BMitch and Tobi react to Washington opening the season against Philadelphia.
Transcript
00:00We're getting most of Washington's schedule.
00:03We'll get the full schedule tonight.
00:04We'll know exactly, you know, a lot of these are rumors and leaks and different things.
00:08We know for sure, basically, the game in London in Week 4.
00:11Yeah.
00:12We've got a couple other leaks, but...
00:13They gave us that one.
00:14If we look at the schedule now, B-Mitch, I've basically got Week 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10,
00:2011,
00:2114, and 15 all rumored, written down.
00:24So we just got two more rumors.
00:26Week 1, Washington's going to start the year on the road at Philadelphia.
00:30And then the other one we just got is Week 5, Washington at home, hosting the Giants.
00:36And the reason that one's interesting, B-Mitch, is the Week 3, 4, 5 stretch is going to be this.
00:42Week 3 at home against the defending Super Bowl champs, Seattle.
00:46Week 4 in London against Indy.
00:49Week 5, no bye week, back home against the Giants.
00:52Wow.
00:53That's a tough little stretch right there.
00:54I like it.
00:55But so basically what you heard is Philly and the Giants, that's two games in the first five in your
01:02division.
01:02Yeah.
01:03And we don't know Week 2 yet, and we don't know either Dallas game.
01:05I think last year we had most of the games late.
01:09So already too early, that's true.
01:13Well, especially starting in Philly.
01:14Get out the gates strong, please.
01:16Yeah.
01:16Listen, I just think that that's how you're supposed to start every year.
01:19Yes.
01:20I don't think you're supposed to be starting slow.
01:21You know, I think the rules have changed for football, but still the people who are involved with it, they
01:29know you got to be ready to go.
01:31So I just think off-season, training camp, intensity need to be turned up a little bit.
01:38The interesting part about this, B-Mitch, is I was going to ask you about this, but then we just
01:42found out the answer to this before I was able to really dive into it.
01:45But Week 5, so they're coming back from London, and they're not going to have a bye week.
01:51I didn't want them to have a bye week in Week 5.
01:53I hate the early bye.
01:54I'd prefer at least somewhere in the 6-7 range, and then maybe getting closer to Week 12 or something
02:00like that is where I prefer.
02:00I'm asking this question.
02:01Why are you prefer it?
02:03Well, it doesn't matter for me, frankly.
02:05No, I'll just ask the question, because, like, listen, I think bye weeks, players may say certain things, but if
02:13you ask them every year,
02:14they'll change it.
02:16Because if I'm on a roll, and I've won five in a row, and the bye is coming up, I
02:20don't want it to be there.
02:21Interesting, yeah.
02:22But if people are banged up, I want it as soon as we can get it.
02:25Well, and that's part of why I generally like it a little bit later on, is I like the idea
02:29of,
02:30all right, we've played 10 straight weeks to start the year, and then here comes the 11th week,
02:33we get a couple of days off, versus early in the season when hopefully you're still a little healthier.
02:39But, I mean, we saw with this team last year, they could have used the bye at basically any point
02:43in the season,
02:43because they had injuries all throughout the year.
02:45So even if they would have been a week five bye, that would have been fine for them last year.
02:48But I think that's interesting, that coming out of London, because I think that's a decision that the commanders get
02:53to make.
02:54Understanding that you go overseas, I'm pretty sure you get to make the decision on whether you're going to play
02:58the following week or not,
02:59and they've basically said, give us a bye a little bit later, we're good playing the week after.
03:03I don't think that's true.
03:06Is it not?
03:06Because you've got so many different teams that are playing overseas now that you can't be asking,
03:11oh, you want to play next week?
03:12Well, and they obviously accommodated them, because they're playing both games at home in week three and week five,
03:18before they go to London, so sandwiching it in there.
03:20And, you know, it's not as bad of a trip going to London.
03:23You know, it's almost the same as just going the opposite way over a West Coast game.
03:26It's really not that different of a schedule.
03:28You're going ahead, and then you're coming back.
03:30So I think it's a good idea to have them playing, but just some of the rumors that we've got
03:34so far,
03:35and we can react if you want to hop in, feel free, 800-636-1067.
03:39Listener lines are open.
03:40Week one, Washington's going to start the year at Philadelphia.
03:43Week three, you've got Seattle at 1 o'clock.
03:46Week four, on the road, going to London to take on the Colts.
03:50Week five, back home against the Giants.
03:53We don't have week six or seven.
03:54Week eight, Sunday night football, Washington and Philly.
03:58So there you go.
03:58Both Philly games in the first eight weeks of the season.
04:01Week nine, hosting the Rams.
