00:41All right, guys, welcome to Gnome Alaska.
00:48Ah, got one room, two rooms.
00:56Gnome's got a population of about three and a half thousand people,
00:59and it's about a one and a half hour jet flight from Anchorage.
01:02It's an old historic mining town here in Alaska.
01:07Oh, look at that beautiful sunrise.
01:09It's been a crazy winter here in Alaska.
01:12Gnome only got snow a few weeks ago.
01:15Usually this time of year, the ocean's frozen solid.
01:17We can go out and fish on it.
01:19I have real concerns about that.
01:23My friend John lives down here.
01:25First thing I'm going to do is swing by his house.
01:29Hey, John.
01:30Hey, Luke.
01:31Welcome back.
01:32It's good to see you.
01:33Thank you for having me.
01:34So, how about this weather, man?
01:35I know.
01:35It's been a weird winter, huh?
01:37Three different people have already told me about how weird the ice is.
01:40Oh, yeah.
01:41I already have two pots out there.
01:43Two of them are set and two of them are on the ice,
01:45so we can set them.
01:49I brought two shrimp pots.
01:50We're going to try for some shrimp, too.
01:52No, too big.
02:05So, we're going to be taking this gear out onto the frozen Bering Sea to go look for some king
02:09crab and shrimp.
02:10And right now, we're on frozen salt water.
02:13This is the Gnome Harbor right here.
02:15We'll see how the ice is doing because apparently a large chunk of it broke off and drifted away.
02:21So, we don't want to be on one of those when that happens.
02:32There's some gold miners diving for gold under the ice over there.
02:36We go check it out.
02:42This is someone's gold claim.
02:44Doesn't look like they're here, though.
02:45They'll use the auger to cut a big hole in the ice,
02:48and then they'll send a diver down to the bottom with a big vacuum dredge,
02:52and he'll suck up the sand and gold off the bottom and send it through this slush box right here.
02:57The divers will have to have a boiler that pumps hot water into their wetsuit
03:02in order to be able to stay down and work in the cold temperatures.
03:05It's pretty hardcore stuff.
03:15Is that a fox?
03:16There's a fox on the ice pack over there.
03:22I was wondering what that fox was doing on the ice pack.
03:26Looks like he was hunting ducks.
03:29Look at all the organs and meat are just picked clean.
03:32It's been such a warm year that there's still ducks out.
03:35That's unbelievable.
03:36There's almost never ducks this time of year.
03:43Nice flat area.
03:52No, no, no, no, no, no.
04:14So much water.
04:17No.
04:20No, no, no.
04:24Ouh, un peu d'exercise.
04:26Oh, il y a tout.
04:27Il y a des gens qui sont en train de faire ça.
04:37All right.
04:50Il y a beaucoup d'experiment.
04:51Si on a proper shrimp pot,
04:52avec la proper mesh size,
04:54we might really catch a ton of shrimp.
04:56You got some frozen salmon heads for bait.
05:02All right.
05:03Let's see.
05:08Put a little styrofoam over the hole to keep it from icing up
05:11and then put a piece of plywood on top of that
05:13to keep snow machines from going in.
05:14That and marking it with a stick should warn anybody.
05:17All right, let's go get another spot.
05:43We'll let those sit overnight.
05:45We're going to go check a couple crab pots that have been soaking.
06:02There she is.
06:06There's a couple.
06:07There's a couple, yeah.
06:09And the starfish.
06:11Nice.
06:12Nice.
06:12There you go.
06:14Oh, look at that.
06:15It's pretty.
06:15Yeah.
06:15Those are nice sized ones.
06:18Look at the size of that.
06:22Whoa.
06:23There we go.
06:24Look at that.
06:25Big old Alaskan red king crab.
06:28Thing weighs about what?
06:30Two, three pounds.
06:31Look at that big old king crab.
06:36More starfish.
06:41Looks like another male.
06:43Another gorgeous crab.
06:46He's going to tuck his legs to get inside that cooler.
06:49These are big crabs.
06:50Especially that one.
06:51That one's.
06:51That's a chonky crab.
07:16Oh, that's a jumbo starfish though.
07:19The starfish was eating this little sculpin.
07:23Well, enjoy your meal.
07:24Bacon grease, tomkots, salmon.
07:28Alright.
07:53That thing broke off.
07:55That auger broke.
07:57That's why it went crazy.
08:01We're going to go head back to town and see about getting another auger.
08:13In the summertime, the gold miners dredge off of these boats.
