00:00Who doesn't love Anne Hathaway?
00:01Thank you for coming back to the...
00:03But you know when you have a moment,
00:04you're just like, oh, I'm gonna remember that forever.
00:05Thank you so much for that.
00:07Yeah, there you go. It just happened.
00:08Come on, the roots.
00:09Thank you. Hi, everybody.
00:11Thank you for playing Reverse Charades with me.
00:13You're a great partner.
00:14Thank you. You're a great partner.
00:16I mean, are you competitive when you play games?
00:18Do you play games at home?
00:19I don't mean to be.
00:20I know me neither. Are you?
00:21I don't mean to be. But then you saw over there.
00:22I was like, no, it's just a nice, friendly game.
00:24And then the last... I'm like, but the points are on.
00:26Like, it's on. Like, something...
00:27Let's go. I want to win this.
00:28Something takes over. I'm less competitive now.
00:31Why? Kids.
00:32Yeah. Yeah.
00:34I think maybe being competitive is genetic,
00:36because my kids are, like, they're competitive, too.
00:39And it turns out motherhood has softened me,
00:41and I like to watch them win.
00:42Yeah. My kids are very competitive, too.
00:45Well, my one daughter is, yeah. Yeah.
00:48The other one doesn't really care.
00:50It's like, it's fun, it's all good,
00:52but the other one really wants to win.
00:53And I don't throw the games, you know?
00:55I go... I scale. I really...
00:57And I play for money, too.
01:02Are you... Is there a party game
01:03that you're especially good at?
01:04Oof.
01:05Uh, it's... No, I mean...
01:07You know, I was playing a game last...
01:09We play a lot of... We play a lot of Pokemon,
01:11and we play a lot of Trouble and Sorry.
01:14But there is a game last... I was working last week,
01:17and I was on set, and we were just passing the time.
01:19And have you seen one of that movie trivia game
01:21where it's cards and it just asks you questions?
01:23Oh, yeah, I've seen, like, they have a bunch of quizzes,
01:25like sports and movies.
01:26Yeah, yeah. And I was just having one of those, like, runs
01:29where I couldn't miss.
01:30Yes. Like, I just knew.
01:31And I was, like, surprising myself, and it was like...
01:33Well, you know your stuff. You know movies.
01:34I didn't... I mean, apparently, I do.
01:36And then I got to this one question, and they were like,
01:40Oh, okay, so junior executive assistant in Devil Wears Prada.
01:43I'm just like, Emily Blunt.
01:45And they were like, No.
01:48And it wasn't her. It was me. So...
01:51I was going to say, wait.
01:53But I was genuinely confused.
01:54I was like, Wait, but it's her. It is.
01:56That was me, but I'm the... That's wild.
01:59See, when it comes to you... Yeah, so...
02:00Do you ever... Do you kind of do a project,
02:03and then you kind of block it out of your mind, or no?
02:05You just... It just so happens you...
02:07I don't know. I'm not huge on looking back.
02:10It is kind of funny when, like, because, you know,
02:12I was in this movie when I was 17 years old
02:13called The Princess Diaries.
02:18I watch you all the time.
02:20To this day, I watch you all the time.
02:22Really? My family loves you.
02:23We love you. Yeah, they love you so much.
02:26I love that it's become kind of one of those family touchstones.
02:29So, anyway, people quote it to me all the time,
02:31and I don't know what they're talking about.
02:33I don't remember that. I haven't seen it in a minute.
02:34But Devil Wears Prada, I recently saw a photo of you
02:38and Anna Wintour.
02:39You made your kind of Broadway debut together
02:41in Gutenberg, the musical. You guys stood up.
02:45There she is.
02:45Did the crowd go nuts?
02:48So, they... So, by the way, I have to say,
02:52that's Josh Gad, and that's Andrew Rana's little dear friends,
02:54and they were so brilliant in the show.
02:57It was really next level.
02:58And at the end of the show, they invite two people up on stage,
03:03and so they said my name first,
03:04and the audience had a very nice reaction,
03:06and then they said Anna's name, and it was, like, rock star.
03:09Really? Yeah, rock star. Everybody...
03:10Because you don't really see Anna do many things
03:13that are outside of her...
03:14Wear a trucker hat.
03:15Yeah, exactly.
03:16You never see Anna Wintour from Vogue wear a trucker hat.
03:19That's correct, yeah. But everyone just went nuts.
03:21She's also a New York icon.
03:23Oh, yeah. So, I think if she shows up at a pizzeria...
03:26Yeah, she's a New York icon. She's a worldwide icon.
03:27She's a worldwide icon. She's everything.
03:29Is she fun to share the stage with?
03:31Yeah. Yeah, really, really fun.
03:32And just...
03:34She's been incredibly sweet to me,
03:36and I'm just very grateful for her relationship.
03:39She's so cool, though. She's so cool.
03:40Do you get nervous around her?
03:41I get a little nervous.
03:43I absolutely do. You do?
03:44I have less to lose because I'm never going to be
03:46on the cover of Vogue, so I don't have nothing to worry about.
03:49But she likes me, and we've been friends for a long time,
03:51so I kind of... I'm comfy around her.
03:53I don't mean to... I try to keep it comfy.
03:55I try to keep it cozy, but inside my heart is...
03:58I just respect her so much. I'm just like that.
04:01But I feel very comfortable around you.
04:02Yeah, I'm good. You should be.
04:04You should be. I'm your bud. No, please.
04:07I totally... I got the respect and also the dig
04:10at the same time, so it was perfect.
04:12That's how well I know you. That's how cozy I am.
04:14Yeah, exactly. You know, I saw you, by the way...
04:16I was going to say on Broadway, but it wasn't.
