JP, BMitch, and the aquarium debate the greatest number one overall pick of all time.
Transcript
00:00Washington Wizards got the number one overall pick
00:03in the upcoming NBA draft.
00:05A lot of conversation about A.J. DeBansa.
00:08I think he's kind of clearly the top pick here.
00:12Some folks are saying maybe he wants to stay in Utah.
00:16We'll see.
00:17I think one of the person that I respect
00:23maybe the most talking about basketball is David Aldridge.
00:28And David Aldridge tweeted after the lottery, he said,
00:30to say this is a seismic moment for the Wizards franchise,
00:33which has been utterly bereft for generations,
00:36is beyond understatement.
00:39Whether it's DeBansa or Peterson,
00:41at last, for the first time since peak wall,
00:45Washington will have a must-see player to build around.
00:48Super exciting.
00:49And we do our GOAT segment every Tuesday,
00:51and it got us thinking,
00:53should we do the GOATs of greatest number one picks ever?
00:57Yeah.
00:58Are we sticking to basketball since this is a basketball thing,
01:01or do you want to do all sports?
01:03I think it's all sports.
01:04All right.
01:06Now, I knew off the top of my head,
01:09Michael Jordan would be my answer to any GOAT debate.
01:12But he won the number one pick.
01:13No.
01:13He was the number three pick.
01:15That draft went Hakeem, Sam Bowie famously, and then MJ.
01:19Yeah.
01:21I did have to Google.
01:22Go pick Sam Bowie, kicking himself in the rear.
01:25I think Portland, right?
01:26Didn't Sam Bowie get drafted by the Blazers?
01:27Kicking himself in the butt.
01:28Now, I did Google this because I thought it was relevant for the debate
01:31because I don't know.
01:33I don't know in any.
01:35To me, MJ is the answer also.
01:37But I don't know in any sport that there's such a clear greatest of all time
01:41like there is in hockey.
01:42Gretzky.
01:43Gretzky wasn't drafted.
01:45He signed at 17 with a minor's team, and that's how he entered the NHL.
01:50So he was never drafted.
01:51So he's not part of this debate.
01:54They consider him a pick.
01:58I just looked it up.
01:59He wasn't drafted.
02:00So he's not part of this discussion.
02:02He wanted to play at a higher level.
02:04But the way it was set up back then, he signed with the World Hockey Association
02:14in 1978, and then they merged with the NHL in 1979.
02:20I think his contract got sold, basically.
02:25But back then, the NHL required players to be 20 years old.
02:30And Gretzky wanted – everybody knew he could play at that level.
02:33So this was the workaround to get him into the NHL at 17.
02:36So Gretzky wasn't drafted.
02:38MJ was drafted three.
02:40Neither of those players are part of this discussion.
02:43Now, we're doing this pretty broad, right?
02:45It's all sports.
02:47There are a lot of absolute stud number one picks across sports.
02:53Yeah.
02:54I don't know –
02:55We got one right here in town.
02:56Totally.
02:57Ovechkin.
02:57Hell yeah.
02:58Alex Ovechkin, all-time leading goal scorer in the NHL,
03:01has a Stanley Cup.
03:02The year after Ove was Sid Crosby, who was really good.
03:06Lemieux?
03:07I'm not going to look at – baseball probably won't get my answers here,
03:10but just in Washington, I mean, Strasburg and Harper were pretty damn good, man.
03:15Yeah.
03:16Pretty damn good.
03:17If you look all time at baseball, A-Rod was the number one overall pick in 1993.
03:23I was never really an A-Rod guy, but he's obviously –
03:26But he's a player.
03:26He's a fantastic player.
03:28And Ken Griffey Jr. was the number one pick.
03:31Smooth swing.
03:32Dude, he might be the smoothest, coolest baseball player ever.
03:37Like, when Griffey was cool, baseball –
03:39He plays golf just like that.
