00:00:52They made everybody believe that the Four Horsemen were the strongest faction in wrestling.

00:01:08The lifestyle of the rich and the famous.

00:01:12They were intentionally obnoxious, like the greed of the 1980s.

00:01:17We got the women, the money, the limos! We got it all!

00:01:20Being flamboyant and being on top of your game.

00:01:23The Horsemen rule, reign, and make professional wrestling just exactly what it is today!

00:01:30We felt like we were the best.

00:01:33There was a lack of respect.

00:01:36I got really mad one time, and quit.

00:01:40And then he quit with me.

00:01:42You can't lose the foundation and expect the building to stand.

00:01:46I just had lost my self-confidence so bad.

00:01:50The arm just went numb, and I knew instantly, you're done.

00:01:54But I had the time of my life.

00:01:57Not for Horsemen!

00:01:59Yes!

00:02:01I don't know that there has ever been a greater group of guys that influenced this business.

00:02:10To this day, the greatest faction that's ever existed.

00:02:34These are Anderson boots.

00:02:38Minnesota colors, maroon and gold.

00:02:42It's a different feel.

00:02:44It's almost like you have an advantage because you're an Anderson.

00:02:46It started with Lars and Gene and moved to Gene and Ole.

00:02:51And Ole passed it on down to me.

00:02:55It changed my career.

00:02:57If it wasn't for the Andersons, there wouldn't be the Four Horsemen.

00:03:02The foundation all began with the Andersons.

00:03:08Ole was born Alan Rogowski.

00:03:11Then he became Ole Anderson.

00:03:14And it was like he stepped into someone else's body.

00:03:18From Minnesota, combined wrestling weight, 520 pounds, Gene and Ole Anderson!

00:03:27I grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia, watching Mid-Atlantic Championship wrestling with my dad.

00:03:33Ole Anderson, just rough, tough, solid.

00:03:36We sure as hell can wrestle, and we wrestle better than anybody else in the world.

00:03:41He was like a boulder of granite to come up against in that ring.

00:03:46We're an intelligent team as well as two rough individuals.

00:03:50Way back when, there were a lot more people that believed the business was 100% legit

00:03:56because the guys protected the business in that fashion.

00:04:02It's a show, but that guy just knocked the piss out of that guy.

00:04:05That's the way Ole was.

00:04:08These men are doubly, doubly dangerous.

00:04:12Rick came down to the Carolinas.

00:04:18And we took him as our cousin, Gene and I.

00:04:22I was a big fan.

00:04:24I just liked wrestling.

00:04:25My birthday present, every year, my dad took me to wrestling matches.

00:04:29Once I was in it, man, I was hooked. Huge.

00:04:32I just couldn't get enough of it.

00:04:35I started in 72, but I was only working, you know, probably four times a month in Minneapolis.

00:04:42I moved to Charlotte in April of 74 with $200 in my pocket.

00:04:50I was married and had my first daughter.

00:04:55I came into the Carolinas as one of the Anderson's cousins because I was from Minnesota.

00:05:01And we did everything we could to teach him because the guy didn't know nothing.

00:05:06Well, of course not. Nobody knows anything.

00:05:07He was somewhat green, but when you take him and put him with top talent, you learn in the ring

00:05:15every night.

00:05:17So he learned extremely fast.

00:05:20That helped make Rick.

00:05:22I liked him.

00:05:24He did have a certain amount of flair.

00:05:27Flair, Mr. Exciting himself.

00:05:30And who knew that Rick would end up with this gift of gab?

00:05:36Kiss stealing!

00:05:37Whoo!

00:05:37Wheel of dealing!

00:05:38Limousine riding!

00:05:40Jet flying!

00:05:41Son of a gun!

00:05:42The flamboyant World Heavyweight Champion.

00:05:44This is what makes Rick Flair tick.

00:05:46When I won the World Championship in 81, I thought I was the coolest thing.

00:05:50Because the NWA Championship, you travel the world, different city every night.

00:05:56The first time I met Arne was in 1981.

00:05:59Then he was working in the Pensacola territory.

00:06:02I started out wrestling as my name.

00:06:05From Rome, Georgia, Marty Lundy.

00:06:08Arne resembled Oli.

00:06:10The physical resemblance was unbelievable.

00:06:12And the way they performed in the ring was very, very similar.

00:06:16Oli looked at me and went, I'll be damned, you do look like me.

00:06:20So he gave me his endorsement.

00:06:22From Minneapolis, Minnesota, Arne Anderson.

