00:03No caravan no worries today on Creek to Coast. I think I'm all set now you've
00:08answered all my questions. Do you trust me? We do. Talking all things
00:13Camplify on the Sunshine Coast. I'll give you a call if I need you. Barra season is
00:18well and truly open. And touring tips in time for the holidays.
00:46Well Easter for me starts in February and it's not because of the chocolate or the
00:50hot cross buns, although I will be getting some of those. This is the time when I
00:54start to plan for my Easter trip away. And those plans start by making sure my
00:59vehicle is in good shape. When you're away on a trip, the last thing that you want
01:05is failure of any kind. So to prevent this, you need to spend some time going through
01:10your car and checking that everything is a-okay. Check your oil, make sure your
01:14bushings, your suspension is in check. Heck, the wheel nuts on your wheels, make sure
01:18that they're nice and tight. You also want to make sure that you go over your 12
01:22volt system. Make sure that it's fully charged and it's actually going to power
01:26your fridge. Because the last thing you want is your fridge to fail. Now if you
01:30plan on going off-road, which I certainly do, you want to make sure that you've got
01:34a good quality recovery kit and it needs to be somewhere accessible. So if I get
01:38stuck, open on my drawer and here it is. What you want to do is give your recovery
01:42kit a good visual inspection. So pick it up, look it over, make sure that there's no
01:46tears, there's no rips. Because if you get bogged, you want this thing to work as it
01:50should. Also, let me show you this. So these are the XTM Soft Shackle. They're
01:55absolutely game-changer for your recovery kit. I've been using them for a couple of
01:59years. They go between your car and your recovery rope or your winch and they make
02:03your recovery a whole lot safer by eliminating any metal.
02:14Finally, whether you're camping up top in the rooftop tent or you might be sleeping
02:19in the swag, make sure you open them up prior to check for any rips, tears or even
02:25mould. Whether it's the beach, bush or anything in between, BCF has you sorted
02:31for any gear you need this Easter.
02:37Finally, you want to make sure that you pick a great campsite just like this,
02:42a beauty from hip camp.
02:45So whether you're a family or you're a dad like me that's able to sneak away for the
02:49afternoon.
02:59The Sunshine Coast. From Caloundra to the Kaloola National Park.
03:04It's 60 kilometres of pristine south-east Queensland coastline.
03:12From the beaches to the hinterland, the sunny coast is packed with surprises.
03:17Micro breweries, quality coffee and superb seafood are all part and parcel.
03:28If you're visiting this area between July and October, make sure to keep an eye out for the
03:33migrating humpback whales as they travel close to shore. You can even swim with these gentle giants.
03:39The Sunshine Coast fishery is also one of the country's most diverse. Summer brings a great
03:45range of whiting off the beaches and as the water temp dips in winter, the snapper and
03:50pearlies come out to play. If you're a fan of the outdoors and need a trip away to a place
03:55that runs on
03:56holiday time, the Sunshine Coast is the place for you.
04:08Hi, my name's Robbie Porter. I'm the Senior Special Project Officer for AusFish. I work in
04:14Shell Fishery for restoration. Well, AusFish is a nationwide organisation. We've got chapters all
04:19around Australia and the whole idea is that we create habitat for fish. Eight or nine years ago,
04:25we all found out that Moreton Bay had lost 96% of our shellfish reefs. When I heard this, it
04:31was like
04:32a light bulb. It was a calling and we needed to fix this. It was an emergency. We've got a
04:38fantastic
04:38band of volunteers together and we're always really hard to develop quite a few ways to restore shellfish
04:44reefs in Moreton Bay. We throw thousands of tons of these oyster shells into landfill every year.
04:53So it was a resource that we saw, well, we need to use them. And oyster shells actually have got
04:57a
04:58chemical signature on them that's really attractive to the swimming oyster larvae. And so they'll swim
05:03around for about two to six weeks looking for a place to land where they'll call home forever. If they
05:07find an oyster shell, they're one lotto and that's the perfect sport. So easy resource to get,
05:12really great for oysters. We just needed to work out how to actually make it work.
05:16But eventually we came up with using the welded wire mesh. It was readily available. It was pretty
05:22cheap. We could manufacture it and we designed the robust oyster basket, this triangular one you can
05:28see at the end. It's worked really well. We've been doing that for about nine years and we've got
05:33thousands of them in Moreton Bay. Every basket makes a new home for over 2,500 baby oysters or that
05:40grow
05:40into adult oysters. As well as that, they make homes for about 750 other animals, the other invertebrates.
