00:34Quando Disney Plus first came about,
00:48eram, a revista do original X-Men, a série de animados.
01:07Eu me lembro, quando Pizza Hut estava fazendo a promo
01:09com o Night of the Sentinels 1 e 2 no VHS, eu usava essa coisa.
01:32O X-Men se sentem baseada.
02:49pessoas desculpadas desculpadas criaram escapadas,
02:53os que são diferentes,
02:55por problemas de suas próprias vidas.
02:57É um desculpado que deve ser derrubado.
03:02O original foi sobre revivir a série,
03:06não sobre rebooting a série,
03:08não sobre remaking a série.
03:09Muitas pessoas dirão,
03:10é a série X-Men,
03:11a série de animais.
03:12Eles continuam com um dos meus favoritos shows.
03:15O show que eu cresciam com,
03:16o show que eu estou introduzindo meus filhos para.
03:18O que eles vão fazer com isso?
03:19Onde eles vão ir com isso?
03:21E nós somos aqueles mesmos.
03:23Todos que fazemos esse show é aquele fã,
03:25dizendo, onde queremos ir?
03:27Se a série nunca se desculpou,
03:29se continuassem,
03:36mas é a única forma.
03:38Ele nunca voltou?
03:39De novo,
03:45no 90s,
03:46e ver onde isso pode nos levar,
03:48referenciando a história de comics desde então,
03:50mas realmente tapando
03:51a nostalgia factor da série.
03:54Heads up!
03:57So muito da conversa
03:59foi sobre,
04:00não apenas apagando a homenagem
04:01para o estilo original,
04:03mas emulando
04:04as lembranças das pessoas
04:05do estilo original.
04:06Oh, meus stars e garters,
04:09nós devemos nos acompanhar.
04:10Então,
04:11temos Larry Huston,
04:12o diretor,
04:13que está voltando
04:14para nós,
04:15e os Leewalds,
04:17que foram os primeiros
04:18primeiros da série.
04:19Disney Plus
04:20começou a ser X-Men,
04:22a série de animação,
04:22eu quero dizer, em 2019,
04:24e nós fomos amados
04:26à sua resposta,
04:28mas nós não tínhamos
04:29que algo vai acontecer
04:31até que isso realmente
04:32começou a acontecer.
04:33Sim,
04:33eles estavam
04:34tudo perto do
04:35do vest,
04:36e então
04:37nós tínhamos a
04:37phone call
04:37e eu disse,
04:38que está acontecendo,
04:39nós temos um grande
04:40staff
04:40de
04:41incrível,
04:42incrível,
04:42incrível,
04:43que você e seu amigo
04:45Larry Huston
04:45gostaria de envolver
04:46as consultas.
04:47Eu não acredito
04:48que eu estava
04:49ouvindo o que eu estava
04:49ouvindo,
04:50que,
04:51realmente,
04:51chamando
04:52X-Men 97,
04:53porque eles estão
04:54picking
04:54onde a série
04:55terminou,
04:56incrível,
04:57e incrível.
04:58Trask
04:59gostaria de
04:59que humanos
04:59e mutantes
05:00ir à guerra
05:00do que trabalhar
05:01juntos.
05:02Todos ganhamos
05:03quando os homens
05:03como ele
05:03falam.
05:04Você parece
05:04como Charles.
05:06Ele seria
05:06orgulhoso hoje.
05:08Obrigado,
05:09Dr. Cooper,
05:09mas,
05:10sinceramente,
05:11isso é um
05:12equipe.
05:13Eu me lembro
05:14quando nós
05:15nos chamamos
05:16para saber que
05:17nós estávamos
05:18fazendo a série,
05:18eles nos disseram
05:19uma história
05:20de fazer a mesma
05:21chamada
05:22de Stan Lee
05:22quando eles
05:23fizeram a série
05:24original.
05:25E,
05:25como Stan
05:26disse,
05:27eles nos disseram
05:28que eles têm
05:29o nosso back,
05:30e que eles
05:31se tornasse orgulhoso.
05:31Eu sei que
05:32eu estou
05:32tão difícil
05:33hoje,
05:33mas eu não sabia
05:35como os X-Men
05:36poderia continuar
05:36sem a professora.
05:38Eu pensei que era
05:38para mim.
05:40mas o seu son
05:41não precisa de mim.
05:43Ele tem todos você.
