The untold story of Anarcha Westcott — the woman behind modern gynecology.
At just 17 years old, Anarcha Westcott was an enslaved woman who endured 30 experimental surgeries without anesthesia. Dr. J. Marion Sims performed these procedures on her to develop surgical techniques that would become the foundation of modern gynecology.
Two other enslaved women — Lucy and Betsey — endured the same experiments. Today, all three are recognized as the mothers of gynecology.
For over a century, only the doctor received credit. It is time the world learned their names.
