00:02Tell you what, this is hard. This sheep's definitely going to get bullied for a tackle.
00:07We've watched Reuben Owen grow up on his remote hill farm with his eight siblings.
00:12Do you want to do the honours, Sid? Buck her out.
00:14That was the old school way of doing it, Dad.
00:16That's where we used to start with the old sheers.
00:19Now he's building a business and a remarkable life in his Yorkshire home.
00:24We need a lot more in here, yeah. We're going faster.
00:26We're going. We're going as fast as we can.
00:27They're a great team, even on a job like this, where there's a bit of pressure to get it done.
00:32They're brilliant.
00:33We'll continue to follow him as he takes on new challenges with the support of friends and family.
00:38Do you want to give us a hand putting the wheel on?
00:40Righto, will do.
00:41I love working with Sid.
00:42He has always been helpful in his own little way.
00:45How do you get someone unstuck at the side of a pond?
00:47Brilliant, son. He's just brilliant.
00:49And witness him at work and play.
00:55As he leads a new generation of young people choosing to live and work in the idyllic Yorkshire Dales.
01:02No, I'd rather be.
01:03Oh, I love you too.
01:07My business has been going from strength to strength over the last four years.
01:11My brothers, Miles and Sid, are a real help, but they love farming too.
01:16Sunny and Kappa are a great crack to work with, and they're the muscle of the operation.
01:21Jess, my girlfriend, is from a farming family like me, and she can turn her hand to just about anything.
01:27And together, we're a great team.
01:36This week, it's late summer.
01:39It's all go in the Dales, and the three lads need to get their heads together.
01:43Ready? Three, two, one.
01:47To finish an epic wildlife pond, Reuben gets stuck in, while Kappa just gets stuck.
01:55How do you get someone unstuck at the side of a pond?
01:58Brilliant, sonny. Just brilliant.
02:00On Jess's farm...
02:02I see a cow.
02:04How many can you see, Reuben? Are they all there?
02:06...stop taking the heifers turns to chaos when the cows get greedy.
02:11Oh, you're just so cute, aren't you? Oh, yeah.
02:13Oh, oh, dirt rooms. More, please, more!
02:18Argh! It's in the laundry room.
02:21And while the boss is away...
02:23I bet you're missing the digging.
02:24Yeah, he's already dug two sandcastles smaller than a trench.
02:31Sonny and Kappa will play.
02:33What an absolute machine.
02:35This has got to be one of my favourite bikes so far.
02:39Oh, he's going to overtake me!
02:41No! No!
02:43No!
02:47Reuben's base of operation is in his childhood home of Swaledale
02:51in the north of the Yorkshire Dales.
02:59It's the end of summer, and farmers up and down the country
03:02are preparing for the colder months ahead.
03:10As the last of the season's rays spill over the glorious Yorkshire Dales,
03:15Reuben's girlfriend Jess has a long list of jobs to tick off
03:18before autumn rolls in.
03:21So, we're about to go and see your favourite characters.
03:25Yeah.
03:26The cows have had a free reign of the fields
03:29a short drive from Jess's family farm all summer,
03:31so a regular stock check is needed.
03:36There's a job at a wildlife pond waiting,
03:38but Reuben's promised to pitch in before he starts that.
03:41How many years are up there?
03:43Should be 16.
03:44Well, funnily enough to say that yesterday went up
03:46and they'd escaped.
03:47Someone left the gate open
03:48and next door's cows had mixed in with ours,
03:50so we had them all sought out yesterday.
03:54But because they're friendly,
03:55they all came to bite the bucket of feed,
03:57so it's easy and you're in shame.
03:58You can tell by your little green
03:59you're a big fan of these cows.
04:01Proper characters, aren't they?
04:02Yeah, they are.
04:07Right, so here we are.
04:10I see a cow.
04:11How many can you see, Ruth?
04:12Are they all there?
04:131, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
04:17They're all there.
04:18All here.
04:19They're all looking well, aren't they?
04:20They're looking great.
04:22But there's one in particular
04:24who has completely captured Jess's heart.
04:27There she is.
04:28Oh, no.
04:30Hi!
04:32Are you coming?
04:32Come on!
04:34This young Friesian is the calf of Jess's favourite cow,
04:38known as 30,
04:40and she's set to join the milking herd
04:42just like her mother.
04:44She's got his mother's eyes, doesn't it?
04:46Feety face, doesn't she?
04:48A bit of food should get her attention.
04:51Oh, are you just looking here?
04:52Here, here.
04:53Come and get some.
04:54Oh.
04:55Right, here.
04:56Now you're getting your confidence up.
04:58Oh, oh, you're at rooms.
05:00More, please, more!
05:01Oh!
05:03Oh, you're just so cute, aren't you?
05:05Oh, oh, oh, yes.
05:06Oh.
05:07Seems it's not just Jess who's smitten.
05:10Oh, friends are here.
05:11Hello!
05:11Hi!
05:12Yeah.
05:12You love God!
05:15That was a nice kiss.
05:17Oh!
05:18He's in the londrover.
05:20They'd best get out before the cows get in.
