00:00The International Criminal Court has affirmed its jurisdiction over former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
00:06The Appeals Chamber's ruling dismisses the former leader's bid to throw up the case over his alleged role in the
00:13killing of thousands during the country's war on drugs.
00:19Duterte has been held in detention in The Hague since his arrest in March 2025 and was not present when
00:26the ruling was delivered.
00:27His legal team had argued that the Philippines' withdrawal from the ICC in 2018 stripped the court of jurisdiction.
00:34However, judges ruled that a preliminary examination had already begun before the withdrawal, allowing the court to retain authority over
00:42the case and rejecting demands for his release.
00:45Prosecutors accused Duterte of creating, funding and arming death squads responsible for the killing of thousands during his presidency from
00:542016 to 2022.
00:56Duterte has denied the allegations, saying he only authorized police to use force in self-defense.