04:04Week 10, Thursday night football, on the road against the Giants.
04:08Week 11, Monday night football, Joe Burrow comes to town, Cincinnati Bengals.
04:13Week 14, Houston, and week 15, Atlanta both at home.
04:16Yeah, against Cincinnati Monday night football.
04:17I can see that happening because you've got two guys from LSU.
04:21Both of them won the Heisman.
04:22Well, the last time they matched up.
04:23The last time they played, it was a hell of a game, and then they flew straight to Arizona.
04:28Yeah.
04:28I remember that.
04:29That was such a fun, that was Jaden Daniels coming out party.
04:32That was one of the best games I've watched the last couple of years.
04:35So they'll meet a Monday night football in week 11.
04:37So that basically leaves you, the whole home schedule aside from Dallas is pretty much out.
04:45The road schedule is still pretty much up in the air.
04:48And that leaves you with possible bye weeks of week 6 and week 7, and then week 12 and week
04:5413.
04:56So I think the way that this is playing out is going to be interesting.
04:59They could start the year with two road games.
05:01They could also end the year with a couple of road games, which isn't ideal.
05:04But regardless, we know most of the schedule for Washington, 800-636-1067 if you'd like to hop in.
05:13Three primetime games, four standalone games announced right now.
05:17So the primetime ones would be Philly Sunday night in week 8, Thursday night against the Giants in week 10,
05:25and then Monday night against Cincinnati we just talked about in week 11.
05:27And then the other standalone is the London game against Indy in week 4.
05:32So they're still going to have chances to play in primetime, not as many as what they did last year,
05:37and we could still find out some more tonight.
05:39But for me, I look at the primetime a little differently than people
05:42because we just think Thursday night, Sunday night, Monday night.
05:47I think them 425 games sometimes, prime.
05:50Definitely when you go to London at 930 in the morning, another game will be on TV.
05:54You know, that's prime.
05:56So I think it'll balance out.
06:00So if you look at it now, B-Mitch, they're not going to have the loaded up back-end schedule
06:05of division games
06:06because we know four of them now.
06:09Philly, week 1 and week 8, and then the Giants week 5 and week 10.
06:13We don't know Dallas.
06:15I would assume Dallas is one of the week 16, 17, 18 games.
06:19But that's the only ones.
06:21So at most, if you play Dallas twice in three weeks, which I don't see them doing,
06:26that's the only way that you can load up the last couple of weeks of the season having divisional games,
06:30which is different than what we saw last year.
06:32Last year, we had a ton of them at the end.
06:34Yeah.
06:34Yeah.
06:35But I don't know.
06:37I'm going to see.
06:38Listen, I would love to have them early.
06:40You know what that does?
06:41That puts an emphasis on what we're doing getting to the season.
06:45Sometimes, I think, when you have some of those divisional games at the end, you go,
06:50oh, we can work ourselves into it.
06:52No.
06:52I like to have seasons where when it starts, we got to go for it.
06:57So we'll see.
06:59Well, and you just brought that up a little bit earlier when we were talking about them playing Philly at
07:02the gate.
07:02Yeah.
07:03They're going to have to change some stuff up in training camp to up the intensity because they've got to
07:07be ready to roll.
07:07I want to see that.
07:10Listen, I know the rules don't allow you to.
07:13And I just want to change a little notion that people have.
07:19When Coach Gibbs was here in that first stint, we weren't tackling to the ground.
07:25Like people think we were full gear tackling to the ground.
07:29No.
07:29He called it full speed butt up, which means the tackler comes in.
07:34He wraps his arm around you.
07:35He lifts you.
07:37He lets you down.
07:38You continue running.
07:40So in essence, to wrap up and lift, if I hit you, wrap and fall, I would have tackled you,
07:46right?
07:46Yeah.
07:47But you're going to keep running because you're going to get your conditioning as well.
07:51And that team was excellent.
07:53Those teams were excellent.
07:54I move on to Philadelphia.
07:56We rarely wore full gear, but you would have sworn it was a track meet.
08:02So there's a way of elevating the intensity without bringing risk in the way.
08:07You know what I'm saying?
08:08Yeah.
08:08Where you're going to be having people harm.
08:10Because tackling people to the ground, that ended a long time ago.
08:14Well, in college, people were doing it still.
08:16In high school, they do it because you've got 100 and some people on the roster.
08:19You don't have that in the pros.
08:21Yeah.
08:21So there's got to be a way to up that intensity.
08:23They'll find that.
08:24Did you notice a difference last year in terms of what we saw in the first year of DQ and
08:28second year of DQ?
08:29I think part of it, too, B-Mitch, is you had an older roster.