03:41It's gotten cool now, but Griffey, just when he would wear the backwards hat
03:45during batting practice was a big deal.
03:48You know what I mean?
03:50So, everybody gives their 3-2-1.
03:53This is hard, though.
03:55This is very, very hard.
03:56I think it comes down to basically what you like, you know,
04:00and I think that's the ultimate thing.
04:05I'll go.
04:06I'll give you people who I really consider since I'm going to throw a football player
04:11in there, and I'm going with LT as a football player, number three.
04:15All right.
04:16And then I'll jump number two.
04:17Lawrence Taylor.
04:18That's a good one, dude.
04:20I'll go number two.
04:21You can go either one.
04:25Pick through in there.
04:26Magic or Kareem.
04:28Which one are you picking?
04:29I'm picking Magic.
04:30Okay.
04:31Although Kareem was spectacular.
04:35And then, since he was a number one, and I'm going to give it to him, LeBron.
04:41Number one pick, came up with a lot of hype.
04:44He lived up to it.
04:46He absolutely did, man.
04:47All right.
04:48So, B.
04:48Mitch goes Lawrence Taylor.
04:50Since Gretzky won't be considered it.
04:53Because I look at that like, if everybody won him, he's the number one pick.
04:57No matter if he came a year, two, three years later, he was the pick.
05:01But, you know, go ahead.
05:03B.
05:03Mitch's list.
05:04Lawrence Taylor, Magic Johnson, LeBron James.
05:06Yeah.
05:07Hard to argue with.
05:08Can't miss that.
05:10White Brian.
05:11We'll go.
05:11We'll get.
05:12Both Bryans will go first.
05:13Somebody going to be from Auburn, watch.
05:16Bo Jackson?
05:17I'm going to give an honorable mention to Paul Skeens.
05:20It's a little early, but I think he's tracking to be an all-time great.
05:24And then with three, I'll go with Patrick Kane.
05:27Won three Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks.
05:30He's like an all-time dirtbag, isn't he?
05:33I think so, but he's an American.
05:34And he's considered one of the best American hockey players.
05:37So I'll put him there.
05:38That was a mouthful right there when he just stayed.
05:41Speaking of mouthful, I'm not sure how good Jeff's doing.
05:43But we'll get there.
05:46Dubby, Dubby, so far, Skeens, honorable mention.
05:50Patrick Kane, number three.
05:52All right?
05:52I'm going to stay with hockey and go Sidney Crosby, number two.
05:55Now you're just trolling, dog.
05:57And the best number one pick of all time, the team that drafted him,
06:01stayed there for 19 years, won five titles, Tim Duncan.
06:07Tim Duncan's a good one, dude.
06:10You know what?
06:10Many people by that thinking because he don't talk.
06:13But the dudes are badass.
06:15My favorite thing with Tim Duncan, you remember during the years with him,
06:18Tony Parker, and Manu?
06:20I mean, that team was just so fun to watch.
06:22But do you remember when Tony Parker would talk in the postgame?
06:25He says, I just throwed the ball to a team because he had that friend Jackson.
06:28I always love that, dude.
06:31Let's check in with Jeff Walker.
06:34Jeff, one, how are you feeling, pal?
06:36Because there's a lot of spitting going on in there.
06:39I am good.
06:41I feel it a little bit, but I already spit a lot.
06:46And this is just making my mouth salivate more.
06:49Okay.
06:51That's part of the plan.
06:52My goats.
06:53Your goats.
06:54I'm going to have to go with Shaq.
06:57I'm going to go with Shaq.
06:59Shaq at three?
07:00I don't order.
07:01Shaq.
07:02They need to be in order, dog.
07:03All right.
07:04Because White Bryant took one of my ones.
07:06So I'm going to go Tim at three.
07:09Shaq at one.
07:10I mean, Shaq at two.
07:12And I got to go Magic.
07:14I got to go Magic at one.
07:16Okay.
07:18All good lists, man.
07:20I mean, it's your list.