05:23No, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
05:28Manners, manners, manners.
05:30No!
05:30No!
05:33Jess's relationship with cows is quite credible, really.
05:36They all know that she's the boss cow.
05:39So when they're ready to go into the parlor and be milked, they already know Jess, so they're
05:43not freaked out.
05:44Come on, you lot!
05:45Oh!
05:46And I think she needs to work on favouritism.
05:49Because what's it?
05:50You're supposed to never let any of your children know which one's a favourite.
05:53Well, I have a slight feeling I know which one the favourite is in this bunch.
05:57You're just so cute.
05:59You're just so cute.
06:00Yeah.
06:01Right.
06:01Your turn.
06:03Hello.
06:04She'll take some off your hand.
06:05Do you want to jump on me?
06:07Yeah.
06:07Put some on your hand.
06:08She'll take it off you.
06:09Oh!
06:10That's naughty!
06:12Right, you've run out.
06:15You've run out.
06:16You've eaten it all.
06:17These feisty heifers are coming up to two years old, meaning they're nearly ready for
06:22the next stage of their lives.
06:24So these guys, they're about ready to be bold, aren't they?
06:27Yeah.
06:27They're big enough and they're old enough.
06:29We just need a bull because sadly we lost our bull at spring, didn't we?
06:32Yeah.
06:32So we're on the lookout for a bull at the minute.
06:34So they'll have a calf and then they'll go into the milking herd.
06:39And then there'll be trouble.
06:40And then there'll be trouble.
06:41Some of them are trouble already.
06:44She's eating the steering wheel now.
06:52Oh, well, we'd better go and get something done.
06:54I could spend all day stroking them, couldn't we?
06:56Yeah.
06:57But there's no time for that.
06:59Ruben's groundwork job is calling.
07:11On the edge of the Dales, where the landscape is rugged and untamed, Ruben, Capper and Sonny are wrapping up
07:18one of their biggest digs yet.
07:19A new wildlife pond that's already a hit with the locals.
07:23The feathered kind, that is.
07:28So today, the last day on the pond job.
07:31We've let the pond fill up.
07:32It's up to level.
07:34Ducks are on the pond.
07:36Quackles.
07:36Yeah, looking good.
07:38So I'm going to dig the last bit out here, just to make the pond a bit longer.
07:41This is going to be a bit of a shallower kind of bit for wading birds.
07:46Ah, yeah.
07:47Yeah.
07:47So, I'm going to sort this.
07:49I want you to go and just scrape up and build a nice tidy top.
07:52Sounds like a good plan.
07:54It's been months in the making, and with just a bit of grading left to do, it'll be another job
08:00ticked off Ruben's end of summer list.
08:02Three, two, one.
08:04Yeah.
08:05Let's get at it.
08:06Right, let's do some work.
08:07Right, let's go do some work.
08:08Let's do some work.
08:13It's not long before the lads spot a potential problem.
08:16It's coming from under here somewhere, isn't it?
08:19I'm going to this tree.
08:21A tiny stream has formed on the bank.
08:26To work out whether it's leaking from the pond, the boys turn detective.
08:32Right, you've got muddy water in there.
08:35And that is clean water trickling out of there.
08:37Yeah.
08:42It's coming out of the ground here.
08:44If it was the pond leaking, it'd be quite a bit of work, because you've got to line the pond
08:49with clay and stop it from leaking.
08:51So that means trying to evacuate all the water, which is a rather large job.
09:08On the Cumbrian border of the Yorkshire Dales, Sunny and Kappa have hit a soggy snag.
09:15No, it's coming out of here.
09:16If the new wildlife pond they've dug with Ruben is leaking, that's a major job to fix.
09:23That's a spring.
09:24That's a spring.
09:24That's a spring, that is, yeah.
09:25That's just a spring for Beck, that is.
09:29Hear it bubbling out?
09:30Sun flowing, that.
09:31Yeah.
09:32Does look clean water, doesn't it?
09:33It's too clean to be pond-like.
09:36Mystery solved.
09:37Time to tell the boss.
09:39Well, I think what's leaking here isn't the pond.
09:42It is a spring.
09:45Right.
09:45Whatever you say, Bellington, just tidy the job up and that'll do.
09:49Their speedy diagnosis has saved them from a mammoth extra dig.
09:54So we're not, we're not worried anymore about the pond draining itself.
09:59We've just found a freshwater spring.
10:03Cumbrian's finest drinking water.
10:05This is a good success.
10:08Sunny is a water whisperer.
10:11Right, clag that back in with a load of soil now, quickly.
10:22Over at Brough Castle, Jess's Cumbrian family farm,
10:25there's a vital job to finish before summer's end.
10:32So the plan of today is we've got the last 35 sheep to click.
10:36We've done about 350 this year.
10:39So, yeah, the final day, thank goodness.
10:45It's hard work, probably one of the hardest jobs of the year, I think.
10:50A few years' practice has sharpened Jess's clipping skills.
10:54You're a big girl.
10:55And today, she's helping her dad, Dave, with the final push.
11:00How do you feel you're doing?
11:01Hey.
11:02Do you feel you're getting better?
