00:05On Ask This Old House, our experts travel across the country to answer questions about your house.
00:18Today, when a homeowner wants to add storage to their bathroom, Nathan steps in to give it a
00:24facelift. This changed the game. It looks so good. Then, the crew gets together for a round of
00:31What Is It? Oh, now they're coming. And Morrow helps a homeowner patch a textured ceiling.
00:39Stretch it down a little more. On Ask This Old House.
00:53Hi, Nathan. Welcome. Hi, Jenna. Nice to meet you. So nice to meet you. I'm so excited you're here.
00:58Beautiful home you have here. Thank you so much. We've updated some things in the kitchen and the
01:03living room, but what I'm going to show you today is our bathroom. Okay, Nathan, welcome to my bathroom
01:09Stuck in the 1960s. Hater it is. So we're not ready for a full remodel, but I am eager to
01:16get
01:17these ceramic tiles off. Okay. I think these used to hold things like bar soap. Bar soap holder.
01:24Toothbrush holder. Yes. But now, you know, we use electric toothbrushes. I prefer liquid soap.
01:29And this vanity is smaller, so it starts to get cluttered. So my dream would be to somehow get
01:36these off and add a shelf or something in this area. Definitely. Yeah, we can do that. Amazing.
01:41So remove the toothbrush holder, the bar soap holder. I think it looks like we might have to
01:46remove this towel bar here, right? Nice wooden shelf, plenty of storage on it, a little organizer
01:51underneath. To get started, let's remove these to see what kind of space we need to cover with that
01:57wooden shelf. Okay. I'll get some tools and we'll get started. Awesome. Can't wait.
02:04Looks great. Good to go. We are ready to go. So I'm going to attempt to take these off in
02:09one piece,
02:09but first we have to play a guessing game, right? So there's a few different ways that these could
02:12have been installed. It could have been a little bit of mortar on the back applied and then grouted
02:16around. It could have been a tile on the back of it, like a four and a quarter by four
02:20and a quarter
02:21profile. That way it kind of works into the layout. Again, mortared and then grouted. Or it could be
02:27like a cavity on the backside and a cavity in the wall and they stuffed some newspaper in there and
02:31kind of just made everything bond. I think it's the second one. I think it has like a tile on
02:35the
02:35back of it. To get these off, I'm going to use a scoring tool. It has a really sharp carbide
02:40tip on it
02:40and I'm going to try and ease out all the grout all the way around it, get a pry bar
02:45in there and pop
02:46it off in one piece. All right. So as we thought, kind of the tile profile, four and a quarter
02:54by four
02:55and a quarter. Essentially, it's on the back of this toothbrush holder. Looks like they said it was
02:58some mastic back in the day, which is pretty common. All right. While we're here, I'm going
03:02to remove some of this old adhesive with a sharp chisel. All right, Jenna, you want to do the next
03:13one? Yeah, let's do it. All right, here we go. So a lot of control, nice, easy scoring, pull towards
03:18you and just work your way all the way around. Okay. Nice. You can see those big pieces fall
03:25right out. Excellent. And when do I know like, okay, that side's good. I can stop scraping. I think
03:32when you pull and you don't feel any resistance. Okay. That sounds good. All right, let me grab
03:38that hammer and pry bar. You stand here, we'll switch places and you can pop it off. So again,
03:44control is the most important thing. So we're going to set this pry bar right here on that corner. So
03:49you have a little bit of room to swing over the towel bar and just light, gentle taps. I'll hold
03:54this if you want to swing. And the point of being like gentle is so it doesn't crack? I just
03:59don't
03:59want to smash it. Okay. I can't resell it if I break it. Yeah. One more. All right, I'm going
04:08to give a
04:08little pry. Oh, there it is. All right, here, you take over. Okay. I'll take that. Pry it off. And
04:16when
04:16I pry it, I should pull this towards me, right? Perfect. Like a glove. Nice. All right. So now we'll
04:21get the sharp chisel and we'll clean up all that, that mastic that's left behind.