05:46Meu mundo super-hero
05:48começou com
05:49mitologia,
05:49mitologia grega,
05:51mitologia,
05:51mitologia,
05:52a literatura que eu leio
05:53é basicamente
05:54uma fantasia.
05:55Então eu descobriu
05:56comics.
05:56Eu não me lembro
05:57exatamente quando,
05:58mas o meu primeiro
05:59comic foi
06:00Iron Man.
06:03E aí eu consegui
06:04X-Men,
06:05Spider-Man,
06:06todos eles.
06:06Eu comecei
06:07como um filho,
06:08como um filho,
06:11como um filho,
06:12como um filho.
06:12Eu fui o ultimo
06:13mutante.
06:14Eu fui
06:15à escola
06:16em Hufstra,
06:17em Long Island,
06:17e eu
06:18became
06:18um
06:20um
06:21sucesso
06:21em torno.
06:21Inventor.
06:22E o primeiro
06:24toy
06:25que eu
06:26queria
06:26transformar
06:26em um show
06:27era X-Men.
06:28E eu
06:29me senti,
06:30que se eu
06:30tomar algo
06:31tão emocionante,
06:32crianças não
06:33sentiram que
06:33eles são
06:34como eles.
06:35Então,
06:35então,
06:35X-Men,
06:36e o Stan Lee
06:37é com
06:37muitas dessas
06:38reuniões,
06:39e ninguém
06:40ganhou.
06:40eles tentaram
06:41durante os 80s
06:43para conseguir
06:44X-Men
06:44na televisão
06:45e ninguém
06:46em Hollywood
06:47pensava que
06:48ele seria
06:48sucesso.
06:49Ah,
06:50super-heróis,
06:50você não pode
06:51fazer um
06:52sucesso
06:52TV show
06:53em torno.
06:54Então,
06:54foi um
06:55não-starter.
06:57Parece que
06:57um dia que
06:58enda em Y
06:58quando você
06:59dizia assim.
07:00Precisamente.
07:01E nós
07:01enfrentamos como sempre
07:03temos,
07:03como uma família.
07:08quando fomos
07:09em Marvel Productions
07:10em mid-80s,
07:11eu tinha dois
07:12supervisores.
07:13Um foi
07:13Stan Lee,
07:14o outro
07:15foi Margaret
07:16Lesh.
07:16Margaret
07:16Lesh
07:17sempre
07:18acreditava
07:18no conceito
07:19da X-Men.
07:20Então,
07:20a partir de seis
07:21anos,
07:22ela se tornou
07:23a CEO
07:23da Fox Kids
07:25Network.
07:25Ela tinha
07:26o poder
07:26green-lead
07:27coisas
07:27agora.
07:28Então,
07:28ela chamou
07:28me,
07:29Will Mineo,
07:30Eric,
07:31Julia,
07:31e alguns
07:32outros
07:32e disse,
07:33ok,
07:33vamos fazer
07:34o X-Men,
07:35vamos fazer
07:35isso no
07:36air.
07:36E ela é
07:37o secret
07:38super-hero
07:38que ninguém
07:38sabe sobre.
07:39Can você
07:40hear
07:40o aplausos?
07:41Eu amo
07:41vocês!
07:42Stick
07:43comigo,
07:44e você
07:44X-Men
07:44serão
07:45a
07:45gente.
07:46Os
07:46pessoas
07:47sobre
07:47ela
07:47não
07:47acreditaram
07:48que X-Men
07:49iria fazer
07:49nada.
07:50E ela disse,
07:51ok,
07:51eu vou dar 13
07:52episódios,
07:52mas é isso,
07:53e se isso
07:53fails,
07:54você é
07:54de um trabalho.
07:55E ela disse,
07:56ok,
07:56eu vou dar
07:56aquele risco.
07:57Você
07:58foi
07:58hired
07:58para fazer
07:5813
07:59episódios
07:59uma
08:00season,
08:00e eu consegui

08:41Não havia internet, nada disso, apenas a rating.
08:53para manter a show no ar.
09:05com as pessoas assistindo a amarelo,
09:24mas ela me enviar uma resposta.
09:37Passem all the way down the hall e tudo bem, floor to ceiling, stacked,
09:41e ela me deu, e ela disse, cada um dos, é o cara de x-men.
09:43Dianos amados. O que eu não fiz?
09:46Meu filho mudou.
