00:01This program documents actual homicide investigations.
00:05Criminal charges are often dropped or reduced,
00:07and all suspects shown are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
00:23We have been screaming justice for Rob Cobain.
00:28Screaming it. I'm screaming it. Justice.
00:32He was an artist. He worked, supported his kids.
00:36No criminal history whatsoever.
00:39And he's found shot and killed in his own apartment
00:42for no reason that we have been able to find.
00:45It's not just a homicide case anymore.
00:48I take it personal that this is sitting unsolved on my name.
00:54Detective Schaefer, he was passionate about this case,
00:57but he got promoted to put back on the road.
01:00So, I'm gonna pick up where he left off.
01:05He was the people of life.
01:07No matter where you saw him, he was smiling.
01:09He was always encouraging.
01:11And his biggest thing was unity.
01:14He loved music and he loved his kids.
01:17That was his life.
01:18He was a fan of all music.
01:21Kurt Cobain, that was one of his idols.
01:25And he took that moniker and thus Rob Cobain was born.
01:29He was just a phenomenal artist.
01:31But as a father and an artist, this story got cut short.
01:36He definitely did not deserve this.
01:39We're all just so heartbroken.
01:41I must be Captain Planet.
01:43I feel the Earth's pain.
01:45My little heart is damaged.
01:46Heartbroken.
01:47Heartbroken.
01:48Woo!
01:49I'm heartbroken.
01:50Heartbroken.
01:51Woo!
02:05Heartbroken.
02:09In North Charleston's Forest Hills neighborhood,
02:12the property manager of an apartment complex calls 9-1-1.
02:199-1-1, what's the address of the emergency?
02:22Lowell Drive.
02:23Somebody reported that the sliding door was shattered
02:27and I'm right outside of the window or the door.
02:31And I can see somebody's inside sitting up on the couch.
02:36His head is back and there's blood all over the place.
02:40Okay, I'm getting help on the way.
02:51Is that your apartment?
02:53No, it's the apartment.
02:54Do we know who his apartment that is?
02:55I don't believe it's the person that's in the apartment.
03:021-15 dispatchers.
03:04Fears to be a shooting.
03:05I'm clearing the apartment.
03:07North Charleston Police Department!
03:14AEMS, you guys are clear.
03:18Check on him.
03:23I got a pulse.
03:25Sorry.
03:26Okay.
03:271-15 dispatch.
03:29This is going to be confirmed.
03:2910-7.
03:31All right, copy.
03:32Detectives are en route.
03:442-30.
03:452-30.
03:452-30.
03:45All right.
03:462-30.
03:472-30.
03:47The tape's off here.
03:532-30.
03:582-30.
03:592-30.
04:01This next door neighbor at 5 a.m. heard two bangs.
04:06Two loud bangs.
04:06She thought it was a car accident or whatever.
04:09Around 10-ish.
04:10She noticed the glass was shattered.
04:13And then at that point, she called for the maintenance.
04:16When the maintenance man spotted the victim, he contacted the property manager, who called 9-1-1.
04:22Robert Brown.
04:23That's what the mail on the floor in there says.
04:26And that looks like.
04:3140-year-old Robert Brown III, known by his stage name, Rob Cobain, was a local hip-hop artist who
04:38also worked at a jewelry store.
04:41Recently divorced, he had a 9-year-old son with his ex-wife and a 13-year-old daughter from
04:46a previous relationship.
04:54The front door was locked when I got here, dead bolting.
04:56I made entry through this hole right here.
04:58If the wares were open on the side, that was like that when we got here.
05:14Rob was shot four times.
05:17In the back, legs, and ankle.
05:22He's using his underwear.
05:25Was this a PS4?
05:29They were maybe playing the game.
05:33Oh, there you go right there.
05:35So, one shell casing.
05:37The team finds a shell casing on the living room floor.
05:42There's everyone back there, too.
05:45Another one behind the couch.
05:47Facing.
05:49And one in the front hallway.
05:56Whoever it was, he was very close when they started shooting him.
