Let's take a look at the early access demo for Bushcraft Survival, a northern‑wilderness survival game inspired by The Long Dark, and real outdoor bushcraft. I cover how the demo plays and give my opinion on the experience. This is an independent, unsponsored review based on the demo key provided by the developer.

00:00So the next game that I tried in this indie demo stream series that I'm doing is Bushcraft Survival,
00:06and this one does something I don't see very often.
00:09There's no building templates.
00:11Everything that you make, you have to place and snap together manually.
00:15So basically, we've got a survival sandbox game here,
00:18where you're collecting resources and building everything from the ground up,
00:22but it's that freeform building system that's really the main hook here.
00:26The demo was actually given to me as an early access,
00:30so depending on when you're watching this, it might not be available yet.
00:33It's worth keeping an eye on Steam to see when it goes live, though.
00:37This game is being developed by a solo Canadian dev out of Newfoundland,
00:41which is kind of a cool coincidence for me, because originally I was born there,
00:46and like the dev here, I've got an engineering background as well.
00:49Anyway, the game starts you off with a tutorial that actually turns off all of your survival needs at first,
00:54which I think is a really smart choice.
00:57So this way you can just focus on learning the mechanics without worrying about food, water, all that stuff.
01:02Then once you've completed the tutorial, and you're more comfortable with the mechanics and how it works,
01:07it gives you the option to do a proper survival run with everything turned on.
01:11All right, so what did I think?
01:13What do I do?
01:14How do I get out?
01:17Press right-click to continue.
01:18Hold left-click on the steering wheel
01:20to shut the engine off.
01:25Okay.
01:26Next, open the door by clicking
01:28Open the bushcraft guide from the pause menu.
01:36Lean to shelter.
01:39Okay.
01:40Lean to shelter.
01:42There's all kinds of bush there.
01:45There's all kinds of bush there.
01:50The distance.
01:52Oh, yeah.
01:54Okay.
01:54Okay, but I want to clear these off first, I guess.
02:04And these ones.
02:07How many am I supposed to put?
02:09Did I just place them like this?
02:15Oh, I didn't even read this.
02:17Finish the roof.
02:18Next, place these on it to provide basic cover.
02:22Yeah, that's what I'm doing.
02:24I wasn't watching.
02:25Oh, I see.
02:27Yeah, it was green.
02:28Wasn't it?
02:30What am I doing wrong here?
02:32There we go.
02:35Do I click tab to bring up the...
02:37There's way too many things to remember.
02:42Ski Lodge button.
02:45Let's see where it is relative here.
02:48I guess it's a magic truck.
02:49They have to give you some kind of health here.
02:53Everything else is just brutal.
02:57What am I supposed to do?
02:58Just go in?
03:00Whoa!
03:03There's like some crazy goblin dude.
03:07The biggest thing that this game has going for it is definitely the building system.
03:12Having full control over how everything is placed is really interesting and it does add
03:16a level of immersion that you don't usually get from games that rely on the pre-built templates.
03:22It also has that cold wilderness survival vibe, which I liked a lot.
03:26To be honest, this game actually reminded me quite a bit of The Long Dark, just with a
03:30lot more emphasis on manual building.
03:33But that same freedom, it's kind of a double-edged sword in my opinion.
03:37The reason being is that while it does make things more immersive, it also makes things
03:42a lot more involved.
03:44Pretty much every action requires some specific input.
03:47You're manually opening doors.
03:49If you have the vehicle, you're getting in and out of the vehicle with another button
03:52press.
03:53Then you need to make sure and close the door behind you, that kind of thing.
03:56It's all very deliberate.
03:58And this does add quite a bit to the realism and I can appreciate that, but it also means
04:03that even simple tasks, they're going to take more time than they should.
04:06I also found myself forgetting steps or having to redo things because I didn't play something
04:11quite right and I think over time it probably gets easier, but early on at least, it did start
04:16to feel a little bit tedious for me.
04:18So overall, I don't think this is really my kind of game, but that's not to knock the
04:24game itself.
04:24I think for the right player, someone who really wants that hands-on realistic survival experience
04:30with full control over building, this is probably going to click really well for them.
04:35If you like slower, more methodical gameplay and you enjoy figuring things out step by step,
04:40there's definitely something here for you.
04:42I'll be keeping my eye on this one as things are always prone to change as they develop
04:47as well.
04:48Like I said, if the demo is available by the time that you're watching this, I'd recommend
04:52checking it out for yourself to see if it clicks for you.
04:54If you enjoyed the video and want to see the indie demo streams live, make sure to check
04:58out the Twitch channel.
04:59But also let me know if you like these breakdowns afterwards.
05:03Also, likes are appreciated and please subscribe if you want to see more gaming content.
05:07I also do reviews and walkthroughs and other gaming content, so definitely check that out
05:12if you're interested.
05:13Thank you so much for taking the time to watch today, and until next time, take care.
05:37Bye.