05:47But there's heaps of places where oysters could potentially grow as well and heaps of other ways.
05:52So it's been fantastic having volunteers and working together to find new ways of doing these reefs.
06:01My name's Gary Gilchrist. I've been a volunteer at Ausfish here at Central Moreton Bay chapter for just
06:08on three years. What is encouraged in the chapter and is encouraged by Ausfish and in particular by
06:14Robbie Porter is innovation. And so two of the designs that I came up with were something, this one's called
06:24a Reef Star. It has a lot of very large surface area on it. It's more designed for deployment in
06:32intertidal zones. The other one is, well we've called it a cod cave. It creates an instant void and
06:38habitat underneath. And what we have found is that fish, especially flathead, love to live under these.
06:50Come and have a go. It's good fun. It's really good fun. It's really nice to be able to see,
06:55you're not necessarily
06:56going to see fish swimming through the things that you make, but you're going to end up seeing a pile
07:03of
07:03gear that will ultimately become places where fish and oysters will inhabit.
07:17I'm sure at some stage you've been driving around the road somewhere and seen the remnants of a ratchet
07:23strap on the ground. Might be from a work vehicle or a boat or whatever. They do come undone and
07:29they
07:29do break, especially on long road trips where you've got corrugated roads. Traditionally they wear through
07:35here or they might vibrate and break on the ratchet. So what do you do if you're in the middle
07:40of nowhere
07:40and you can't hold your boat down firmly on the trailer? Well, you do what we used to do, tie
07:46a knot.
07:47Call me old school, but knowing a few basic knots is a great skill to have and won't take you
07:52too long
07:53to master. So first up we have to secure it to the trailer. So we just go through once, go
07:59on one side
08:02of your main rope, go back through our latch and then on the other side. So you can see there
08:10it's
08:11on both sides and then that knot locks down on itself. And if in doubt you can just do a
08:18quick little
08:20half hitch. That ain't going anywhere in a hurry. We come through on this side, under our rails again.
08:30Oh, you've got another rag in here. Just a bit of extra protection so it doesn't rub through.
08:37And you often hear of this called a truckies knot. So we're going to start with just
08:41a loop. And all this does is make a little slip knot for it. Come back through like that.
08:48And there's our loop. So very easy to undo. But it gives us
08:57but it gives us a loop to tie our main rope to. Back down through here.
09:10And this is what's going to act as our ratchet. So we can pull that nice and tight. You can
09:17get
09:18plenty of pressure on there.
09:22And all you have to do to hold it in place is I'm just doubling it and coming through once.
09:30Obviously you're not going to leave all that on the ground. But I just want to show you how easy
09:34that is to undo. One. Two. I'm done. Simple as that. Let's do that again for you. A loop. Come
09:47up
09:47underneath. It forms our loop. Up through there. Pull down. I'm just going to finish it off properly
09:57this time. We'll just come through. Make that a bit longer. You can use that knot for so many things.
10:07Whether it's securing stuff on the trailer. Your tarp on the way to the dump. Your winch cable may
10:12have snapped. You can do that same knot through the tension to pull your boat back up on the trailer.
10:17Pretty easy one to do. Just a little bit of practice. Again, something to do on your wet Sunday afternoon.
10:25We love bringing you these little tips. So if there's something you'd like to see us cover,
10:29send us a message on Facebook and I'll look into it.
10:43I love getting away from it all. Off grid. Out in nature. Of course some creature comforts never go
10:49astray. But that's where a caravan comes in handy. Don't have a van? Neither do I. And yet this is
10:57all
10:57mine for the next couple of nights. Set up and ready to roll. How is this so? Well, I hired
11:05it
11:05through Camplify, an online platform connecting caravan owners and those who want to give it a try.
11:11Hello. Hi Olivia. How are you? Nice to be Julie. Richard. Very nice to meet you, Olivia. Just admiring
11:15all the places you've been. Julie and Richard are just a couple of the hundreds of RV owners across
11:22the country who rent their vehicles through Camplify. When we first heard about Camplify,
11:28I was Googling, we wanted to buy a caravan. We didn't really know which caravan to go with.
11:33Yeah. So we actually used Camplify to sample a few. Yeah, exactly. I love that.
