Cathy Powell, 78, and Colleen White, 75, share stories from their time volunteering together at Orange Sky in Queanbeyan, NSW.
Transcript
00:00I came across Orange Sky when it was very new in the country.
00:04I happened to be in Melbourne with my daughter, and we were at St Kilda or somewhere,
00:10and we saw this crowd of people and wondered what was going on,
00:13and it was two young men, as they call, talking to a crowd,
00:21and I thought, that's something I'd like to do.
00:26And it's the most rewarding, one of the most rewarding things in my life.
00:31Not once, when I was talking to you about driving,
00:36but it's not once that I have ever driven home from a shift thinking,
00:42well, that was a waste of time, because it never is.
00:46I have worked for a large accounting firm for 30-odd years
00:54and retired in 2006 and went back as a casual for about another six years.
01:02And then from there, I decided I would like to do some volunteering,
01:07and it was actually through Cathy, who introduced me to Orange Goat.
01:13And I went online and did the course and decided, yes, I'd love to drive as well.
01:18And I've been on the same shift with Cathy ever since.
01:22Oh, when we were up at Crofton Street, there was a man who came regularly,
01:33and he's very intelligent and very well-educated,
01:36and, you know, the story of how he got to be where he is, it's not good.
01:44But then I was a teacher of English and Asian Studies, you know,
01:51back in the days when I was in the classroom,
01:54and the sentiment that he'd come along every week
01:58and he had a particular poem, which, you know, he would quiz me about.
02:05And, you know, I had to be able to guess, so, you know,
02:08it was good from my memory that I'm aged.
02:12And then you'd have long literary discussions about stuff.
02:17And that was his day, his important.
02:21After I got to know him well, he said, like, you know,
02:24how long do you search for the – because there seem to be leaked themes,
02:29and soon I flew from one week to the other, and he said,
02:32oh, I start thinking about Saturday night, and, you know,
02:36I've got it all set by the time he came along.
02:40There's one young chap who – he's young,
02:45and that story was probably – had a lot of sort of impact on me,
02:54who was sort of left to – left by himself from a family sort of situation.
03:01And he sort of suddenly found himself in Queenby
03:05and didn't have any ID on him to be able to then have to go through
03:13the process of getting a, you know, to get a job.
03:17You've got to have ID.
03:18And he couldn't – he didn't even have a birth certificate.
03:22So – and that's just the time how something like that can impact somebody
03:28over weeks and weeks that become months and months and months.
03:33I just never have – never comprehended that that could sort of happen.
03:43Thank you so much.
