00:23Carly Minogue has been showing off the new man.
00:26In excess lead singer Michael Hutchence, the couple at last going public with their romance.
00:33There was concern from my team.
00:35They thought, uh-oh, uh-oh, she's too cute and good for him and he's too bad and hot for
00:45her.
00:48Yeah, well, I think people are going to be a bit shocked.
00:51Ha-ha!
00:54Carly Minogue has come out and said that she has never used hard drugs.
00:59Do you ever try and tempt her to do anything harder?
01:02Ha-ha!
01:04What were the nights out like?
01:06It was fun.
01:08What does I have to do to get the message through?
01:14No, she can do what she wants.
01:16I never tell anybody to do anything.
01:18She's on a real high herself.
01:19She doesn't need anything.
01:21How much fun?
01:23It's a lot of fun.
01:24Fun?
01:25Fun!
01:26Sun!ums.
01:29According to
01:29some newspapers, I read you discovered sex. Would you
01:33like me to comment further on that? Yes,
01:34I would. Yes,
01:35I would. Um,
01:36well, no, I can't, sorry. What are
01:39you trying to get to? How devilish
01:42was I?
01:44I was devilish enough.
01:53Let's get your sister out of the way very quickly.
01:55Is she in love?
01:56She was this sexy rock god that men and women just went, ugh.
02:04She just oozed confidence and confidence is sexy.
02:11In her world back then, confidence was just everything.
02:20But I remember it was just like she'd fallen head over heels.
02:25That's for sure.
02:43Okay, it's okay.
02:44We are now on the Orient Express on June 26th.
02:49This is an American couple filming this young Australian couple who are here to have a great time.
02:56You're on the air.
02:58Yes, he was this wild guy, but his intention was good, even if we weren't being so good.
03:07Everything was done with a lot of love.
03:12They've drunk all the champagne.
03:14Oh, my God.
03:15Cut, cut, cut.
03:18I had so many firsts with him.
03:21Hi.
03:23Hi.
03:24I never felt like I had blinkers on.
03:29But he took them off.
03:38I was at the perfect age.
03:40I was 21 years old.
03:47That's nice.
04:02He was hilarious.
04:07And cultured and tender.
04:14I love seeing the ones that are, that's not the shot.
04:19The moments around the shot.
04:26I just felt like I had my person there.
04:31I really did.
04:33Movie star.
04:35Movie star in Italy.
04:37In Italy.
04:38You can see it in any pictures from then as well.
04:46Maybe life wasn't going so fast for a second.
04:50Because I remember all of it.
04:53Like being on that boat in Hong Kong with that feeling of promise.
05:01I felt like a jewel.
05:03If you dropped it, it would smash.
05:05But if you protected it, it could shine.
05:15Are you going to marry him?
05:18It would be nice to be proposed to, but I don't know, we'll have to see.
05:33At the time, I got in to see NXS recording in the studio.
05:39And I loved it.
05:42I loved being in amongst that.
05:45I felt like I'd discovered a tribe.
05:49I thought it was amazing to see them write songs together.
05:52And have ownership over the end result.
05:56You know, we're pretty much equal.
05:58We tend to discuss things.
06:00I'll say, I think this.
06:01And if they all go, oh yeah, we agree with that, then we'll go into songs.
06:04It's pleasant.
06:06It must be that way.
06:08You have to be true with yourself.
06:11Then it was like a light bulb.
06:18I wanted to express myself more.
06:21And I just hadn't had that before.
06:31I knew this was the turning point.
06:36She had a rock star boyfriend.
06:39Michael gave her the confidence to be confident.
06:43Whatever I did, I knew she wasn't going to like.
06:46Remember the old days.
06:50Remember the old days.
06:51Snare drumming.
06:54Bit of guitar.
06:57Bit more guitar.
06:59Here's a hi-hat.
07:02I'd started making noise.
07:05I've got an idea.
07:07I mean, what about this and what about that?
07:09We haven't had time to discuss anything.
07:11Because we're, you know, we didn't have the time.
07:16I became really frustrated.
07:18It felt like fighting against the system.
07:22I know I've had 15 number ones.
07:25I know we've had 142 top 20s.
07:29I mean, I've lost count.
07:30I wanted to explore different ideas, be open to change.