09:53para promocional purposes.
09:55Eu disse, nós somos todos assim.
09:57E eu acho que a melhor evidência
10:00foi X-Men.
10:08Você tem que lembrar,
10:09em 90s, entre os Scooby-Doo
10:10ou Super Friends,
10:11que era o standard.
10:12Então, nós queríamos que quando os kids
10:14saw Night of the Sentinels 1 e 2,
10:26é tipo,
10:27você vai matar um personagem
10:28no primeiro episódio
10:29e você tem uma mulher
10:30sendo chasedada por um robot.
10:32Sand aside,
10:33eu tenho que apreendê-se
10:35a mutação.
10:35Nós fizemos isso de forma
10:36que as pessoas falam,
10:38o que vai acontecer?
10:39O que vai acontecer?
10:40Nós queríamos que ele
10:41para o show
10:42e fazer um must-se show
10:44cada semana.
10:45Life não é muito melhor
10:46do que isso.
10:47Nós todos sabíamos
10:48que há algo em a história
10:50que é como uma missão
10:52e você sente isso.
10:54então, você não pode esperar
10:56para o próximo episódio.
10:57Eu ainda me lembro
10:59de volta para a escola
11:00para assistir
11:02cada novo episódio.
11:03E eu acho que
11:03foi o primeiro
11:04serializado
11:05de entretenimento
11:07que eu já assisti.
11:08Foi a primeira vez que eu me lembro
11:09de ter, como,
11:11de cima de todos os episódios.
11:13E aquele impressionante
11:14que você teve
11:15quando tudo estava
11:16a ser que continuou
11:17que aconteceu
11:17em cada dia
11:19em que esse show.
11:20Era minha forma
11:21de comentários.
11:22Eu assisti
11:23aquela série original
11:23e depois
11:24me queria ir
11:25para o cinema
11:25e ver o que estava acontecendo.
11:27Não só com X-Men,
11:28mas com every
11:29comic book
11:30na tela.
11:30E quando eu
11:32me tornou
11:32filmaço
11:33e me identificou
11:34com os escritórios
11:34e diretores,
11:35você sempre
11:36veria que
11:37que isso
11:37vem
11:37como um
11:38seminal
11:38trabalho
11:39em suas vidas.
11:40Você pode ver
11:41que a amor
11:41de comics
11:42para as pessoas
11:44que crescem
12:06Yo, Cyclops, hit me!
12:31É a tangibilidade do mundo.
12:57What a kick! Can we do it again?
13:02Animation has just come leaps and bounds,
13:05not only with the technology, but also with the styles.
13:08Not just animation style, whether it's 2D or CG,
13:12but also in how animation is approached with directing.
13:16Emmy and Chase are the episodic directors,
13:19which means that they did every other episode.
13:21Jake set up the directing style with the first episode,
13:24and then they followed suit.
13:26For me, it was a discussion of, well, where do we go tonally?
13:28You know, because there are things in the original series
13:31that you might see as cheesy, but actually aren't.
13:34Maybe that was a budget.
13:35I mean, you know, you watch it now,
13:36and you can see recycled animation, and you can tell,
13:38oh, they just didn't have the means to go back in with retakes.
13:41And we've actually spoken with Larry about that since.
13:43You know, I only had so much time,
13:45so I was like, I had to get it done.
13:48Now that we have that ability,
13:50and we can put that budget behind it,
13:51how do we then go, okay, so then what is this show?
13:54Because is it just the visuals?
13:56Is it just the storytelling?
13:58And I think what we all ended up deciding on is,
14:00well, I just want the audience to feel
14:02the same way we felt watching it as kids.
14:05Rogue always come to Gambit's rescue.
14:07I've always wanted to make content
14:09that was as potent as the stuff that inspired me.
14:12Because we all stand on the shoulders
14:14of the people prior to us, right?
14:16Never thought to ask the professor
14:18to show me how he did what he did so well.
14:20Some lessons are taught, Scott.
14:22Others are learned.
14:24We're all huge X-Men fans,
14:26and we wanted to see them elevated.
14:28And it forces us to be creative.
14:30It forces us to figure out,
14:32okay, what's the clearest way to say this?
14:35What's the most impactful thing that we can do here,
14:38especially when it comes to action?
14:41Because we would like to embellish on all of that stuff.
14:43How can we make every little piece of action on screen
14:46as potent as possible?
