to play it, and
00:40:24he's got to play it as an innocent man, because he knows this body-worn camera might be shown to
00:40:29a jury in due course.
00:40:31He's an organised criminal.
00:40:32He's immediately thinking about how he's best to present himself.
00:40:35Listen to me.
00:40:36You both are under arrest for a 10-murder.
00:40:38Anything you do is say you've never given evidence.
00:40:40Murder?
00:40:40For what?
00:40:41That'll be explained to you at the custody block, all right?
00:40:50Two weeks on from the shooting, Kyle Straker, the group's key suspect, is finally in custody.
00:40:58The offence, please.
00:40:59The offence attempted earlier.
00:41:04I was supposed to have done that in that car.
00:41:07So there's a link somewhere along the lines.
00:41:10Now, they know more than me about it.
00:41:11But then...
00:41:12You hear on suspicion, mate.
00:41:13It doesn't mean he treated the offence.
00:41:15Yeah.
00:41:16So, through the investigation, they said you're linked to the defense or suspicion.
00:41:20It's a vehicle.
00:41:22It's a vehicle.
00:41:22That's what they said to me when they stopped me before.
00:41:24It's a vehicle, not me personally.
00:41:25It's a vehicle.
00:41:25Ethan Colburn, the passenger in Straker's car, is unknown to Major Crime Team 1.
00:41:31But he's detained while detectives determine what role, if any, he played.
00:41:39Major Crime linked the vehicle to a firearms discharge.
00:41:45When you've got people in custody, you've got 24 hours in the first instance.
00:41:48You've got 36 hours if you can convince a superintendent to extend it that far.
00:41:53If you want them any longer than that, you need to go to a court and obtain a warrant
00:41:56of further detention.
00:41:57That means, in custody, everything has to move quickly and there's lots to do.
00:42:02We've got a circumstantial case at the moment.
00:42:04We need to make sure we've overturned every stone and left nothing to chance when we approach
00:42:10CPS for charging advice.
00:42:16In terms of Straker, we put a marker on his BMW last night.
00:42:20It got on the move at about, what, half nine, something like that.
00:42:25Coming from Tandworth back over to Dudley after nearly two days of activity.
00:42:28The army's got behind it, he was arrested from the vehicle.
00:42:33Also in the vehicle was an Ethan Colborne.
00:42:36He lives in Tipton, kind of in a very similar area to where Kieran Atkins lives.
00:42:42So we don't know the relevance of Ethan Colborne at the moment.
00:42:45What we've got in the immediacy is three phones, two iPhones and a Nokia Burnout.
00:42:50Straker's iPhone is switched on and being accepted by the iPhone and urgent.
00:42:54So fingers crossed that's got some stuff in it.
00:42:56We have got quite a nice custody time in terms of kind of 11 o'clock.
00:43:00That takes us through to 11 o'clock tonight.
00:43:0211 o'clock tomorrow morning with the Section 42 extension.
00:43:05But currently, essentially, we're not there. We need more.
00:43:09The team now have just 24 hours to produce further evidence to keep Karl Straker in custody.
00:43:16Well, I'm going to be here until a ridiculous time because obviously this operation is going on in the background.
00:43:22Detectives fast track phone analysis and intensify the search for more CCTV.
00:43:29What we've got is a team tracking this car forward.
00:43:33The next positive sighting of it is the ANPL camera that you're going to be tracking back from at zero.
00:43:39They're at 56. Between here and here, it's a ten-minute journey.
00:43:44It's taken them 25 minutes. So we need to understand where they've gone.
00:43:49We have somebody get side and free photographs of Karl Ford and close up photographs of his tattoo on the
00:43:56back of his left arm.
00:43:59Following his arrest, Straker's BMW was impounded and sent straight to forensics for analysis.
00:44:06The team work in full protective suits, masks and double gloves.
00:44:10One stray hair or one skin cell could contaminate a sample and destroy its value in court.
00:44:18We're looking at getting gunshot residue, but of course, gunshot residue has a finite window where it's useful.