07:23Right.
07:23Jameis.
07:26Stallion.
07:27This is going to be a tough one.
07:29I'm going to go local guy.
07:32Number three, Alex Ovechkin.
07:33All-time goal-scored leader in the NHL.
07:36Champion.
07:38Hero.
07:39The guy's a legend.
07:40Number three.
07:40Lived up to the hype.
07:41Number two, LeBron James.
07:44All that hype back in the day.
07:46He's lived up to it.
07:48Sports Illustrated in high school.
07:49In high school.
07:51And it's really only been like LeBron and Bryce Harper who have done that.
07:54And both of the guys have lived up to the expectations.
07:56But LeBron has outpaced Bryce by a significant margin.
08:00By far.
08:00LeBron is legit in the discussion of greatest basketball player ever.
08:03Bryce isn't in that conversation.
08:04Yeah.
08:05And LeBron's like one of the greatest athletes of all time.
08:07If not the best.
08:09So he's up in that conversation as well.
08:11And then number one, this is my guy.
08:14Ken Griffey Jr.
08:15I love that man.
08:17Growing up, I watched him play with the Reds.
08:20Then he went back to the Mariners.
08:22I saw the back end of his career.
08:23But his swing, nothing smoother than that thing in sports.
08:26I love Ken Griffey Jr.
08:28All right.
08:28Phone lives are open.
08:29800-636-1067.
08:31800-636-1067.
08:34Who's the greatest number one pick ever in any sport?
08:38This is a hard one, dude.
08:39Because we're talking all sports all over the place.
08:43B, I had to look this up.
08:46We have a problem.
08:47What?
08:48With your list.
08:49What?
08:50LT went number two overall.
08:53I thought he went one.
08:54No.
08:55George Rogers went one.
08:58I'll switch it then.
09:00Okay.
09:01Now I'm not going football.
09:03It's hard for me to say Peyton because Tom kicked his ass all the time.
09:07And he was a six-round pick.
09:08Seven-round pick.
09:08Whatever it was.
09:11So, Peyton did get two rings.
09:13The second ring, I mean, that defense carrier.
09:15That one ring, you and I would have got that ring.
09:17You, maybe.
09:18Probably not me.
09:19You could have.
09:19You could have.
09:20He best of stood around like all of us would have been doing.
09:24There is a defensive end that went one overall.
09:27Oh, man.
09:27It's kicking in now.
09:29Oh, let's check in on Jeff.
09:31I'm going to go with – I'm just going to slide that thing over and go with –
09:36You can go Kareem there.
09:37You mentioned Kareem.
09:37Yeah, I'm going Kareem.
09:38Okay.
09:41Got to do a bunch of honorable mentions because this is like our most loaded category ever.
09:46Phone lines are open.
09:47800-636-1067.
09:49800-636-1067.
09:52If you want to weigh in with your greatest number one pick of all time.
09:55Before I get my list, let's check in with Jeff Walker.
09:57Jeffrey, how are you?
09:58How are you, sir?
09:59Oh, I'm good.
10:00But I feel a little spacey, like loopy a little bit.
10:04Yeah, you're starting to slur.
10:05You're starting to slur.
10:06No, that's just these things in my mouth.
10:11Did he say that out loud?
10:13He paused himself, though.
10:14I'll give him credit.
10:15I feel jumpy a little bit now.
10:18Nothing in your stomach or anything?
10:19No, my stomach don't hurt.
10:20Okay, good.
10:22All right.
10:23So best number one picks ever.
10:29Payton is the one that comes to mind for me.
10:32But I look some of this up.
10:35John Elway was the number one overall pick.
10:37People call it the Eli when you refuse to play for a team.
10:40Elway did that first.
10:42Yeah.
10:42Elway refused to play for the Colts.
10:44Got traded to the Broncos.
10:46Went to five Super Bowls.
10:48One, two.
10:50I didn't realize this.