07:36That's not what the public want.
07:37That's not what the public want.
07:38The public want I should be so lucky.
07:43Oh, well, um...
07:45I'm just tired of playing it so safe.
07:49And I should be allowed to speak.
07:51I should be allowed to have some input.
07:54Just to be able to have something to do with my work, you know.
07:58Not just be the face for it.
08:01Me.
08:02Me.
08:05Me.
08:06Me.
08:06Me.
08:07Me.
08:07Me.
08:07It's like someone was strangling any creativity that I had.
08:14And by being forced to be quiet, shut up and listen,
08:19I learnt a lot that way.
08:23And so, things don't change.
08:27I won't be here anymore.
08:33Unless I could have things my way.
08:37Listen.
08:38I have two daughters.
08:41And at some point, the old man don't know as much as they do.
08:48That's called growing up.
08:50I didn't used to be able to say no.
08:54You do now.
08:55I certainly do now.
08:57Yeah, I do.
09:05I was reclaiming my sense of self.
09:13And that's when I discovered that there were many more Kylies out there.
09:19It's upon the hour to come amongst you and amaze you with absolute, incredible,
09:24and as long-time sounds.
09:26Look out.
09:26Here we go.
09:30I think my manager had said,
09:35There's a Kylie Knight.
09:37And I'd never heard of a Kylie Knight.
09:40I'm like, what?
09:51There's drag performers dressed as you.
09:54Do you want to go?
09:55Yeah.
10:01It was like, wow.
10:09Like supersonic versions of me.
10:16And this was a time when it was in to really not like me.
10:26And I ended up on stage.
10:28At this drag bar.
10:30And I felt like the least Kylie there.
10:33Yeah.
10:34I thought I'd got to step it up.
10:35I got to get some lashes on and some eyeliner or something.
10:43Pete Waterman had been badgered sufficiently to go, alright kid, what do you want?
10:49What kind of music do you want to make?
10:51And I think that might be the first time he really asked me that.
10:54But I just had hardly enough.
10:58She was going to clubs.
11:01She's now part of that whole club scene.
11:06If you're in that, you're going to want your records to sound like that.
11:14Why do you think it suits people to portray you as some kind of bimbo?
11:18Because it's easy and then I'm not a threat to them.
11:21There's something pretty remarkable about young Kylie Minogue.
11:26Gossip columnists write her off as the singing budgie.
11:30Well, the budgie's feathers are ruffled.
11:33Monday 29 jam, 10.30 sharp.
11:36I remember that gig.
11:42We caught ourselves singing budgies.
11:46I remember what I was wearing.
11:48My amazing shiny tights.
11:50That I was obsessed with.
11:54I remember Michael being smacked bang in the middle of the crowd.
11:59Kylie's got this real sweet, innocent image.
12:03Kylie's really not the person that people think she is.
12:06And there's a lot of strength.
12:08Singing budgie, you know, it's a horrible title.
12:11Whoever wrote that is probably fat and bald and 50 years old,
12:15but they look 70 and they've got bad breath and can't control themselves.
12:20And they're probably jealous.
12:25We've gone from I Should Be So Lucky to Kylie the Diva in one foul swoop.
12:33She wanted to see the video makers.
12:36She wanted her own stylists.
12:37The guys that we've worked with here for years.
12:40She just went, I'm not working with those guys anymore.
12:43Whether it's stylists or photographers or whoever,
12:48I'm working with them rather than just being force fed their ideas.
12:56I was running from the 80s.
12:59The sheen of it, the era of it, the puppeteering or the having no substance.
13:06And as soon as I had my image in my little grasp,
13:13by God, I'll turn into a lunatic.
13:15I'm tired and falling free.
13:18I can't believe in you.
13:19I'm really fine because I'm shocked by the power.
13:24I'm shocked by the power.
13:26I'm shocked by the power.
13:26Those few bars that we heard there,
13:28the first time anybody's heard your new single in this country.
13:31And a videotape together with you.
13:32Well, yeah, that's being sent over tomorrow, actually,
13:35and it's quite different.
13:36Is it?
13:37Oh, my God.
13:38Oh, my God.
13:40This is it.
13:41This is the moment.
13:44Holy Mary, Mother of God.