00:44:25I'm swabbing the steering wheel, the gear lever and the iDrive controller.
00:44:32Gunshot residue is microscopic, invisible to the naked eye.
00:44:35Particles of lead, barium and antimony expel when a firearm is discharged, settling on everything nearby.
00:44:44On a person, it could be gone within hours.
00:44:46On a hard surface, left undisturbed, it can last indefinitely.
00:44:51The clock started the moment that trigger was pulled.
00:44:55Bank card. It's wrapped in a sock, which is unusual.
00:45:01Wrapped in a sock, hidden in the door. Okay.
00:45:04Is that a USB stick?
00:45:05It's a USB, yeah. That's in the car. It was in the blood box.
00:45:1083, 24, 20, 60, 84.
00:45:15Roughly 425.
00:45:17As the entire team works flat out to find the evidence needed to charge Straker and Colburn,
00:45:22a warrant is issued for the arrest of Kieran Atkins.
00:45:27But his phone has gone dead, and detectives are struggling to track him down.
00:45:32When you've got suspects still outstanding, like in this case, Kieran Atkins,
00:45:38it's reasonable to believe that when we arrested Straker and Colburn,
00:45:42their families might have passed that information on.
00:45:45Outstanding suspects then try and do as much as they can to try and stop themselves being caught,
00:45:51such as dropping their phone, moving address, maybe trying to leave the country.
00:45:57And it makes it a lot harder for us to try and find them then.
00:46:04There's three responses we could see on CCTV.
00:46:07So we believe we've got two of them.
00:46:09Kieran Atkins is the outstanding.
00:46:11That's the home address of his top contact, and appears to be his top cell.
00:46:16The theory would be he's laying low with her at the moment.
00:46:20Analysis of Atkins' old handset shows repeated calls to a number registered in West Bromwich.
00:46:27We know from intelligence that he's got a girlfriend who lives in a block of flats in that area.
00:46:34So what we've then done is deployed into the area to see whether we can pick him up on any
00:46:38CCTV.
00:46:41Before an arrest can be made, DI Francis Nock needs proof that Kieran Atkins is living at the flat.
00:46:48A surveillance team is deployed to the area.
00:46:54We're coming into the traffic now, so put the blues on please, blues on.
00:46:58The team confirm it's Kieran Atkins.
00:47:06So there's a lot of risk in relation to an armed arrest.
00:47:10Because even though they're trained officers, you're putting firearms in that area.
00:47:14Potentially with somebody who also has guns.
00:47:18Armed officers move in.
00:47:21State red, strike, strike, strike.
00:47:25Police!
00:47:27Police!
00:47:27Police!
00:47:28Police!
00:47:28Get around now!
00:47:29Get around now!
00:47:30Get around now!
00:47:31Get around now!
00:47:31Get around now!
00:47:34All right, come on.
00:47:35Got it?
00:47:36Yeah.
00:47:36Hands behind your back.
00:47:40One secure.
00:47:42You got anything on you?
00:47:44Just weave.
00:47:46Just weave?
00:47:46Yeah.
00:47:51We haven't found the firearm yet.
00:47:53So he could have access to that, he could dispose of it.
00:47:58Having them in custody isn't the end.
00:48:00We want to get them charged for this offence.
00:48:02Between the three of them, everybody who's involved in this offence is extremely dangerous.
00:48:07But we need more to charge these three suspects.
00:48:09Hello mate, you're okay?
00:48:12What?
00:48:13Is it Kieran Atkins?
00:48:14Yeah?
00:48:16I've got a phone call tonight.
00:48:19I've yet to talk to the officers about anything at the moment, but we'll go through all that.
00:48:23What has he been arrested for?
00:48:25Attempted murder.
00:48:26Yeah.
00:48:26At approximately 0020 hours.
00:48:29Yeah.
00:48:29The offender discharged a firearm from a silver Audi S3.
00:48:35You're going to be staying here for the purpose of securing and preserving evidence.
00:48:39That is basically a way of saying we need to interview you.
