Tasmania's Anglican church says its estimated liability for historical child sexual abuse could climb to 80-million-dollars over the next 15 years. It's now looking at how to shift its assets to fund the redress.

00:03Grappling to divine compensation for victim survivors of historical child sexual abuse.
00:09At the moment we don't know how we're going to do that, it's a huge amount of money.
00:13Tasmania's Anglican Church has announced its liability could climb to $80 million to be paid over the next 15 years.
00:22We've paid out $20 million up to now and that's another $60 million that we've got to find.
00:28We've got plans for the next couple of years but we really don't know how we're going to find that
00:33amount of money.
00:34The church says a working group is looking at how it can fund its redress obligations, which may require a
00:40shift in parish structure.
00:42There's no threat to the Anglican Church being here for the long term, but the shape of our ministry may
00:49be very different.
00:50In 2018 the church faced backlash for selling 73 of its churches and other properties to fund redress.
00:57It says it's now considering more far reaching options.
01:01Really everything is on the table for us, all of our assets, so that we can raise that amount of
01:07money.
01:07It's a huge job for us.
01:09Survivors and advocates say they're not surprised by the increased liability estimate.
01:14They've welcomed new laws which aim to make it easier for people to sue churches for abuse committed by priests
01:20and other religious leaders.
01:22Once this black hole is filled by the retrospective legislation, it will be one less discounting factor for survivors.
01:32So I think we'll see survivors in some cases getting better settlements.
