A McDonald’s restaurant in Kingstanding has been fined after magistrates heard unsafe food was served during a mouse infestation. The franchisee admitted breaching food safety and hygiene rules, but the court was told the branch later received the highest hygiene rating.

00:26The court heard there were droppings in food preparation spaces and near the drink station, plus a dead baby mouse.
00:35Prosecutors said unsafe food was being served.
00:38The restaurant was then closed under an emergency prohibition notice because officers judged there was an imminent risk to health.
00:47The branch was allowed to reopen after required safety work was completed.
00:52It is run by Remmer Restaurants, a local McDonald's franchisee.
00:57The company admitted breaching food safety and hygiene regulations, and it was fined £8,000 with a £2,000 surcharge

01:09Its defence said the conditions were unacceptable but said no customers were reported ill or harmed.
01:15Magistrates also heard changes had been made at King Standing, including a new manager and stronger pest controls.