04:33All right, let's jump over here and same process. Okay, great.
04:54Woo. That was great. All right. So we get our demo done. Now we can start talking about that new
04:59shelf. Okay, great. So you have a 24 inch vanity below. So I always like to work off a center
05:03line.
05:04Just holding this up 16 inch on the center line. I'll cover all three holes if I make a shelf
05:11that's
05:1132 inches wide. Okay. I think that'll be nice. Lots of storage. And then you have a little bit of
05:18a
05:18void that's four and a quarter tall. So if I made a five inch shelf, we'll cover everything across.
05:2532 inches wide. I see some gold accents around the room. Amazing. Try and introduce some of that.
05:31That'd be great. Then I'll find something to cover up that hole. Okay. And you'll be good to go.
05:36I'm so excited to see this. This is awesome. All right. I'm going to go make a shelf real quick.
05:39Okay, great. All right. Here it is. It is perfect. I love it. I'm glad you like it. So we
05:47have a
05:47quarter sawn white oak. Okay. With a warm satin finish. Some of those nice gold brackets and a little
05:54jewelry organizer here on the bottom. Amazing. Some pre-drilled holes for when we mount it.
05:58So we're going to get it into place. Okay. And we need to do a layout first. You know,
06:02we want to put it about there to cover those three holes. Yeah. But we still kind of want to
06:06work off
06:07of the center line. Okay. So let's get some painter's tape on the wall so we don't lose any
06:11of our marks. And let's do a layout. Let me throw one more just a little bit above.
06:18Okay. And what is this to do? This is just going to help with our layout. So we're writing on
06:23tile,
06:24which doesn't really want to take pencil very well. And I don't want to do it. I don't want to
06:27do it
06:28on with ink on the tile if we're not going to be drilling it out. Okay. So we have our
06:3324 inch vanity,
06:34right? 24. So we have 12 inches. I can make just a little tiny mark down here. Then I want
06:48to transfer
06:49that up. All right. So we have a 32 inch top. So we'll do a little mark, 16 inches in
06:55for our center.
06:56All right. So we can bring our piece up, match up our center lines. But one thing I'm picking up
07:01on is
07:01it looks like we have a little bit of a hump in the wall, which is, it happens in every
07:05house.
07:06So when I fasten, I'll probably split the difference, go equal, equal, instead of pulling one side tight
07:11or the other side tight. So we'll just split the difference on that. I think the last thing I want
07:15to do is also, I'm going to do, I'm going to do a line for a height because we have
07:21this old grout line
07:22here. And I'd probably want to be just a little bit above it. So that way we don't land on
07:27it. And then
07:28you have like a little groove behind. Oh, smart. So to level it, we're going to use a torpedo level.
07:33Okay. That looks nice and level right there.
07:39Still above it? Mm-hmm. All right. That'll be the top of our shelf.
07:43Now that we have center line, we have a top line, and I need you to hold it.
07:49And you're going to kind of be watching the top, okay? Okay.
07:51So we're going to use this marker that has a very long end to it that we can reach into
07:56that hole and transfer our layout. There's our two dots. That's where we need to put our anchors.
08:02And typically when you think of an anchor like this, you think of it like spreading on the
08:05backside of the drywall. Yeah. But in this case, you're going through tile and you're going through
08:10drywall. So it's not really going to like wing out like that. It's more just going to expand a little
08:14bit and fill up the void and allow somewhere for the screw to fasten into.
08:19This is a carbide tip, some are diamond tipped, and it's good to go with a masonry.
08:22Uh-huh. If you used a wood drill bit, you'd have a hard time getting through this glazing
08:27that's on top of the ceramic tile. So some guys used to take a nail and like kind of chip
08:31that
08:31away. But anytime you drill through tile, you run the risk of breaking it. All right. Let's see how we
08:37did. So what we're looking for now is that no tile cracked? No tile cracked and a nice, nice clean
08:43hole.