14:48Animation is being pushed so much.
14:50The bar is being raised so high.
14:51So how do we still stay relevant and stay on that bar,
14:55but keep that nostalgic feel?
14:57Man, talk about simpler times.
14:59It's unreal.
15:00I should probably find a way out of here.
15:02What's the rush?
15:03These levels are taking me back.
15:06We're set in 97.
15:07We are essentially a period piece.
15:09What was being done in cinema between 96 and 98?
15:12How was live action being shot?
15:14How were things being animated?
15:15What was TV animation doing?
15:17What lenses were being used?
15:19What was considered cinematic at the time?
15:21What was considered groundbreaking at the time?
15:23It's great to have a lot of those 90s tropes
15:25in our back pocket
15:25because that is just a fundamental tactile feel
15:29in the DNA of the OG show.
15:31While the idea of cell-drawn animation
15:33with flat backgrounds
15:34kept you to a very flat frame,
15:37we are honoring that almost 80% of the time.
15:41But one thing that makes it X-Men 97
15:43and not X-Men the animated series
15:45is that we are blowing past that at times
15:47for emotional effect.
15:50So big crescendo moments in battles
15:53and in fight scenes
15:54and even in some of our bigger emotional scenes
15:57push past that flat plane
15:58into a more three-dimensional space.
16:01And that's something that our studio partner,
16:03Studio Mir,
16:04who produced a lot of anime,
16:05really allows us to do effectively.
16:07What was done at the time
16:08was the top of that animation scale,
16:11was the top of the action
16:12and what was available
16:13and what could be done at the time.
16:15And our responsibility now is to do the same,
16:17to do the top.
16:18Like, that's how high the bar is.
16:20We were able to look at the footage
16:22in this thing called DI.
16:23It's a really cool post-process
16:25where we get to throw a filter on it, right?
16:27We were thinking about a film filter
16:28to make it look kind of closer to 90s film.
16:31So you get, like, a little bit of that jitter
16:33that you would have from the film processing.
16:36You get noise grain.
16:37Film processing makes the blacks pop out even harder.
16:41I'm cool with Rock focusing a bit more
16:42just to go a little more cinematically
16:44into the era of it all.
16:46And then we also have to put it
16:47to widescreen format, right?
16:49So we got to make it more cinematic.
16:51Looky ahead!
16:53Hey, y'all.
16:55They be busy doing a bit of renovating
16:57since Gambit's last visit.
16:59We wanted to make sure
17:00we were honoring the Lewalds and Larry
17:01and all the work that they had set down,
17:03that it was never going to be about,
17:05well, that was kind of cheesy,
17:06so how cheesy can we go?
17:07More like, no, you guys were actually
17:09building something incredibly beautiful.
17:12Look at how much it affected
17:14a whole generation of people.
17:15And to carry that torch
17:16is not only a lot of responsibility,
17:18but we're actually excited for that.
17:20I can't wait.
17:21I want to bring honor to these characters.
17:22Well, if being an X-Man teaches anything,
17:24Miss Tilby,
17:25it's to expect the unexpected.
17:31One of the most important aspects
17:33to the series is the music.
17:38When you hear that rendition
17:39of the opening title,
17:40what's amazing is not that it sounds new,
17:45but that it sounds like it really celebrates
17:48and props up what was beautiful
17:51about that original music.
17:53In terms of IDing a show,
17:55I mean, it's so important.
17:56I mean, I grew up in the 60s,
17:57and there's a lot of shows that
17:59all you have to do is hear two or three notes,
18:01and you know exactly who it is.
18:02And so we knew that for the X-Man,
18:04we need to have something
18:05that was very distinctive
18:06and strong and driving.
18:09Back in the 90s,
18:11I was given, like, I think, what,
18:12a weekend, like two or three days
18:14to draw the intro.
18:15And the intro's going to be about
18:16maybe a minute, minute, four seconds,
18:18something like that.
18:19I drew two minutes.
18:20I just let the fanboy roll out of my head.
18:22I just started drawing images
18:23and just let stuff pour out.
18:26And once I got it done and finished,
18:27then we went back
18:28and just took the two minutes
18:29and culled it down to just one minute,
18:31the one what everybody knows right now.
18:35My storybook was actually done before the music.
18:38And so once we got that done,
18:40that's the next part
18:41was trying to get the music
18:41that was driving
18:43to try and match the high pace.