00:48:41We've obviously got a lot of other stuff that we need to do as part of this investigation.
00:48:45All right.
00:48:45Take or use any drugs, heroin, cocaine, cannabis?
00:48:48Cannabis.
00:48:49Cannabis.
00:48:49When did you last have any?
00:48:51Earlier on.
00:48:52How much drug?
00:48:54Cannabis.
00:48:55Cannabis.
00:48:55How much drug you had today?
00:48:57Probably three spits.
00:48:58Three spits today.
00:49:00All right.
00:49:01Anything else you want to tell me?
00:49:02I'll get a phone call tonight or no?
00:49:05I'm going to be up front.
00:49:07I'm doubtful.
00:49:07As soon as it is able that you are allowed to have a phone call, we will tell you and
00:49:11you can make a phone call all right.
00:49:12Is it your girlfriend you want to talk to?
00:49:13Yeah.
00:49:14Yeah.
00:49:14Is your girlfriend's number on this, just so I can take it?
00:49:17Can I keep that bike?
00:49:18Yeah, yeah, you can keep it, but I'll write it down.
00:49:20With three suspects now, the police are going to be able to take it.
00:49:22The police are now in custody, Straker, Atkins and Colburn.
00:49:25Police have 24 hours to convince the CPS to press charges or they walk.
00:49:41A horrendous late night shooting has left a mother of three in hospital with life-changing injuries.
00:49:48Armed police have arrested suspects Kyle Straker and Ethan Colburn.
00:49:52Armed police, show me your hands now!
00:49:54Show me your hands!
00:49:55What are you doing?
00:49:56Armed police!
00:49:57Armed police!
00:49:58Get your hands in!
00:50:00And now Kieran Atkins is in custody after being arrested near his girlfriend's home.
00:50:14At Perry Bar, DS Lucy Mooney has made a breakthrough in the hunt for the stolen Audi, which hasn't been
00:50:20seen on camera for two days.
00:50:24The Audi moves on the 12th to the 13th overnight.
00:50:28And when it's deposited on the 13th, the people have jumped over the wall there effectively.
00:50:35This is our stolen Audi that somebody's trying to put a cover over and then been in front of it
00:50:42to try and conceal it.
00:50:45There's three people that come out.
00:50:49Where the Audi's deposited, it's just in the corner here, you can see a couple of figures moving around and
00:50:54see.
00:50:56These are the taxis that they've called to come and collect them.
00:51:01The male on the left looks to go into the striker.
00:51:06The one next to him, Atkins, because of the size of him.
00:51:11And then there's another, it appears to be a white lads getting into the front of the taxi there.
00:51:21CCTV now links Straker, Atkins, and potentially Colburn to the stolen Audi.
00:51:27Yeah, the girls were spotted this morning and Bryn and I got that recovered.
00:51:32As the police seize the Audi and it heads to forensics, detectives focus on tying Colburn to the investigation.
00:51:40Ethan Colburn was arrested by accident out of Stryker's BMW.
00:51:45Looking into his phone work, yes, he's in contact with Stryker on the daily offence, but it doesn't prove anything
00:51:50on its own.
00:51:52It just shows that they're friends and they're talking.
00:51:55Without more evidence, Colburn's not going to be able to be charged for this offence.
00:52:00With stronger evidence needed to charge Ethan Colburn, detectives bring him in for questioning.
00:52:06Ethan, you were arrested yesterday, 23 to 48 hours, on suspicion of attempted murder.
00:52:16What can you tell me about this incident?
00:52:19No comment.
00:52:21Two vehicles were involved in this offence. The first vehicle I want to ask you about is a grey Audi
00:52:27A3 Quantro.
00:52:28What can you tell me about this vehicle?
00:52:30No comment.
00:52:31Do you know who owns it?
00:52:33No comment.
00:52:34No comment.
00:52:35I want to talk as well now about a second vehicle that is involved in this. This is the Black
00:52:41BMW. This is the vehicle that you were arrested from yesterday. What can you tell me about this vehicle?
00:52:46No comment.