08:16There's a whole bunch of them.
08:18All pulled up out of the ice.
08:26So, I want to go camping on the ice pack tonight.
08:29So, I'm going to go get my camping gear out of the hotel.
08:32While I do that, John's going to go ahead and hunt down an auger.
08:37I got camping gear and now I just need some food and supplies.
08:42Stop in here at the AC store and get some groceries.
09:07Alright, we got an auger.
09:09We got our gear.
09:09Let's go.
09:37Just barely.
09:39Yep.
10:07I can see a little bit of snow.
10:08Yep.
10:08Oh, yeah.
10:09There's quite a bit of snow in there.
10:10It's probably melting into the air filter.
10:12Oh, I see.
10:13Oh, look at all that snow.
10:14Yeah.
10:16That'll do it.
10:17This is all wet too.
10:20Yeah, that'll do it.
10:21I'm two for two for breaking John's augers, but I like to mix it up a little bit.
10:25So, this time I got a whole bunch of snow and water in the air filter, which has flooded the
10:29engine with water.
10:30Which isn't good.
10:44There we go.
10:48There we go.
10:50I always wanted an ice chair, huh?
10:54There we go.
10:56Got a nice little spot out here on the Bering Sea.
10:58Got two holes to fish through.
11:00Now, I just need to set up my tent.
11:06Normal tent stakes won't go into ice, so you have to use screws.
11:22Every single time I set this thing up, though, it's bigger than I remember.
11:40While I was fussing with the tent, John cut another hole for a crab pot.
11:57We'll let that sit and see what's there tomorrow.
11:59But, uh, I'm feeling pretty good about this spot for as far as fishing goes, but there's one downside.
12:05We're really close to the edge of the ice.
12:07From time to time, large chunks of ice break off and drift off towards Russia.
12:21This right here is loose moving ice.
12:24You can see it.
12:24It's actually drifting right there.
12:29To give you an idea of how close we are to the edge.
12:34That's our crab pot and right back there is my tent.
12:37Other than the ice breaking underneath me and drifting off to sea,
12:41my only other real concern is polar bears.
12:43Normally, the polar bears don't come around Nome until the ice breaks up.
12:47And that usually doesn't happen until April.
12:50But, you know, the ice is breaking up.
12:52So, you know, I'm sure there won't be any polar bears.
12:56It'll be fine.
12:58It'll be fine.
13:00It'll be fine.
13:05Let's see how we're doing in here.
13:11I'm going to borrow some of this foam from John.
13:15Give me something to sit on.
13:23This right here is a titanium wood stove.
13:26It weighs about a pound and a half.
13:40Okay, hot, grenござ.
13:41Oh shit.
13:53Uh, I'll be training with Mike.
13:55Go, fi-AH-ROPE!
13:55What far?
13:55How could I die?
13:56What?
13:57I should be 13.
13:58Okay, wait.
14:23All right, there we go.
14:25It's warming up nicely
14:26in here. I've got my gloves hanging up so they can dry and I think it's time to start doing
14:31some fishing. So this right here is a crab snare. You tie it to the end of your line. You
14:38put some
14:38bait inside the cage and you drop it down at the bottom of the ocean and a crab will come
14:42along
14:42and start eating on it and hopefully one of his legs will get caught in these little snares.
14:48I've got a frozen tomcod here. Some shrimp pellets.
14:59All right, I've got a little lure. I'm going to drop down there and see if there's any tomcod or
15:03flounder.
15:12All right, we've got two rods set up. We'll see if anything moves them. My boots are kind of wet
15:17and my feet are very cold. The thing about hot tents is all the heat rises. So it's really cold
15:24down here on the floor and it's really hot up here. So if I can get my boots up higher,
15:28they're going to dry out. Hang my socks up. Put my boots next to the stove and see if they
15:43dry off.
15:53Let that warm up.
15:55All right.
16:14Ah, it's a classic. Grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.
16:26Ah, that's good. I think I'm going to go ahead and top off that grilled cheese sandwich with a
16:31nice little dessert. I worked hard today. I earned it.
16:37I think it's time to hit the sack. Now I want to keep the fire going all night,
16:42but I don't want to be waking up and stoking it all the time. So I'm going to use
16:45one of these Duraflame logs.
16:49There we go.

17:20My sleeping bag is starting to warm up and it feels good.
17:23I'm so tired.
17:24I'm just going to sit here and watch my fishing rods.
