Steel plant in Misamis Oriental seen as part of bigger web of illegal foreign activities

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on May 18, 2026 says it is looking into the possibility that the illegal steel manufacturing plant in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental where 69 Chinese and one Filipino were nabbed could be part of a bigger web of unlawful foreign activities in the country.

00:01First and foremost, I would like to state that the AFP and D&D provided support operations to the law
00:10enforcement operations conducted in Taguloan.
00:13The main effort were our law enforcement agencies and we provided support to them. That was the role of the
00:18AFP.
00:19As to the possibility that this could be part of a bigger web, we have to step back and look
00:27at it from a macro level.
00:29In the past, may nahuli tayo ng mga Chinese nationals with fake identities who were trying to pose off as
00:39Filipinos.
00:40We have apprehended alleged spies who were conducting mapping operations who had equipment that were authorized to be with them.
00:49Plus all other incidents of foreign nationals, mainly suspected to be Chinese, operating in-country.
00:57This could be another similar activity which we are trying to check if this is part of foreign interference malign
01:06influence operations.
01:08Considering that, Chinese nationals were involved. Filipinos were part of the labor force.
01:16And this could be part of the United Front works, for all we know. That's what we are checking us
01:21at now.
01:22Kasi may sariling port, di ba? So, walang private port.
01:25Yes. And if it is difficult to regulate by the different government agencies, this will raise a lot of questions.
01:31Hence, our SND mentioned that we support the inter-agency government effort to look into this Taguloan case.
01:38Do you think related din ito dun sa ginagawang naval facility malapit?
01:44It remains to be seen considering that the activity, the alleged steel factory that has been producing substandard qualities of
01:53the products has been there even before.
01:55News came out that this could be a possible Philippine Navy base.
01:59Pwede ba yun, sir? Parang, by producing substandard steel, nagkakaroon ka na ng parang destabilization?
02:07Again, we have to look at if it may macro level, the SND mentioned, if there is an angle of
02:13economic sabotage, if there is an angle of the environment, of labor, it becomes a national security issue.
02:23So, are we ready to substantiate our claims?
02:26Meron naman tayong evidence na nakastandby in case the Chinese government or the Chinese embassy would be ready?
02:31Again, we would like to defer to the appropriate law enforcement agencies that are handling the case.
02:36We are providing, we are having a support role in this particular issue.
02:52Pwede ba yun, sir?
02:55Pwede ba yun, sir?
02:58Pwede ba yun, sir?
03:07Pwede ba yun.