00:52:48Who owns that vehicle?
00:52:49No comment.
00:52:50Kyle Stryker. How do you know him?
00:52:53No comment.
00:52:54Talk to me about your knowledge of firearms. Have you used firearms before?
00:52:58No comment.
00:52:59Do you have access to firearms?
00:53:02No comment.
00:53:03Is there anything that you want to clarify, explain at all?
00:53:07No comment.
00:53:08In that case, the time is 17.27 and I'll be having this interview here.
00:53:18Now it's Kyle Stryker's turn to be interviewed.
00:53:23You were arrested on suspicion of attempt murder. Do you understand what attempted murder is?
00:53:28Yeah.
00:53:29Can you describe it to me?
00:53:30I've attempted to murder somebody.
00:53:32Perfect.
00:53:33At approximately a quarter past midnight on the 3rd of July, five shots were fired. The victim had been walking
00:53:41down the stairs of a property.
00:53:42Can you tell me everything you know about this incident?
00:53:44No comment.
00:53:45Can you tell me about where you were around quarter past midnight on the 3rd of July?
00:53:50No comment.
00:53:50Were you at home?
00:53:52No comment.
00:53:53Was this all a mistake?
00:53:54No comment.
00:53:57Stryker isn't talking, but the forensic team have completed their analysis of his BMW, and now the Audi has arrived
00:54:05at the lab.
00:54:06Mr. Stryker, his driving licence.
00:54:10I've got several sets of car keys as well. Yeah, we've got an Audi key there.
00:54:22The car keys link Carl Stryker to the vehicle used in the shooting. It's a major breakthrough in the investigation.
00:54:33Right, good morning everyone.
00:54:36Detectives must now determine Ethan Colborne's role, if any, and build a robust case to present to the CPS.
00:54:43So briefly, you will be aware, of course, we've got Kieran Atkins, but we don't know the relevance of Ethan
00:54:50Colborne at the moment.
00:54:52Yeah, obviously we'll treat him with caution, not to, notwithstanding that Carl Stryker is our focus.
00:54:57Thank you very much, everybody.
00:55:01We've got lots and lots going on with the investigation with these people in custody, so our focus needs to
00:55:07be getting through these custody periods,
00:55:09making sure we secure and preserve all the possible evidence to make our case when we come to charging advice
00:55:15as good as it can possibly be.
00:55:19Tell me about the firearm in the vehicle. No comment.
00:55:22Did you know about the firearm? No comment.
00:55:26Who had the firearm? No comment.
00:55:29Whilst Carl Stryker continues to be interviewed, Charlotte is conducting a thorough analysis of his phones.
00:55:37This is a picture that we've recovered from Stryker's handset download.
00:55:41On the 11th of July, at 22.41, we looked at the device and looked at what that device was
00:55:47doing at that time,
00:55:48and it showed us that at the time the screenshot was taken, he was on a FaceTime with somebody.
00:55:53This is clearly a FaceTime, so you can see him, like, in the corner. That's Stryker.
00:55:59When we've got a download such as this, where you can see that there's communications from Mr Stryker to various
00:56:06other people about guns,
00:56:08and screenshots of guns, pictures of guns.
00:56:12Personally, I've been through the phone and there's text messages about guns.
00:56:16Not recovering the gun, whilst frustrating, doesn't prohibit us now from demonstrating that he has involvement in firearms,
00:56:25which will strengthen our case against him.
00:56:27Did someone from your vehicle get out of the vehicle and shoot out of the house? No comment.
00:56:33Or was the firearm discharged from inside the vehicle? No comment.
00:56:38The team have yet to recover the gun that was used in the shooting.
00:56:43But the image in the phone call gives them a huge clue.
00:56:48We don't know what our firearm in this incident is, but it might be that weapon.
00:56:53And to have him linked to a firearm, which corresponds with what might have been used in this offence, is
00:57:00obviously really powerful.
00:57:03Kieran Atkins is the final suspect to be questioned.
00:57:08Detectives have CCTV of him with the stolen Audi, but they still need more evidence before they can put the
00:57:14case to the CPS.
