07:18championship
07:19to the USA
07:22can in this penultimate event
07:24they win gold again
07:26win
07:26and he won the place
07:48they were done
07:50he only has an inkling
07:55started expected in a four by four hundred meter final. Quineira Hayes of
07:59the USA in lane number four going out hard as expected as is George of Nigeria in
08:04lane number seven. So down the back straight Hollywood Poland trying to hold
08:10on to Quineira Hayes. Jamaica going well with Gordon in lane
08:15number six. So Jamaica, Nigeria, Hayes for the USA.
08:23They'll swing round into the home straight. It's the longest leg of a four
08:26by four hundred meter relay. They stay in lanes and hand it over and Chrisanne
08:32Gordon of Jamaica has had a wonderful leg as has Quineira Hayes of the USA. Let's
08:37see who hands over first. It's the United States of America. On to Alison Felix, the
08:45most medaled athlete ever in World Championship history. Felix down the
08:51back straight has been an injury to Jamaica. An injury to McLaughlin will be on the second
08:57leg for them but down the back straight it's a huge lead already for the
09:01Americans. Massive disappointment for the Jamaicans. That creates an opportunity for
09:07others. Alison Felix leads. Watch the Nigerians. They're in second place. Great Britain coming
09:17through in third and the Botswanans and the Poles trying to come wide on the outside. Felix is out in
09:23a class of their own here. Great running by the British Quartet and Poland in third. USA,
09:31Great Britain, Poland. That's the top three.
09:35Shakima Wimbley for the USA, Alison Felix a fine run of course but look at the battle for the other
09:41medals. Ailey Doyle, Lavi and Nielsen, their team mate, ran a storming second leg. USA, Great Britain, Poland, Gworska on
09:55the third leg for them. Nigeria are trying to get back into this one in fourth place. The American team
10:01are gone. They're leading this by some 60 metres for Ailey Doyle of Great Britain, Northern Ireland,
10:07Kitsch. A little bit of a gap here between herself and the Polish athletes. So USA are going to hand
10:15over with a 50 metre lead. USA with Phyllis Francis now on the final leg. Ailey Doyle hands over to
10:23Emily Diamond. Poland in third. The crowd war because of the position of the British athletes. Phyllis Francis the individual
10:33gold medal winner in the 400 metres barring injury.
10:37USA are going to take gold in this one. The USA are going to take gold in this one. Emily
10:40Diamond is storming leg down the back straight for the British team. The Polish athlete here is struggling.
10:47Sviti, she's potentially going to be swallowed up here. Botswana, a man to Moncho. Trying to get back in the
10:57mix but the USA have gone. Phyllis Francis is going to bring them home for a gold medal. Great Britain,
11:04Northern Ireland is a proud war.
11:06Are they going to hold on for silver? Are they going to hold on for silver? Oh, what a finish
11:10here from Sviti. USA take gold. Great Britain, Northern Ireland takes silver. And Poland pick up the bronze. Well, there
11:21was some super fast running by the French team and the Nigerian team. 3.19.03. A two second world
11:30leading time by the Americans.
11:32Well, I mentioned the fourth athletes that have gone under 50 seconds in the individual 400 metres this year. Three
11:40of them were in that US team. Great running by them. Super running by the British team.
11:46And Poland, well, they did hang on and pick up the bronze. They were finishing fast. Well, you just can't
11:51beat that sort of quality. And the Americans had it in depth, didn't they? They toured it on. They toured
11:57it on.
11:57Felix, well, when she strode down that back straight on the second leg, it was all over. It really was.
12:04Well, let me read you out the splits that I've got for the US team. 50.5 for Hayes from
12:09a standing start. Then Felix, 48.8. What an athlete she is. Then Wembley, 49.6. Very good. And Felix
12:19Francis brought them home. 50.1 unpressed.
12:23Well, a great performance from the American team. Felix, I think, was the real key to that victory, if there
12:28ever was one.
12:29Because she made it, without any question, out of context for everybody else. Great run by the Great Britain team.
12:35Tragedy, though, for the Jamaican team.
12:37Their second leg, you know, it was almost as if they were going to move in and come up and
12:43challenge the Americans. And it was all over.
12:46Well, it's almost as if the Jamaicans are jinxed at this championship. They have been so unlucky and so uncharacteristically
12:55out of sorts.
12:56As opposed to the United States, who now have 10 golds, 10 silver medals and 9 bronze medals. Great performance
13:06from the British quartet.
13:08I think when the Jamaicans went out, Catherine, that gave them a massive opportunity.
13:13And they took advantage of it and gave themselves a brilliant opportunity to hang on to silver.
13:19Well, they did. They're always going to be in contention.
13:22You know, a medalist a couple of years ago in the center of the shot there,
13:25Lavia Nilsson ran an absolutely storming second leg, just like she did in the qualifying, Peter.
13:31I don't know what her split was for the British athlete.
13:33No, I haven't got that yet. But I mean, she ran 50.5 or so in the qualifying.
13:38And this was surely at least as good. Tremendous performance.
13:41And on all marks to Ailey Doyle, too, because she hasn't been in top form this year.
13:44But they brought her in for this race. Slightly questionable to replace Chex Drayton.
13:49But she was very strong, wasn't it, when it mattered?
13:53Confirmation then. USA take gold again. 3.19.02.
13:57Great Britain, Northern Ireland pick up a medal with silver and Poland pick up the bronze.
14:06Six seconds. That's just an incredible winning margin. Totally dominant.
14:16We look at Phyllis Francis here on the final leg.
14:19It's a wonderful position to be in a 4x400 metre relay. I promise you, when your teammates have done everything
14:26for you and you just have to coast round.
14:28But look at the battle here. Swieti of Poland went wide into the second lane. She had an absolute blinding
14:34leg as well, the Polish athlete.
14:35But such was the advantage that the British team had, she couldn't close back on Emily Diamond.
14:40Well, Swieti is one of those great athletes on relays particularly. We've seen it time after time that she runs
14:46really well on the last leg for them.
14:48They brought her in for that. Lovely, smooth action here. The Americans in a different class.
14:53And for Alison Felix, she's got 16 World Championship medals now. She was desperately disappointed with her bronze in the
15:01individual 400 metres.
15:03The relay split that Peter's just told us. Well, you know the story. If she could have replicated that in
15:08the individual, then it would be a different story.
15:10But some athletes are totally different, aren't they, in relays, than what they are in the individual events.
15:15I think really, as I said before, Felix's second leg for me was a real highlight.
15:21You know, because she literally just tore down the back straight. I've never seen her do anything like that in
15:25the individual.
15:26And in the end, she came back with that wonderful performance.
15:29Well, anything sub 49 seconds in terms of obviously individual running is absolutely superb.
15:35But even in relay running, Peter, a 48 point split is something that not many have done in recent years.
15:42No, you have to allow a little bit for a running start, don't you?
15:44So you won't quite replicate that in an individual race.
15:48But that's certainly worth, well, in the mid 49s anyway.
15:53Well, it was a wonderful race by the Americans. Outstanding championships for them.