11:04Yeah, it takes time.
11:06I mean, sheep are getting bigger, aren't they?
11:08Yeah, they are.
11:10But no, it just takes time, really, and...
11:14Until you get a wriggler like this.
11:17Jess's little sister, Eva, is in charge of gathering the fleeces.
11:20And there's an art to it.
11:22How do you fold the wool?
11:24Right, well, you set off.
11:26Set off at the head.
11:27You flick it in.
11:29Right down.
11:31Roll it in.
11:32And then you leave the tail out.
11:33Like that.
11:35Then you roll it up.
11:37So get it into a ball like that.
11:40Then you get the tail bit and you twist it around.
11:44And then you wrap it, pick it up, and pull it back into itself.
11:49Like that.
11:50And then you put it in the bag.
11:53Yeah.
11:53Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
12:00Be nice to get them finished, Jess.
12:02Yeah, it will, won't it?
12:03Been hard work, haven't it?
12:04Yeah.
12:06Big, big yaus this year, haven't it?
12:08Big yaus, yeah.
12:09Ready for me fish and chips, like?
12:11Yeah, same.
12:14Right, Aves, you mark that one.
12:16Right on there.
12:18But yes, it would be my job when I was little, marking our sheep.
12:23Easy job for a little person.
12:26I like working with my dad and sister on the farm when it's lambing time and clipping time with the
12:31sheep.
12:31But I also like working with the cows when they're giving birth to baby cows.
12:38So when I was your age, Eve, I always did your job, jumped in the wall and watched Dad, you
12:43know,
12:43and then look where I am now.
12:46You made a good job, Eve. Well done. Thank you.
12:56Over at the wildlife pond, Sonny and Kappa may have solved the problem of the leaky spring, but there's another.
13:03The wet weather has created rather muddy terrain and Ruben's digger's in danger of becoming stuck.
13:10You know what I have to do, won't you? Build a road.
13:13No, a raft.
13:15Er, do you reckon you're going to get out of there successfully?
13:18So I can do this piece of fencing, moved out of the way, and then I can continue to manoeuvre
13:24myself out of the edge of the pond.
13:28To help the boss, Kappa and Sonny must navigate the boggy ground to shift the fence for Ruben's digger.
13:35Er, no way. No way. That's deep.
13:39Yeah.
13:40But it's not long before one of them comes a cropper.
13:43Sonny! Help!
13:46Why? I'm stuck.
13:48In an attempt to prevent Ruben from getting stuck, Kappa's got bogged himself.
13:55That was daft to you, innit?
13:56Yeah.
13:58How have you not got stuck yet, Sonny?
13:59Sonny, I've got brains.
14:01What, are you not going to, like, pull me out or something?
14:02One minute.
14:03How do you get someone unstuck at the side of a pond?
14:06Brilliant, Sonny, just brilliant.
14:09Go on, get yourself wiggled out!
14:11Jeremy, I can't get out!
14:13Alright, I'm going to chuck myself back, but you're going to hold on.
14:17Go on.
14:18Go on.
14:19Step, one step.
14:20Come on, come on, I'll push yourself further down, Sonny!
14:23Kappa's sinking lower by the minute.
14:26Alright, go on. Lift one leg out.
14:27I'm pushing, I'm doing it, I'm pushing my other leg down, though.
14:30Oh, Sonny, no!
14:32Sonny, Sonny, Sonny!
14:34I don't understand how you two have survived to the ages you are.
14:39It's like Michael Jackson.
14:40Go on.
14:43That's quality.
14:48Lean that way.
14:49Which way?
14:50To the bottom?
14:51Go on, keep leaning.
14:52Keep leaning.
14:52Keep leaning.
14:53Keep leaning.
14:57I've worked with Kappa from the start.
14:59Always amuses me.
15:00He's a legend.
15:02He gets himself in some funny old holes.
15:04Literally.
15:05How has that happened?
15:06I'm six foot six and now I'm two foot tall.
15:12That's it, you go in now.
15:18Pull me trousers.
15:22Sorry!
15:23Pull me out!
15:26Ow!
15:29That's enough!
15:30That's enough!
15:31That's enough, Sonny!
15:34Well, Sonny, give up, will you?
15:35What are you going to do, Jess?
15:36I'm a bit out of breath, I'm not going to lie.
15:38How's your legs feeling?
15:40I don't know.
15:40A bit weird.
15:42Them boots look heavy.
15:44I've lost my balance now, though.
15:47It's probably a good thing all round that the job's finished.
15:54There we go, job done.
15:55Banks pulled back.
15:56So that'll do for now.
15:57The ducks are happy.
15:59We're happy.
15:59We're happy.
16:00I'm away next week, so we get all tanned.
16:02You won't tan.
16:04You don't tan.
16:04You burn.
16:05You're Casper the Friendly Ghost.
16:07That's right.
16:10Right, so I'm leaving this lovely weather behind next week.
16:13Going to Cyprus with Jess, our first abroad holiday together.
16:16I've never actually been on a proper holiday before, so I'm quite looking forward to it.
16:20Is it what you want me and Sun Bill doing next week, or do you want to do our own
16:23things?