00:57:17My client wishes to put forward a statement.
00:57:19I deny attempting to murder anyone.
00:57:22We can now formally advise my client to exercise the right silence to answer all further questions while using two
00:57:26words.
00:57:27Those two words being no comments and no concern.
00:57:30CCTV tracking has identified the offending vehicle to be a stolen Audi SV Quattro in grey.
00:57:37But tell me where you were on the 1st of July. We'll start there. It was Tuesday night, two weeks
00:57:43ago.
00:57:43No comment.
00:57:44And how did you get home after the Audi had been driven away?
00:57:47No comment.
00:57:48Where was the Audi taken to?
00:57:50No comment.
00:57:53Is there anything else at all you can tell me in relation to the theft of that Audi?
00:57:56No comment.
00:58:00Deeper analysis of Straker's phones has uncovered a new lead in the investigation into the stolen car.
00:58:07In a case like this, when we have been able to get into the phone, it opens up a lot
00:58:11of opportunities for our investigation.
00:58:13So clearly, Straker previously had possession of the S3.
00:58:18He's got messages on his phone.
00:58:19Straker is in communication with someone called K25.
00:58:23So I found out where my S3 is, and I've still got a spare key.
00:58:25So I'm going to go take it back, but don't want to come over for nothing.
00:58:30Text messages confirm Karl Straker was the previous owner of the Audi,
00:58:34and that he kept a second key after selling it.
00:58:38On the day of the theft of the Audi, Straker sends him a message saying,
00:58:42Yeah, we need that car today, bro.
00:58:44Back and forth messages around the theft of the vehicle.
00:58:47For us, this is huge, because it shows that Straker has organised and had this car stolen for hire.
00:58:53Further WhatsApp calls.
00:58:55K25, because he can't help himself, then sends a message of himself driving an Audi.
00:58:59Drives the Audi down to the agreed drop-off point.
00:59:01Weaver's rise.
00:59:02Taxi back.
00:59:03Walsall Street.
00:59:05In comes the taxi.
00:59:07Out comes Profile 1.
00:59:09There you go.
00:59:11Readily identifiable as Kai Everett, who is arrested for attempted murder, threats to kill, going equipped.
00:59:16So a man of violence as well.
00:59:19Kai Everett is well known to police and has a number of serious offences on his record.
00:59:25Kai Everett is now a suspect in this investigation.
00:59:27We're satisfied at this time.
00:59:30He's a person who actually stole the car.
00:59:32And he needs to be arrested immediately.
00:59:35The team track Everett down to an address, and the Tactical Support Unit get a warrant for his arrest.
00:59:45Please!
00:59:46Please!
00:59:46Please!
00:59:47Please!
00:59:55Please!
00:59:57Please!
00:59:57Please!
00:59:57Please!
00:59:57Don't run!
00:59:58Get your hands out!
01:00:00Got him?
01:00:00Yeah.
01:00:00This morning, you're back.
01:00:01Do it now.
01:00:02Hands behind your back.
01:00:04Oh, please!
01:00:04Show me your hands now!
01:00:05Show me your hands!
01:00:06Show me your hands!
01:00:08Three men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a mother was shot in a drive-by attack
01:00:14at her home.
01:00:15She remains in hospital with life-changing injuries.
01:00:19Detectives believe they may have a crucial new lead in the theft of the vehicle used in the shooting.
01:00:26Great tracksuit.
01:00:27Mount bang over.
01:00:27You can see that it is the man who stole the Audi and the man who drops it at Weber's
01:00:31rights.
01:00:33Kai Everett has been identified as the suspect in the Audi theft.
01:00:37And officers are now moving in to arrest him.
01:00:59Please!
01:01:00Please!
01:01:01Please!
01:01:02Please!
01:01:07You all right?
01:01:08Is it Kai?
01:01:10Kai?
01:01:11Hands out, mate.
01:01:12So you're under arrest for theft of my vehicle on the grounds that a vehicle was stolen and used in
01:01:20further offences.
