00:00Which major U.S. city has the worst geographic location?
00:03Many say it's New Orleans.
00:04The city is surrounded by water from almost every side,
00:07Lake Pontchartrain to the north,
00:08the Mississippi River through the region,
00:10and the Gulf of Mexico nearby,
00:12bringing powerful hurricanes.
00:13What makes it even worse is that around 65% of the city
00:16lies below sea level,
00:18with some areas nearly two meters lower.
00:20New Orleans is basically built like a giant bowl,
00:23making floods extremely dangerous.
00:25Without levees and pumping systems,
00:27much of the city could disappear underwater.
00:29But the French originally built it there
00:30because the location controlled major trade routes
00:33connecting North America to the sea.