16:24No, I've seen your performance today.
16:25I'm going to let you do whatever you want.
16:27Tremendous.
16:28Just do your own things.
16:28That's a good idea.
16:29That's music to me, is that it?
16:31While Ruben's sunning himself, Capper and Sonny can get on with their own side hustles.
16:37Right, let's get out of here.
16:45With a whole summer of digger work complete, Ruben's long-awaited holiday is within reach.
16:51But first, there's a reward a bit closer to home, with fish and chips over at Brough Castle.
16:58Hi!
16:59Hi!
17:01The fish supper delivery team, aka Nana Diane, Mum Sarah and Big Sister Amelia with baby George, have arrived just
17:09in time.
17:10Because Jess has saved the best till last.
17:13Who recognises this one?
17:14Yeah, I recognise her.
17:16She looks like a Muffin, doesn't she?
17:18Yeah, so this is Muffin's lamb.
17:20Yeah.
17:23Muffin was Jess's childhood pet when she was seven, and quite the character.
17:28She used to work the turnstiles, didn't she?
17:31She was so clever, so intelligent, wasn't she?
17:33Yeah, she was, yeah.
17:34She used to stand and look over the garden wall.
17:36She did!
17:37Yeah, yeah.
17:37I know, she was.
17:38She was so gorgeous, wasn't she?
17:41Right, let's get them done.
17:55That's the one!
17:56Well done!
18:00Well done!
18:01The last one!
18:03Yay!
18:04Well done, Jessica!
18:06Come on, sweetheart!
18:07Well done!
18:08Well done, Jess!
18:10Yeah, done for another year, aren't they?
18:12All that wool makes a handy sofa.
18:15Right, yeah!
18:17Our chair!
18:18Yeah!
18:19The table!
18:19Fish and chips!
18:20Oops!
18:21Come on, let's get them out!
18:24Come on, Rube, come and get some.
18:26That's your sweetie pie.
18:27There you go.
18:29Oh, thank you.
18:31Beautiful, aren't they?
18:32Mmm!
18:33Lovely!
18:33Mmm!
18:36I can remember starting off, well, you did as well, Jessica, we used to jump on the wool bags, didn't
18:40we?
18:40Yeah.
18:41And now we're on to doing different jobs, aren't we?
18:43And Eva's stepped into our role, hasn't she?
18:45Yeah.
18:46Yeah.
18:47Maybe the best is.
18:48Yeah.
18:48And then George will come along and he'll end up in the wool bag, won't he?
18:52And you'll move up to Mark and Eva.
18:55Yeah.
18:55Yeah?
18:56About time.
19:01It's been a good summer, hasn't it?
19:03It's about over now, look at the time and the nights are starting to draw in.
19:06Yeah, it'll soon be winter now.
19:07Time just flies by, doesn't it?
19:08The years just seem to fly by, don't.
19:10Yeah.
19:25Go on, just drop it.
19:27The next morning, Reuben has agreed to one last pre-holiday job.
19:34So, it wants to be strapped on, right, because we've got quite a long way to go, haven't we?
19:37We've got all the way to Bradford to go.
19:39Yeah.
19:39With Dave busy readying the farm for autumn, Reuben has signed up to provide haulage for
19:45some very fluffy cargo.
19:47How many kilos was the last year, Dad?
19:49I don't think I went with you, did I, but you took it?
19:51About 550 kilos last year.
19:53The eight hefty bags of wool clipped from the flock need to be taken to be graded, sorted
19:58and washed, ready to be sold.
20:01Can you remember the price that we got on that?
20:05It'd be about £1.20 fleece.
20:07Not a lot, is it?
20:08No.
20:09No.
20:09Not for all the work it is.
20:11Is it based on weight?
20:12Yeah.
20:13So...
20:13Weight and quality.
20:14This might be, might make a little bit of money, but not a lot.
20:18Yeah.
20:19It'd be interesting to see what actually happens to it.
20:21Yeah.
20:25The journey to Bradford is 100 miles, but the pair's minds aren't really on the job.
20:32So this time, not tomorrow, but the day after, we'll be on an aeroplane, won't we?
20:37We will indeed.
20:38We're looking forward to it.
20:39It'll be nice.
20:40So the temperature today, where we're going, is 30 degrees.
20:44Lovely.
20:44So it's nice and warm.
20:46Oh, it's actually 32 degrees on Monday, 33 on Thursday.
20:51We're going to be cooking.
20:53Two hours later, and the duo have made it to Bradford.
20:58We're just looking for the wool place now.
21:00Somewhere down here, I think.
21:02Yeah, we're not far off now.
21:07In the 19th century, two thirds of England's wool was produced in this corner of West Yorkshire,
21:12and it was known as the wool capital of the UK.
21:16Right.
21:17We're here, darling.
21:18Are you excited?
21:19Yeah.
21:19It's a big building, isn't it?
21:22Two centuries later, and Bradford is still the beating heart of the industry.
21:29There's some bags of wool in here.
21:30Wow, there's a lot of wool.
21:33Since 1950, it's been home to British Wool,
21:36a cooperative that grades and sells wool from the UK to the global textile industry.