06:00There's blood all over there.
06:02There clearly was a scuffle at the door.
06:05Guesses that him and someone else were fighting, and that's when the shots started going off.
06:09Maybe he's trying to flee.
06:11Could have been shooting at him and put one through the glass.
06:14And then from there, he had collapsed right in front of the couch.
06:20There's a bag of weed.
06:24His phone is in his back bedroom.
06:29The original responding officer said he noticed that the front door was bolt locked.
06:34The window was open.
06:35I'm thinking that's how they went in.
06:37Could be.
06:38Not impossible.
06:40There's a possibility this was just a random burglary gone wrong.
06:45My personal opinion, somebody else was let in the house.
06:49Maybe a possible girlfriend involved or something, because he's in his underwear in there.
06:56And I don't think he would have been, like, hanging out with one of his buddies or another dude in
06:59there, like, half-naked or whatever.
07:03Right now, we have to canvas for video.
07:06Hopefully get lucky, because right now we don't have a lot to go off of.
07:11It's gonna be a tough one.
07:19Can I ask you a question real quick?
07:21Did you hear anything earlier this morning?
07:22Any shouting, arguing, or anything like that?
07:24Mm-hmm.
07:25Okay.
07:26All right, well, I appreciate you guys.
07:29Has anybody already talked to you?
07:31Okay.
07:36Everybody must be at work.
07:41Then...
07:42Okay.
07:44One of Rob's neighbors comes forward.
07:46His ex-wife know that they just got recently divorced.
07:50He has two kids from Germany, and then he has an autistic son.
07:55Okay.
07:56Did they live there?
07:57Sometimes.
07:58Rob's car was broken down, so his daughter has been staying with his ex-wife so she could get a
08:03ride to school.
08:05And you don't know him to have any drama or beef with anybody like that?
08:08Mm-mm.
08:09He did live with these two individuals.
08:11They lived in his daughter's room.
08:13What did those two people name that he would live with before?
08:17I have nothing.
08:18They're just a girl and then a man.
08:20Black, most black.
08:21Okay.
08:22He did kick him out.
08:24When was that that he kicked him out?
08:26Two and a half of my son.
08:28Okay.
08:38Two hours in.
08:40A neighbor's next door.
08:41Made a call to her, so she came over here to give us a little bit more information.
08:46Okay.
08:47Another friend of Rob's arrives on scene.
08:49Hello.
08:50I'm Detective Shaffer.
08:51My name is Shaginish.
08:53So what's your relationship to Robert?
08:56We're friends.
08:57Okay.
08:58Has there been any drama recently in the house over there?
09:01Like arguments between people, fights, anything like that?
09:04No.
09:04That's why we were trying to figure out because he honestly, he's not that type of person.
09:08Right.
09:08He's really a happy-go-lucky guy.
09:10Mm.
09:11So...
09:12How's the relationship with the ex-wife?
09:13Is everything good?
09:14Yeah, they're fine.
09:15They recently just signed their papers.
09:17Okay.
09:18But it wasn't a heated divorce.
09:19It wasn't bad.
09:20Do you know him to be involved in anything bad like drug dealing or anything like that?
09:24Narcotics?
09:25Anything to that extent?
09:26No.
09:27He smoked a little weed.
09:28Okay.
09:31What about friend-wise?
09:32Who else would Rob hang out with?
09:34He was a ladies man.
09:35He hung out with different girls.
09:38He just had been going through some things, you know?
09:41Going through a new divorce.
09:42Yeah.
09:42Trying to figure it out.
09:44Okay.
09:45This summer, he allowed people to live with him.
09:48She gives to Schaefer the names of Rob's former roommates.
09:51Did everything work out when they got moved out or was it like a bad move out?
09:55It wasn't that good.
09:57It wasn't that good?
09:57No.
09:58Okay.
10:01This is wild.
10:02No.
10:02No.
10:02I know it's a lot for everybody.
10:05Thank you, man.
10:05This is much pregnant and no jealous.