01:01:22With Everett detained, the focus shifts back to the prime suspects in custody.
01:01:27Time is running out, but the investigation is far from over.
01:01:32So just check the timing.
01:01:33So this one started at 00.
01:01:3600.15.
01:01:38So we identify the Audi as a stolen vehicle that was stolen at Wensbury the day before.
01:01:45And it comes down from Wensbury, stays at Dudley, and then goes and commits the offence.
01:01:50Through our CCTV we've seen that it interacts before and after the offence with a BMW 330.
01:01:57That is a vehicle insured to an OCG member called Kyle Straker.
01:02:03We've obviously got more for Straker than we've got for Atkins and Colborne at this point in time.
01:02:07It's his BMW that's linked.
01:02:09Atkins and Colborne, we are dependent on phone work and interactions with Straker himself.
01:02:15My assessment of it would be we could do with a bit more if we're going to be charging those
01:02:20two and we really need to try and find it.
01:02:25We had this six-minute gap just ever so slightly pre-offence between 23.56 and 00.06 that we've
01:02:37been trying to fill.
01:02:38And a consistent track for us there would be really, really helpful because it negates the ability for anybody to
01:02:43say, I've got out the car.
01:02:46As Kyle Straker, Kieran Atkins and Ethan Colborne enter their final hours of custody, new evidence emerges about the Audi's
01:02:55movements in the minutes before the shooting.
01:02:58What happens here is the Audi pulls into petrol station, registration plate clearly displayed, same characteristics as our authentic vehicle,
01:03:08the headlights being out.
01:03:10What we've then got is Ethan Colborne starts to fuel up the car with petrol and it's clear that we
01:03:18get that really good facial image that clearly identifies that person as Kieran Atkins.
01:03:25This petrol station confirms that there are at least three people in that vehicle.
01:03:29That therefore puts Kyle Straker as the driver of the offence.
01:03:33It puts Ethan Colborne and Kieran Atkins as the two passengers.
01:03:40For Major Crime Team 1, footage showing all three suspects in the Audi just 30 minutes before the shooting is
01:03:48a major turning point.
01:03:50We've got our offending vehicle on the forecourt of the garage showing the registration plates.
01:03:55For us this is absolutely huge because it puts them in that car very, very close to the offence.
01:04:01So there is no way now they can ever say wasn't me, wasn't there, wasn't in the car.
01:04:09So it massively gives us so much evidence against them for this offence that we just didn't have before.
01:04:19We combine that with the evidence we've already got and I think we're in position to charge these people.
01:04:24Alright.
01:04:25Yeah.
01:04:26Thank you, bye.
01:04:28I'd say 2 o'clock would be our target time for that.
01:04:36Karl, you've been charged with the following three offences.
01:04:38You don't have to say anything that may harm your defence.
01:04:40If you do not mention there is something which you'll later rely on in court.
01:04:43Anything you do say may be given in evidence.
01:04:45Thank you very much.
01:04:47Bye.
01:04:50Charged with attempt murder.
01:04:52We've had the call from CPS and they're willing to charge all three with attempt murder and possession of a
01:04:58firearm.
01:04:59It's an absolute massive relief for us.
01:05:01Right.
01:05:02If you put car back in C29, please.
01:05:05Oh, I'm so hurtful.
01:05:07Right.
01:05:08Ethan, on the 3rd of July this year at Dudley in the county of West Midlands, you attempted a murder.
01:05:13That's Contra Sections 1-1 of the Criminal Attempts Act of 1981.
01:05:16On the 3rd of July, you had in your possession a firearm with intent by means thereof to endanger life.
01:05:21And that's Contra Section 16 of and Schedule 6 to the Firearms Act of 1968.
01:05:26Doing what we do, whilst it's absolutely fantastic to bring justice, looking at the victim herself,
01:05:33she was in her own home where she should feel safe with her children and she was shut.
01:05:39And for the rest of her life, she's going to remember that.
01:05:43All right.
01:05:43All right.
01:05:45All right.
01:06:00All right.