13:48I guess I was taking the power back.
13:55Yeah, just saying,
13:59all right, let's go.
14:04Okay, report, please.
14:06Oh, my God.
14:07The press are gonna, like, ban it.
14:08I think it's gonna be bad.
14:09I know it's gonna...
14:10Terry?
14:11Mum?
14:13What's your dad gonna say?
14:17It's gonna be bad.
14:25Carly Minogue, the squeaky clean next-door neighbour,
14:28kicks off her tour tonight.
14:30She'll be putting her new look and new sound
14:32through their paces.
14:34There we go, there we go.
14:36Right, right, right.
14:40What can the fans expect?
14:42It's lots of fun.
14:43It's just an hour and a half of letting go
14:46and just enjoying themselves.
14:48The papers in England have been saying your show's raunchier this time.
14:51Is that right?
14:52Well, they've gone a little extreme.
14:55It's not an X-rated show or anything.
14:58Is that when I was wearing, like, really ra...
15:02raunchy outfits.
15:09She couldn't have picked a worse thing to do.
15:13Carly arrived by coach in Dublin
15:15after a four-hour journey from Belfast.
15:19It's great to finally be here.
15:21There's a lot of talk about the changing image for Carly Minogue.
15:24Yeah, I saw that in the paper today.
15:26Nice hair to Yvonne.
15:28Yeah.
15:35So what can people expect when they come to see you?
15:41Well...
15:44Lots of choreography.
15:46Fabulous costumes.
15:48My outfits have been designed by John Galliano.
15:51After checking her out, seeing how she danced, how she moved,
15:54getting to know her personality,
15:56I went away and did some drawings.
15:59So her first outfit was very inspired by Lolita.
16:06And it's worn over a frilly bra
16:08and a body slip with built-in knickers.
16:15Everybody's going,
16:16I'm going, no, no, no.
16:17Whoa, whoa, whoa.
16:20This is Carly's wish.
16:21Ready? Five, six, seven, eight.
16:25This is what she wants to do.
16:34She's going to find out for herself.
16:38I don't want people to know what to expect, actually.
16:40I want them to come with an open mind.
17:01Yeah, it was...
17:02We went a bit far.
17:03I'm not going to lie.
17:04We went a bit far.
17:12I mean, maybe it was good in real,
17:14but it didn't look good in a freeze frame.
17:21I'm going to defend it with that.
17:28Does that help?
17:30I think it does help.
17:36But I know what you're going to cut to.
17:41Now, our next guest shocked her young fans
17:43by strutting across the stage in some of this ghetto.
17:46I don't have to describe it too much.
17:48Kylie, good morning.
17:49Hi, how are you?
17:50I'm very well.
17:50How do you react?
17:52I mean, did you read all the criticism
17:54or did you throw most of it away?
17:55I saw some of it.
18:01They say that you look a bit like Madonna now
18:04or you're trying to model yourself on Madonna.
18:05Well, when we're saying they,
18:07we're talking about the tabloid place.
18:09That was tricky to defend those decisions.
18:20With your new tour on it,
18:21there is such controversy.
18:24Yeah, I'm a bit surprised.
18:29She kind of went too far
18:30prancing around the Dublin stage in lingerie.
18:33She went from the girl next door
18:36to the girl next door who's been around the flock.
18:39It's much raunchier than it was.
18:40Yes, I mean, I don't really like to call myself raunchy.
18:44We've just seen your raunchy new video.
18:47The new raunchy image.
18:48It's certainly fairly raw, isn't it?
18:51Raw?
18:51Raw.
18:52Well, raw as in raunchy, I mean.
18:56There was a time when you thought
18:57or you said you were raunchier than your sister.
19:00She's changed the image, hasn't she?
19:02Yeah, she has lately.
19:03I remember thinking, this is so boring, repetitive, stupid.
19:15To hear that Kylie Minogue is too sexy
19:17is a bit like hearing that Mary Poppins
19:20has turned into a hooker.
19:23I mean, imagine you just show up to work every day
19:26and you just...
19:30There's even been speculation in Australia
19:33that you've had a boob job.
19:35Oh, dear.
19:37One magazine even went as far as showing before and after shots.
19:44It's exhausting.