08:44All right. Well done. Now we're ready to put our anchors in. So why do we use anchors? So the
08:50anchor helps us
08:51put a fastener where we want it. So you probably have a stud here or here, but that's really not
08:56really going to work because our shelf comes to here. There's a bracket here. I don't know if I can
09:00hit a stud. And we probably have a stud maybe around here somewhere. So it's like we using a shield
09:07that allows us to put the fastener exactly where we want. Okay. So we're going to put this in
09:13and then we're going to tap it until it's seated. So that one's good.
09:23All right. We're almost ready to mount our shelf. So let's talk fasteners. So I picked up these number
09:2810 brass screws. They're two and a half inches long and that'll be nice because we have to pass
09:33through the oak shelf into our anchor. All right. Last thing I want to do is just adjust these screws
09:43just a little bit, just to make sure that they're kind of aesthetically pleasing and they're all clocked
09:49in the same direction. That's great. I would have never thought to do that. It makes a difference.
09:53Those look good. All right. Now we need to address that towel bar. I picked up one of these hooks
09:57I was
09:57planning on putting here, but that's not going to work out. So what do you think if I introduced a
10:03second one? I made a really nice quarter sawn white oak board and we mounted it the same way
10:08that we mounted the shelf. I mounted the hooks onto that and then mount that to the wall.
10:12And we'll hide that hole and you'll have some good usable hooks. That is a great idea. I love it.
10:17All right. I'm gonna go make that. Great.
10:33You are quite the decorator. Nathan, this came out amazing. I can't thank you enough. I absolutely love
10:39it. I'm glad you like it. And look, I can now keep my toothbrush right there by wanting to ask
10:44you
10:44because I don't want to ruin it. Is this water resistant? Can I put things on there that might be
10:49wet? Everything's sealed up, water resistant. You can even spray a cleaner on it, wipe it down,
10:53no problem. Amazing. And I love how the towel holder over here came out. It looks so good.
10:58Lots of usable space. This changed the game. Thank you so much. You are welcome. And listen,
11:04I wanted to ask you because now I'm inspired with the gold. Yeah. I have to update this faucet. Do
11:08you know anyone? I know a guy. Perfect. I'll call him on the way home. Thank you so much. All
11:12right.
11:12Take care. Bye Nathan. Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you again. Nice to meet you too. Thanks for
11:15writing in.
11:15Thank you. All right. I use the term loosely, but gentlemen, here's a piece of metal that's bent
11:32at a 45 degree angle on one side with a point and a 90 degree angle on the other end.
11:39It's metal,
11:40about a half an inch wide. What is it? Me? Can I go? Can I go? Go ahead, Kev. Absolutely.
11:46A hundred percent. I know what this is. It's a come along. A hundred percent? A come along?
11:49You know what a come along? I know that's not a come along. Oh, this is a come along. So
11:52we've all
11:53got kids, right? And something happens to them when they become teenagers. You'll find out. Anyway,
11:57they never listen to you. They roll their eyes. You're like, come on, let's go. Oh, dad. So this,
12:02now they're coming. Now they're going to come with you. Come on, let's go get in the car. And then,
12:06you know, when you got to take your family photo and like smile. I think that would work,
12:11but it's not what it is. That's not what it is. Okay. I've got to really say tools have come
12:16a long
12:16way, but that's not what that is. You see my fingers, how damaged they are? What's up with the
12:24tape? That's actually not purple tape. That's blood blisters from all the years of construction,
12:30but no more will I have that problem because now if I miss when I'm hammering, completely protect it.
12:36So you get two or three or seven of these and you're good to go. That's what that's for.
12:39All right. Well, that works, but I love nuts. I mean, I don't know if everybody knew that or not,
12:44but I do. I love almonds. I love walnuts. I love pistachios. Pistachios are better for you.
12:50Yeah. I know, right? In the shell, right? Yeah. That's why I need this. Boom. My pistachio.
12:56That's not it. Nice try. Nice try. That's not it. All right. Well, you guys probably would have got it,
13:01but I did. I have a surprise. I left out one little part. Got it right here. We would have
13:06got it.