18:45and if a memory serves me right,
18:46I think it was, like,
18:47maybe the 13th version of the music
18:49until we said, yeah, that's it.
18:51Because the first 12 was like, no.
18:54It didn't have the punch.
18:55It didn't have the excitement.
18:56And so it took time.
18:58And then it magically merged together
19:00and everything worked out just fine.
19:14The OG show leaned into The Prejudice.
19:16It didn't shy away from it,
19:17but it also didn't dumb it down
19:18or didn't treat the audience like a kid.
19:20It just told stories.
19:22It told stories
19:23and it had a greater story to tell.
19:26For us to be a successor,
19:28we got to kind of carry that DNA in.
19:29Your heart may beat for me,
19:32but I can't feel it.
19:36You, you light up everything you touch,
19:39but never me.
19:44Every story we tell in the show
19:45is born out of a human drive,
19:48out of the characters
19:49showing the writers where to take them.
19:52They're following those relationships
19:54and it's really about
19:55driving at the human heart.
20:00The world around these characters
20:02might be chaos,
20:03but their humanity,
20:05their soul,
20:05their internal feelings
20:07and love for one another
20:08is the thing that's going to see them through.
20:09Right now, we have to be strong.
20:11For the team,
20:12for every mutant still out there
20:14who's watching these images.
20:15They need hope.
20:17It's what the professor would do.
20:19And let's go remind the world
20:21that times like these
20:22are when dreaming matters most.
20:26Our number one priority
20:28was to bring on
20:30as many of the original cast members
20:32as we possibly could.
20:34Back then,
20:35we wanted to elevate the storytelling.
20:37And so one of the things that we did
20:39was we auditioned people
20:41who did stage plays
20:42as opposed to voice actors
20:44who worked just in the,
20:45you know,
20:45Saturday morning cartoon media
20:47because we wanted to get actors
20:48who have a range of inflections
20:50in how they act
20:52and they didn't sound like
20:53everybody else out there.
20:54I think it helped add to the character
20:56and quality of the show
20:57because these guys
20:58brought the characters to life.
21:00Don't you ever get tired
21:01of listening to yourself?
21:02Not when I'm talking about you, Chef.
21:12I had no clue
21:13about the X-Men at the time.
21:15I had never heard of the X-Men.
21:17I don't think any of us had
21:19except George Booza.
21:21They didn't tell us
21:21the title of the show
21:22that we were going to read for.
21:24They said Project X.
21:25And I'm reading and I'm reading.
21:27And I said,
21:28this is X-Men.
21:29So strange
21:30and yet so familiar.
21:33I used to buy a lot of comic books
21:35when I was a kid
21:36and I remember
21:38when the first X-Men comic book came out
21:40and I saw it on the newsstand
21:42and I do remember reading it.
21:44And I knew right off the bat
21:46that I was auditioning for X-Men.
21:48It appears to be
21:49a deliberate trail.
21:50I might as well have gone
21:51and auditioned for Star Wars.
21:53To be a part of that
21:55at that stage of my career
21:56was a real high point.
21:58You are a work of art.
22:03The majority of us
22:04had done quite a bit of theater
22:07coming into the 90s.
22:09I was a serious actor, you know.
22:11I did movies, television, theater,
22:15a radio drama.
22:16I was not doing voiceovers.
22:18I was a singer.
22:19I was doing jingles my whole life
22:20in the city of Toronto
22:21and flying to New York,
22:23flying to Chicago,
22:24whatever to sing.
22:24My background is very much
22:26the theater.
22:28I've done a couple of voice things
22:30for commercials and stuff,
22:31but my very first animated audition
22:34ever was this character.
22:37My agent at the time
22:38was here in Toronto,
22:40said,
22:41Lenore, I want you to go in
22:42for this new series.
22:43They're looking for
22:44a sexy husky voice
22:46with a southern accent.
22:49And I'd played a lot of southerners
22:50in movies and television
22:52by that time.
22:52But I didn't go
22:53to the first auditions.
22:55I just wasn't that interested.
22:57You've given us a place
22:58where we belong, professor.
23:00Just takes us hard-headed ones
23:02longer to realize it.
23:04So then a few months go by
23:05and they had callbacks.
23:07And she said,
23:07Lenore,
23:08they haven't found
23:10the right actress yet
23:11for this part
23:12because it's you.
