00:04Muddies by hand this week on Creek to Coast
00:07That's a good crab, Ben
00:10That is a good crab
00:12Benny and Liv are patrolling the mangroves
00:15Well done, well done
00:16Well done
00:20Yeah, girl
00:21And I'm hitting the sand
00:32I'm sure you've all heard the saying before
00:34If you can't tie a knot, tie a lot
00:37Well, I've got a few simple ones to show you today
00:39That'll get you out of trouble
00:41So there's no excuse
00:42First up, we've got our dropper knot or pattern osterig
00:46Predominantly it's used offshore on the reef fishing
00:49But you can also, as I do sometimes
00:51Use it when you're fishing for whiting
00:53Because it allows you to run two hooks
00:56So we'll just do the offshore version first
00:59So all I'm going to do at the bottom
01:02Is a loop knot
01:03Just a simple loop knot
01:05And that'll feed through our snapper lead
01:10But then up here
01:11We're going to do a loop to attach our line
01:13So I usually like to make them a little bit longer
01:16So your bait will hang away from the line a bit better
01:19Fish like pearl perch seem to like the bait hanging away a bit
01:22It'll move around
01:23So all we do is just overhand like that
01:27And then we're forming a centre
01:30And spinning that around half a dozen times
01:33So you can see either side of that hole that I've made
01:37Are the twists in the line
01:39Then you just put this through
01:41And the important thing here
01:43Is you certainly need your mouth to do this
01:46When I pull them tight
01:48You want them both to come in at the same speed
01:51Not one quicker than the other
01:52Or it won't hold
01:59And then again before we tighten it
02:03Just wet it
02:04So you can see why they call it
02:06A dropper knot
02:08So you would run two of those
02:10And then you swivel up there
02:11Your sinker at the bottom
02:12And the way we put our hook on
02:15Double that over
02:19Put that through the eye of the hook
02:24And then you go once
02:25Twice
02:27Pull that in
02:29And there's your hook
02:30Hanging off it
02:33So last off is our loop knot
02:35Which we use for jig heads
02:37Fishing for soft plastics
02:38Or hard bodies
02:39For the likes of flathead or bass
02:41I've just got bigger versions
02:43So it's easier for you to see
02:44As is my big heavy line
02:46So all we do is tie an overhand knot
02:49Or a loop
02:50Hence the name
02:52Make that reasonably small
02:55Pass that through the eye
02:59Now if your line has come out
03:01Through the bottom at your loop
03:04Go in through the bottom
03:09Snug that up reasonably
03:10You just pull one in to make that
03:11Tighter
03:13So you don't want this loop to be too big
03:15Or it'll catch around the barb of the hook
03:19Or on the treble
03:21So reasonably short
03:22Just enough to allow that action
03:24For it to move around
03:26Now just pinch that above the knot
03:29Because we need that little loop
03:32The little hole there
03:34Half a dozen times
03:37And then where I've pinched it
03:39Just go back through that
03:41Again we always wet our knots
03:43Before we pull them tight
03:51And there you have it
03:52Your loop knot
03:52And you can see
03:54We've got a little loop there
03:55Which allows
03:56Your jig head
03:57Or your lure
03:58To move around freely
04:00And to stock up
04:01Or upgrade any of your terminal tackle
04:03Head online or in store
04:05To your local BCF
04:08A little bit of practice
04:09On a Sunday afternoon
04:10And you'll be tying them in your sleep
04:15Now I reckon there would be plenty of us out there
04:17Who have fond memories catching mud crabs
04:20But for me it was very much in a tinny with Dad
04:23Pulling up pots on the sunny coast
04:25Okay so today I'm going to show you how to catch a muddy
04:27Without a tinny or a pot
04:29And muddy being the operative word here
04:32We're going to get muddy
04:34Let's go
04:35Today you join Olivia and I
04:37At a secret little spot of mine
04:39Where you can walk in on low tide
04:41And hunt for a few big rusty bucks
04:43By hand
04:44And if you keep your eyes peeled
04:46The action starts
04:48Before you even reach the mangroves
04:50So this is pretty common
04:52Like we're at the end of the tide here
04:54And the mud crabs
04:56That are feeding
04:56Will be moving out with the tide
04:58Alright you ready?
04:58Yep
04:59Going in
05:01Oh hear him?
