00:00Could Britain undo Brexit?
00:02Here's why the revolt against Keir Starmer is reopening one of the most divisive questions in British politics.
00:09It's nearly a decade since the UK voted to leave the EU, 52 to 48%.
00:13That decision has reverberated through British politics ever since.
00:18And the power struggle within Labour has brought the question back to the top of the political agenda.
00:23Starmer has pledged to forge closer links with the EU,
00:26but has set returning to the customs union, single market and freedom of movement as red lines.
00:32Starmer's two main challengers, Andy Burnham and Wes Streeting, have both discussed rejoining the EU.
00:37After resigning as health secretary with a scathing attack on the prime minister,
00:41Streeting called Brexit a catastrophic mistake.
00:45While he didn't launch a formal leadership challenge, he said he'd stand in any contest,
00:50suggesting he'd focus on a push to reverse Brexit.
00:53While not as forceful, Andy Burnham has also said there's a case for rejoining the EU.
00:58Seen as by far the greatest threat to Starmer,
01:01Andy Burnham is lining up a return to Westminster with a leadership bid in mind.
01:05First, though, he has to win a by-election in Makerfield,
01:09where Nigel Farage's pro-Brexit, anti-immigration reform party came second in the 2024 election.
01:15Reopening the debate on the EU could well scupper Burnham's pitch to local voters.
01:20The 2029 general election will be a battle with arch-Brexiteer Nigel Farage.
01:25If either Burnham or Streeting succeed in toppling Starmer,
01:30Labour could focus on rejoining the EU in a direct challenge to reform.