17:27But unless I get something on, I'll see you guys in the morning.
17:31Well, good morning.
17:32It's about 8 a.m.
17:33And as far as I know, I haven't drifted off to Russia and I haven't been eaten by a polar
17:37bear.
17:38Very strong start to today.
17:39I haven't seen any action on the rods, but I think they're both frozen in the hole.
17:44So I might have to break that loose and see what's going on.
17:47I'm not 100% sure what the temperature is outside, but I can tell it's dropped aggressively.
17:52It's cold in here.
17:53It's really cold.
17:54You can kind of use the frost line to gauge how cold it is outside.
17:58The higher up it is, the colder it is.
18:00It feels like it might be close to 0 degrees Fahrenheit outside.
18:03It's pretty cold.
18:05But the sun's going to come up in about a half an hour and I am completely out of firewood.
18:09So if I don't want it to get really cold in here, I better go outside and start cutting some
18:13more wood.
18:15Oh, I am bleeding feathers.
18:22My boots.
18:23The toe box is dry and warm.
18:26And this part is very cold.
18:29My ankle is icy cold and my toes are so warm.
18:33It feels really weird.
18:49I think I want to check the fishing rods now, see what's up.
18:52So the hole's iced over.
18:54My line's stuck.
18:55So I could have a fish on and I wouldn't even know it.
19:07Oh, look at this.
19:08A little crab.
19:10Oh, he was tangled up in my line.
19:12He's kind of fuzzy.
19:15It's a female crab.
19:16Oh, she's got eggs.
19:18See, those are her eggs in there.
19:21I don't know what kind of crab that is, but let's put her back.
19:25The shrimp and crabs have been at it.
19:27Look, the bait's all bones.
19:28There's hardly any flesh left on the bait.
19:30I'll have to freshen that up.
19:36I got the rods rebaited and dropped back down.
19:39We'll see if anything hits while I make some food.
19:52All right.
19:58Oh, curses.
19:59Well, I just lost an egg.
20:01I'll have to refinance the house to get another.
20:03Let's see if we can keep this one on this skillet.
20:07Stay where you are, Mr. Egg.
20:11Hey, hey.
20:12Nope.
20:12Nope.
20:19There we go.
20:20A little egg and sausage sandwich.
20:21The ketchup isn't frozen, but it's thicker than normal.
20:31Well, we made it to sunrise.
20:33I think it's time to check my fishing rods and see if we got anything.
20:37Oh, something.
20:40What was that?
20:41Oh, something dropped off.
20:43It wasn't a crab, but there was like a starfish or something attached to it.
20:47Saw it drop off right at the hole.
20:56Oh, it's cold.
20:57It's about 10 degrees outside.
21:01Oh, it is a beautiful day out here.
21:04I think I'm going to clean up a little bit.
21:06Then we're going to go check the shrimp pots.
21:09All righty.
21:21Well, we got one starfish and there's a crab in here, but it's not a king crab.
21:30I don't know what kind of crab that is, but we'll let it go.
21:36There, there's a sculpin.
21:38See, he's going up like this to make himself big so you can't swallow him.
21:42We'll let him go.
21:43I'm going to throw a fresh salmon head in there.
21:45Try it again.
21:46See what happens.
21:53Here's the second shrimp pot.
22:02That's disappointing.
22:03There were so many shrimp in this spot last year, they were getting stuck in your rope.
22:06Been really weird weather this year, so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that the animals
22:11are behaving different.
22:13All right, I'm going to go check one of the crab's traps.
22:20This is a new crab trap John dropped down last night.
22:23We'll see if it's got anything in it.
22:33There you go.
22:34There's one.
22:37There's two.
22:38Two good-looking males right there.
22:40Not skunked.
22:42Look at that.
22:49Yeah, two crabs.
22:50It's not bad for less than 24 hours.
22:57Tell you what, this spot's been a bit of a bust.
23:00I don't know if I want to camp here a second night.
23:10Oh, the wind's starting to pick up and that's making me a little nervous.
23:13I've never tried this tent in high winds before, but I wouldn't want to test it.
23:24I'm not going to test it.
23:24I need to see if it's already a little bit of a young male.
23:27I don't know if I'm going to be able to catch up to the crab fishing.
23:27All right.
23:29All right.
24:15The hardest part about hunting ptarmigan is finding them.
24:18I'm looking for an all-white bird in the middle of all this snow.
24:21That's why it's so important to go on these sunny days.
24:41Right there.
