00:22Thank you so much for joining us.
00:38Thank you so much for joining us.
01:03Hello.
01:04Hello.
01:05I'm good.
01:06How are you?
01:07Great.
01:07Looking good, please.
01:09Thank you for having me.
01:10Welcome to the program.
01:12Thank you for being here.
01:14No, it's an honor.
01:15Thank you so much.
01:15When was the last time you spoke to each other?
01:18A long time ago.
01:19A long time ago.
01:20Lola.
01:21Yeah.
01:22A long time ago.
01:23Yeah.
01:23A long time ago.
01:25How are you?
01:26I'm great.
01:27I'm excited.
01:28I have a lot of great things happening.
01:29I know.
01:30You have a concert.
01:30It's a nice Saturday.
01:32Yes.
01:32May 16th at the Araneta.
01:34I'm very excited.
01:36May 16th at the Araneta Coliseum.
01:38Yeah.
01:38It will come Saturday.
01:40You cannot miss that concert.
01:43Every time you come home, do you understand a little bit of Tagalog?
01:46I'm learning with my daughter.
01:48Okay.
01:48Good.
01:49Every time you come home to the Philippines, what is that feeling like?
01:53Oh, it feels like comfort.
01:55You know, coming home.
01:55I feel like this is my second home.
01:58I was born in the States, but everybody here is so welcoming.
02:01And especially having my grandparents here in Bataan, it feels like warm and welcoming.
02:06And if I remember correctly, you know, with American Idol, a lot of international sing
02:12contests, was it you who originated the brilliant Filipino singer thing in the mind
02:22of, you know, really of the world?
02:24It was you, right?
02:25I don't know.
02:26I don't know.
02:27That sounds really...
02:28It was, I think, Jessica.
02:31Yeah.
02:31I've been doing this for a very long time.
02:33I know.
02:34And I honestly try to stay out of, like, social, like, reading comments and social media
02:38because I want to kind of stay, you know, grounded as much as possible.
02:42So, that means a lot.
02:44Yeah.
02:44And you had the whole country just rooting for you.
02:48I remember that.
02:48I didn't miss a single episode of American Idol.
02:52It's true.
02:54I don't know how to relate.
02:55Your mother is from Samal Bataan.
02:58Mm-hmm.
02:59Do you see your relatives every time you come?
03:01Not every time.
03:02Not every time.
03:03Yeah, not every time.
03:03But have you been there?
03:04Yes, I have.
03:05Yeah, I've been there.
03:06And it's, like I said, my grandma, she would always make food when I go there.
03:11And just kind of, you know, open the home to, like, sleep over.
03:14And it's, it's really, like, nice to just go and see where I'm, where my roots are from.
03:18Are you going, are they going to watch your concert?
03:20Yes.
03:21Lola is going to go and watch your concert.
03:22Yes.
03:23I'm so excited.
03:24That's really nice.
03:26Jessica, um, just tell me if you don't understand.
03:30But when it comes to the ugali, the traits, characteristics, what is Pinoy about you?
03:36Mmm.
03:36I feel like there's a lot of Filipino traits and tendencies that I do have.
03:40I do, like, the Filipino squat a lot.
03:44Or when I eat, I have, like, one leg up on the chair.
03:48Yes.
03:49Sometimes I do.
03:50Like, when I was younger, my grandmother would, you know, have me eat with my hands.
03:54So sometimes I have the habit of just, like, eating with my hands.
03:57Sometimes.
03:58Sometimes.
03:59Yeah.
03:59Very, very Pinoy traits.
04:01Yes.
04:02Your favorite Filipino song?
04:03Oh.
04:04You know, actually, one that means a lot to me is Ikao.
04:07Oh.
04:07Because my grandma showed me that song.
04:10And she taught me that song.
04:11Okay.
04:11She, like, studied it with me.
04:12She's like, I'm gonna teach you how to sing this.
04:14Beautiful song.
04:15I'm not gonna make you sing, but I'm gonna teach you how to sing.
04:17Okay.
04:17But you don't have to sing.
04:19Where's my song?
04:20I do this to everyone.
04:24Ooh.
04:24Maybe I'm gonna sing this song?
04:26Yeah.
04:26Daron, daron, sinta.
04:28Buko ng papaya.
04:31Buko ng papaya.
04:34Daladalay buslo.
04:37Daladalay buslo.
04:39Sissydla ng bunga.
04:41Medyo mataas kailuorosa.
04:43Turungan mo ako ng bunga.
04:47Sissydla ng...
04:48Dala...
04:49Dala...
04:50Dala...
05:00You know, I'm so bad.
05:01I'm sorry.
05:03That was a duet right there.
05:06That was fun.
05:08I make everybody sing this song, but I can't manage singing that song.
05:12How do you take care of your voice?
05:13Oh, I do a lot now.