08:32So there were a lot of off days.
08:34I believe they were trying to protect a lot of people.
08:36And they were.
08:37It's not as old of a roster this year, although I think they're still one of the older rosters
08:41because of a couple of older gentlemen on the team.
08:44But for the most part, they've got a younger roster they're going to be able to get after.
08:47But I think they learned lessons from last year, really.
08:49I mean, the slow start, injuries all over the place, and hopefully the injury bug's better
08:53in your favor this year.
08:55But there's got to be a way to get out to a better start.
08:57Normally it is.
08:58Normally that injury thing goes.
09:00It's like a little rolling heel.
09:02I hate saying you got lucky, but things went your way in that first year of DQ.
09:06They got every break.
09:08Yeah.
09:08You know, and that's the way to cookie crumbles, the way to ball bounce.
09:11You know, use any cliche you want.
09:13That's it.
09:13Yeah.
09:14It happens like that sometimes.
09:15And I think a lot, and then also, you know, you got that close and then you bring in a
09:21certain people and you were like, okay, we want to make sure everybody's healthy.
09:24Like, you know, hear people all the time basically want to put people in bubble wrap.
09:27My whole thing is that doesn't help you become better football players.
09:31You become better football players by practicing football and playing football at a certain speed.
09:37Okay.
09:38I'm not saying there's certain, you got to be a football game intensity, but that speed has
09:44to get there.
09:45If you run around full speed and stuff like that, you know, you'll be in the right position.
09:50Because half the time when people get hurt on the football field or don't make the play,
09:54their feet are not in the right position, which means they're loafing and they're not
09:58getting where they're supposed to be.
09:59You get where you're supposed to be.
10:01You can make some things happen.
10:02Well, and I think too, they have to up the intensity for a couple of reasons.
10:05Obviously, we want to see them be better out of the gate, but you saw young guys last year
10:09not take as big of a step as you would hope that they would in year two versus year one.
10:13I think you need to up the intensity and make sure that guys are progressing and they're
10:17going at full speed to learn the game.
10:19Also, you've got two new coordinators.
10:21You've got to learn the systems with these guys.
10:23And there's, you can only learn it so much by going walkthroughs.
10:26Yeah.
10:26Yeah.
10:27And I just think that this is something I'll throw out there.
10:30Anybody that knows any of the young guys on the team, the veteran's not going to always
10:35come to you.
10:36Okay.
10:36They've been here.
10:38You need to go ask questions.
10:40Okay.
10:41Ask them, can you work out with them?
10:43Bring your notepad.
10:45Start writing down stuff and try to imitate and emulate exactly what they do.
10:50I was that person when I came here and Brian Westbrook, when I was in Philly, that dude
10:56came to me and produced the early, but can I ask y'all some questions?
10:58That's the first time I ever saw somebody writing down the stuff we were saying.
11:02And he would go out there, he would do exactly what we say.
11:05So the guys that have been doing it, pick their brains.
11:08Because one thing they knew, if they see you asking, they know you're serious and they
11:14want to help.
11:15But if you just walk around like you know everything, they're going to let you go around
11:18like you know everything.
11:19And normally you will not elevate as quick as you should.
11:22That was one of the things I always appreciated seeing Jaden early on.
11:26Always picking the brain of Bobby Wagner.
11:27Trying to figure out, hey, what are you seeing here?
11:29There you go.
11:30You know, what am I?
11:31What are the things I'm doing?
11:33Monty Coleman, you know, just passed away.
11:35Monty's always telling me the things I was doing that was giving him a hint to what I
11:40was doing.
11:41So now I can stop doing it.
11:44So now I got to the point where I was doing stuff to make you think I was doing something
11:48else.
11:48And then I'll do something else.
11:50You know what I'm saying?
11:50Man, so you can learn from your veteran players on your side of the ball, but you can learn
11:55so much more from the guys on the other side of the ball.
11:57Because when you give off those tendencies, you're going to have a problem.
12:00We revealed most of Washington's schedule.
12:02We'll get the full thing tonight.
12:04We gave you some of the leaks.
12:05If you want to hop in, feel free.
12:06800-636-1067.
12:08We also found out the Thanksgiving slate.
12:10There's going to be a game before Thanksgiving.
12:12It's going to be three games on Thanksgiving and a game on Black Friday.
12:15And it looks like it's going to be a heck of a weekend around Thanksgiving.
12:17Let me tell you, man.
12:18The NFL is telling the rest of the leagues, eat it.
12:22We own you.
12:23We own you.
12:24Don't care what you say.
12:25We're going to own all this crap.
12:27We'll break it down for you next year on B.
12:28Mitch and Finley on The Fan.