19:49And then as a female pop artist,
19:52if you say something,
19:54you're a bitch, you've got an ego,
19:56you're a diva.
19:58Any motive accompanying?
20:00No, well, you know,
20:02if you're going to interview me
20:03having researched tabloid newspapers,
20:06there's no point talking to me
20:08because I didn't see loads of mothers
20:10storming out with their children.
20:11And if you're a guy and you say,
20:13shut up, that's not true,
20:14people go, fair enough, he's right.
20:17One mother.
20:18So I get questioned.
20:20God, well, you know,
20:21parents were storming out with the kids.
20:22It's rubbish.
20:25I am disappointed at the moment
20:27because I'm not trying to...
20:29I'm trying to be myself.
20:34But whenever the going got tough,
20:37I had that love and support from Michael.
20:42In Excess is the first non-American group
20:45to land six consecutive top ten hits
20:48in the Hot 100 since Culture Club in 1983-84.
20:53Nice.
20:54Really?
20:57But Michael was touring all over the world.
21:01So it became really hard for us to see each other.
21:14So I would send video messages to him.
21:20Is it telling you it's low light?
21:23One, two, three.
21:25Hi, he sends a light to Michael!
21:30Hi!
21:32Hi!
21:33Hi!
21:36I think of another message to give you very shortly.
21:42But it just became more and more difficult.
21:45Are you still in love with Kylie?
21:49Geoff.
21:52Don't ask me a kiss.
21:53No, it's too private, you know.
21:56At the very least, we're very good friends,
21:57and I always will be.
22:00It's not, you know, kind of the very best.
22:03Who knows?
22:05Who knows?
22:11He was the first in so many ways.
22:21And one of those firsts was...
22:24a heartbreak.
22:31I was devastated.
22:34We could live!
22:38He was a rock star.
22:40Which doesn't just mean...
22:43that he needs to have many women in his life,
22:46but he needed to...
22:48go where he needed to go.
22:53But I know from people in his circle...
22:58that he...
22:58talked of me and thought of me.
23:06We were good together.
23:11Shoulda, woulda, coulda, whatever.
23:13Or, you know, you go on and live...
23:15your lives.
23:17But it was definitely an amazing...
23:21point in time.
23:22And I've probably been looking for something like that ever since.
23:25And I haven't got it.
23:30Really?
23:32Yeah.
23:34Can I ask?
23:34When you think of him today...
23:37how does it make you feel?
23:43Good.
23:44Even if I'm getting teary, because it's just...
23:45it's like...
23:46it was all good.
23:50Yeah.
23:51But to have...
23:54someone that you really felt like you were a good team.
23:57Yeah.
24:01Anyway, we've got to go past that.
24:09I didn't know where to go, what to do.
24:12And I didn't want to be in London.
24:13I didn't want to be in Australia.
24:16And so...
24:18I went to Paris.
24:21I remember having a tiny English to French dictionary.
24:27I didn't know anyone there.
24:29But I had two phone numbers...
24:31scratched on a bit of paper.
24:33And one of those numbers was...
24:35a friend of a friend...
24:38of a friend of a friend of mine.
24:45And...
24:47she lived with a girl called Kat.
24:50My best, oldest girlfriend...
24:53Katarina Jeb, whose apartment we're in.
24:57Kat doesn't like to be in front of a camera.
24:59I'm out of here.
25:00Tell me if you need anything.
25:02Okay.
25:04I'll wail.
25:06But she is an amazing photographer...
25:09with an incredible eye and heart.
25:11But...
25:12Corners.
25:13Corners and corners.
25:14More corners.
25:16And we say corners.
25:18Love from all corners.
25:23Katja, Prince, what do we have here?
25:25Paris.
25:30I moved myself into her apartment.
25:33I got a sleeping bag.
25:34I slept on the sofa.
25:38I was feeling heartbroken and was escaping my feelings.
25:44But we would do photo sessions.
25:51Just the two of us.
25:53Just the two of us.
25:53I didn't know who she was because my exposure to pop culture was not very voluminous.
26:01But it was an instantaneous understanding.
26:10Going for it?
26:11I don't know.
26:15I've been the subject pretty much my entire life.
26:19But this was different.
26:23We're not doing it because someone's asked for it.
26:28We're doing it because we want to do it.