23:14So get your ass in gear
23:15and go.
23:16So I did.
23:18And I walked into the studio,
23:20put the headphones on,
23:22the producers were in L.A.
23:23and I took a look
23:24at the picture
23:25of the character.
23:26I was like,
23:26yeah, hell yeah,
23:27I can do that.
23:27And then I just opened up
23:29my mouth and basically said,
23:31you know,
23:32my daddy liked to kill himself
23:33when he found out
23:34I was a mutant.
23:36You know?
23:37And I heard all these screams
23:39and yells and everything.
23:40They're like,
23:41don't let her leave the building.
23:43That's her.
23:44That's Rogue.
23:45This is going to be more satisfying
23:46than I thought.
23:47Once we heard the audition,
23:48we said,
23:49oh, that's it.
23:49We got it.
23:50It was the same with Wolverine.
23:52This one's mine.
23:55I went in and they showed me
23:56a picture of him.
23:57You know,
23:57they explained who he was
23:58and stuff and that he was Canadian.
24:00I said, well, that's good.
24:01The first line was like,
24:02all right,
24:02you egg-sucking piece
24:03of gutter trash.
24:04You always did like
24:05picking on people
24:06shorter than you.
24:07Well, I'm shorter.
24:08Pick on me.
24:11They just went,
24:12oh, gosh,
24:13give him some more lines.
24:14You know, so.
24:14It just sort of happened like that.
24:16It was like it was meant to be.
24:17Just call me
24:19Wolverine.
24:22Wolverine.
24:23So impulsive.
24:25I identified with Hank
24:26right off the bat.
24:28When I was a kid in school,
24:30I got bullied.
24:31I was a big kid.
24:32I was overweight.
24:33And I got into
24:33quite a few beefs
24:34on the schoolyard.
24:36And it was there
24:36that I learned
24:37that even though I'm big,
24:39if you retaliate,
24:41you will be the one
24:42who they blame.
24:44So think before you act
24:45and try and defuse a situation
24:48and walk away.
24:49And this is what Hank does.
24:50They must see
24:51that we are not a threat
24:52to mankind,
24:54but are a part of it.
24:55He won't resort
24:56to his abilities,
24:58his superpowers,
24:59unless there's
24:59absolutely no other recourse.
25:01He will try and talk
25:03and reason his way
25:04out of a situation
25:04before he will use violence.
25:06But then when he does,
25:09watch out.
25:13I summon the full power
25:15of the storm!
25:17I had gotten this audition
25:19for my very first animation
25:22and I was out in Stratford
25:24and I was doing Shakespeare
25:27and I really only had one day
25:29that I could come into the city.
25:31Everything was very rushed
25:32and so I'm looking to hold on
25:35to why I'm there
25:37and what can I possibly bring
25:39to this audition
25:40and then they said
25:41that she was a queen
25:42and I went,
25:43okay.
25:43I don't know a whole lot
25:44about her,
25:45but I can do queen.
25:47I must keep my emotions
25:48in check,
25:49lest my powers
25:51rage out of control.
25:52She played right
25:53into my very natural strengths.
25:56I've never been
25:57a subtle actress.
25:58You know,
25:59I do it big.
26:00Go big or go home.
26:01I am free!
26:07I'm very fond of the Nightcrawler.
26:09Our time together
26:11meant a great deal
26:11to both of us.
26:12I just remember
26:13they called me in
26:14and there was this kind of
26:16moment of landing
26:19in the part
26:20and he was like
26:21both passionate
26:22but yet spiritual
26:24is something gentle about him
26:25but something fierce about him.
26:26I remember finishing the read
26:28and there was this pause
26:29and I kind of looked over
26:31into the booth
26:32at Dan Hennessey
26:33who was the director
26:33and he paused
26:34and he looked at me
26:35and he goes
26:36he's a very passionate guy,
26:38isn't he?
26:38And I was like
26:39yeah.
26:41Do you want to do it again?
26:42Sure.
26:42And then that
26:43so that was my very first
26:44animated audition
26:46and there was something
26:47about the script
26:47the kind of complexity
26:48of the character
26:49which just kind of
26:50brought it out of me.
26:51I am overwhelmed.
26:53You X-Men
26:53are experienced
26:54with such things.
26:55Well, you come
26:56to the right place, honey.