10:13Do you know you need to comeow there?
10:14Thank you, thank you, thank you.
10:15As word of Rob's murder continues to spread.
10:18He's my watchmaker. He fixed his watches for me.
10:23The manager of the jewelry store where he worked shows up on scene.
10:36She says, last night, a woman picked Rob up from work.
10:44What kind of car are they left in?
10:46I don't know.
10:50So he left last night from work for the girl.
10:55But that's the last time she saw him.
10:59Then...
10:59You see that camera that's in the living room?
11:01...another possible break.
11:03There's a camera in the living room.
11:05Rob's neighbors remember that he has a security camera in his living room.
11:09Okay, let me go check that out. Give me one second.
11:17If that ring camera was on during the whole incident and just recording things, which would tell us exactly what
11:22happened and who did it, that would be huge.
11:35The camera's on because he's getting ring notifications on his phone.
11:40So we have high hopes for that.
11:48We're hoping it's been on since this morning, which means that it just would have been activating whatever happened inside.
12:04My name is George Robert Vantine Jr.
12:07I have been with the North Charleston Police Department for 23 years.
12:12I spent just shy of five years in the persons unit working violent crime and homicides.
12:20I'm honored with working in cold cases now.
12:23The department set up this unit to help bring justice to the victims and the families where the case agent
12:29has moved on.
12:30They've either been transferred out or they retired and the case still isn't solved.
12:36Detective Schaefer is transferred back to the road.
12:38So we're going to continue looking into Lowell Drive and pick up where he left off.
12:44It looks like a report.
12:46When Schaefer left the crime scene that night, his head was spinning.
12:53Probably had half a dozen potential motives.
12:56It could be a burglary gone bad because there is a window partially opened.
13:03There's been indications that he is a ladies' man.
13:06He's in his underwear.
13:08So it could be something with a lover's quarrel.
13:11The ex-roommate may have been involved.
13:14There was some type of argument.
13:18And then there is a female that picked him up from work and was the last person to see him.
13:24Once Schaefer goes home, even the ship starts running with it.
13:28Trying to get into the victim's phone.
13:31Maybe there's some indication of who that female that picked him up from work may be.
13:35Yeah.
13:44Seven hours in.
13:46Sam's got something.
13:48Digital forensics examiner Sam Riedel was downloading Rob's phone.
13:55I understand.
13:57And found a text conversation between Rob and the woman who picked him up from work last night.
14:03Amanda.
14:04You picked him up.
14:05Get her in here, see what she knows.
14:18Two hours later.
14:20Thank you for coming in tonight.
14:23Amanda agrees to talk.
14:25So how did you hear about what happened to Robert?
14:29I actually was, I looked on the news and I saw the shooting and I was like, oh .
14:36I sent my husband over there after he cut off work.
14:39OK.
14:40All right, so you saw him yesterday, correct?
14:43Yeah.
14:43I picked him up from work yesterday.
14:45It was about 10 till 6 and we went to the Publix to get a sandwich.
14:51And then where did y'all go after Publix?
14:54Right here, there's one.
14:57And once you guys were there, what happened?
15:00Oh, we smoked for a little bit.
15:03And we watched the OMTV raps and we ate our sandwich.
15:08Then we smoked some more.
15:10I don't know like why her husband would think it'd be cool if she goes to some other dude's house
15:15and smokes weed with him.
15:16And is he like jealous of their relationship?
15:19It's weird.
15:22And I took off at 9.30.
15:24He walked me outside.
15:27We didn't spend too much time outside because it was cold.
15:31He said, I love you.
15:34The last that I heard from him was last night when I told him I'm home.
15:37And he responded to the little hard thing.
15:40And roughly how long is the drive?
15:41About an hour.
15:43OK.
15:44And did he mention having any plans afterwards?
15:48No.
15:49I think he was going to go to bed.
15:51He had to work today.
15:53How did the two of you meet?
15:55And how long have you known him?
15:56Since April of 2016 in Northwoods Mall.
