00:00Japan's Defense Ministry says it plans to deploy surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni Island by 2030.
00:06Yonaguni is Japan's westernmost island and lies just over 100 kilometers from Taiwan's east coast.
00:12The announcement comes amid tense Japan-China relations,
00:15since Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae said Tokyo could mobilize its military
00:20in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
00:24For more on what this announcement means, our reporter Larry Isianos worked with Tsai Xing-sun,
00:29a professor at Tamkong University.
00:32What do you think this decision to place missiles on Yonaguni Island says about the state of Japan-China relations?
01:24We just saw Prime Minister Takaichi
01:29Takaichi Sanae won a landslide victory in this month's SNAP elections.
01:32But what do you think the average Japanese person feels about these sorts of developments?
01:36Things like missile deployments, increasing security cooperation, increasing defense spending?
02:25In the future, do you anticipate further security cooperation between Japan and Taiwan,
02:29Or do you think Japan will choose to focus on the Philippines and the U.S. as main allies instead?
