00:01With a bang of a gavel, the Philippines' lower house votes to impeach Vice President
00:06Sarah Duterte. It's her second impeachment, but this time it might stick, opening the way
00:11for a Senate trial. That could bar her from office for life, dashing presidential ambitions
00:17for 2028. She's accused of misuse of public money, corruption, and threats against figures
00:23including former ally, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. She says none of this is true,
00:28and that this is political persecution. But anti-Duterte protesters don't believe her.
00:34This is an important first step towards achieving accountability for the different crimes that
00:38the Vice President has been accused of, for crimes involving the corruption of confidential
00:43and intelligence funds, involving the threats of violence and death against high officials
00:47of the land. Back inside the lower chamber, proceedings are calm and orderly, but that
00:53will soon be tested. As recently as March, pollster W.R. Numero found that 36% of Filipinos
01:00would vote for Cero Duterte, far ahead of the nearest rival.
01:05But it isn't just Cero Duterte's future at risk. Her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte,
01:10is in The Hague, facing trial for crimes against humanity during a violent crackdown on drugs.
01:15And now, an ally and enforcer, Senator and former police chief Ronald De La Rosa is a wanted man too.
01:22The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him on Monday.
01:27Mr. De La Rosa is alleged to have committed the crime against humanity of murder at least between
01:33the 3rd of July 2016 and the end of April 2018, during which no less than 32 persons were killed
01:42in the Republic of the Philippines.
01:45De La Rosa says he was not involved in illegal killings, but he ran from agents to his Senate office
01:52and has since been put under protective custody. In the space of a day, the Philippines' political arena
01:57felt two big jolts. And with Cero Duterte's career still on the line and De La Rosa's future unresolved,
02:04there's a chance of more shocks ahead for the country. Chris Ma and John Van Trieste for Taiwan Plus.
02:12What's fair?
02:13So let's think.