16:00She says she and Rob have been friends for eight years.
16:04We had a conversation about friends.
16:07The singer.
16:08And we've just been friends ever since.
16:17Have you and Rob ever had like a sexual relationship?
16:22No.
16:23So it's just friends.
16:24Exactly.
16:24OK.
16:26Is he, he's pretty cool with your husband?
16:28Oh, yeah.
16:29Absolutely.
16:36What was Rob wearing when you saw him last night?
16:40Um.
16:41I think it was a black long sleeve, just shirt that he had on.
16:47Jeans.
17:06And do you know what his relationship was like with the guy that used to live with him?
17:12No.
17:13But he was there for quite a while with his girlfriend.
17:16So what happened?
17:18I don't know.
17:19Honestly, Rob just referred to them as house guests and I didn't ask too many questions.
17:24The only thing that Rob seemed to be stressed out about is his neighbor smelling the weed.
17:32And we did talk about that because he had his, uh, he propped his sliding glass door open a little
17:37bit.
17:38So it would air out.
17:40Do you know if Rob kept that door open after you left?
17:42Probably.
17:43It made me nervous because he didn't lock things, that being one of them.
17:48Mm-hmm.
17:50You tell me that this isn't true, right?
17:54I'm sorry for your loss.
17:59One more second.
18:07Does sound like her and the victim had a good friendship.
18:12She says that her husband was cool with it.
18:15Um, we do plan on following up with the husband just to make sure that there wasn't any type of
18:20jealousy on his end.
18:23Yeah.
18:30From glancing at this, Schaefer did talk to Amanda's husband and it seemed like he was okay with his wife
18:37going over there, that he knew the victim and he didn't have any issues with him.
18:43He did not feel the husband was involved.
18:45So after the shift ended, they were no closer to a motive behind this.
18:51According to witnesses, Rob was a ladies' man.
18:55So Schaefer's plan was to track down the women he was seeing and track down the couple that used to
19:00live with the victim.
19:02And he also wanted access to the footage on the phone, a ring camera that was inside the victim's home
19:09that may have the possible suspect, which would have been huge.
19:26The next morning, Detective Parker Bush and Schaefer head out to try to find some of the women that Rob
19:33had been seeing.
19:35Could still be a chick, sleeping around with different women. Some chick could not like it.
19:39Well, that and then one of their significant other finds out.
19:43Yeah. And shows up there at the door going, hey, can I talk to you? And things go south.
19:48Yep.
19:54Then, hey, sir, how are you? The team gets a tip from Robert Brown's female ex-roommate.
20:05She says she suspects her ex-boyfriend, who was Rob's other ex-roommate, may be the killer.
20:19Okay. All right. Well, I appreciate it.
20:22No problem. All right. Take it easy.
20:28I'm seeing her boyfriend did it.
20:39I'm seeing what this chick has to say.
20:50Hey, how are you?
20:52What happened?
20:54I was introduced to Rob in July of this year.
20:58Me and my boyfriend were homeless together, and we stayed at his apartment.
21:01They knew each other from being rappers.
21:03Okay.
21:04Um, while we were there...
21:07She says while they were living with Rob, she and her boyfriend weren't getting along.
21:12How did it end with y'all and Rob and staying at his apartment?
21:19Rob texted me and said, hey, y'all, Journey will be back.
21:23Rob asked them to leave because his daughter was coming back to live with him.
21:27I left him.
21:28And shortly after they moved out, she and her boyfriend broke up.
21:33What makes you think he would be the one involved?
21:35Was there bad things between him and Rob when they were living there?
21:38We were homeless.
21:39At the point that I left him, he had nowhere else to go.
21:41So I'm assuming he did go to Rob's house at some point.
21:45I can't confirm that.
21:47Okay.
21:49My woman's intuition is telling me if he didn't do this, he knows who did.
21:53Right, right.
21:54Okay.
21:55What my intuition is telling me.
21:57Okay.
21:59He's been contacting me off of crazy different numbers.