00:06:26That was worth its weight in platinum.

00:06:29Oli Anderson was a huge star.

00:06:31Of course, we knew Arne Anderson as Marty Lundy.

00:06:34Apparently, Oli Anderson's uncle had put him out to get experience

00:06:37before revealing the ties to the Anderson family.

00:06:40The next 14 months, my life would go 15 different ways, but all positive.

00:06:46I met my wife.

00:06:49We had a mutual friend, his roommate, I knew.

00:06:52Then I went to one of the shows.

00:06:54And we just started dating after that, so he's really funny.

00:06:58Great personality.

00:07:01During this time, Ric Flair, who was the world champion,

00:07:04back in the day when the champion would come in,

00:07:07somebody would be asked to go pick him up, take him to the town,

00:07:11bring him back to his hotel.

00:07:13And for the whole week he was there,

00:07:14you would basically be his chauffeur-in-waiting.

00:07:18I was blessed to have that.

00:07:20We became friends.

00:07:22And he said, I want to get you in Charlotte.

00:07:25We're fixing to make some moves for Jim Crockett promotions.

00:07:29State of wrestling was, well, lack of better word, they called it territories.

00:07:34Vince McMahon of WWE, he decided that he wanted to take over all of wrestling.

00:07:41He was going around and assembling an all-star team.

00:07:46He was getting top guys from each territory to come to the WWE,

00:07:51so Jim Crockett decided he'd do the same thing.

00:07:55Vince was on USA, and we realized that we needed to do that on cable to have any chance of

00:08:04survival.

00:08:04Turner Broadcasting, TBS, was hot.

00:08:08People were watching it.

00:08:10And it helped us.

00:08:13World Championship Wrestling.

00:08:14So we brought new talent in.

00:08:17March of 85, I went to Jim Crockett Promotions, and Oli joined in, and we had a brand new heel

00:08:24team.

00:08:25There was a history of Ric Flair being a cousin with the Andersons.

00:08:32Dusty Rhodes, who was the booker at the time, wanted to give it a try and see how it worked.

00:08:37The Andersons with Ric, and that was strong.

00:08:41Boy, it can't get any hotter than this.

00:08:45Tully Blanchard was laying in the wings.

00:08:51My dad was a full-time wrestler after he played football up in Canada,

00:08:56and we moved to San Antonio because he wanted to be a promoter.

00:09:02We had our own building that we ran every Wednesday night,

00:09:05and there are so many different things to do when you're raised in the wrestling business,

00:09:13all aspects of it, from peanuts and programs to sweeping to setting up the ring.

00:09:19And he wanted and expected me to be an athlete.

00:09:25I was taught that you needed to be a ring general if you were one of the heels.

00:09:32And I didn't reach my potential until I switched heel.

00:09:38And once I got to Crockett Promotions, it was on a tidal wave, and my career exploded.

00:09:45Ladies and gentlemen, Tully Blanchard is a winner, always will be a winner.

00:09:51They hated him for so long.

00:09:54They're a good fit for us.

00:09:55He looked the part.

00:09:56Great wrestler and a great manager, J.J. Dillon.

00:10:00I had done Tully for a long time.

00:10:03I mean, I worked for his father in San Antonio, so I had done Tully for years.

00:10:08I was always a fan.

00:10:10When I was 15 years old, I had a fan club for Johnny Valentine.

00:10:15I helped put the ring up, helped tear the ring down, sold in the concession.

00:10:20I did everything.

00:10:22I had 3,200 wrestling matches over a 20-year period.

00:10:28He experienced Jim Dillon.

00:10:30And then I became a manager.

00:10:31It's a desperate move is what it is, because you're the national champion and you're going to stay that way.

00:10:36Tully Blanchard got J.J. with him, and I think it was as simple, there wasn't a major angle that

00:10:42just defined him being with us, I think.

00:10:45There was one day that it just worked out that they had Ole and I, Tully Blanchard, J.J. Dillon,

00:10:54Ric Flair, all on the same interview.

00:10:58Something popped into my head, we were talking about our matches, biblical Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

00:11:07Never has there been so much destruction by so few on so many.

00:11:13I just dumped that out there and I went, you're looking at the Four Horsemen.

00:11:17The main thing is, what you've got right here in the ring, you've got a champion.

00:11:22You've got Tully Blanchard, you've got Ole Anderson, you've got myself, and last, but by no means least, you've got

00:11:29Ric Flair, the world's heavyweight champion.

00:11:31You're talking about the Four Horsemen of professional wrestling, the people that make things happen.