21:45So we'll have a look through each bag individually,
21:48and see what types of wool you've got in there, and how it's going to grade out.
21:54Colin oversees the quality grading at the depot,
21:58where they process 3.5 million kilos of wool each year.
22:03We're going to have a look at the staple, which is the cluster of fibres there.
22:08We'll be pulling the staple and checking it for strength, which will determine its onward use.
22:13So what do you think the majority of this wool will go into, Nick?
22:17So some of the finer fleeces you've got would be okay for any kind of bedding.
22:23It's a nice spongy, springy staple, which is ideal. It's got that bounce back.
22:28So the wool that kept the flock snug on the fells could soon be keeping someone warm in bed.
22:37So, getting closer.
22:38Yeah, getting closer to the duvet, isn't it?
22:40Yeah. Still a lot of work to do, yeah.
22:42Yeah.
22:44The wool is now ready for the next stage of the process,
22:47which happens 10 miles up the road at Howarth Scouring Company.
22:53With 350 fleeces to transform, Ruben and Jess are keen to see exactly how wool becomes duvet ready.
23:02So what actually is the scouring process?
23:05It'd be a load easier if I took you and showed you.
23:07Brilliant.
23:07Come on, follow me.
23:10Managing Director Richard is the man with all the answers.
23:16These here are yours.
23:17Yeah.
23:18And we're going to wash it here for you.
23:19Now, do you fancy having a go at loading?
23:22Yeah, I'll have a go.
23:23Have a go.
23:24As a fully qualified forklift driver, Ruben jumps at the chance to put his evolving skill set to use.
23:31Handrakes off into forwards.
23:39This is a very quiet forklift.
23:41Yeah, I was thinking that.
23:42Fancy, doesn't it?
23:44It's going to get us off the job.
23:47Are we not putting it in the middle of the belt then, or are we just putting it on one
23:49side?
23:49Where would you like it?
23:51It's fine, strap it down.
23:53That's it, just rest it there.
23:55Yeah.
23:56Perfect.
23:57Just gently, just gently release it.
24:01Oh.
24:02Hey, you see, you've got the bag stuck underneath, you see.
24:04The professionals here won't get the bag stuck.
24:06It's my first day.
24:08This is trickier than it looks.
24:10Imagine your wool had enough to be scoured.
24:12Yeah.
24:16The picker machine uses spinning rows of sharp metal teeth to separate the wool fibres.
24:22And after it's been broken apart, the next stage is a proper good wash.
24:28It's starting to smell a bit more like sheep.
24:30Yeah.
24:30Oh, it's... It's... It's... It's something I'm going to smell a sheep.
24:32Ha ha ha.
24:47Ruben's upcoming trip abroad has given Kappa and Sonny the perfect window to crack on with their side hustles.
24:57What are you doing here? How's it going?
24:59Come to see my mate Kappa, my mechanical friend.
25:02Art or in?
25:03Yeah.
25:04What have you brought me?
25:05Well, there's two items.
25:06Are you unique?
25:07That doesn't surprise me.
25:09Everything you buy is unique.
25:13Sonny has bought, fixed and flipped all sorts of machinery since he was a child.
25:19But this is out there even for Sonny.
25:22What on earth?
25:26What on earth, Sonny?
25:29Sweep, one and two. One for me, one for you.
25:34So the real question is, why on earth have you bought them?
25:37Well, I've bought them to sell.
25:39Right.
25:39I'll give fifteen and a quid for a turn.
25:41You'll give fifteen and a quid for them?
25:43Yeah, they'll be worth that each if they're running.
25:45Really?
25:45Yeah.
25:45Who's going to buy them?
25:48To be honest, Sonny, I'm actually lost for words for once.
25:52Like all the gang, Kappa is a dab hand at getting tractors up and running, but road sweepers
25:57might be a first.
26:00Get a cab tipped up.
26:01Get it stripped off.
26:02Yeah.
26:06Dear, dear Sonny.
26:07I think Sonny is the first man I've ever known in the whole 19 years of my life to buy
26:12two road sweepers and try and make money out of them.
26:16I know you're feeling strong.
26:18Ready?
26:18Yeah.
26:22Look at that.
26:24Challenge number one.
26:25Will the engine start?
26:27Turn it on first.
26:29Oh.
26:31Shows a sign of life.
26:33Click him.
26:42That doesn't sound like a healthy engine to me.
26:44Because the cab's tilted up or something?
26:47All right, stick your cab down.
26:50Ah!
26:56Wait.
26:58Told you it ran.
27:00Drive balls a bit.
27:05Back up a bit.
27:10So it starts and moves, but there's one vital function that remains a mystery.
27:15I don't know how to make it sweep.
27:18Do you reckon we should try the other one?
27:20Yeah.
27:22While they make a plan of attack for sweeper number two...
27:28Over in Bradford, Ruben and Jess are at the business end of wool scouring.
27:37So this is your wool?
27:38This is our wool coming, Fred.
27:40So it travels into the washbowls here.
27:42These are baths of hot water.
27:43Yeah.
27:44And we push it under the water and move it forward down the washbowl.
