00:02Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has won in North West England the key Makerfield by-election in the UK,
00:08paving the way for him to mount a leadership challenge to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
00:14The Labour candidate returns to Westminster, having won the Makerfield seat comfortably, securing around 55% of the vote.
00:22The by-election was triggered to allow Burnham to take on Starmer,
00:26who has been under increasing pressure since Labour's nightmare local election results in May.
00:32But I do say to my own party, this is a final chance to change.
00:39This is what people said directly to me on the hundreds of doorsteps that I stood on.
00:47We must hear it. We must act upon it and we must get it right. There will be no second
00:54chance.
00:54Many Labour MPs regard Burnham as the party's best chance of bouncing back and fighting off growing support for Nigel
01:02Farage's reformed UK party.
01:04Starmer congratulated Burnham on his win, but he has no intention of letting it go.
01:10There isn't a leadership contest at the moment. There isn't one at the moment.
01:15But as I've said on many, many occasions, I don't think that's a good thing for the country to plunge
01:20us into chaos.
01:21But if there is a contest, just to be clear with you, then yes, I will run. I will stand.
01:25I've said repeatedly, I'm not going to walk away from that.
01:27The Prime Minister has faced repeated calls to resign since the May local elections.
01:33Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has already signalled that he will stand in any leadership race to replace Starmer.
01:40Thank you very much.