24:43Just saw one ptarmigan up on that bird and he just hopped over into the brush.
24:51Oh, there they go, they just flew over there.
24:54These are all ptarmigan footprints right here.
24:56Alright, let's go find their buddies.
25:06I can see a whole bunch of tarmigan prints right along with these willows.
25:10Look right there.
25:15I keep seeing tarmigan but they're skittish, very skittish.
25:30I saw red fox run out in front of me.
25:33In the old days, they used to hunt them by running them over with the snow machine.
25:36Doesn't damage the pelt as much as shooting them.
25:42Well, the sun's getting low.
25:44I think it's time to get heading back.
25:46But this has been real fun.
25:56Hey John, sorry to keep you waiting.
26:03Alright, we're gonna go check some crab pots.
26:12Yeah, there wasn't much ice forming yesterday.
26:15Today is a different story.
26:19Oh, one!
26:21And a starfish!
26:23That's another male, right?
26:24Uh-huh.
26:27There we go.
26:28There we go.
26:31They are so cool.
26:33Alright.
26:35Okay, I'll put them in the cooler before he freezes up.
26:48That's a big old crab right there.
26:50Look at all the sea lice.
26:53They are eating on the bait.
26:55Alright.
27:02We're gonna try the shrimp pot.
27:09Another one of those little fuzzy crabs.
27:12Oh, it got a little sea urchin in here.
27:18Grab it with the knife.
27:25Oh, that is interesting.
27:26It's definitely an ocean flavor.
27:29But it's different than I've had.
27:30A little sea urchin.
27:32The sea is a big foyer.
27:43Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
27:44It's down until we're ready.
27:45We'll take it home.
27:55I'll tell you what, I'm glad I pulled the tent down.
27:57It's supposed to get the 30 mile per hour winds tonight.
28:05My feet are so wet and cold.
28:08I cannot wait to get these boots off.
28:09Oh, this is nice.
28:15I'll see you in the morning.
28:19All right.
28:30I didn't sleep very well last night.
28:33I woke up with this headache.
28:34It was just nasty.
28:42I'm not 100%, but I'm feeling a little better.
28:45So I think I'm gonna go try doing a little hunting.
28:48All right.
28:50Oh, it's colder today.
28:52I'm gonna feel it in the nose.
29:02The ice shelf broke away here in front of town.
29:05Just last week people were gold mining and crabbing out there.
29:18Look at that thing.
29:21Yeah, that's a sweet K truck.
29:41I just haven't seen anything.
29:51Well, me and John are gonna go set some more crab pots.
29:54We heard there's a spot a little further down that's producing.
30:10This place is called Cripple River.
30:12It's a little seasonal native community where they come here for subsistence fishing in the summer.
30:17Nobody here this time of year.
30:20There's a lot of little seasonal fishing communities like this around Alaska.
30:24We'll play such a lot of communal fishing έχing and fishing, and we'll get on Ahora.
30:41I'll keep moving.
30:43Hi, boy。
30:45Yeah...
30:46Your fingers are getting cold just watching you.
30:48Justin St white.
30:48Well, it's actually man or hot.
30:50Cause if you keep moving than you really don't feel that cold.
30:56C'est un gros gros gros.
30:57Je sais.
31:18Bencky et les enfants vont être en place à l'air pour 20 minutes,
31:21donc je vais vous freshener et rentrer à l'air.
31:28C'est parti.
31:29Hey, buddy.
31:30Come here.
31:32Hey, Tommy.
31:34Hey.
31:35Good to see you, buddy.
31:36Bye.
31:37Bye.
31:38Bye.
31:38Here you go.
31:43Here, Tommy.
31:45Everybody, welcome to Nome.
31:47Yay!
31:48First time for Jacob and Mommy,
31:50but Nathan and Tommy have both been here, haven't you?
31:52Yeah.
31:53All right, we'll give you a little tour.
31:54See there?
31:55There's an old abandoned gold dredge up there.
31:57Yeah.
31:58See all those, the dredge boats over there?
32:00That's cool.
32:00Yeah, and that's the harbor.
32:02The old gold mining equipment over there.
32:04That's cool.
32:06Well, we have a dinner appointment tonight, though.
32:09You guys, you remember John?
32:09His wife is going to make some king crab Filipino food for us.
32:13Nice.
32:15Dad?
32:16All right, guys.

32:54If you want to keep it cold.
32:55You see a couple of boxes missing.
32:57I'm from Wasilla, the airport, and the airport.