10:51Terry Bradshaw was the number one overall pick.
10:54Terry Bradshaw's got four Super Bowl rings.
10:57Mm-hmm.
10:58Now, that team was loaded, loaded.
11:00Yeah.
11:00But many people believe that they won in spite of.
11:05That defense was spectacular.
11:07I mean, think about.
11:09And Lance Swann was climbing the damn wall to go get him.
11:11Lance Allworth was on that team, right?
11:14Who's the running back?
11:15The Italian team, Franco Harris.
11:17I mean, those teams were loaded.
11:20Troy Aikman was the number one overall pick.
11:23Mm-hmm.
11:24Jeff couldn't believe that one.
11:25I mean, they won three Super Bowls.
11:27Jeff, you didn't know that Troy Aikman went number one coming out of UCLA?
11:30I didn't.
11:31Yeah.
11:31Yeah, so Troy Aikman started his career at Oklahoma,
11:39and I think he and Barry Switzer didn't like each other,
11:41and then he transferred to UCLA.
11:43I think I have that right.
11:44I was like six years old at the time.
11:47But Bruce Smith was the guy I was thinking of.
11:49If you wanted a DN, Bruce Smith was the number one overall pick
11:52out of Virginia Tech.
11:53Yeah.
11:53I wouldn't put him in that conversation.
11:55No, I'm not doing that.
11:57Hockey, obviously, you've got Ovi, you've got Sid Crosby,
12:00you've got Patrick Kane.
12:01I appreciate White Bryant bringing that to our attention.
12:06I'm curious, elsewhere in MLB, like, when did MLB get a draft?
12:11Because I can't imagine, like, Babe Ruth was drafted.
12:13You know what I mean?
12:14Mm-hmm.
12:16Daryl Strawberry was the number one overall pick.
12:19Mm-hmm.
12:19David Price played for the Rays was really good.
12:25But for my list, personally, I'm going to go Peyton at number three.
12:33He was phenomenal.
12:35He really modernized a lot of NFL offenses.
12:38I know he didn't have the playoff success.
12:40He did win the one Super Bowl.
12:42They lost another one.
12:43Then he won the other one with Denver.
12:46I think they lost...
12:47Is Peyton's all-time Super Bowl record two and two?
12:50Does that sound right?
12:51Because they lost the one to the Saints when he was with the Colts.
12:54Then when he was with the Colts, they beat the Bears.
12:56They lost the one to the Seahawks when he was with the Broncos.
12:59And then they won one against the Panthers with the Broncos.
13:02So I got Peyton at two and two at Super Bowls.
13:04Yep.
13:06It's my list, so I don't care.
13:08I'm going Ovi at number two.
13:11Now, here's what's really, really difficult.
13:15To have the appropriate level of respect and history of basketball,
13:20you probably have to say Kareem.
13:24Kareem's a six-time MVP, six-time champ.
13:27I think he won one with the Bucs as soon as he got to Milwaukee
13:31and then obviously had all that success in L.A. with the Lakers.
13:34You also have Magic.
13:36Magic.
13:37Had five rings, but I believe all five of those came with Kareem.
13:42So clearly that's a loaded team.
13:46Magic, he was the straw that stirred the drink, though.
13:50Yeah, absolutely.
13:52Magic revolutionized basketball.
13:53All the people that are part of this conversation to me
13:56have to be considered revolutionary.
14:01But for me, with LeBron, the longevity of the career,
14:07how good he's been throughout his career,
14:09I'm going to go LeBron, number one.
14:11So just running through all the lists, I went Peyton, Ovi, LeBron.
14:16Stallion went Ovi, LeBron, Griffey.
14:18Jeff went Duncan, Shaq, Magic.
14:21White Brian went Kane, Crosby, Duncan.
14:24B. Mitch went Kareem, Magic, LeBron.
14:27Our guy Shane is on the line.
14:29Shane, who's your GOAT of number one picks?