27:01When we first started
27:02this series
27:02we recorded together
27:04possibly six of us
27:06in the studio
27:07at a time.
27:08What they found
27:09is there was too much spill
27:10happening between mics
27:13not to mention
27:14that we could barely
27:15get the scenes done
27:16because we were laughing
27:17so hard.
27:18Not at the script
27:19just at the goofs
27:21in the room
27:21that were so talented.
27:24He better be more careful
27:25with his mouth.
27:27You better stop worrying
27:28about my mouth
27:29and start worrying
27:31about these.
27:32I mean, I just remember
27:34my first day
27:34in the studio
27:36there was Cal Dodd
27:37there was Lenore Zan
27:38and it was pretty wild.
27:40I saw Cal Dodd
27:42hunch his shoulders up
27:43and make fists
27:45and suddenly
27:45he dropped into the voices
27:47and said,
27:47listen here, bub.
27:48And I was like,
27:49oh, okay.
27:49It really taught me
27:51that, you know,
27:51doing animated voices
27:53is not just standing
27:54in front of a mic
27:55not moving.
27:56There was actually
27:56like full body expression
27:58involved.
27:58You cannot conceive
27:59nor can I
28:01the appalling strangeness
28:02of the mercy of God.
28:04You were pulling punches
28:05on the dock today.
28:07When we go up there
28:08if you want to end it
28:09and end it fast
28:10hit
28:11and hit to kill.
28:14I just interrupt everybody
28:15because I'm Wolverine.
28:17Rogue will be in the middle
28:17of something really important
28:19and I'll say,
28:20I say,
28:21are you just about finished?
28:23There are other people here
28:24that have to talk too.
28:26Stuff the philosophy.
28:28Let's go kick his butt.
28:30At one point
28:31they were turning off
28:32my microphone.
28:33I said,
28:33don't you do that.
28:34Leave that on
28:34because this will be good.
28:36I go.
28:37I want to go.
28:38It was magical.
28:40You know,
28:40it was a really
28:41magical chemistry
28:43that we all had.
28:45Eventually they split us up
28:47and yet we would all
28:48use the same studio
28:49so we'd see each other
28:50coming and going.
28:51Everybody else
28:52had different jobs.
28:53Very few people
28:54do strictly voice.
28:55At the time
28:56we were doing
28:57the first couple of seasons
28:58I was on another series
28:59just around the corner
29:00from the air
29:01on Maniac Mansion
29:02which was a George Lucas thing.
29:04I was doing Shakespeare
29:06when I auditioned for this
29:08for the whole,
29:08you know,
29:09first season.
29:10I was in Stratford.
29:11I had shows
29:13every night.
29:14Monday was our dark day
29:16and so every Monday
29:17I got in my car
29:19bright and early
29:20and came down
29:21and recorded
29:22X-Men.
29:23rise fog
29:24and divert
29:25your enemy
29:26from her path.
29:28Storm
29:28your master command.
29:31Back then
29:31I was doing
29:32Kung Fu
29:33with David Carradine
29:34and it was a two-hander
29:36more or less
29:36so I was working
29:3712, 14 hour days
29:39on that
29:39and I would do
29:40the X-Men
29:42literally
29:42on my lunch hour
29:43or in a break
29:44that I had
29:45that was kind of
29:45like lunch
29:46throughout the day.
29:47Relax Cyclops.
29:49All work
29:49and no play
29:50make shock
29:51and dull boy.
29:52I'd have to
29:52drive from the studio
29:54down to do
29:55the X-Men
29:56but not knowing
29:57that it was
29:58actually
30:00becoming a hit.
30:09I think it was
30:10just the word of mouth.
30:11We just heard
30:12gradually that
30:13you know
30:14people were watching it
30:15and fans that normally
30:16might not be
30:18into
30:18that type
30:20of animation
30:21and that storyline
30:22are talking about it.
30:24You don't know
30:25what you've done.
30:26You ain't seen
30:27nothing yet.
30:28You know
30:28the characters
30:29are now
30:30kind of iconic
30:31but at the time
30:32they were just
30:33you know
30:34these fascinating
30:35complex characters
30:37with some
30:38really interesting
30:39dialogue
30:40dialogue with
30:42depth
30:42that you wouldn't
30:43expect from
30:44a weekly
30:45cartoon.