11:38They ended up with this 19 foot trail, decked out with a double bed, bunks plus toilet and shower,
11:44making it perfect for the big lap. My youngest was six and my eldest son was nine. And we started
11:52down the Sunshine Coast and yeah, we travelled Australia as much as we could see within six
11:57months. Six months. When we came back, we didn't want to get rid of the caravan. We still wanted to
12:02go on holidays and we do. So why not let other people enjoy it as well? Income from Camplify has
12:09allowed the Stone family to keep their van and Julie has been able to quit her job. And it gives
12:14me the
12:15flexibility to spend time with my children. That's amazing. Yeah, that's the goal, isn't it?
12:21Yeah. Higher ease, like the Stones, deliver the van to your chosen location and show you how
12:25everything works. And we have an indicator here that shows you how full the water tanks are. When
12:30you're off grid, you want to make sure you're full water tanks. And if we want to turn the water
12:33on,
12:34we push this button here. They'll give you some towing tips, then they'll collect it when you're done.
12:39Julie and Richard will also let you use their vehicle for towing if you need it.
12:44All right. Thanks, guys. I think I'm all set now. You've answered all my questions.
12:49Brilliant. Do you trust me? We do.
12:51Yes. Oh, hesitation here. You'll be fine. All right. Enjoy.
12:55I'll give you a call if I need you. Okay, thank you. See you guys. See you in a few
12:58days.
13:02Time to explore.
13:05I'm set up at Riverside Farm on the banks of the Maroochee River. Scott Trevor owns the hip camp
13:11and has had this pretty parcel of land since the 40s. I like to meet every hip camper people
13:18that come here and tell them a little bit about the history of the farm. You've got a beautiful spot
13:24here, Scott. My mother and father and my three sisters came from Bundaberg
13:30in June 1941. Oh, wow. They purchased this cane farm
13:36and that's where I went to school straight away next month in July by school boat.
13:42The boat used to pick up Scott from this very jetty where he's now chucked in a crab pot for
13:47us.
13:49Oh, we've got a cue. You've got to be strong to lift it over the jetty.
13:52Yeah, we've got a small male here with the one claw. One claw. And the female.
13:55The female there. And a little male and the female. Look, they're here though,
14:01not the right size for us, but it's good to know that they're around.
14:04They're around. I had seven yesterday morning. Seven.
14:12We're going to throw it back. Righto. There you go, fella.
14:16Hopefully, I might have better luck wetting a line, but while I have a fish, I highly recommend you head
14:21to
14:22the Camplify website and check out the camper vans, motorhomes and caravans available for endless adventures.
14:32Welcome to the Atherton Tablelands. Beautiful, aren't they? Millions of years of volcanic action
14:38have created this 35 square kilometre Barrow playground. And smack bang in the middle of the
14:45Tablelands is where you find us today. Now, Lake Tenaroo is one of a few big Barrow
14:49hotspots in Queensland, and it's also one of the toughest Barrow fisheries in Queensland.
14:55So cross your fingers, we can bend a couple of rods today. You ready, Will? Wish us luck.
15:05If our guide, Will, has anything to say about it, we'll be seeing a couple of really good Barrow today.
15:11Will runs Fish Hunter FMQ and has Tinaroo dialed.
15:15They're here. They're just sitting up in the shallows there. Yep, yep. These are all Barrow.
15:21Are they? Yep. Tinaroo can be tricky for a number of reasons. Primarily, it's the barometric
15:27pressure which can determine how active these fish are. Because we're up in the Tablelands,
15:33Tinaroo sits higher above sea level than other dams in Queensland.
15:38So how important is your electronics in this part of the game? Yeah, it's everything. Yeah,
15:43yeah. Yeah, you don't want to fish where there's no fish. And what are you looking for, Will? I know
15:47there's different areas. Yeah, like little risers. I see we've got the wind here. Yeah. Looking,
15:52there's an island underwater, like a little sandbar back there. You're looking for where the wind's
15:56pushing on to start. In a dam, wind's your current. As for bite times, dawn and dusk work a treat
16:03up here.
16:03Will also tells me tide changes are very important. Even on a dam, fish inherently feel a tide change
16:10based on the lunar cycle. Lure of choice for the great Will. I love these Zerrick five and a half
16:19inch live mullets. As you can see, this one's quite a few. He does the job well. All right, go
16:25the Zerrick.
16:27It's a long cast out, slow wind back, and hang on.
16:34That one? Yeah, right. He followed you up. Followed it right there. Yep. I've seen him on the side
16:40skin. I'm like, where did that one go? Right there. That was a big fish. That was a massive big
16:44boil.