22:02The first number was 472.
22:09Okay.
22:10We're going to continue investigating and go from there.
22:13We have to go based off where the evidence takes us.
22:15I know you said your intuition, but...
22:17I know.
22:17I know.
22:18Yeah.
22:20Rob did not deserve that.
22:22He was a sweet guy.
22:24He did not deserve that.
22:25No, 100%.
22:28All right.
22:28Thank you for your time, ma'am.
22:29No problem.
22:39It was basically woman's intuition that the ex-roommate may have been involved.
22:44But Detective Schaefer did a search warrant on the ex-roommate's phone.
22:50And during the timeframe of the murder, that person's device was in Florence, South Carolina.
22:57And I believe Schaefer spoke to that person on the phone.
22:59He was very cooperative.
23:01So I think he ruled him out.
23:06Detective Schaefer, in his notes and what he told me, seems like everyone he talked to,
23:11whether it be girlfriends, anybody, spoke very highly of the victim.
23:15And he got the sense that no one in the victim's social circle wanted to harm the victim.
23:22And everyone was baffled as to who would do this.
23:28Schaefer hit a dead end.
23:30And so, they had the Hail Mary of the ring camera.
23:33That was inside the victim's home.
23:35That would potentially give us some glimpse of who did it.
23:47as the first 48 slips away
23:50camera covers the living room
23:52Schaefer gets an update on the security camera
23:55in Rob's living room
23:57but the ring camera that was in there
24:00the plan is unactive
24:02which means it'll give you
24:04notifications and
24:05alerts but it doesn't record
24:08any of it is live view
24:12so there's no video of the actual shooting
24:14nope
24:16can't get freaking lucky
24:18on none of it
24:20bank square one on that
24:21felt too good to be true
24:26so yeah things are going well
24:27everything's coming together nicely
24:29and I mean that with the most sarcastic
24:31possible
24:45six days later
24:47number one
24:48I'm so sorry
24:49this is the worst way to meet someone like I said in such a situation
24:52Schaefer speaks to Rob's mother
24:55he didn't deserve what he got
24:58because the type of person that he was
25:00before I leave South Carolina
25:02I need to go home with some kind of closure
25:07yes
25:07I just leave it my child
25:09I want to help and tell you as much as I can
25:11but it is ongoing
25:12so there's a lot I can't tell you right now
25:15what I can tell you is this
25:16there's two possibilities
25:17it was either a random burglary gone wrong
25:20or it was someone he knew
25:40the team turns to Rob's ex-wife
25:43and daughter
25:45what's your name
25:47are you
25:48and you're
25:50did your dad ever mention
25:52that his house got broken into previously
25:56so tell me about that
25:58he told me someone
25:59he took his pocket money
26:01because he could keep like
26:03$50 in his pocket
26:04and he said it like
26:05on the TV stand
26:08okay
26:08and did he tell you how he thought
26:10the person was able to get inside
26:14they had a door in the mall
26:27that shit
26:28like what time of day did it happen
26:30when you just leave
26:32so night time
26:34yeah
26:34it was like 3 or 4
26:36so I was just like
26:37early
26:38you know what I mean
26:51he did get his stuff broken into
26:53a couple weeks ago
26:56and then I don't really see
26:59there's no calls for service over there
27:01so if he did
27:02he never reported it to us
27:04that's interesting
27:05we'll have to chase that down too
27:07they're just going to keep talking
27:08to more and more people
27:10we're hoping to get a bunch of video
27:12from the surrounding streets
27:13and the surrounding areas
27:15hoping that somebody's camera
27:16somewhere caught
27:17someone running from the scene
27:19that we could track
27:20or someone jumping in a car
27:21right afterwards
27:22we just need to get something
27:35four days later
27:36that food line
27:38I thought the parking lot
27:39the team watches