13:06Yeah. Oh, that changes everything. That does. That's the goat law. Where'd you get that?
13:10Now this piece is just bent on one end and nothing on the other end. Okay. So now if you
13:18ever want to
13:18have, let me have that siding right there. Look what just happened. That's convenient right there. So
13:23you take the second part of the tool with only the one bend, put it underneath the siding and push
13:29down
13:30gently and you'll notice that the siding bulges out and bends enough so I can slide this other one up
13:36and rest it on top of the siding below and you create a hook. So let's say you want to
13:43hang something
13:43on your wall with this type of siding. You use that hook. You don't damage the siding. You hang
13:50whatever you want to hang and you haven't done any damage and you can take it up, put it away,
13:57take it out and move it somewhere else or just use it for another day. Wow.
14:02Wow. That's nuts. There you go.
14:09Hello. Hey, Mauro. Thank you so much for coming. Nice to meet you. How are you doing?
14:12Good. How are you? All right. Oh, nice house. Yeah. So we just moved in about a year and a
14:17half ago.
14:17Yeah. And I just got married two months ago. Wow. Both house and the wife? Yes. That's a perfect
14:22combination. Yeah. Thank you very much. All right. So yeah, it's been pretty busy. We've got this
14:27crack here on the ceiling. It's a bit of an eyesore. And also some water stain on this ceiling. Do
14:31you
14:31have any bathroom or anything upstairs? No bathroom upstairs, but the roof was leaking. The roof. Yeah.
14:36So we've since had the entire roof replaced. So that's all taken care of. It hasn't gotten any worse
14:41or anything. All right. I also noticed some pattern on that ceiling. Yeah. My wife and I really like the
14:45swirl pattern. Yeah. So if we could keep that, that'll be perfect. Yes, I can. Okay. I am going
14:50to step out, get some stuff. All right. Get back and we start to work. Great. All right, Will. The
14:56walls
14:56are protect. Floors are protect. Last time to open a little bit of the gap so we can start to
15:01patch in
15:02the ceiling. All right. That's what I'm going to do. And why do we have to do that? We have
15:06to open up so
15:07we can patch it. So how wide are you trying to get it then? Just about an inch of an
15:12inch. If you need to go back,
15:14go back again. And the other thing too, we don't want to disturb the pattern. Right. All right.
15:22All right. Time to prime. So what kind of primer are we using? We're going to use this shellac base
15:29primer. It's a prime sealer for water stains. Perfect. Let's start with this area here. So why do we need
15:36to use the primer before we patch the crack? Well, number one rule. Everything that hit with the water,
15:42water stain on your ceiling walls or any other area, you should prime it before you paint because
15:46if you don't prime, once you put the coat of paint on, the water stain will bleed right through the
15:52paint. Really? Okay. It's like a prime sealer. You've got to seal everything before you paint always.
15:59Makes sense. And not only are we priming
16:04inside the cracks, but we're going to prime all the water stains.
16:09All right. You want to take it over? Sure. All right. It's all yours.
16:15Just go nice and easy, all right? Let's finish the cracks first, right there.
16:24That's good. All right. Is that about enough? Yeah. So once you start to go into the pattern,
16:30just follow up the pattern design with your brush, all right? Don't go across,
16:35just follow the pattern like you're doing the pattern yourself. Yes. There we go.
16:42I even like the sound of the brush going to the patterns, right? Yeah, it's very satisfying.
16:48Oh, well, prime is in process drying. All right. Let's talk about the materials that we're using
16:56in this house. Okay. We have different types of joint compound. Oh, so this is all joint compound.