00:11:36It immediately sealed us as one unit, Flair, Ole, Tully, R, J.J.

00:11:42That's five, but we didn't count him in the four, but everybody got it.

00:11:46That stuck.

00:11:47You truly had your four baddest f*** together in one group as the Four Horsemen.

00:11:57And the next week, I threw up one of these, it caught on, and now it was the Four Horsemen

00:12:05against the world.

00:12:07Stand by, guys.

00:12:08Corpse.

00:12:11Here you go.

00:12:13Hey, Double A, I just saw you three times in the last three hours, and Tully, we saw you at

00:12:23a wrestling convention, and here we are.

00:12:25The Horsemen, the crux of the Horsemen.

00:12:28You and Arn, you go to an autograph show, you just meet somebody at a restaurant.

00:12:32God, you guys, when I was a kid, my dad took me to the matches.

00:12:35Right here.

00:12:36And stick up four fingers.

00:12:39Since the Arn did it, this deal, it's never going to get old.

00:12:43Our mindset, for those who don't know, was not about who's beating who and who's going on last and all

00:12:51that stuff.

00:12:51It was who could steal the show.

00:12:54That's what drove us, and it wasn't a competition so much against our opponents.

00:13:00Ironic as that is, it was a competition amongst ourselves.

00:13:03And the beneficiaries of that, dare I say, was the audience.

00:13:10And the reason that we all thrived with that friendly competition was because when the inception of it, it wasn't

00:13:22us sitting in a room going,

00:13:24God, you know, we need to be called the Four Horsemen.

00:13:27That's not what was done.

00:13:29You just put it in one of your interviews, and it clicked.

00:13:32This is it.

00:13:33It'll always will be.

00:13:34It was first, and it was the best.

00:13:37The faction in pro wrestling is just, it's a huge thing.

00:13:42DX.

00:13:42Sucker.

00:13:44NWO.

00:13:45Tooth.

00:13:45We.

00:13:46The Bloodline.

00:13:47Acknowledge us.

00:13:49And really, that all goes back to the Horsemen.

00:13:52It was unheard of at the time, because you're taking your top guys and you're putting them together basically as

00:13:58one.

00:13:59When you're the world champion, you always hang out with the elite people in the greatest sport in the world.

00:14:09I'm talking about professional wrestling.

00:14:10You look at the great Tony Blanchard.

00:14:13The United States WWE Champion.

00:14:16Right here.

00:14:17There they are.

00:14:18My own family.

00:14:19The national tag team champions.

00:14:22Only in Arn Anderson.

00:14:23And the new world, and I mean world television champion.

00:14:29The great Arn Anderson.

00:14:31You get these top four guys all coming together, and this was unheard of in pro wrestling.

00:14:37Imagine if WWE had put together Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, and the British Bulldogs as a team.

00:14:43So having these four elite guys together, it really put Jim Crockett promotions on the map and solidified their place

00:14:51in wrestling.

00:14:52Anybody out there watching, we're a unit. The four horsemen are not four individuals.

00:14:56It's not just that they were all great wrestlers and they were together.

00:15:03It's how they were all great together.

00:15:06Don't get my face again.

00:15:08You are going to make an ultimate mistake.

00:15:10You are way too far in the youth of your career.

00:15:14The sum was greater than the parts.

00:15:17Ric Flair in 1985 was a big deal.

00:15:20But he wasn't quite Ric Flair yet.

00:15:23He was emerging as that guy.

00:15:26The horsemen are a major part of why Ric Flair is the Ric Flair that he is right now.

00:15:32We are the studs in professional wrestling.

00:15:36I need them.

00:15:37This is a collective effort.

00:15:38I was blonde and I had a flamboyant lifestyle and flamboyant character.

00:15:44Oli and Arn were the epitome of mean, tough, rugged wrestlers.

00:15:49Tully was a combination of both.

00:15:51We interacted beautifully and brought a lot to each other.

00:15:55The greatest deal in the world.

00:15:59In order to qualify as one of the four horsemen, you've got to be able to back up what you're

00:16:03saying.

00:16:03A crew of people who rolled together.

00:16:06And if you mess with one, you mess with everybody.

00:16:10Let me just say something to you in all fair warning.

00:16:13A lot of guys have walked out here and made the mistake of jacking around with the four horsemen.

00:16:19And you know what happens to them? They get hurt real bad.

00:16:22He's always had this vibrant energy of confidence, of swagger.

00:16:25And when you put that in front of a team, like, he thrives in those situations.