27:40surveillance video
27:41from the grocery store
27:42next to Rob's apartment complex
27:45the victim's building
27:47is right here
27:49and right there
27:50is like right by
27:51where the window's at
27:52we need like some video
27:53of somebody running
27:54from the scene
27:55or something
27:56otherwise
27:57it's like a
27:58date line special
28:01so far
28:02not a lot of luck
28:05then
28:09where the green thing is at
28:10a thermal image
28:12of somebody
28:13coming around
28:13from the backside
28:14of the victim's building
28:15at 4.15 in the morning
28:16right before the shooting
28:19we think the murder time
28:20is around like 5 a.m
28:22but this is about
28:2355 minutes before that
28:25this figure is just
28:26wandering around
28:31very suspicious to me
28:32because he's not
28:33going into an apartment
28:34he's not walking a dog
28:38he's just wandering around
28:39behind buildings
28:39in the middle of the night
28:41I think the temperature
28:42that night was like
28:4440 degrees or less
28:45so it was cold as hell out
28:46and you're wandering around
28:48at 4 o'clock in the morning
28:50so my curiosity is
28:51why are you doing that
28:55they're looking to break
28:56into somewhere
28:58that's what I was
28:58kind of getting a feel for
29:00like are they looking
29:00for open windows
29:01and the homicide
29:03he did have his window
29:04left open
29:05and his mother said
29:07that he did get broken
29:08into a couple weeks ago
29:20then I don't see him again
29:29and then this video
29:31we're getting is from
29:32right about here
29:34Schaefer pulls up
29:35doorbell footage
29:36they got from a neighbor
29:37down the street
29:38from Rob's apartment
29:40this is at 5 12 a.m.
29:43minutes after
29:43we believe the homicide
29:44occurred
29:45of an individual
29:46walking down the street
29:53Lowell Drive
29:54which is where
29:55the homicide occurred
29:56this could potentially
29:58be the same person
29:59from the video
29:59walking behind
30:00the apartment building
30:03this guy
30:04is a potential suspect
30:08I wish we had
30:08a post-worked up at him
30:11but
30:11he's our
30:12best lead so far
30:14as I could say
30:18it's possible
30:19that it was
30:19a burglar gone wrong
30:20just laying down
30:21if someone was trying
30:22to break in
30:23yep
30:30three weeks later
30:31hey Kaysen
30:33yes sir
30:33detectives Kaysen Alex
30:35and Carlos Ochoaia
30:37are working a case
30:38that they believe
30:39could be connected
30:40to Rob's
30:41so
30:42I have a
30:44rash of burglaries
30:45in the Forest Hills area
30:46um
30:47and
30:48is that the same area
30:49where the homicide was
30:50the most recent burglary
30:52occurred around
30:5310 o'clock last night
30:55he went into the window
30:56of their house
30:57while everybody was
30:57inside town
30:58and just stole all their stuff
31:00um
31:01the M.O. is that the same
31:02for this kid
31:03I dealt with him before
31:04um
31:05where he likes to break
31:06into people's houses
31:06while people are home
31:08Alex realized
31:09the M.O. of last night's robbery
31:11matched that of a juvenile burglar
31:13that he arrested
31:14three months ago
31:15he's a 15 year old
31:17on locked doors
31:18and windows
31:18that's where he goes
31:19the case I arrested him
31:21before back in September
31:23he broke in the house
31:24one of the roommates
31:25came home
31:25and he pulled a gun
31:27out on them
31:27when me and other detectives
31:29wanted to go pick him up
31:30he tried to pull a gun
31:31out on us
31:31but we were able to
31:32stop him
31:33before he was able to do it
31:34charges against the juvenile
31:36for the burglary
31:37three months ago
31:38were dismissed
31:39so
31:40he may be connected
31:41into the homicide
31:42because the M.O. is just the same
31:52the juvenile suspect
31:53it was definitely on the tree
31:54at the time
31:54Rob's murder happened
32:00so did she see the guy
32:01who broke it
32:01no