05:15I nebulize, I steam, I have to get like nine hours of sleep,
05:20which is very hard being a new mom, you know, getting to sleep.
05:25Yeah, so there's a lot of tips and tricks that I have.
05:27So before a concert, before you sing, you have that ritual.
05:31Yes, now I do.
05:32Before, when I was younger on Idol, I would just be like,
05:34I don't need to warm up, I'm just going to go and sing
05:37because of the Filipino in us, you know, the Filipino blood.
05:41You know, I had a lot of conversations with singers here and abroad,
05:45and some would, you know, vocalize, others would actually jog.
05:50Others would actually do stretching, you know, so you would nebulize?
05:55Yeah, nebulize to kind of like...
05:56What does it do?
05:57It opens your...
05:58Yeah, so it moisturizes the vocal cords.
06:01Yeah, I think after I gave birth, there was like huge hormonal shift in my body,
06:06so that affects my vocal cords, so I have to stay on top of my hydration.
06:12Okay, 20th anniversary of America's Got Talent.
06:15You were there, buntis, do you understand?
06:18You were pregnant.
06:19Yes.
06:19You were...
06:19How challenging was that?
06:21Oh, immensely challenging.
06:22Yeah, I actually don't know how I did that.
06:26I think it was the Lord's hand on me that helped me bring out the voice,
06:30or maybe my daughter was kicking out the notes because it was very hard.
06:34What were you told?
06:35Is it harder to sing when you're pregnant?
06:37I think I've heard that it depends on certain people.
06:40For me, she was right up against my diaphragm, so I really...
06:45Usually, you know, I could sing, you know, a concert worth of songs and be good.
06:49When I was on AGT, I could literally only sing one song and be done
06:53because it was so much breath that I had to kind of find in my body.
06:58What has motherhood done to you?
07:02Oh, it's changed me completely.
07:04My mindset, the way that I love, the way that I, you know, spend my time.
07:10My daughter means everything to me.
07:12She is my world.
07:14And I would give anything up for her, you know, my career, everything that I've worked for.
07:18I just, I want to be the best example for her.
07:20And I think that's why I did AGT, you know, to kind of be an example for her,
07:25to keep fighting for her dreams.
07:26Yeah, and it really changes your whole perspective about, like, how are you raising her similarly
07:33or differently from the way you were raised by your parents, especially your Filipino mother?
07:39Yes, so I am Filipino-Mexican, but I feel like I...
07:42That's right, you're done.
07:43Yes, yeah, but, you know, my grandma, I was always, like, at the Filipino parties.
07:47I think I was a lot more in touch with my Filipino culture growing up because of my grandparents.
07:52So, you know, my daughter's still six months old.
07:55She's still kind of young, but I'm excited to have her here in the Philippines for the first time.
07:59And I hope that, you know, I can slowly start teaching her, you know, some of the Filipino culture,
08:04even, you know, while she's here.
08:06At six months, do you actually get indications that she's going to go into music?
08:12Does she hum?
08:13Oh my gosh, you know what, I just, I did a video on Instagram of singing Risk It All by
08:18Bruna Mars,
08:18and she was not letting me sing.
08:20She just kept shouting.
08:21I think she wanted to do a duet.
08:23I think she wanted to sing with me.
08:25Okay, she's just going to go into that.
08:27I want to go back to 2012, when you were with American Idol.
08:31And kami, lahat ko tayo dito sa Pilipinas, we wanted you to win.
08:37You were our winner.
08:38And when you came out first runner-up, we were disappointed, were you?
08:43No, I was not disappointed.
08:45I mean, coming, I actually came to the Philippines for the first time after Idol.
08:49And that was, I didn't realize how much support I had out here.
08:52It was, it was insane.
08:54But I was just so proud of myself being so young, being a Filipino, young American woman,
09:00making that, making it that far.
09:02To second place was, was pretty, pretty far along.
09:05But I'm really proud of myself for kind of taking that leap of faith and joining AGT this last season
09:10and really taking home the crown, you know, after such a long time.
09:14I know.
09:14Yeah.
09:15Yeah, but I totally understand that.
09:17But where we are coming from was that we wanted you to be our winner.
09:20Of course, I love Philip Phillips, but he was good-looking enough to.
09:28I love Philip Phillips.
09:28But we wanted you, Jessica, because I was just to win.
09:30Oh, thank you.
09:31You know, that's what the whole country wanted to happen.
09:33Thank you, thank you.
09:33But you're right.
09:3420 years after the first season of America's Got Talent, you auditioned.
09:39Yeah.
09:40And then I liked it when you said, you know, I'm back here after 20 years.
09:46Yes.
09:46Take me back to that moment.
09:48Yeah, because.
09:48What was it like?
09:49I actually was on AGT the first season when I was 10 years old.
09:53So this was the 20th season.
