The European Union says it does not believe now is the time to ease pressure on Russia. EU Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis made the comments at a G7 meeting after the United States announced an extension of a sanctions waiver allowing “energy-vulnerable” countries affected by the Iran war to buy Russian oil.

00:05The bloc's Commissioner for Economy, Valdez Dombrovskis, made these comments at a G7 meeting
00:11after the U.S. announced an extension to a sanctions waiver
00:15allowing energy-vulnerable countries hit by the Iran war to buy Russian oil.
00:23Dombrovskis said that U.S. Treasury's Scott Besson had reassured its partner at the meeting
00:28that the U.S. waiver, issued for a further 30 days,
00:32allowing countries to buy sanctioned Russian oil at sea, will be temporary.
00:36Secretary Besson informed us about this decision.
00:41Well, from an EU point of view, we do not think that this is a time to ease pressure on
00:47Russia.
00:48In fact, Russia is the one which is gaining from the war in Iran and increase in fossil fuel prices.
00:58Correspondingly, if anything, we would need to strengthen the pressure.
01:02Secretary Besson was reassuring that this is a temporary measure,
01:06but we know that it's already a second extension of the measure,