26:31The public persona versus the private persona.
26:35How many people can unveil themselves completely unfiltered?
26:42I'd been doing very dark lashes and kind of bouffant.
26:46And it was Kat who said to me,
26:48What about you just let your hair...
26:50Just let the curls out or maybe less of the brows or...
26:55And then I went like to nothing.
26:58Even though a photograph can capture a moment, can capture a story,
27:02it's really hard to see yourself.
27:05There's this camera...
27:07There's a wall.
27:09You see through it.
27:10You can't see it.
27:11But there's a divide.
27:15And I felt with hers, the invisible wall was gone.
27:22And I was looking through Kat's photographs.
27:25And I thought, wow, I can see me.
27:29She was a real saviour to me.
27:32I started to feel good and confident as a woman on my own.
27:42She has called it the end of an era and they have refused to comment.
27:46But Kylie Minogue's relationship with Pete Waterman Limited,
27:48her record company of five years, has ended.
27:52Kylie told MTV News that PWL found it hard to accept the changes.
27:57To be honest, I wasn't sad.
28:00And I remember, honestly, I'm not telling this exaggeration,
28:02I had to sit with the staff here and explain that at some point
28:07you left home from your mum and dad.
28:09Well, this is Kylie leaving home from my mum and dad and making it on her own.
28:14That's all it is.
28:15And that's part of growing up.
28:18You know, so...
28:26We've come to an end.
28:28Things do come to an end, you know.
28:35I signed to Deconstruction Records.
28:40They had a very independent feel.
28:43Kylie, how do you do a nice to meet you?
28:48They were open to experimentation
28:51and wanted me to be much more involved.
28:57And we talked about a very different vocal delivery.
29:02We all get hurt by love
29:06And we all have a cross to bear
29:11I hadn't done those kind of notes before.
29:14But it was like, feel the fear and do it anyway.
29:17Problems should be shared
29:25I'd never done anything like that.
29:35Kylie Minogue returns to the pop scene this week.
29:39With a new record and a new sound.
29:47The new album Kylie Minogue has widely been greeted as your bid to become treated as a serious artist.
29:54Is that how you see it?
30:01I can use whatever language I like.
30:16If Kylie Minogue represents the Australian dream, then Nick Cave is surely the Australian nightmare.
30:27Attracting a cult following with his twisted lyrics and darkly wasted image.
30:32All right, go all the way down to the end.
30:38I think, I think those songs are written with a fair amount of disgust for things, yeah?
30:49Because I'm a pretty disgusted person, you know?
30:57Look, I was, um, an observer.
31:03And I just always liked her.
31:06Whenever I saw her on the TV, there was something about her that I liked.
31:11But, you know, I didn't sit around and listen to her records or anything.
31:15I wasn't like a fan fan.
31:19But there was something that I recognised in her that I responded to.
31:25But you just don't like to be a photograph?
31:27No, I don't really.
31:28So, let's move it along here.
31:33There was a strange thing with Kylie because even though she had mass appeal, you know, she had everything but
31:40credibility.
31:41And I looked at her because I had credibility but not much else.
31:57At that time, I was writing a bunch of murder songs.
32:01So, I had a kind of audacious idea for Kylie Minogue to do a murder ballad.
32:10Yeah, hello.
32:12But there was terrible opposition from management and so forth that this is just a fucked up idea.
32:19Which it was.
32:20This is cool.
32:23Storyboard for where the wild roses grow.
32:26This is so cool.
32:28Nick observes Kylie's face and body in water.
32:32I was a well-known sort of drug addict.
32:35Close-up angle static. Kylie lays in water. Tear on cheek. Flies possibly buzz around face.
32:40And the nature of the song was dubious.
32:44Close-up static. Nick reaches for rock. Again.
32:50Yeah, I mean, that's always been close to my heart.
32:53Nick reached out and I was like, who? Like, huh?
33:00I was not the demographic of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds fan club.
33:05But there is an Australian thing. They just do shit, right? They just do stuff. And they don't think about
33:13it too much. They just give stuff a shot, you know? And she's like, yeah, okay. And...
33:19I was...I was naive. I didn't know.
33:26We were waiting for her to come into the studio.
33:31I don't think anyone had met Kylie before.
