00:00In a first, Japan's military is reportedly joining U.S. Marines for joint exercises on Japanese islands near Taiwan.
00:08Local newspaper Rukio Shinpo says troops established a joint command post on Miyako Island in southwestern Okinawa.
00:16The report says follow-up exercises will include logistics drills on nearby Ishigaki Island and reconnaissance drills using drones on
00:24Yonaguni Island.
00:25They come less than a month after Japan for the first time officially joined Balikatan, the joint U.S.-Philippine drills.
00:33During those exercises, U.S. commanders called for closer integration with regional allies like Japan.
