00:01This dramatic rescue all unfolded around 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at North Melbourne
00:06Railway Station. Now the boy who's a Year 7 student at the nearby St Aloysius College
00:12was on platform 6 when somehow it's been hit by a train and become trapped underneath
00:16a carriage. Now emergency services were quick to respond but it was a very complex and difficult
00:22operation to actually free the boy as he was trapped by his leg. So they've had to bring
00:26in hydraulic jacks to actually lift the train off the tracks in order to free him. The whole
00:31operation has taken about an hour. As I said it was a very busy time of the day, 4 o
00:36'clock
00:36in the afternoon, you've got school children around, a lot of people commuting home from
00:40work at that time as well. So a very distressing situation for a lot of people to witness.
00:45The operation taking about an hour, the boy was then taken to the Royal Children's Hospital
00:49in a critical condition at that time. His condition has improved overnight and he's now listed as
00:55serious but stable. So here's how Jordan Emery, the CEO of Ambulance Victoria, described the
01:01situation on ABC News Breakfast this morning. The exact circumstances of that are still the
01:06subject of a police investigation but when our paramedics arrived on scene that young male had
01:12very, very serious injuries. It was a remarkable multi-agency response to save that child's life
01:20and get them to the Royal Children's Hospital. And St. Aloysius College Principal, Mary Farrer,
01:25has also issued a statement overnight writing to the school community saying that in times of such
01:30sudden and distressing news, the strength of our college family is more important than ever. I know
01:36that your thoughts and compassion will be with the student and their family as they face this
01:40incredibly difficult time. So as I said, the boy was taken into critical condition late yesterday
01:46to hospital. He's now in a serious but stable condition. So an improvement in his condition
01:51overnight. And as for commuters, there were some delays late yesterday but the train's running
01:56as usual this morning. As I said, thoughts are, with the boy and his family begins this difficult recovery.
