00:30Beautiful sunny conditions in the south of Italy too.
00:33And Guillermo Silva, the Uruguayan, still in pink.
00:37Would he still be in pink at the end of the day?
00:39This was a fascinating stage with one big climb, the Cozzotuno right in the middle of it.
00:44Lots of talk about how tough that might be or how tough it might be made for the best of
00:48the sprinters.
00:49Would any of them survive? That's the question.
00:53Well, after three days of racing in Bulgaria where it was only two teams who wanted to get into the
00:57break,
00:57this time back on Italian soil, much more of a battle to be in that breakaway.
01:01We had six riders clear.
01:03Martin Marchalusi, Darren Rafferty, Johan Jacobs, Warren Bargui, Mattia Baiss and Nicolas Larsson were the sick who were clear as
01:12well.
01:14And they were going a long way to try and survive to the first sprint.
01:18And they did that, San Lucido.
01:20That was the sprint for the Chiquilamino points.
01:23And then the climbing started.
01:25Basically 15k uphill to Cozzotuno.
01:28And that's where they really started to lose their advantage too.
01:32Johan Jacobs doing long turns at the front.
01:35Warren Bargui wanting to use his climbing ability.
01:37The picnic post on El Raisin Man.
01:40But even he was caught.
01:41And we were being left with less and less.
01:43Our camera shots were picking up, of course, the sprinters going out the back too.
01:47Not just the sprinters though.
01:49This climb would become harder and harder.
01:51The Maliarosa himself going out the back.
01:53Guillermo Silva being dropped.
01:55And we were basically starting to see and expect that this would be a new day for the general classification.
02:01Silva getting distance.
02:02And it was Movistar, the Spanish team, who were doing the damage.
02:06The question is, who were they doing it for?
02:07Look at this.
02:08Egan Bernal dropping out the back too.
02:10So it wasn't just the sprinters who were being distanced on the Cozzotuno.
02:13Over the top, it was Nelson Oliveira who'd been doing a lot of long, hard driving at the front.
02:18They were trying to make sure Uluis Aula would be the best of the sprinters to survive.
02:23And it has to be said, that is exactly what Movistar did as well.
02:28Uluis Aula in what became a very select leading group.
02:32Some 40 or so riders.
02:34It would grow on the descent as well.
02:36And these were some of the names in there.
02:38Enric Mass had made it.
02:39Look at the number of Movistar riders there too.
02:42Problems for Derek G going over the top and starting the descent too.
02:46The Canadian having to drop off to have a bike change.
02:49I can tell you it would be costly.
02:52Arno De Lias, you've just seen flash up on the screen.
02:54Another of those who would not finish this stage.
02:57Still suffering with illness since the beginning.
02:58We were watching the chase behind.
03:00Jan Christen was winking to the cameras in the white there.
03:03Looking after that best young riders jersey for Guillermo Silva.
03:07And then we had the red ball sprint.
03:08Don't forget, 6-4 and 2 bonus seconds.
03:10And not only was Jan Christen winking, but he was winning.
03:13Picking up the six seconds there ahead of Giulio Pellizzari and Giulio Ciccone.
03:18Jan Christen, despite the fact that he's had a fair bit of time out with injury this season,
03:22looking very confident and enjoying his hero so far.
03:27Could he make it work at the finish?
03:29Well, this would be the group that would contest the finish as well.
03:31Some big names, fast names in there too.
03:34Had riders working for them.
03:35But Jan Christen wasn't going to wait to see whether the likes of Florian Stork,
03:40Ciccone and others could give it a go in the sprint because he was off.
03:43He took off by himself.
03:44And really, the response behind had to come from Movistar after all the work they'd done for this as well.
03:50Matteo Sobrero aiding that chase too.
03:52Luis Aula was locked in as well.
03:55The Venezuelan ready to sprint.
03:56Probably the best of the fast men in here.
03:58But Jonathan Naves was also sitting just a little bit further back.
04:01And you'd never underestimate Giulio Ciccone in a sprint like this.
04:04And that's how it went.
04:05Right across, spread across the road.
04:07But it was Jonathan Naves after being on the deck in the Tour Down Under at the beginning of this
04:11year.
04:12So much time out in a stage where we've seen two men who've been away with injury absolutely flying today.
04:18Jonathan Narvaez, the Ecuadorian taking the stage.
04:21There was the Malia Rosa coming in.
04:23We knew it would change hands.
04:25Guillermo Silva losing time today.
04:27But Jonathan Narvaez, he is back.
04:31Look at that.
04:32An Ecuadorian winner, a Venezuelan second place rider and a smiling Jonathan Narvaez.
04:37And what's been a tough week so far in this year for UAE team Emirates.
04:41Giulio Ciccone taking over the Malia Rosa.
04:44So the Italian fans will be happy.
04:48Point standings.
04:49Paul Magne in the Ciclamino jersey.
04:52Two stage wins to his name so far.
04:54And Diego Sevilla having a day off.
04:56Not in the breakaway today, but still with a very healthy lead in the King of the Mountains competition.
05:01Jan Christen now leads the best young riders jersey overall.
05:04Make sure you join us for tomorrow's stage between Praia and Mari and Potenza.
05:11See you next time.