05:02Yes
05:03As the tide recedes
05:04The crabs will find cover to hide in
05:06So an old piece of pipe like this
05:08Is a good place to check first
05:10His other claw
05:11His other claw's a good size
05:13Yep
05:14Slowly
05:14Just you don't want to rip a claw
05:15So just go slowly
05:16Or slowly let go
05:17That's a good crab
05:18Okay
05:18Well done
05:20That is a good crab
05:21Well done
05:22That's a cracker
05:24Look at that
05:24Far out
05:25That is
05:26Well done
05:27Not something that you do every day Ben
05:29Thank you for the guidance on that one
05:31Good crab
05:31Pulling this out of its sort of natural environment
05:33Feels very different
05:34To pulling it out of a pot
05:36It's like you
05:37With the crab
05:38And nature
05:39And you're just one on one
05:40Just doing your thing
05:41That is a ripper crab
05:42We're going to need to measure him
05:43So the proper way to measure a crab
05:46In Queensland
05:47Is obviously from the most
05:49Back
05:49Outer spike
05:51For the back spike
05:52And it's
05:53This has got to be 15 centimetres across obviously
05:56And it's got a catch on it
05:57So
05:58Back spike to back spike
05:59Yep
06:00So I would say that
06:01Oh we're in
06:02Just
06:03Just
06:03Yeah just
06:04Just
06:04Like a millimetre
06:05A millimetre or so yeah
06:07So yeah
06:07So that's illegal crab
06:09One in the bag is a good start
06:11Now we're going to head deeper into the mangroves
06:14With Ben's mate Benny Golden
06:15And my mate Jessica
06:16Along for the ride
06:18There's um
06:19Are the holes traditionally straight down
06:21Or are they
06:21To the side
06:22No
06:22Jesus wept
06:24Okay
06:24So he's right there
06:25Yep
06:26Did you get his
06:27Like legs or
06:28Something just touched me
06:29It could easily have been a fish
06:30I'm a little on edge
06:31Understandably
06:32So let's give that another go
06:34So
06:37Crabs will burrow into the mud
06:39And wedge themselves into the corner of these holes
06:41Some of which extend metres under the surface
06:45Okay so then I can feel his elbow
06:49Mmhm
06:50Yep
06:51And I'm
06:53I don't think I have the right spot to be able to get him fully out
06:58And I think I need perhaps a little bit of professional help here
07:01Ladies and gentlemen of the Creek to Coast family
07:04Enter Ben Golden over here
07:06Benny your best advice on this scenario where he's
07:09I think he's facing the front
07:11Yeah
07:12I think we're going to have to try and get in behind him somehow
07:16Which is going to be a bit difficult if he's tucked right up in the corner
07:18I'm actually in a slightly better position right now than I was a minute ago
07:22I'm now two centimetres behind his
07:28Oh I've got his
07:29Behind his claws
07:30Yeah so I'm heading up behind him
07:31Yeah if you can get him there
07:33As long as you keep weight down on his carapace and just slide him across that mud he can't buy
07:37it
07:38I don't have any weight on the carapace at this point
07:39So just to keep pushing
07:41Yeah but if you're behind you can get his back legs
07:43He's behind the claws
07:44Yeah
07:45Okay I'm literally going over
07:47The shell?
07:47No I'm getting the leg
07:48So I'm
07:49That's good
07:50I've got the third leg
07:51Yeah
07:51And I'm waiting to feel the swimmer
07:56There's some big grass going on there
07:59I think I'm going to have to refer to you on this one then
08:01So I got around the claw and I went each leg and I got to the back of where the
08:06swimmer was
08:07And then he was aware that I was no longer a fish or a crustacean
08:10Copy
08:11So you woke him up
08:11And he just went
08:12And I was like
08:13Yeah that's probably it for me then
08:15Could you show me how to get this done
08:17There you are Benny
08:18Okay
08:19Straight in
08:20Just waiting
08:22Benny will get it done
08:26Golden's getting down in the mud
08:28But he does best
08:30As Scotty would say
08:31The man with the longest arms in Queensland
08:33Yep
08:34Oh there's two crubs
08:35Oh
08:38That makes it interesting
08:39Here's a little one
08:47That's a good one bro
08:49Oh wow
08:51That's a good one
08:52That is a good crab
08:56It's not often I'm lost for words
09:00That's a cracker crab
09:02That is such a skill
09:05I'm so impressed right now
09:07That's a proper one
09:09Oh yeah
09:09I didn't even see
09:10That is a heavy
09:12Heavy
09:13Mud crab
09:14Next one's yours
09:16Ben
09:17Ben
09:18Ben
09:18Golden
09:19I still have nothing to say
09:23The confidence on you
09:24To be able to do that