09:54I came back 20 years later.
09:56And, you know, even after Idol, so many trials and tribulations throughout my career.
10:01And I've been on this journey with the Internet, the whole Internet watching.
10:05So it really meant a lot, not only to me, but I felt like to my supporters and fans to
10:09see me kind of get out there and just take another, like I said, leap of faith to try again.
10:15No, we were with you.
10:16Yes.
10:17We were with you.
10:17We were praying.
10:19We were with you.
10:20I would not.
10:20I would not have been able to have won without the support of the Filipino people, without the support of
10:25the Philippines.
10:26So I am always trying to find time and find words to express how grateful I am for all of
10:32the love and support.
10:33And that's why I'm so excited to be doing this concert, this homecoming concert.
10:37It's coming Saturday.
10:37It's May 16, Aranera Coliseum.
10:40When you finally won in America's Got Talent, what was that?
10:44What was it like?
10:45Oh, my gosh.
10:46Yeah.
10:47Yeah.
10:47You know, I don't like to use the word vindication, but, you know, was it like, this is it?
10:53Yes, I was crying on stage because I was like, wow, this is like, I was just thinking of, even
10:59before they announced me as the winner, I was thinking of my 10-year-old self as I looked out
11:02in the crowd.
11:03And I was like, wow, I was like, wow, I've really fought for this moment.
11:06And whatever happens, happens.
11:08And then they said my name.
11:09And I was like, wow, God, thank you for, you know, putting me through this.
11:13And it was hard, but we came out on top.
11:16And then, you know, a week and a half later, I gave birth.
11:19So, mom mode.
11:21Blessing.
11:22Double blessing.
11:23Double blessing.
11:23You know, right now, Matty Hunyosa is a back-to-back golden buzzer on Britain's Got Talent.
11:30You know, I was looking on YouTube.
11:31I was trying to find out if I did an interview with Matty.
11:33Yes, I did.
11:35I did an interview with Matty.
11:36And he is about to compete in the finals.
11:39If you were to give him a piece of advice, what would that be?
11:44I feel like Matty is doing great.
11:46I think he's performing so well.
11:48And I think he's representing the Filipinos so well on Britain's Got Talent.
11:52So, I don't really have much advice.
11:54I would say, you know, just stay confident and secure in who you are as an artist.
11:58And I know you're going to kill it and take home the crown for us Filipinos again in Britain's Got
12:03Talent.
12:03I would love that.
12:04I would love to have another champion.
12:06I actually performed with Sophrano the other night.
12:08Yes.
12:09Yes.
12:09Vasquez, yes.
12:10Yes, yeah.
12:11No, but Jessica, take us to that moment.
12:13When you are on stage and then you're standing there and you're about to sing and you know that millions
12:21of people are watching, what do you say?
12:26I mean, what do you actually tell yourself?
12:30Yeah, you know, it's very stressful.
12:31And I can tell you, you know, I was nine months pregnant.
12:34I was very stressed.
12:35But I had to learn to kind of breathe through it and tell myself, you know what, I made it
12:39this far.
12:40And whatever the Lord has for me, let it be his will.
12:43Do you do that internal monologue?
12:45Definitely, yes.
12:45I mean, do you say, Jessica, you know, boy, this is your moment.
12:48I mean, do you actually talk to yourself?
12:50Yeah, you know, I do.
12:51And I also pray.
12:52I'm like, Lord, please, like, just ease me.
12:56Give me the peace that only you can give me.
12:58And I'm just trusting what you have in store for me.
13:01And I feel like, you know, he's always delivered more than I can ever ask or think.
13:05And I feel like his hand is over, you know, the Filipino people as well with our talent and us
13:09kind of coming, you know, out of nowhere in all of these, you know, platforms, kind of showing up and
13:16showing out all these talents.
13:17We have been, Carlo and I have been in this music business for a long, long time.
13:22And at a certain point, I was, I had this, I had this idea that it was formidable, it was
13:31almost impossible to break into the American music business.
13:36Today, how easy, how difficult is it?
13:41I feel like it is, it's still a little difficult because, you know, it's so saturated.
13:46There's so many people trying to, you know, get into, to break into, especially in America.
13:52But we do have, you know, amazing artists, you know, who are Filipino Americans, yes, that are like representing for
13:59our people.
14:00So that makes me very, very proud.
14:01And it also makes me proud to represent, you know, myself.
14:05Does it make it easier?
14:06I mean, you know, we listed names here.
14:08Bruno, first name basis.
14:10Bruno Mars, Olivia Rodrigo, her, you know, we have Saweetie and even Sofia.
14:17Yeah.
14:17La Fortez of Cat's Eye.
14:18I mean, having, having these Filipino American artists, I mean, that, does that make life easier?
14:26Definitely.
14:27We've come a long way since, you know, the past.