17:02It's all joint compounds, different times to dry. Okay. So over here, we have the regular joint
17:08compound. It takes a little longer to dry. If you're doing the whole ceiling, this is the way to go
17:13here,
17:14because you've got more open time. And then for repairs, we might use something that
17:18dries faster, which is the dry mix. You put a little bit of water. It would take about 20,
17:2325 minutes to dry. For small batch, this is really nice. And then here we have the popcorn ceiling,
17:30which is another texture that you can use on your ceiling. Yep. That looks just like what we have
17:34upstairs. All right, let's practice. We're going to apply the wet joint compound, and then we're going
17:42to create that pattern. Okay, perfect. Yeah, I was hoping we could get a little practice first.
17:46So why would you want to use the wet one for this? Because you have a little more open time
17:51to work over your patterns. So we're just building up enough to work with right now? Just build enough
17:55to create the pattern. Now, there's two ways we can do this. There's this little, like this little teeth
18:09tools. Right. Then you can go like this, curve, and come back. Right. Or we can do it with the
18:18brush,
18:19right, which is a thick, stiff brush. You start right here, go out, make your turn, and come back down.
18:28Yeah, that looks more like what we've got above us there. Yeah. Look at that. All right.
18:36Not a lot of pressure. Okay. Just enough to create the pattern.
18:42Nice. Should I try another one? Try another one.
18:52Nice. Cool. All right. It's not so hard. So we're not done yet. There's another pattern to go here.
18:59So we're going to start, we're going to get right in between the two of them, right here. You get
19:07the
19:07first, the second, and then this hits about 50% higher. Okay. And then you're going to go just like
19:13this, start right on the center, and then create a pattern. Should I go counterclockwise like before?
19:19You can go. Whatever you feel more comfortable doing it. I think I'll be the consistent way. Yeah.
19:25Perfect. Okay. How could I have made that a little bit better? That's part of the pattern. Oh, okay.
19:31Yeah. Look at that. A little bit rough. They're all different. Try redoing one. Let's see what happens.
19:37Those follow up the same pattern. All right. That's great. It's time for us to patch, but
19:45before we need to make the mix. We get the dry compound right in there. So what kind of consistency
19:53are we going for here? We don't want it too stiff. We don't want it too smooth. We're just going
19:58to be
19:58right in the middle. Then you go up like this. All right. And then you start to apply. Just like
20:16that.
20:18Okay. So not too much then. Not too much, but move, you know, try to cover. So you can
20:28stuck the filler right in there. All right. Just like that.
20:36All right. Now we use the brush.
20:40You're going to follow up the pattern. Whatever the pattern goes this way,
20:44this is where the brush goes. Okay. Just like that.
20:48It's going to stretch it down a little more if you like. Yeah. Because the important thing for us
20:56now is just that line of crack up there.
21:02That looks good.
21:05Okay, Will. Time to paint. All right.
21:08You go like this.
21:09What we're using here is a flat water base paint. And it was a match from the existing color.
21:15This is a paint and primer and one. All right. This is way to here. You can go any direction
21:21you
21:22want. You want to follow up the pattern. That's fine. If you want to go side to side like this,
21:26it's all fine. So I know we did the primer earlier, but why are we doing paint and primer now?
21:32There's two different types of primer. One was a shellac base that will seal all the water
21:38stain on the ceiling. And this one is a water-based priming paint. All right. It looks dry. What do
21:45you think? How can you tell that it's dry? Well, when you see a little sheen means the paint's still
21:51wet. Right. When that sheen disappear, it goes away. Yeah. It means the paint is dry and it's ready
21:56for the second coat. Okay. It's looking dry. Oh, Will. Look at that. Yeah. Looks much better than before,
22:07doesn't it? I think so. So is there anything else we need to do at this point? Oh, I think
22:10we're all
22:11set unless we have more work to do. Anything else? Well, upstairs we have the same exact crack and the
22:16water damage from the roof like before. Yeah. But it's a different texture. It's the popcorn. Popcorn?
22:21Yeah. Well, you know how to do it. The same system, just different texture. Right. Like the demo from
22:26before. Absolutely. You're going to do a great job here and there too. All right. Yeah. This was the
22:30harder part. Thank you very much. Thanks for having me here. Yeah, of course.