00:16:29Just because I'm Ric Flair, styling, profiling, doesn't mean that I don't know how to be just as mean and

00:16:39tough and nasty and my job dictates I have to be.

00:16:46He could talk his s**t and he could back it up, which was the coolest part.

00:16:51To be the man, Daddy, you've got to beat the man.

00:16:54I'm a big fan of Ric Flair. I think if you're going to be a champion, you have to have

00:17:00no limits to what you do.

00:17:01I'm the dirtiest player in the game!

00:17:04The fact that he was a champion, and no matter what challenges he was faced against, he was always going

00:17:11to be fine.

00:17:12Even when one of the four horsemen helped him to win or whatever the case may be.

00:17:16Charlie Blanchard and J.J. handed him a shoe!

00:17:19We wanted to be the best.

00:17:21The main four bad dudes were the four horsemen.

00:17:24It's proven to people that we are superior and we have to step on a few to make sure all

00:17:29other professional wrestlers know where the horsemen are coming from.

00:17:32And we're considered at one time by many of the most dangerous men in wrestling.

00:17:36You take public opinion, put it above your own aspirations, you're going to be a billion.

00:17:41We do what we want to do because we want to live.

00:17:46Those were the original bad guys.

00:17:49Look out! Look out! It's totally an Arn Anderson!

00:17:52They made everybody believe that the four horsemen were the strongest faction in wrestling.

00:17:58Here they come, Arn Anderson, Kelly Blanchard, J.J. Dillon.

00:18:02It's three on one.

00:18:03Look out! Knee right across the head, rams his face right down the mat.

00:18:06And the news is that at this time, Ricky Moore in a very severely broken nose, shattered his nose.

00:18:11You know, I remember as a kid, watching the WWE, the very shiny, super kid-friendly.

00:18:20I would see some of Jim Crockett's stuff that came up on different channels in the D.C. area.

00:18:25It just was a little more like a real fight.

00:18:28And you were kind of like, oh, my God, what is going on down here?

00:18:32They were so good at beating people up.

00:18:35Somebody's going to stop this.

00:18:38This was before there was a horsemen fandom.

00:18:41You know, these guys were hated.

00:18:43In those days, they would throw batteries, water bottles that were frozen.

00:18:51They had people, you know, wanting to take them out.

00:18:55There was a young lady, about 80 years old, with the nickname Spider, in Columbia, South Carolina,

00:19:03who sat ringside and had a wooden walking stick.

00:19:09I threw Ricky Morton out there, and he landed at her feet, not by design.

00:19:13I went out to get him.

00:19:15And as I snatched Ricky up, she cracked me over the head with that walking stick.

00:19:20But she knocked me cuckoo.

00:19:23He kind of protected us from things that happened at work.

00:19:26Like, I wouldn't hear if there was something with a fan or an altercation.

00:19:30I mean, he didn't bring that home to me.

00:19:33He came home with scrapes.

00:19:37She was my nurse.

00:19:39She was my cheerleader.

00:19:42And without her putting me back together and sending me out the next day,

00:19:47there would probably have been some days I wouldn't have made it.

00:19:51It's not all fun and games once you push it to the limit with the audience and they go,

00:19:56well, they may need some help.

00:20:02It was just the theme of believability that the horsemen did.

00:20:08I mean, it was the way the Anderson family oozed destructive dominance.

00:20:17Gene and I, we did things that made people upset.

00:20:21I was so damn good, people tried to kill me.

00:20:24I've been stabbed seven times in my pro career by fans.

00:20:30Everybody would like to see the Anderson's go down.

00:20:32It hasn't happened yet.

00:20:34It's never going to happen.

00:20:35They jumped me in the back room while I was doing an interview.

00:20:49Those were the believability things that were so intense.

00:21:03Dusty wanted to create attractions that you had to come to the arena to see.

00:21:07And that you can appreciate a struggle and being beat down and coming back.

00:21:14Dusty was so smart.

00:21:16He knew that the bad guys had to have heat if we were going to fill those seats.

00:21:21The audience will pay to see the good guy beat up the bad guy,

00:21:24so you better have a reason for it.

00:21:26Dusty Rhodes had it.

00:21:28He's just a genius.

00:21:29Whatever he wanted to do, he did.

00:21:31All the good guys and all the bad guys the way it should be.

00:21:34That's what made the magic.

00:21:36Dusty was a big picture guy.

00:21:39And I complimented him by being a detailed person.

00:21:42He and I were calling the shots.

00:21:45The four horsemen got into the dressing room in Greensboro

00:21:49and scrubbed their face right in the dressing room.