27:48The raw wool travels through eight bowls of steaming water before it's finally clean.
27:54You can see every time I walk down, it's getting lighter, isn't it, lighter?
27:58So this is your final bowl.
28:01Right, wow.
28:01Last bowl, and then into the dryers.
28:05Like I was thinking before, like, how little the farmers get for the wool and how much a jumper is.
28:10Well, there's a lot of work, isn't there?
28:13Yeah, there is.
28:14There is really a lot of work.
28:15I guess it just takes a lot of people making a little bit to get the job done.
28:22After a spin in the world's biggest tumble dryer, the wool is ready to be packed.
28:27Is this going to be wool avalanche?
28:29Yes, it could be a bit of a wool avalanche.
28:31Oh, my.
28:32There you go.
28:34So our wool is somewhere in amongst that.
28:37What would you grade the fluffiness?
28:39Ten out of ten fluffiness.
28:41Finally, the clean wool is pressed and baled.
28:46There you are, Jess.
28:47That's your eight bags of wool turned into one bale of scoured wool.
28:51That was an amazing process to see what we turned up with for what it is now.
28:56Well, that's 500 kilos of the 22 million that we're going to do this year.
29:01Wow.
29:01So you guys can shift wool.
29:04We shift wool.
29:05Soon, Jess's wool will be spun into a flock of toasty duvets.
29:10Not that these two will need one where they're going.
29:14Let's get this weight and into our stock system so I can invoice you.
29:17Yes, thank you.
29:18With the last summer task ticked off, they can finally head home and pack for Cyprus.
29:35While Reuben and Jess are off on their hard-earned holiday...
29:42..back in the Dales...
29:44This is an exciting day, isn't it?
29:47..farm life rolls on.
29:48And one job simply couldn't wait for Jess to return.
29:56It's a shame Jess isn't here, though, isn't it, really?
29:59She would have loved to...
30:01Yeah, yeah, I like them.
30:02She likes things like this, don't she?
30:05Dave has seized the opportunity to buy a new bull,
30:08who's on his way to be introduced to Jess's favourite herd of young heifers.
30:14He's had calves already, this bull.
30:16Oh, has he?
30:16So, and he said that they were really good calves.
30:19Oh, good, yeah.
30:20That's probably one of the most important things, isn't it,
30:22that he's got to be easy-carving and quiet.
30:24We don't want anything nuts.
30:25Don't want anything nasty again, do we?
30:27No, definitely not.
30:29Dave has good reason to be cautious with a new bull
30:32after a frightening accident 15 years ago.
30:37He ran me into some girders, didn't he?
30:39And threw me about a bit, and, yeah, he made a mess of us, didn't he?
30:45Yeah.
30:45How long were you in intensive care for?
30:47A couple of days, wasn't I?
30:48Yeah.
30:49I went in the air ambulance to Middlesbrough.
30:52They found I had, what was it, nine broken ribs,
30:55and a ruptured spleen.
30:57Yeah, they'd done a lot of damage, hadn't they, internally?
30:59Yeah, he'd made a good job.
31:01I think when you work with these animals every day,
31:03sometimes you forget how dangerous it can be.
31:08Thankfully, this new bull seems like a pretty chilled young chap.
31:15There's the ladies.
31:16There they are.
31:17Oh, look at them.
31:18They're all waiting.
31:21The heifers have formed quite the welcoming committee.
31:27You've got it.
31:27Come on, you let him out.
31:32Are you ready?
31:33Stunt it side, eh?
31:34Yeah.
31:36Here we go.
31:37Here we go.
31:38They're all excited.
31:40Come on, son.
31:41There you go.
31:45Oh, he's lovely, isn't he?
31:46Oh, yeah.
31:47Lovely.
31:49Straight in.
31:51Now, I hope Jess will be impressed with him.
31:53Yeah, I'm sure she'll like him.
31:54Yeah, well, you'll have to keep it quiet now, won't we, until she gets back, yeah.
31:59Try not to let it out of the bag.
32:00Yeah.
32:01Oh.
32:02Straight to work.
32:04There we go.
32:05No time to lose.
32:06He's obviously going to earn his keep, isn't he?
32:09With the young bull an instant hit with the ladies, Dave and Amelia have high hopes.
32:15Well, it's a good start, isn't it?
32:17Hopefully in nine months' time.
32:19Yeah, we'll have some little short arms.
32:21We will.
32:22Hopefully, Jess will approve of her post-holiday surprise.
32:34Over in Kappa's yard, buoyed by their progress on the sweepers, Sonny decides it's time for
32:40a long-distance call to the boss.
32:42Hello.
32:43How's it going, mate?
32:44You all right?
32:45Yeah, good, thank you.
32:46How are you?
32:47Yeah, I'm good.
32:47What are you sat on?
32:48I'm on a donut.
32:49I'm on a donut, but I'm still on a donut.
32:52I bet you're missing the digging.
32:54Yeah, he's already dug two sandcastles small in a trench.
32:59What are you guys on with?
33:01Messing around with road sweepers.
33:03Road sweepers?
33:04Yeah, I'll show you in a minute.