14:32Rocky top your wall.
14:34It's got to be Peyton Manning, dude.
14:37It's got to be, first of all, good morning, fellas.
14:38It don't have to be for you, Shane.
14:41You can't tell me what it has to be for me.
14:43I know what you're saying.
14:44Then I got number two, Shaquille.
14:46He changed the game.
14:47You got to have Shaq number two.
14:49And I'm with you, B. Mitch.
14:51I got to put in, I like A-Rod, but it's got to be Shaq number two
14:57and Peyton number one.
14:59And then number three, I would have to say, like I said,
15:03I got to have Ken Griffey.
15:05Ken Griffey did the pretty swing in baseball.
15:08Yeah, man.
15:08He was swinging.
15:09Thanks for the call, Shane.
15:10Appreciate you, bud.
15:11Yeah.
15:12If we were doing just football, who would you say be?
15:16Just football?
15:17Well, I have to look closer.
15:21If it's just football, to me, it's Peyton or Elway.
15:25People sleep on Elway.
15:26Elway was bad as hell, man.
15:28I like guys that can move.
15:30Yeah.
15:30And Elway was able to move.
15:35I think football's really hard between Peyton and Elway.
15:42Aikman kind of has a place in that conversation.
15:45Like, if we're talking Peyton and Elway, Aikman has more rings than both of them.
15:48But if we're knocking Terry Bradshaw for how loaded that team was, those Cowboy teams were
15:52unbelievable.
15:53They were loaded.
15:54Unbelievable.
15:54O.J. Simpson.
15:55Was he number one overall?
15:57I never watched O.J.
15:58How smooth was his game?
16:00Obviously, things happen later.
16:01But what was he like as a player?
16:03You got to go back and watch these old players, JP.
16:08Get him, Jeff.
16:09Get him, Jeff.
16:10I do think Jeff's kind of dying in there.
16:12How's it going in there, Jeff?
16:13It is.
16:14No, it's this, like, I don't like this.
16:17It's like a, my stomach don't hurt, but this lightheaded feeling is just weird.
16:23That's a part of it, Jeff.
16:23You're trying to get through the segment, right?
16:25You're going to get to 20?
16:26Oh, no.
16:27I just got to get through the segment so we can do the EAS test on time.
16:29Oh, God.
16:30I don't want to do that.
16:32Yo, if you're in your car, be prepared for an EAS test.
16:35Those are brutal.
16:35They are.
16:38None of us mentioned Hakeem Olajuwon.
16:41Real question for you, B.
16:43Yep.
16:43If MJ didn't take the two-year, uh-oh, uh-oh.
16:47I think, oh, boy.
16:49Jeff just had to leave the aquarium.
16:52I think he might be headed to the bathroom.
16:54Or the trash can.
16:56Oh, Jeff is booting right now the trash can.
16:59Stalia, get the content, baby.
17:02Put that on social.
17:05Oh, dude.
17:05Can you hear that?
17:06Don't you tell him sometimes he needs to just learn how to listen to people?
17:13You got to learn to listen to folks sometimes instead of just thinking, I can get through everything.
17:18We're going to sneak another call in here.
17:19I am a hero.
17:20Hear me roar.
17:21Hey, Jones, who's your one seed of number one picks?
17:25I believe I'm a techie.
17:28Oh, Jeff.
17:29All right, I'm putting him on hold.
17:30He's clearly listening to his radio.
17:32He listens to the show.
17:33Is Jeff back?
17:35Jeff, you a lot?
17:36Oh, no.
17:36Jeff is leading.
17:37Oh, dude.
17:38Jeff is going back.
17:40Yo, Jeff.
17:41Jeff is so cocky.
17:43It did not serve him well right now.
17:44Hey, that's what cockiness gets you.
17:46We're going to keep the phone lines open for the rest of the hour.
17:49Who's the number one pick of all time?
17:51Any sport.
17:54Any sport.
17:55Any sport.