00:21:51At that time, it just was a look that we had not seen yet.

00:21:56Much more gritty and hardcore.

00:22:00Because you can tell it's so real to them.

00:22:02Like that's what people resonate with wrestling.

00:22:05Jimmy's very smart.

00:22:06He knows what's going on.

00:22:08He's given us the rope because he's seeing that we know what we're doing.

00:22:13And he's giving us the looing.

00:22:17The thing with Dusty, it was like, if you're gonna take over, you gotta take the big dog down.

00:22:26Dusty's a booker.

00:22:27He's a creative mastermind behind it all.

00:22:31Booked himself as a star.

00:22:33The chant of Dusty for the fans.

00:22:36His greatest strength was creativity.

00:22:38But he also was very, very charismatic.

00:22:41Before it was Flashable, I was the American dream.

00:22:44And before it was Flashable, I am the rap master, Rick Flatt.

00:22:48Everybody loved him.

00:22:49We're just polar opposites in the eyes of the people.

00:22:52If he was a perfect brave face, I was the perfect heel.

00:22:55Dusty Rhodes, don't ever make a mistake.

00:22:58A stick in your nose in my business.

00:23:00He was a champion.

00:23:02They all tried to protect him.

00:23:04And that was the story behind it.

00:28:17we were in at the Helmsley Palace

00:28:29get up in the morning

00:28:30flying, fly, check into a hotel

00:28:33gym, eat, rest, go to work

00:28:40from one arena to the next arena

00:28:42to the next arena

00:28:42sold out because the horsemen

00:28:44are on the marquee

00:28:45we're put in a position

00:28:46of drawing money

00:28:47and we did a lot

00:28:49we pack major arenas

00:28:51all over the world

00:28:53because people like to see

00:28:54the best wrestlers in the world

00:28:57today

00:28:57that's us

00:28:58so much money

00:28:59so fast

00:29:01the horsemen

00:29:02they meant dollars

00:29:03because we are

00:29:04the measuring stick

00:29:05we are the reason

00:29:07that there's tens of thousands

00:29:08of people

00:29:09in every arena

00:29:10I was making more money

00:29:12than I had ever

00:29:12dreamt of

00:29:13my biggest year

00:29:15at that time

00:29:47ready to rock and roll

00:29:49I don't remember

00:29:50one single day

00:29:51whether anybody had a sick day

00:29:53twice on Saturday

00:29:54twice on Sunday

00:29:57oh yeah

00:29:58it was a different mindset

00:30:01we didn't have to be governed

00:30:03we governed ourselves

00:30:05you know

00:30:06it's just

00:30:06I would agree with that

00:30:08because that was a mindset

00:30:10I mean for us to get a day off

00:30:13I can remember

00:30:14when I got married

00:30:15to wife number two

00:30:17and

00:30:17but just getting all of us off

00:30:19so that you and Rick

00:30:21and JJ

00:30:22could be in my wedding

00:30:24and that's just for the one day

00:30:25we wouldn't have hung out

00:30:27on our days off

00:30:28if we weren't

00:30:28if we didn't get along

00:30:29and we did

00:30:30Marty always traveled

00:30:32that was our life

00:30:33back then

00:30:34the wrestlers

00:30:34were all in Charlotte

00:30:35and they all hung together

00:30:39going over to Rick's

00:30:40in those days

00:30:41he had a real nice gym

00:30:45as far as the families

00:30:47it was just basically

00:30:49the flares in us

00:30:51because Tully

00:30:52didn't have children

00:30:52and JJ

00:30:54his kids were older

00:31:01and we spent a lot of time together

00:31:05that didn't live here

00:31:16and so I wanted

00:31:17to spend time with them

00:32:02that was a shoot on my part

00:32:04to go watch and wrestle

00:32:06it was one of the things

00:32:08that was legitimate

00:32:09in the business

00:32:10he was leaving

00:32:10he gave us a date

00:32:11then we found out

00:32:13about Luger

00:32:13the man that has taken

00:32:14the wrestling world

00:32:15by storm

00:32:17Lex Luger

00:32:19had a different feel

00:32:20and immediately

00:32:22everything changed

00:33:34because they're like

00:57:25it was growth

00:57:26by necessity

00:57:29not by

00:57:30we really wanted

00:57:31to do it

00:57:32all of a sudden

00:57:34debt

00:57:35started coming

00:57:38yeah we were

00:57:42when you're making money

00:57:43you're blind

00:59:19i didn't need to be spanked
