00:03You are about to watch flash highlights of one of the most incredible Giro d'Italia stages of the modern
00:09era.
00:09Today really was something else.
00:12The second stage back on Italian soil, stage 5, between Praia Amare and Potenza,
00:20riding from Calabria on the coast in the sunshine into Basilicata and up into the lower Apennines.
00:27A wonderful day for Judo Ciccone to be in the Malia Rosa.
00:34Paul Manier also wearing the Malia Ciclamino and Diego Savilla you can see there in the Malia Azura.
00:44What would happen on this first big mountain day as well?
00:483,846 metres of elevation to come and expected rainfall, heavy rainfall expected across the middle part of this stage.
00:57And trust me, the rain was impactful.
01:01This was pretty much the last of the dry weather they saw as the battle for the breakaway began.
01:06And today's big breakaway was to be a very big one as well.
01:11Early problems for Matthias Kopecki.
01:13And as you can see, this was when the rain started with 180 kilometres to go.
01:19It was to be an incredibly tough day out.
01:23Early mountain points as well in the third category.
01:26Prestieri, Aino Rubio of Movistar getting them ahead of Guillermo Silva, who was on the move again.
01:32Former Malia Rusa, of course.
01:34And behind, a large group was starting to form.
01:39Aino Rubio was looking good.
01:40Eventually, as we got over the top of that climb and the couple of jagged edges afterwards,
01:44we would get a leading group of 12 riders, including Victor Campenaz, who was busy trying to warm up his
01:49face.
01:50We then went through the Malia Ciclamino points as well.
01:55It was Manueli Tarossi, Bardiani, who took the 12 points there as well.
02:00But in amongst the terrible weather, things really started to break up too.
02:07And the crucial thing was, as you can see, the gap back to Giulio Ciccone.
02:12His team were chasing and they were getting some help from a Red Bull borer handscrow.
02:17This was Igor Arrieta, the Spaniard for UAT Memoritz, attacking to see if he could go across to the group
02:24as well.
02:24There were a few moments when it looked as if the rain had calmed down as they were riding between
02:30the two big sets of hills.
02:31But they were headed for the Apennines, the lower Apennines.
02:35And this man, Igor Arrieta, climbing brilliantly and looking very good today.
02:43He had had Jonathan Narvaez in the breakaway, but the breakaway itself of 12 was also splintering.
02:49And so they were making their way up towards the Montgrande di Vigiano, the main climb of the day.
02:57Second category climb.
02:58And it was Igor Arrieta by this point and Alfonso Eulelio who detached themselves.
03:04They went over the top first, Igor Arrieta taking the points.
03:08Then came some incredibly tricky descending as well.
03:13More than one or two riders coming a cropper on the various descents.
03:18But what it gave us were these two out front.
03:21Igor Arrieta and Alfonso Eulelio and a chase group as well behind, including Johannes Kulset doing his best.
03:29Giulio Ciccone was honouring the jersey, chasing on the front of what remained of the Malia Rosa group.
03:36These two persisted.
03:37They went through the Red Bull Kilometre together.
03:39And Alfonso Eulelio, who'd been the best place rider in that breakaway anyway,
03:42he took the six bonus seconds ahead of Igor Arrieta.
03:48Lorenzo Milesi took the final two seconds there at the Red Bull Kilometre.
03:52Then came some really tricky descending.
03:56First one to come a cropper, Igor Arrieta.
03:58He crashed, remounted and was chasing Alfonso Eulelio with just 13k to go.
04:03Would he get back in touch?
04:06Well, before he had a chance to, Alfonso Eulelio had crashed himself with six and a half kilometres to go.
04:12Both of our two leaders, despite the enormous gap back to the Malia Rosa group, nearly eight minutes.
04:19Terrible trouble for both of them.
04:21And actually, both of their crashes would eventually bring them back together.
04:27The sun came out.
04:28It looked like we were going to get a sprint adieu, two riders together, until this happened.
04:32Igor Arrieta going wide on a corner through the tape.
04:35Surely then at that point that would mean Alfonso Eulelio with 2k to go would ride away to the finish
04:41by himself.
04:43Or so you thought, because this was the rise to the finish line.
04:47Alfonso Eulelio thinking he was rounding in on not just the Malia Rosa, but his first stage win.
04:52First professional win in actual fact.
04:54But it wasn't to be because Igor Arrieta was coming and coming.
04:59He'd engaged the big gear, was winding it up towards the finish line, came off the back wheel of Alfonso
05:04Eulelio.
05:05And just as his father had done many years ago, winning a Grand Tour stage, he took his own, Igor
05:12Arrieta, after all that, the winner in Potenza.
05:17But there was to be double delight, don't forget, because Alfonso Eulelio knew at that point he would take over
05:23the Malia Rosa.
05:25Arrieta with the stage win.
05:27Eulelio in second.
05:29And what an incredible day of racing.
05:33Quite unbelievable.
05:35And there's the GC, Christian Scaroni moving up to Alfonso Eulelio up into the Malia Rosa.
05:41Paul Magne.
05:44Hanging on to the Malia Ciclamino.
05:47And of course, the Malia Azura on the shoulders of Diego Sevilla.
05:54The best young rider, of course, is Alfonso Eulelio.
05:57The Malia Ciclamino.
05:59The Malia Ciclamino.
06:00The Malia Ciclamino.
06:00The Malia Ciclamino.