09:25I had my hand touching
09:26Touching the claws
09:28I chickened out
09:29I couldn't do it
09:30I couldn't get it out
09:30The respect I have
09:31For you to be able to do that
09:33And people who traditionally
09:35Hunt crabs like this
09:36That is incredible
09:37Well done mate
09:38That is a decent
09:39Decent mud crab
09:40That is a good one
09:41Holy
09:43Look at that
09:44Centimetre over
09:45Easy
09:51It's always a good sign
09:52When you find a malt
09:53Sitting outside a hole like this
09:54So crabbed malt
09:55Once or twice a year
09:56And you can see here
09:57I'm going to use this
09:57As a bit of an education tool
09:59For you
09:59They've got their spines
10:00All up the side
10:01They've got nine spines
10:02Six in between the eyes
10:03And then nine on the edge
10:04So when you're down there
10:05Feeling for the crab
10:06All you've really got
10:08To indicate which direction
10:09The crab is facing
10:10Is feeling these spines
10:11So running your finger
10:12Along them
10:12If they're pointing forward
10:13You know the crab
10:14And the business end
10:14Is on this way
10:15But if I'm feeling it
10:16And I'm starting to get
10:17Spikes back this way
10:18It's probably the last thing
10:19I'll feel before I'll come out
10:20Without a finger
10:21So put this one back
10:22And we'll see if we can find
10:23What malted out of this
10:26Welcome back to Creek to Coast
10:28Where Benny and I
10:28Are deep in the mangroves
10:30Looking for mud crabs
10:35He's in there
10:36He's wedged in there
10:36You got him?
10:37Yeah I got him
10:38Oh god he's decent
10:39He's a good one
10:41Oh here he comes
10:43Oh he's not bad Ben
10:45He's a good one
10:47He's probably lost a nipper
10:48Once upon a time
10:49You can see this one
10:49A little bit deformed
10:51And um
10:51Bronze colour
10:52Yeah really rusty
10:54That's amazing
10:55So Ben
10:55What got you into it
10:57And how did you learn?
10:58So I guess I saw it
10:59First on television
11:01Like way back
11:02Way way way back
11:03I think it was on like
11:05Bush Tucker Man
11:06Okay
11:06And he was doing it
11:07With some indigenous people
11:08And I was like
11:08That is so cool
11:09And I was probably like
11:10Five years old
11:10And then obviously
11:12Didn't have the courage
11:13Or the ability to do it
11:14Until Benny Golden
11:15Actually got me
11:16Took me out once
11:17Yeah and we
11:18Came here actually
11:19And did it
11:19It's a similar story
11:21To me asking you
11:22Take me out
11:23Because I saw it
11:24Two years ago
11:25I think you brought
11:25Scotty out
11:26Yeah
11:26And I saw the episode
11:27And I thought
11:28That is the coolest thing
11:29If I can pull off
11:30Getting a muddy
11:31Straight out of the ground
11:32It's fun
11:32Have that conversation
11:33With you
11:33And here we are doing it
11:35Now's a great time
11:36To mention
11:37That the same size
11:38And possession limits
11:39Apply when catching
11:40These guys by hand
11:40And of course
11:41Females go back
11:42And a little reminder
11:44To take care
11:45When walking through
11:46The mangroves
11:46No need for any
11:47Broken roots
11:48I mean you guys
11:49Make it look easy
11:50To be honest
11:51I just
11:52I want to get the courage
11:53To make that big move
11:54You'll get there
11:55You'll get there
11:55We'll get you one
11:56We'll find you
11:57The appropriate
11:58Crab and hole
11:59And you'll be right
12:00I reckon
12:00But yeah that's a good crab
12:01He'll go definitely
12:02He's got a big character
12:03Yeah we should get
12:04Your measure up
12:05Alright
12:06Let's find you one Liv
12:07Okay mate
12:11Feeling down here
12:12Okay Ben
12:13Talk me through it
12:16Sitting there
12:16Facing towards us
12:17He's not too far down
12:18Do you want to have a go
12:19At this one Liv
12:19That'll be you
12:21I brought Jessica along
12:23Because she's
12:23Mackay born and bred
12:25And had a very similar
12:26Childhood to me
12:27Lot of fishing with your dad
12:28Lot of crabbing with your dad
12:29Do you want to have a crack
12:31This one will be you
12:33With the claws at us
12:34I've done a lot
12:34From the tinny
12:35Not so much
12:36Like this
12:37Alright then
12:39Should never have brought her
12:44Think he's as deep
12:45As he can be
12:45Felt like he was
12:47Up the back of the hole
12:47Oh it's the moving
12:50We're now moving
12:51She's saying hello
12:53Jessica
12:54Enough commentary
12:55From you thanks
12:57Alright so I'm on
12:58I'm on carapace now
13:00Oh
13:03You're kidding
13:05Oh wow
13:06Did you get in?