14:30When I was younger, you know, I would get discriminated against.
14:33They would tell me, oh yeah, no, you can't do this kind of music or that kind of music or
14:36be on this platform because you're not the race that we're looking for.
14:40But now, you know, I actually find, you know, producers.
14:43Did you get this in your face?
14:45I mean, would you agree?
14:46Yes, yeah, definitely.
14:47Yeah, you know, it was very blunt and straightforward.
14:49And I was so young, so, but it's okay.
14:52You know, like I said, we've come so far.
14:53And now, actually, I hear producers in TV places talking about how they are looking for Filipino faces.
14:59Mabuhay.
15:00That's right.
15:01Mabuhay.
15:02A couple of questions.
15:03One, if you can name your top three best Filipino singers, who are they?
15:09In 2019, you stayed here for a while.
15:12And one of the reasons is that you were working on your citizenship.
15:16What happened to that?
15:17What is the status?
15:18Ang mga kasagutan po sa pagbabalik ng Fast Talk with Boy Abul.
15:31We're back on the show.
15:33Kasama po natin, Jessica Sanchez.
15:35Jessica, let's do Fast Talk.
15:37Okay.
15:38Okay.
15:39American Idol or America's Got Talent?
15:42Oh, America's Got Talent.
15:43Beyonce, Whitney.
15:44Oh, Whitney.
15:46Whitney or Mariah?
15:47Oh, Whitney.
15:48Whitney or Regine?
15:49Oh, no, Regine.
15:51OPM or American Music?
15:53Oh, OPM.
15:54Pop, R&B?
15:55R&B.
15:56Bulong or Birit?
15:58Birit.
15:59Only rice, no rice?
16:01No, yeah, rice.
16:02Yes, rice.
16:03Adobo, sinigang?
16:05Sinigang.
16:05Karaoke night or date night?
16:07Oh, date night.
16:08Your go-to karaoke song?
16:10Oh, I Will Always Love You.
16:11Your favorite Tagalog word?
16:13Oh, mahal kita.
16:14Say this word.
16:18Nakakapagpabagabag.
16:20Nakakapagpagpagpagpagpagpagpagpagpagpagpagpagpagpag.
16:21Very good.
16:23Okay.
16:24Pitompot pito.
16:26Pitompot puto.
16:27Very good.
16:29Sinichiwa ite.
16:31Sinichiwa ate.
16:34Chuwariwap.
16:36Chuwariwap.
16:36Very good.
16:38Yes or no?
16:39Googled yourself?
16:40No.
16:41Yes or no?
16:42Fangirled over an artist?
16:43Yes.
16:44Yes or no?
16:45Dated a Filipino?
16:46Eh, no.
16:47Rikki, forgive me for that question.
16:50No.
16:51No.
16:51Yes or no?
16:51Cracked your voice during a performance?
16:53Oh, yes.
16:54Lights on or lights off?
16:55Lights off.
16:57Happiness or chocolates?
16:58Oh, chocolates.
16:59Best time for chocolates?
17:01Every day.
17:02I'm proud to be a Filipino because...
17:04Of the people.
17:06Oh, yeah.
17:09Jessica, since the last time we've spoken, we talked to each other.
17:12What do you know about love for sure right now?
17:16Oh, for sure.
17:17I believe that love more than anything is a choice.
17:20I feel like codependency is always connected to love, but I feel like when you choose to
17:26love somebody, that is true love.
17:27Because it's hard to love somebody sometimes.
17:30So when you choose to get over those hard times, I feel like that's genuine love.
17:33Kayo ni Rikki, you were together for like a couple of years before you decided to get
17:37married.
17:38Naalala ko pa yung kwento, nagkita kayo sa simbahan.
17:40You married...
17:41Is that right?
17:42Yes.
17:42Okay.
17:43So I got that right.
17:452019, nandito ka sa Pilipinas.
17:47We were fixing your papers because your citizenship.
17:50Yeah.
17:51The idea that we got was you wanted to work on your citizenship.
17:56Yes.
17:56Ano ang status nito?
17:57Yeah, I really wanted to come out here and kind of be out here a lot more, you know,
18:02in the music industry.
18:04But I kind of lost myself in music for a while.
18:07And also, you know, my grandmother was helping me, but she unfortunately passed not too long
18:11ago.
18:12So, you know, it kind of got lost.
18:14My condolences.
18:15I didn't know.
18:16Okay.
18:16Because she was very, very nice to us.
18:18Yeah, she's the greatest.
18:19Yeah.
18:20Okay.
18:20So you weren't able to take care of that because you became very busy also.
18:24Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:24All right.
18:25Life just hit me.
18:26Okay.
18:27You're doing this concert, but before the concert, if you were to name three of your best Filipino
18:31singers, who are they?
18:33Oh, oh my goodness.
18:35I love Regine.
