00:01U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to work to restore his country's faith in the Labour Party following devastating
00:08local election results last week.
00:11That includes getting closer to the European Union, he said in a post-election speech on Monday, a decade after
00:17the U.K. voted to leave the EU.
00:19For Britain, the last government was defined by breaking our relationship with Europe. This Labour government will be defined by
00:29rebuilding our relationship with Europe, by putting Britain at the heart of Europe.
00:34So that we are stronger on the economy, stronger on trade, stronger on defence, you may need. Because standing shoulder
00:43to shoulder with the countries that most share our interests, our values and our enemies, that is the right choice
00:52for Britain.
00:53Starmer's popularity has plummeted since the Labour Party won the general election in a landslide less than two years ago,
00:59but he continued to fight off demands to step down.
01:02This is nothing less than a battle for the soul of our nation. And I want to be crystal clear
01:09about how we will win it. Because we cannot win as a weaker version of reform or the Greens. We
01:17can only win as a stronger version of Labour, a mainstream party of power, not protest.
01:24Starmer hopes to regain momentum with Monday's speech and an ambitious set of legislative plans to be set out in
01:30a speech on Wednesday by King Charles at the state opening of Parliament.