13:06Oh my god
13:07My heart is in my mouth
13:08All the icks
13:08Well well
13:09Well done
13:10Well done
13:11Well done
13:11Well done
13:14Well done
13:15Yeah girl
13:17Oh my god
13:18Jessica
13:20Of all the episodes
13:21We've done on
13:22Creek to Coast
13:23This moment
13:24Goes down in history
13:26And it's a backwards grab
13:28Look at that
13:29Whatever I'm doing
13:29It grabs
13:30I don't even think it's legal
13:31But I did it
13:32Look at him
13:33I'm happy to let him go
13:36Well done
13:38Yay
13:38Thank you for the education
13:40Benz
13:41Benz plural
13:45Talk about an adrenaline rush
13:47And with my first crab on the board
13:49I'm hooked
13:52Oh this is not bad
13:53Dad this is iron
13:55Oh there's leg marks as well
13:57Okay from everything
13:57That both the Benz have taught me
13:59And this is actually
14:00A pretty shallow hole as well
14:03He's actually facing the back
14:04As in
14:06The swimmers are facing me
14:07So we're in a good spot here
14:09Hang on
14:10Okay so I've literally
14:12Just
14:12Liv's yelled out
14:13And I've run over
14:13And she's already in the hole
14:15She's found a really good hole here
14:16And have you got him?
14:17No not yet
14:18So
14:18Okay
14:19Pull me through it
14:20The legs around the side
14:22Yep
14:22I've collected
14:23One
14:24Two
14:25Three
14:25And I'm on the shoulder
14:26Similar to the first one
14:27Okay
14:28Okay I've got flipper
14:29You've got both
14:30Almost
14:31Almost
14:32Okay both
14:33Both
14:33Both
14:33Both
14:33Both
14:33Make sure you've got a good hole in
14:34Just make sure
14:35Oh he's like burying now
14:37Stand by
14:38It's alright go slow
14:39You've got him good?
14:40I think so
14:41Oh wow
14:42Here we go
14:43You did it
14:44Oh not yet
14:45Hang on
14:46Wow
14:47Oh through this hole
14:49Wow wow wow
14:50Well done
14:50Hang on hang on
14:51We're not there yet
14:51We're done
14:52We're done
14:55Help me out
14:56There you go
14:57There you go
14:58Out he comes
14:59Wow well done
15:00Okay
15:03That is incredible
15:04I can't believe you just went in
15:06Well done
15:08Oh big
15:09What have you been calling them
15:10Bronzies
15:11Rusty
15:12Rusty bucks
15:12Rusty buck
15:15Well done
15:15Give us another hotline
15:16I'm so proud of you
15:17Well done
15:17Excellent
15:19Take your time when catching muddies like this
15:21Slow and steady
15:23And a reminder to respect the mangroves
15:25When you do go exploring
15:26And if you want a feed of crabs for yourself
15:28Whether it's using a pot or by hand
15:31I'd recommend stopping in at your local BCF
15:33They'll have you sorted with all the crab catching gear
15:36You could possibly need
15:54Now it's often the simple things in life that bring you the most joy
15:57And I couldn't agree more
15:59Now for me
15:59A beach
16:00Fishing rod
16:02And some good tucker
16:03Yes
16:04And I'm a happy man
16:06And today
16:07I'm going to try and tick off all three of those things
16:10Starting off
16:11With the local butcher
16:15The door even opens for us
16:18How are you team?
16:19How are you?
16:19Good how are you?
16:20Good thanks
16:21I've heard
16:22There's a little whisper getting around
16:23The best meat anywhere
16:25In South East Queensland
16:26You've heard right
16:27Warram
16:28You have heard right
16:29Yeah
16:29This place is awesome
16:31Rob and Katie run
16:33Warram Beach Family Meats
16:35Warram is the happier
16:37The sunniest side of the island
16:40Happiest and well fed
16:42Rob and Katie keep the windows stocked
16:44Full of delicious local cuts
16:46And it's not just me
16:48You've got a bit of seafood
16:49We do seafood
16:50We've got pie
16:51Gourmet pies
16:52We do our pulled pork rolls
16:54We do pizzas
16:56I love the OP ribs
16:57Okay
16:58I'll whack them in the oven
16:59And do a reverse sear on them
17:01And what would you say to anyone
17:02That's never been to Bribie?