32:02the victim of last night's burglary
32:04was in her bedroom
32:06when it happened
32:16so then
32:17this morning
32:18a neighbor gives her
32:19a video footage
32:20she see two black males
32:22out of that video
32:26that she sees
32:27she identifies
32:28the juvenile
32:29the burglary victim
32:31recognized one of the suspects
32:32in the video
32:33from the neighborhood
32:34he's the same juvenile
32:36that detective Alex
32:37arrested for the previous burglary
32:40so we think
32:41this may be
32:41our suspect
32:42from the homicide
32:44it's possible
32:46the fact that he was
32:47willing to pull a gun
32:48out on three officers
32:49in uniform
32:50the fact that he actually
32:51did pull a gun out
32:52on my other victim
32:53and threaten her
32:54I feel he could
32:56he could escalate
32:57that point
32:58especially if he's
32:59inside somebody's house
32:59breaking in there
33:00and they catch him
33:01I wouldn't be surprised
33:03he'll do something
33:03like that
33:06unfortunately
33:07we don't have enough
33:07to arrest him
33:08for this burglary
33:13so the goal right now
33:14is to work on
33:15building the burglary
33:16case for those two
33:17we're gonna follow
33:18with the victim
33:18we're gonna go out
33:18to her house
33:19we'll start going
33:20around the neighborhood
33:20canvassing for video
33:21and then when we
33:22can get enough
33:23to charge them
33:24with the burglary
33:25we can pick them up
33:26and while they're up here
33:27talk to them
33:28about the homicide
33:33detective Schaefer
33:34in his notes
33:35and what he told me
33:35he wasn't able
33:37to develop
33:38enough probable cause
33:40or enough evidence
33:41for that one
33:42particular burglar
33:43to charge him
33:45and then Schaefer
33:46was beginning
33:47the process
33:48of being promoted
33:48out of the unit
33:50six months
33:51after Schaefer
33:52left the unit
33:53the property detectives
33:56Detective Kaysen
33:57ended up charging
33:58that juvenile suspect
33:59with yet another burglary
34:04when Detective Kaysen
34:05went to apprehend
34:07that juvenile suspect
34:08he had a backpack
34:10just like the suspect
34:12that is on camera
34:13walking back
34:14towards his residence
34:16minutes
34:17after the homicide
34:19so that's a strong
34:21person of interest
34:23so we needed
34:25to somehow
34:25find some way
34:26to convince him
34:27to come to City Hall
34:28to put him in a room
34:29then interview him
34:4113 months
34:42after Rob's murder
34:45that juvenile suspect
34:46just came in today
34:47to pick up some items
34:48from another case
34:50so a phone
34:51his backpack
34:52so I'm gonna try
34:53to interview him
34:54and see what he says
34:55see if we can get him
34:56to admit to this
34:58hey how's it going
35:00I'm Detective Vantine
35:03so you're looking
35:03to get some items back
35:04you're talking about
35:05like a backpack
35:06you're talking about
35:06a phone
35:07it's an iPhone 14
35:09okay Apple iPhone
35:10was seized
35:11and then you said
35:12it's a black backpack
35:15I got you
35:15how long you had
35:17that backpack for
35:21we had some burglaries
35:23in the area
35:24and I'm wondering
35:25if I'll show you
35:26a picture
35:26if you ever hit
35:27this place
35:28or remember it
35:35I know
35:35I know
35:36where he's at
35:36about a pool
35:37yeah
35:39December 3rd
35:40early in the morning
35:412024
35:42this place
35:44was broken into
35:47this window's open
35:48this was shattered
35:56the thing is
35:58I think you do
36:01you would go
36:02into like
36:03different places
36:03right
36:04and so I'm asking
36:06about this particular
36:06one
36:07get it off your chest
36:08what happened
36:14let me ask you this
36:15when you did
36:16these break-ins
36:17did you have
36:17someone with you
36:21what do you do
36:24how do you get in
36:25usually though
36:29you always go
36:30through like a window
36:36this window's open
36:37you ever go
36:38through this window
36:39and chill