33:37And the Bad Seeds, we were a dark force.
33:42This group of weird, fucked-up sort of broken men.
33:49And a lot of drugs.
33:51And a contemptuous, pessimistic view of the world.
33:57But when she came into the studio...
34:01She was like this sort of...beam of light.
34:09..with this incredible positivity.
34:16I don't think we'd ever met anyone in our lives, really, that liked life.
34:24Just this sort of bold...brightness.
34:29And we were really...we were terrified of it to some degree.
34:35On the first day I saw her, I knew she was...
34:39And when she went to record, she sang in a kind of Kylie-esque, trained...
34:46A lot of vocal tricks, I guess.
34:49And we were like, look, forget all that, just sing it straight.
34:53When he knocked on my door...
34:56And entered the room...
34:59Sing it less, like, almost make it a story.
35:04He would be my first band...
35:05And be a character.
35:07With a careful hand...
35:08He wiped out the tears...
35:10And she just did this version of it that so beautifully haunted the whole thing.
35:15They call me the wild road...
35:19We were just...staggered.
35:22But my name was Eliza Day.
35:27Why do you call me that I do not know?
35:33Good evening, and we have something very special for you tonight on Top of the Pops.
35:39I remember doing Top of the Pops.
35:42I think you can see by the performance, I don't know what's going on.
35:48I'm just sort of bumbling around.
35:51You know, the people that turned up to my concerts were psychos.
35:56We would be taking iron bars and scissors and knives off people in the front row.
36:01So I know about a dangerous audience.
36:06But I've never experienced anything like Kylie Minogue's audience.
36:13They were terrifying.
36:17Just these sort of monstrous, awful teenage girls.
36:24They did not like me.
36:26They did not like me to go near their princess.
36:29Well, Nick gets worried that my fans didn't like him or didn't like the project.
36:36I don't think that's so.
36:38And these little girls say, you fucking old bastard. What are you doing? You horrible old cunt.
36:44They were just evil.
36:47So I couldn't help but throw my arms around Kylie.
36:52And they're just running their fingers across their throats and saying, just don't.
36:58And then they'd turn the cameras towards them and they'd all be like, hey.
37:01Yay!
37:04Kylie with Nick Cave in the back seat.
37:06Right, well done.
37:08Evil. Evil people.
37:14I'm a hell of a lot better for seeing you.
37:17Did you read about us in the paper?
37:19No.
37:22Apparently we're snogging.
37:29More snogging than singing was the thing.
37:33Our worlds collided.
37:35But it was like another kind of love.
37:44I'm going to sound like I'm just falling in love all the time, but it was really
37:52some kind of union that wasn't romantic.
37:58I think we recognised a vulnerability in each other.
38:04That we were sort of, I think at that time, trying to escape.
38:12I was locked into a kind of lifestyle that was becoming increasingly problematic.
38:20But with Kylie, I could see the world in a positive way.
38:34I'd like to invite now Ms. Kylie Minogue to come up here.
38:41And I think she wanted to break free from the sort of constraints that she thought she was imprisoned by.
38:54A prisoner of an image.
38:58That she was a sort of brainless pop.
39:03Pablum, you know.
39:04Mush.
39:05But she had things to say.
39:09Particularly with the lyrics.
39:10It's like the most important thing you can do really.
39:14And if you're writing your own lyrics, you don't have other people's thoughts coming out of your mouth.
39:18It's sort of defining yourself in a way.
39:20Nick Cave says to me, where are your lyrics?
39:26I'm not really fully fleshed somewhere yet.
39:29If you feel things, then you're able to write them.
39:32So, I hope you do that, Kylie.
39:35You know what I did find?
39:37Lyrics.
39:40I remember trying to write something that would talk to me.
39:46I wanted to be your lonesome cowboy.
39:48I wanted to love you till it hurt.
39:50Oh, wow.
39:51That was a lyric.
39:52That's not my writing.
39:53Someone else has written in my book.
39:55She wanted to be stopped in time, suspended.
39:57It was the best ever night of it.
39:59And I said that obviously didn't make it.
40:01I mean, it's really terrible.
40:03This is going to sound really terrible when I say it out loud.
40:07You just can't wait, can you?
40:09Who would have thought that little girl would end up living out her wildest dreams?