30:46The phoenix
30:47was a mythical
30:49bird
30:49that was
30:50consumed
30:51by fire
30:52but always
30:53rose again
30:55from the ashes.
30:56Perhaps
30:57that's what
30:57the phoenix
30:58represents
31:00hope
31:00which never dies.
31:02When it was over
31:02after five years
31:03I was like
31:04I didn't know
31:04what to do
31:04with myself
31:05like
31:05you know
31:06no more
31:07going to the
31:07studio
31:07to do him
31:08like
31:08well
31:09does he just
31:09fall off
31:10the face
31:10of the earth?
31:11What's going on?
31:12if I really
31:12missed him
31:13because
31:14he's me
31:15this busted
31:16mug ain't
31:16changed in
31:17a hundred
31:17years
31:18and you
31:18know it
31:19so it
31:19was so
31:20great
31:20to get
31:21back in
31:21him
31:21well
31:23Magneto
31:23ain't gonna
31:24change his
31:24mind
31:25just because
31:25we say
31:26please
31:26the man
31:28just declared
31:28war on
31:29the whole
31:29planet
31:29his day
31:31ends
31:31one
31:32way
31:33we're all
31:34gung-ho
31:35I mean
31:35there's no
31:35question about
31:36it
31:36I don't
31:36think
31:36there's
31:37a single
31:37person
31:37that said
31:39oh
31:39I don't
31:39know
31:39why would
31:41we want
31:41to do
31:41this
31:41oh yes
31:42absolutely
31:43let's go
31:44it's been
31:44too long
31:45my friend
31:45you know
31:46what's really
31:47cool is that
31:48it's the
31:49same studio
31:50that we
31:50recorded
31:51the X-Men
31:53in
31:53in the
31:5490s
31:55I
31:56am
31:56Storm
31:57mistress
31:58of the
31:59elements
31:59I value
32:01it in a
32:01completely
32:01different
32:02way
32:02and
32:03the time
32:04that I
32:05spend
32:06in the
32:06studio
32:07I
32:07appreciate
32:08and love
32:09it
32:09so much
32:10more
32:10surrender
32:11the boy
32:12or face
32:13my
32:13fury
32:14I love
32:15this stuff
32:15I love
32:16this character
32:17I love
32:18this show
32:18let them
32:19thunder
32:21for I
32:22am
32:23lightning
32:23I did go
32:25back and
32:25revisit the show
32:26because I
32:26wanted to
32:27you know
32:27make sure
32:28that I was
32:28going to be
32:29true to the
32:29character that
32:30was created
32:31all those
32:31years ago
32:31I just
32:32remember it
32:32was just
32:32literally
32:33all came
32:34flooding back
32:34to me
32:35none of you
32:35were there
32:36the day
32:36Genosha fell
32:37who dies
32:38next professor
32:39Gene
32:40been there
32:41done that
32:42I watched a
32:43couple of the
32:44episodes like
32:45A Rogue's Tale
32:46you know
32:47and my voice
32:48is naturally
32:49there anyway
32:50and so
32:51it just came
32:52back really
32:52quickly
32:53and then
32:54when I walked
32:54in the studio
32:55the very first
32:56time
32:57I was a little
32:58nervous
32:58because I
32:59was like
32:59oh my god
33:00you know
33:00like do I
33:01still have
33:01it
33:02and within
33:03two seconds
33:04really of
33:05opening up
33:06my mouth
33:06and saying
33:07the first
33:07couple of
33:08lines
33:08I was
33:09I was
33:09like
33:09yeah
33:10it's like
33:11a well
33:12worn leather
33:13jacket
33:13that you
33:14just slip
33:14in
33:15and away
33:15you go
33:16you end
33:17slower than
33:18snails
33:18and maple
33:19syrup
33:19I reckon
33:20we nab
33:20them now
33:21before our
33:21mystery boys
33:22move them
33:23again
33:23it's so
33:24funny how
33:25you know
33:25my lines
33:26stick in
33:27my head
33:27some of the
33:28best lines
33:29that I've
33:29had
33:30you know
33:30like
33:30you look
33:31about as
33:31nervous
33:32as a
33:32long-tailed
33:33cat
33:33in a room
33:33full of
33:34rocking chairs
33:35and yet
33:35here you
33:36are
33:37dragged in
33:38like a

33:53voicing the
33:53role of

33:54massive
33:55part of
33:55the season
33:56I know