36:54have you ever gone
36:54to a place
36:55where somebody lives
36:56while they're in there
37:02yeah
37:02well not
37:03not knowing
37:03they're in there
37:07when you go
37:08and to chill
37:09in these houses
37:09you usually have
37:10a weapon on you
37:13you were arrested
37:14with guns
37:15in the past
37:20right
37:36the phone
37:37do you know
37:38the passcode
37:38to that phone
37:39yeah
37:41he gives
37:41Van Tine
37:42the passcode
37:43I'm gonna be honest
37:44with you
37:44I won't be able
37:45to release it today
37:46that's for sure
37:46I just came here
37:47to get my stuff
37:48and I need to get my stuff
37:49and I don't like
37:50well I got you
37:51I feel you
37:54yeah you're good
38:04just denying denying
38:06he mentioned
38:07that he did
38:08usually go
38:08through the windows
38:09and this is
38:10entry through
38:11a window unsecured
38:13but I just
38:14don't have enough
38:14to say
38:15I don't have
38:15any DNA
38:16putting him there
38:17I don't have
38:17any video
38:18putting him there
38:19I got the passcode
38:20to his phone
38:21so we can do
38:22the phone dump
38:23so maybe there's
38:23something in the
38:24text message
38:24that will either
38:25rule him out
38:26or rule him in
38:32the burglary suspect
38:34that we just
38:34interviewed
38:34we didn't dump
38:35his phone
38:36unfortunately
38:37there's nothing
38:38to prove
38:39that he committed
38:40this crime
38:41but he is still
38:42a strong person
38:43of interest
38:44as far as
38:45the community
38:46maybe somebody
38:47knows something
38:47or he confided
38:48in somebody
38:49maybe someone
38:50has some
38:50crucial information
38:51that will help
38:52solve it
38:53I know
38:54this suspect
38:55commits burglaries
38:56from other
38:56juveniles
38:57maybe
38:58they will cooperate
39:00and they'll be able
39:01to come forward
39:02I think the thing is
39:04trying to never
39:04never giving up
39:05and just hoping that
39:07something will break
39:17unsolved cases are never close
39:23I'm gonna do everything in my power
39:25to figure out who did this
39:27Rob's life was taken
39:29thank you
39:30and so I feel it's important
39:32to let the family know
39:34we are still actively
39:35trying to solve it
39:36I remember him
39:38he was a nice guy to me
39:39yeah
39:40if it's been over a year
39:43or two years
39:44or three
39:44or ten
39:45or whatever the case is
39:46we're never gonna give up hope
39:48we're never gonna stop trying
39:49I'm never gonna quit on it
39:51never
40:01he made people laugh
40:02just by stepping in the room
40:05he was just that silly
40:09just proud of him
40:10you know
40:11never had nothing bad
40:12to say about my nephew
40:13I just can't wrap my mind
40:15around
40:16why somebody
40:17do that to me
40:20whoever did it
40:21they took something away
40:22from me
40:23that
40:24could never be replaced
40:25they took
40:26a daddy away
40:27from
40:28his kids
40:30it's been a struggle
40:38with Kingston
40:39he doesn't understand
40:42so he asks for him
40:44and I can't really explain
40:46why he's not there
40:49with Journey
40:50it's a different type of difficulty
40:52because she knows
40:54she's angry
40:55and upset
40:57because somebody
40:58took something
40:58so valuable
41:00away from her
41:01from all of us
41:04and I want to be able
41:05to look at the person
41:06in their eyes
41:08and ask them
41:09why
41:16Father God
41:17we gather today
41:18in honor of Robert
41:20hoping that this
41:21will bring justice
41:24somebody knows
41:26exactly what happened
41:27and I pray
41:28that their conscience
41:30will allow them
41:31to tell somebody
41:33so that we'll know
41:34who did it
41:35and why
41:36put yourself in our shoes
41:38what if it was
41:39your family member
41:40and you know
41:41somebody know
41:42wouldn't you want them
41:43to say it
41:45it will help
41:46a lot
41:46please and thank you
41:48whoever you are
41:49I know you know something
41:53in love and memories
