As the school holidays approach, the RNLI is urging people to remember the lifesaving technique if they get into trouble in the water. Lifeguards were on hand on Tuesday to demonstrate the float to live technique at Tenby Harbour to mark the launch of the campaign.
It is estimated that 48.97M people will be heading to the coast or open water at least once over the summer.
RNLI lifeguards will return to selected Welsh beaches this weekend in preparation for the May half term.
Chris Cousens, Regional Water Safety Lead said: “We know that there will be a huge amount of people visiting the Welsh coast over the coming months and we want everyone to remember our Float to Live advice. Instinctively, most people who find themselves struggling in the water will begin to panic, swim, or thrash about.
“We’re urging people to ignore this instinct and remember to float: Tilt your head back, with your ears submerged. Relax and try to breathe normally.
“Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat if you need to. It’s fine if your legs sink – we all float differently. By doing this, you give yourself the chance to rest and recover your breathing. Once you’ve regained control of your breathing, you can call for help or swim to safety.”
For the last 25 years, RNLI lifeguards have been making beaches safer across the UK. They share safety advice, provide first aid to those who need it and save the lives of those who get in trouble in the water.
During that time, they have made more than 48 million preventative actions, attended more than 330,000 incidents and aided more than 440,000 people on beaches around the UK and the Channel Islands. Last year in Wales, RNLI beach lifeguards saved 28 lives and aided a further 5,507 people.

00:00It's important to remember that when you do fall into the water, that if you try to float, everyone floats
00:07differently, but the key points are if you lie on your back like a starfish, tilt the water into the
00:14water.
00:14The message is simple, float to live. According to the RNLI, this is what you should do if you're in
00:21difficulty in the water.
00:23It keeps you breathing, nice and calm, and it also gives you the chance to get your energy back so
00:27you can call for help there.
00:28And with warmer months on the way, the RNLI say that at least 48 million people across the UK will
00:35be heading to the coast at least once this summer.
00:38And beaches like this may look calm, but things can change pretty quickly.
00:43Stay there, stay there, stay there.
00:46And that's when the charity step in, seen here rescuing a group of teenagers near Porthcore last summer.
00:53And even today, crews in Tembi were out making sure people didn't get into difficulty.
00:59Last year, the RNLI saved 28 lives in Wales and helped over 5,000 people who got into trouble at
01:06sea.
01:06And these lifeguards are preparing to start patrolling selected beaches from this weekend.
01:11We try and put out as many messages online and in person about water safety.
01:17We do a lot of primary school education talks.
01:19But I think everybody could always know a bit more about the sea, even me now.
01:23We encourage everybody to swim at lifeguarded beach.
01:26So if you are in trouble, we will see you and we will come to help.
01:29We've got warmer weather on the way, school holidays coming up.
01:32What would your message be to families that do want to come down to the beach and go into the
01:37sea?
01:37Always swim on a lifeguarded beach and always swim between the red and yellow flags.
01:41If you do find yourself in trouble, float to live.
01:44And if you have any questions, please come and ask.
01:46From Ceredigion to Swansea, Dembyshire to Bridgend, the RNLI will be out in force across beaches this summer.
01:54But they hope that people will have a bit more knowledge on how to stay afloat while they wait for
01:59their help.