33:06Is it a business venture you're on with, or just, oh, you've got two of them?
33:11Yeah.
33:12We've got that one going.
33:14Oh, good.
33:16That doesn't sweep, though.
33:18You've got a sweeper that doesn't sweep?
33:20Yeah, but he does everything else.
33:21Yeah, anyway, I'll not be wrong with follow-back.
33:24We're missing you.
33:26No, book another week if you want.
33:27See you later, buddy.
33:28Catch you.
33:29Enjoy yourself.
33:29See you later, mate.
33:31Looks like you seem to have a good time, doesn't it?
33:33Yeah, it does.
33:33It looks like he's enjoying yourself.
33:34A little bit jealous.
33:36Putting their holiday envy to one side, it's back on with sweeper number two.
33:42Aha!
33:44Battery.
33:45Found the battery.
33:48But it's impossible to get to.
33:50Where's that down back?
33:52I think we just go straight to the starter, personally.
33:54Who on earth would put a battery there?
33:56With no access to the battery, Kappa clips the booster pack to the starter motor instead.
34:02Look at that.
34:03Jump in.
34:04Fire up.
34:05Look at this.
34:06Look at how simple that was.
34:07Am I a genius?
34:08Am I a genius?
34:12Goodbye!
34:17Sortied.
34:19Sortied?
34:19Yeah.
34:22Both sweepers are up and running, but the big question is, what on earth are they going
34:27to do with them?
34:40Deep in the tranquil Yorkshire Dales, it's quiet and peaceful.
34:50But Sonny and Kappa's plan for their revived road sweepers is about to change all that.
35:00The boys have decided a race across Kappa's home turf is the best way to test out the engines
35:09fully.
35:11Right, so, are you ready?
35:13Right, so, first one's at the top.
35:15Three, two, one.
35:17One, two, one, two, two.
35:17One, one, two, three, one.
35:18One, two, one, two, three.
35:20One, two, one.
35:23Two, one, two, three.
35:26His brushes still won't spin, but no matter, Sonny takes an early lead.
35:31I'm gonna take you on the inside oh wow I can't go any faster that's all I've got
35:40in the lead I'm doing all right
35:44for an absolute machine this has got to be one of my favorite bikes so far rest
35:51assured it's not a public road and with top speeds of 20 miles per hour it's not
35:55exactly formula one so he's a long way ahead he catching up with Kappa lagging
36:04behind doesn't like the hills Sonny does the decent thing and wait here he is
36:11eventually about time where have you been and off they go again with Kappa in pole
36:19position for now I'm gonna smash him down here I'm gonna get a proper overtake
36:24oh he's going to overtake me
36:32ah leave for one of the day coming in for the win here
36:39right come on come on lass you can do it come on
36:42I'll throw down I'll give him a chance on this next
36:47but there's little chance of that happening
36:49go on go on right to the top go on get up get up go on you can do it
36:55you can do it
36:57no you can Sonny it won't get up the hill looks like we might have to pull a road sweeper
37:06out of our road sweeper
37:08getting Kappa out of scrapes is becoming Sonny's speciality
37:13Sonny to the rescue once again
37:18I'm stuck you're stuck you're stuck as well get launchable stuck get myself stuck get road sweeper stuck on my
37:29old way
37:30I got a strap don't worry
37:31get a strap
37:34with one sweeper off the road Sonny's got some serious work to do before this pair of machines
37:40are ready to sell I'm just gonna pull you right to the finish line oh cheers cheers
37:49cheers
37:50ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha what an absolute machine this
37:54is
37:57and as the sweepers disappear down the track it's safe to assume Sonny will be claiming race victory
38:03and I'm gonna stick to tractors
38:05and pickups
38:14I'm gonna stick to tractors
38:23A few days later, Ruben and Jess are home from their holiday.
38:28Oh, I'm glad to be back.
38:29Yeah, same. We're ages.
38:31It's been a lovely time. I've absolutely loved it.
38:32I have as well. Can't wait to see everyone, though.
38:34Sure, looks like they've finished milking.
38:36Yeah.
38:37Right, back in.
38:39He's got our suitcases.
38:41Oh, yeah.
38:45Oh, good morning, all right?
38:47Oh, hello.
38:48Hi.
38:49How's it going?
38:50Oh, yeah.
38:51Oh, nice to see you guys.
38:54You've had a good time?
38:55Yeah, it's been good.
38:55Very warm.
38:56Nice and warm.
38:57Warm and warm.
38:58You look round.
38:59Yeah.
39:00Oh, bless you. I'm so pleased you've come back relaxed.
39:03With Jess back, Dave wants to reveal their surprise bull.
39:06All he needs is a crafty ruse.
39:10Right, well, I've got to go upstairs, man, because the heifers have got out again.
39:15Oh.
39:16So I'll have to go and get them back in again.
39:18All right, I'll come and give you a hand.
39:19So if I get dinner ready while you lot have gone...
39:23Well, I will go and get changed.
39:25Well, he's back out.
39:26Yeah.
39:27See you soon.
39:28See you in a minute.
39:28See you in a minute.
39:29So far, so good.