17:03Oh come on down
17:04Check it out
17:06It's a little secret hidden gem
17:07Especially over here at Warram
17:08On the surf side
17:09Come and have a day out
17:11Day trip
17:11Come and have some lunch
17:13See the beautiful sights
17:14Perfect
17:15And meet the team in the butcher
17:16Exactly
17:17Now for me
17:18I'm going to be heading onto the beach
17:19Having a fish
17:20I'm going to cook myself up
17:21A bit of lunch
17:21What do you suggest maybe
17:23For the big man?
17:24Any of the gourmet sausages
17:26Yeah
17:26And some of the gourmet burger patties
17:29The Warram bangers are a go to
17:30The beef bacon and cheese snags
17:32Alright done
17:33So I'll get the
17:33The Warram bangers
17:35Yeah
17:35And I'll get a couple of beef patties
17:37No worries
17:37Done for you
17:38Done
17:38Awesome
17:39Awesome
17:41How good is this?
17:42Meat for the cook up later
17:43A little pie for now
17:45Yes
17:49Tuck a tick
17:50Now for the beach
17:55That'll do us
17:56Now I've done plenty of beach driving
17:57On Creek to Coast
17:58Over the years
17:58And one thing I've learnt
17:59Tire pressure
18:00Down to around 20 psi
18:02And the beauty about that is
18:03If you get stuck
18:04Or get in trouble
18:05You can always let a little bit of air out
18:07Another one
18:07Always work the low tide
18:11And of course
18:11A capable vehicle
18:12Makes all the difference
18:13Which is why I'm excited
18:15To put this BYD Shark 6
18:17Through its paces
18:19With 321 kilowatts
18:21Coming from its 1.5 litre
18:22Hybrid electric power plant
18:24It's got plenty of grunt
18:26When you need it
18:27And check this out
18:28A flick of the switch
18:29On the steering wheel
18:30And we can switch it over
18:31To sand mode
18:33So if you
18:34You know
18:34Entry onto a beach
18:35Coming off the beach
18:36If you hit any soft sand
18:37The key is momentum
18:38So keep going
18:39And just keep nice and steady
18:41If you need to give it a squeeze
18:42You can
18:42Momentum
18:43Momentum
18:44Down onto the hard beach
18:47And we're there
18:49Everyone breathes
18:50And we say time
18:51To try and find a little gutter
18:57All your regular
18:58Bread and butter species
18:59Call Warren Beach home
19:01From dart and brim
19:02To humble whiting
19:07Yup, yup
19:10Oh, done him
19:12Ha ha, bugger
19:14Oh, I had a nice little one on then
19:16Just got to wait
19:17Be patient
19:18Sort of sitting in the little
19:19Drop-offs there
19:20And bang
19:20They're coming up
19:21And whacking it
19:21So
19:22Oh, he was a bit of fish actually
19:28Not to worry
19:29We're in no rush
19:31I've found over the years
19:32That the beach
19:33Always rewards patience
19:35Even if the reward
19:36Is a small whiting
19:41Fishing done
19:42Now to try some of
19:43Rob and Katie's
19:44Best from the butcher
19:51Now one of the things
19:52I really love
19:53About the BYD Shark
19:54Are the three
19:55240 volt plugs
19:56Here in the back
19:56So at the moment
19:57I'm running
19:58Fridge freezer
19:58Induction cooktop
20:00But just picture this
20:01You're heading away
20:02Camping
20:02You could take
20:03A portable air con
20:04You could take
20:05Your coffee machine
20:05I mean it's
20:07Glamping really
20:08It's not camping
20:08And these are coming on good
20:16If you want to dial up
20:17Your off-road experience
20:19And turn your camping
20:20A bit more glamping
20:21Head to Auto Mall
20:22Aspley
20:23And test drive
20:24A BYD Shark 6
20:25Like this
20:26This thing really shows
20:27What a plug-in
20:28Hybrid electric ute
20:29Is capable of
20:30And with up to
20:30800 kilometres
20:31Of combined range
20:32I'll finish lunch
20:33Have one more flick
20:35And have plenty of juice
20:36To get home
20:37And then maybe
20:38Do it all again tomorrow
20:40Now earlier on in the show
20:42We talked about
20:42The simple things in life
20:43Now this here
20:44Is me to a tee
20:44Fishing rod
20:45On the beach
20:46Back of a vehicle
20:48And just about to devour
20:49This beautiful burger