40:15Sometimes it sounds really not so great saying it.
40:18There's a lot of absolute tosh in here.
40:21There's got to be something in here.
40:25I wanted to sometimes be irresponsible.
40:29I wanted to own the choice I made.
40:33Quite revealing.
40:34In what way?
40:37Well, it's not self-explanatory.
40:39It's not very revealing at all.
40:44But then I caught something from the creative ether.
40:48Got up in this house, strapped my very old self in the snare of mine.
40:51It felt like a fire was just like coming out of me.
40:57Oh, gosh.
41:00It was like contained rage.
41:07I wanted to find a way to put an end to all of my destruction.
41:11I wanted to know what I was worth.
41:14She really was she, I.
41:20I was just really in it.
41:22I wasn't separate to the song.
41:25Well, I would make it slower and shorter.
41:31I really wanted to be more than one facet.
41:35I have so many characters lurking in my body, it's frightening.
41:40I'm possessed.
41:45It was much more on the edge.
41:49I was very on the edge, clearly.
41:52I didn't want to say it.
41:55What do you mean?
41:59Her new album.
42:01Two years in the making.
42:04Let's get this lady out here.
42:05The impossible princess herself.
42:07Ladies and gentlemen, Carly Manon.
42:10Have you totally disown those really early songs now?
42:14I've actually not been able to say I should be so lucky in so many years.
42:18And in a way, it was a slight exorcism.
42:22There was an honesty and a purity and a, I'm just putting it all out there.
42:29Definitely the most personal work I've ever done.
42:33Is that more nerve-wracking when it goes out?
42:36Yeah, scary.
42:41And then I saw a billboard.
42:43You don't know about the billboard?
42:47There was a billboard that said,
42:50we've decided what to do with Kylie's music.
42:54Don't play it.
42:57Boom!
43:00A royal slap.
43:02Quick test for sound, you alright?
43:04Yeah, go on.
43:04One, two, three, four, five.
43:05Hello, here we are with Tower Records.
43:07We started?
43:08Yep, it's about to.
43:09Sorry.
43:12Okay.
43:13Kylie, if we could first start by asking you about the new album.
43:15I don't think I was on the radio at all.
43:18How did it all come about?
43:20Um, in fact, some stations were actively not playing me.
43:28In the house tonight, wielding the new Mojica, Jason Donovan.
43:31You have to talk about Kylie Minow. Do you follow her career?
43:33Have you turned her kind of venture with the latest album into doing some indie stuff?
43:36Mm-hmm.
43:36What do you think of that?
43:37It hasn't worked, I don't think.
43:42Kylie! Kylie!
43:45Kylie!
43:45Kylie!
43:46Kylie!
43:50Kylie!
43:50Kylie!
43:51Kylie!
43:51Kylie!
43:51Kylie!
43:51Some people just want to watch you crumble and they're on to the next person.
43:58Pop, disposable, pop, disposable.
44:00Other teen sensation seems to have come gone.
44:03What do you think your appeal is?
44:04I mean, you know.
44:06You'd be better off asking other people that than me.
44:09I can't be that self-analytical, I don't think.
44:14Many, many times I just thought, I just honestly don't know if this is worth it.
44:19Just tell me about the album though, it's got overly imaginative title.
44:24And the minute you start trying to defend yourself, they've won.
44:35Excuse me, where are you from?
44:37Is that a serious question?
44:39Yeah.
44:39Is there any truth that we're not talking?
44:41I find that so ridiculous.
44:46Do you think she's had it really in terms of the music industry?
44:50I never thought she had it in the first place really.
44:53I was making deconstruction, no money.
44:56Zippo, nada.
44:57Rien, nothing.
44:59So, she's off the books.
45:03I thought, I'm going to act again.
45:05Because there was enough people who were thinking, if not saying,
45:10that's it, it's done.
45:33I got a phone call, and yeah, I don't remember what words she said, but...
45:44It was like, he's gone.
45:52I got the flight back to Sydney for the funeral.
45:58And I just went, oh, that's another first.
46:02This is my first, um, service that I've been to.
46:06Like, okay, always with the firsts, you know?
46:14We gather to mourn the death of someone whom most of us barely knew.