39:36Have I missed anything since I've been away?
39:39No, no, no.
39:40No, not really.
39:41No, it's all been quiet.
39:42Everything's same?
39:43Nothing's changed?
39:44I've missed the smell of the farm.
39:47You come back, you're like, yeah, back home.
39:53As they near the pasture, is Dave's ploy about to be rumbled?
39:58So I don't look like they need to stay.
40:00They must have come back in.
40:02I wonder if the neighbours sorted them out.
40:05I don't know how to get a bull sorted out, though.
40:07I don't know how to get a bull.
40:08Yeah.
40:08They need a bull in.
40:10It's going to be too big if we don't get a bull.
40:17You're going to shout them over, Jess?
40:19Come on!
40:21Come on!
40:23Oh, they're running.
40:24Oh, wow.
40:25Look happy to see you, yeah?
40:27As the herd comes into view, the well-kept secret is finally revealed.
40:32It's got a ring in its nose.
40:33It's a bull.
40:34Huh?
40:35There's a bull in there.
40:37Is there?
40:37Yeah.
40:38This bull's got him.
40:39It's our bull.
40:42What?
40:43It's our bull.
40:43What?
40:44What, have you got a bull?
40:45Yeah.
40:45What?
40:47You didn't tell me.
40:50When did you get him?
40:51What's wrong?
40:52They've never escaped.
40:53No.
40:55We just said that to get you up here.
40:57Oh, right.
41:02With Dad's day, I spot a new bull, and I've been away on holiday, which was a bit of a
41:06shock.
41:06But it was a nice shock.
41:07A bit of a shame I wasn't there to bite it, but they've made a good decision.
41:10It's a nice bull.
41:12I mean, I was laid in a sunbed, so I can't really say anything.
41:16I literally said on the way here, we need to get a buck.
41:18Yeah, you did.
41:19How did you keep a straight pace?
41:21She didn't.
41:22You were just as fast as behind you.
41:23You've been looking the other way.
41:27And with the bull awarded Jess's seal of approval, they head back for a farmhouse feast.
41:37This is a lovely spread.
41:39Thank you very much.
41:40Thank you very much.
41:40Welcome.
41:41Did you have a nice holiday then?
41:43Lovely, wasn't it, Rames?
41:44It was really nice, yeah.
41:46You've got some pictures printed off in the airport.
41:48Oh, I did, yeah.
41:49You pack them around then, and then we can have a look.
41:51Yeah, so that's taken off our balcony, that photo.
41:54So the sea was just there.
41:55Literally, just there.
41:56We're so lucky.
41:57Mmm.
41:58Yeah.
41:58What a beautiful photo.
42:00Look at that one.
42:01Isn't that beautiful?
42:02Gorgeous.
42:03Yeah.
42:06So what did you think at Bull Jess?
42:07Yeah, it was nice.
42:08It was really nice.
42:09Bit of a shock.
42:10We've done our job right, have we?
42:11Yeah.
42:12No, you picked a good one.
42:15This family are full of surprises, and Jess has been plotting one of her own.
42:20So, Nana, this is yours.
42:22We got me and Ruben.
42:24Yeah, me and Ruben got you a little present.
42:25Oh.
42:27Really?
42:28Yeah.
42:29Oh, I didn't expect this at all.
42:33Something nasty, is it?
42:35No, no.
42:36Maybe Nana Diane needs a clue.
42:39In theory, you've seen it before.
42:41Yeah.
42:42Really?
42:43Maybe I've even touched it before.
42:45For a mattress?
42:46So it's a duvet.
42:47A duvet?
42:47It's made out of our wool.
42:49Really?
42:50Yeah.
42:51Wow.
42:52Yeah.
42:52Oh, that's a lovely present.
42:53Wow.
42:54Yeah.
42:55Yeah, it's quite cool.
42:56And our wool?
42:56Yeah.
42:57Oh.
42:57Oh, keep your nice and cozy, Nana.
43:00Yeah, so it's coming winter now, isn't it?
43:02Oh, bless you.
43:04When we took the wool down to Bradford, we saw it graded and then cleaned right to where
43:12it then goes into them, so we've seen it right through.
43:16Not many farmers will have seen that process, I don't think.
43:20A new duvet for her Nana, made from the family's own wool, it doesn't get more personal
43:26than that.
43:27It's just so special, Jessica, to think that that's for our own sheep.
43:31Yeah, it's nice.
43:32Yeah.
43:32It's almost too nice to use, isn't it?
43:35Yeah.
43:35Too special to use.
43:36Brings it closer, doesn't it, to home.
43:38That's right, yes.
43:39Yeah.
43:39Very, very special.
43:41From Yao to you.
43:45No problem at all.
43:47But it's warm, though.
43:48Warn't it?
43:49Yeah.
43:54Next time, Ruben plans to try to break rock without dynamite.
43:59See what happens.
44:00Something's going to happen.
44:03The team's latest bit of kit proves a big surprise for Kappa.
44:10Look at me, my corn man.
44:12I'm a heart attack.
44:14And the gang pulled together to make a bonfire night to remember.
44:20Happy bonfire night.