16:46If that's not a good sign, I don't know what is.
16:50Oh, yes. Get on there, Scotty.
16:54Oh, yes. He's a goodie, mate. Oh, jeez.
16:58You all right, you all right? Sorry, mate. You all right? Come to the back, mate. Come to the back.
17:02Oh, he's going under. Rod down, rod down.
17:06Sorry, buddy. All right, you all right? Sorry. Go under. Go under. Look at us go. Look at us go.
17:13This is what you call teamwork. There he is. Okay. Let me get the net out.
17:19That's a little bit of a tin-a-roo dance. Doing the tin-a-roo shuffle, Scotty.
17:23Oh. Okay, lead him over. Lead up, lead up. Okay, yeah, yeah. Keep him coming. Keep him coming.
17:29Come on, buddy. In the net, big boy. In the net, big girl. Big boy. Yeah!
17:36That'd be close to a metre, too.
17:39Oh, you little beauty.
17:45What have we got? Come along.
17:4898? 97? 97 centimetres.
17:5197. Good warm-up, mate. Good warm-up. Good warm-up.
17:56Just like that.
18:00Have a look at that.
18:02It's beautiful. The big bucket mouths all the way.
18:04It's in the hail there. Your lures or your hardbiter, your plackies, whatever you're throwing.
18:08Just a beautiful, big, beautiful, big fish. Oh, so stoked.
18:17Thank you. Thank you. There you go. A little touch on the tone. There she goes.
18:24The Tinaroo curse is broken. What an experience.
18:29With one on the board and more fish showing up as night falls, we're not going anywhere.
18:36Scotty. That's a good one. That's a big fish.
18:40Oh, sorry about my back, team. Where are you?
18:43I'm fishing in the dark. We don't get to do a lot of this on Corrected Coast, but
18:46fishing here at Tinaroo, the better bites are under the cover of darkness.
18:50So I've got the camo there. He's all set out with his little headlamp.
18:54I've got a tromp. Oh!
18:55He's a big one. He's a good fish. That's a top one.
18:58Nice and steady now, mate. Here he is. Look at him, mate.
19:04Please. Nice and steady, mate. Nice and steady.
19:09In the net. In the net. In the net. In the net, will you?
19:15I'll fix this. I'll see you.
19:17That's over a metre. That's probably going to be over a metre, Scotty.
19:21Hey. Have a good day, mate. Oh, that's... As I said, we don't get to do a lot of this
19:25fishing in the dark, so... To come up here, oh, just be calm. It is such a thrill. Such a
19:32thrill.
19:33And this, we're thinking, is over a metre. The sun's been set for probably 45 minutes.
19:39And here we are. Everyone else has got a headlamp on. I'm still shaking, but...
19:46I'm stoked. The thrill, the adrenaline is real. There you go.
19:52A metre. Touch him there.
19:55A metre four. A metre three. A metre three.
19:58We've just put him on the brag, mate. A metre three. So, I've got my metre barra here in Tinaroo.
20:05It's been a long while. A long while coming, but I got him. I got him!
20:12Gear up and tackle Tinaroo for yourself. Head online or in store to grab a couple of the Xerics
20:17that work for us today. If you want to hook up with Will, show him a bit of love on
20:22his socials
20:23at FishhunterFNQ. And if you're coming up this way, make sure you check in at the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort.
20:32The rooms are plenty big enough for yours truly. Oh, and did someone say swim-up bar?
20:38Here we go. Spin it around. There she goes. Touch of the tail. Swims away strongly.
20:45That has been years upon years upon years in the making. To get a metre barrier here in Lake Tinaroo
20:51for me,
20:51I'm over the moon. That's why I'm going to say goodbye to Creakty Coast for today.
20:54You can see I'm still shaking. I have loved every minute of it. Be sure to follow us on Facebook
20:58and
20:59Instagram. If you want to catch up on any episode you may have missed, you can do that on 7
21:03Plus.
21:05See you next time. I'm stoked.
21:07Creakty Coast is made in proud partnership with BCF. Boating, camping, fishing, that's BCFing fun.
21:13Auto Mall Aspley keeps us on the road. With the biggest and best brands on hand,
21:17finding a new car has gone up a gear. From off-road to offshore, cover yourself with UWE.
21:22Insurance that's a bit more U-shaped. Log on and off with Marine Rescue Queensland
21:27to help them keep you safe on the water. Look at us go. Look at us go.
21:32This is what you call teamwork. A little bit of a Tinaroo dance.