46:26We listened to him sing, and felt that it was for us alone.
46:33We're here today to mourn the death of Michael Hutchence.
46:43It might seem disproportionate, the emotion and the memories I have with him and with that time.
46:52But I just felt protected and nurtured and valued and believed in.
47:02Someone you counted on is gone.
47:05I remember being at the church, and it was overwhelming, the outpouring of love for him.
47:12Someone who was your rock is no more.
47:15That's gonna sound totally crazy, but I felt him just saying, it's okay.
47:21It will be okay.
47:22It will be okay.
47:25I always feel he's with me.
47:30It's kind of crazy, but I do.
47:35Which is so, like, you can, you can have relationships with, as I have had, you know, relationships with different
47:43people, but someone that really just believed in, believes in you so much.
47:53Here's an important point.
47:56He really didn't want me to be someone else for him at all.
48:03He was encouraging me to discover me.
48:17Fuck.
48:18Fuck.
48:34I had a kind of harebrained idea.
48:37Now, without further ado, I'd like to introduce the first of the talented and totally diverse artists...
48:44I was asked to go and perform at this thing called the Poetry Olympics.
48:48Two days and nights of continuous poetry that was put on that at the Albert Hall.
48:57Here is a love that makes its bargain with bad habits.
49:02Tell me lies about Vietnam.
49:05You can have sex with anyone, but with whom can you sleep?
49:11This had some great poets in it, but mostly it was just this endless, worthy... art.
49:20When I take off my head, the head looks into my bleeding neck.
49:26A fucking baby's fucking crying, a fucking flower's fucking dying.
49:29I thought you were also king, they were nice.
49:32People have been sitting in their chairs, I think, for, you know, a day listening to this poetry.
49:41I was seeing Kylie quite a bit.
49:45And I'm like, why don't you come along and recite something?
49:50I was thinking, are you mad?
49:53The sword of Damocles is hanging over all of us.
49:57This is not my world. I'm not, I'm not from the literary world.
50:01In view of that, what subject can we sensibly discuss?
50:05So, I tried everything to get out of it.
50:09She said she tried to get out of it.
50:11Oh, really? We weren't having any of that.
50:15For what is liberty without the liberty to act?
50:19And I said to Nick, God's on stage, how do we follow that?
50:23He said, Jesus did okay. And then he went out.
50:33The way I remember it is that, which I'm surprised I can remember anything at all,
50:39because we were so out of it.
50:41Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho!
50:49You would like to bring on a flame-like Tony Manon, ladies and gentlemen.
50:56She walked on this pop princess up against the most elitist art form there is of poetry.
51:08Well, I thank you.
51:10Well, I didn't expect to be here, but I have come with words that I did not write,
51:15which I shall read to you.
51:28In my imagination, there is no hesitation.
51:33I dream about you all the time.
51:37And I could hear the recognition that the audience, they were with me and with us.
51:45In my imagination, there is no complication.
51:49We walk together hand in hand.
51:52She just broke the night open.
51:53And I'm dreaming that you're in love with me.
51:57It was poetry that we could understand.
52:03I should be so lucky.
52:07Lucky, lucky, lucky.
52:11I should be so lucky in love.
52:17It was like being face to face with my old self.
52:23The one that I was trying to turn my back on.
52:29I don't know if I said this out right, but I'm like, what the fuck are you doing?
52:33Like indie?
52:34I mean, no one willingly wants to be indie.
52:42They may say they do, but that's not what Kylie is.
52:54Kylie is this force that is there to affect thousands and thousands and thousands of people.
53:10It's all outward.
53:13It's all giving.
53:16You have an enormous positive influence.
53:19These people that go along to their first pop concert.
53:23It's a life changing moment where they feel something that they've never known before.
53:31The great beauty of pop music is that it is a joy machine.
53:40You've got the coolest guy on the planet saying, where's the pop tunes?
53:52Right, let's get the jetpacks on and let's get back to the dance floor.
53:58But if this doesn't work, I am finished.
54:01I am finished!
54:03I am spinning around.
54:07Move out of my way.
54:09I know you're feeling me.
54:11Cause you're liking it like this.
54:13I'm breaking it down.
54:15I'm not the same.
54:17I know you're feeling me.
54:19Cause you're liking it like this.
