00:02Five months on from the Bondi Beach terror attack, safety fears within the Jewish community
00:08haven't abated.
00:09We would love to live in an Australia where no community was being targeted, but that's
00:15not the reality we have.
00:17The budget contains more than $600 million to tackle violent extremism, anti-Semitism
00:23and provide extra security.
00:25In addition to the $280 million already announced after the Bondi attack, the budget includes
00:32$141 million in new money to support Jewish organisations and the Bondi community.
00:38This one's above politics, so from my perspective it's very good that the federal government
00:42has provided some additional money for the grieving communities of New South Wales as we
00:46are recovering from the worst terror or atrocity in Australia.
00:49Jewish schools, sporting facilities and synagogues will be among those sharing in the new funding.
00:55For security infrastructure like fencing and blast proof doors, shatter proof windows, CCTV
01:02cameras and the like, quite frankly we would rather do without the money and not have an
01:08anti-Semitism problem.
01:09The Royal Commission has heard the Jewish community is having to spend an increasing amount of money
01:13for security and it's coming at the expense of core activities such as aged care and community
01:19outreach.
01:20The government says the budget will go some way to filling the funding gap.
01:24When we have to deal with hate speech, violence, real trauma going on on a daily basis to us
01:32and to our families, it distracts us from that work.
01:35We want to do that work again.
01:36A funding boost that's cold comfort for a community still in shock.