04:18It was Shakespeare in the Park.
04:20You were there?
04:21Yeah, I came to see you. Absolutely.
04:22I'm a big fan, yeah.
04:24You did that. Were you nervous?
04:25I feel really bad about the dig now.
04:27You better keep digging me. Are you kidding me?
04:29Okay.
04:30Please, if you don't laugh at yourself and come on.
04:32I saw you and it was at the Delacorte Theatre.
04:37You were amazing. Do you get nervous?
04:38Does anything go wrong? Nothing went wrong when I saw you.
04:41Nothing went wrong? Thank goodness.
04:42No, you were perfect.
04:44So, the Delacorte Theatre is an outdoor theatre in Central Park.
04:48And so...
04:48You were doing Shakespeare.
04:49Doing Shakespeare, and it rained almost every night.
04:53And so... But it's kind of amazing, because every night,
04:55the last line of the show, which we actually sang,
04:58was, For the rain, it raineth every day.
05:00And so the audience at that moment always burst out laughing,
05:02and the whole show was so joyful.
05:04I had such a wonderful time.
05:05But one night, something... I don't know if it went wrong,
05:07but something happened.
05:10And so there's this scene, my character, Viola,
05:12she comes onto the stage, and I knew that the line was funny,
05:16but I couldn't figure out how to make it funny.
05:18So every night, I was just trying something,
05:21just anything I could think of.
05:22And I was, you know, go out there, audience wouldn't laugh,
05:23and I was like, tomorrow.
05:26And then one night, I went out there, and I said the line,
05:29and just the house went down.
05:31You killed it.
05:32Killed. And I was like, oh, I found it.
05:34This is such a good feeling.
05:36And I just like... And so then, of course,
05:38I leaned into it, because you do.
05:40And so I lean into it, and I'm just,
05:42the audience is losing their minds.
05:43I look into the wings. The cast is losing their minds.
05:45I'm high-fiving myself in my head.
05:48I'm just like, I've arrived. This is happening.
05:50And I get offstage, and I'm just like, well...
05:53And they go, did you see the raccoons?
05:57And I'm like, what?
05:59And then they just go behind you.
06:01As soon as you came onstage, a family of raccoons came out.
06:05They were so cute.
06:07Couldn't focus on the scene,
06:09because the raccoons were so cute.
06:10So I was like, well, actually, high-five to the raccoons.
06:15See, that's it. You got to work with everybody.
06:18Absolutely.
06:18You got to work. You play well with others.
06:20Let's talk about the idea of you.
06:22Oh, my gosh, buddy, the trailer alone has gotten
06:25over 125 million views.
06:27It crushed. Broke the record.
06:29Most-watched trailer of any streaming movie in history.
06:33Can we set up what the movie's about?
06:35Oh, sure, sure. The story's about Solène Marchand,
06:38who is a woman who lives in Silver Lake.
06:41She's a gallery owner. She's a mom.
06:43And she's got this really wonderful life,
06:46and she unexpectedly meets the lead singer
06:48of the biggest boy band in the world,
06:50a 24-year-old young man named Hayes Campbell.
06:53Yeah.
06:53And he thinks she's kind of great.
06:55Yeah.
06:56And so the story is about how they fall in love.
06:58Yeah, because you're just a mom,
07:00and you're chaperoning this thing,
07:01and you go to this thing, and then you see this boy band.
07:04I love hearing you describe my movie.
07:06Just a mom and this thing.
07:08I could do it. Yeah, your mom and this thing.
07:09That's how I describe it.
07:10I just, mom, you're just chaperoning,
07:12like a Coachella type of thing,
07:14like a giant outdoor festival thing.
07:16And the biggest boy band in the world,
07:18and then the lead singer.
07:19Oh, yes. So my character,
07:21my daughter's off watching St. Vincent.
07:23Yeah.
07:23Because she doesn't like the boy bands anymore.
07:25She liked them in seventh grade.
07:26But anyway, I have an backstage pass,
07:29so I'm an all-access thing.
07:31I have to go to the bathroom.
07:32Somebody tells me where the trailers are.
07:33I go, and I walk into the wrong trailer.
07:37Yeah.
07:38And the rest is hijinks ensues.
07:42Remind me of the actor who plays the lead singer.
07:45Nick Galatine.
07:46Oh, man. You guys have great chemistry.
07:48Did you know, when he was auditioning,
07:49you go, oh, this is the guy?
07:50Oh, yeah.
07:51Yeah. No, as soon as he...
07:53I actually burst out laughing when he walked in,
07:56because...
07:57Has anybody here read the book?
07:59No, we don't read.
08:02Well, you should. It's fabulous.
08:04It's the Tonight Show, yeah.
08:05You want to go...
08:07You want to go over to Stephen...
08:08You want to go to Stephen Colbert
08:10if you want to get people to read books.
08:13I'm going to read.
08:17You want to go over to Stephen Colbert.
08:17Lame.
08:18Well, you have an awesome book in store for you.
08:21It's written by...
08:22Lame-o.
08:23We do Audible here. We do that.
08:26We can do that count.
08:27I think it's time for you to date me to get me back in.
08:30Yeah, I know.
08:31Okay, so...
08:32It's based on this book.
08:34What's a book?
08:35Yeah.
08:36Too late. Not too late.
08:37But this is based on the big, best-selling book.
08:40Okay, well, the book does have a fan following somewhere.
08:44And anyway, I think the book's incredible,
08:47and Hayes Campbell is so beautifully written in the book,
08:49and so we knew that we just really needed to find
08:51someone really special, and he walked in.
08:52And he walked in. And I, yeah, and I just thought,
08:54oh, that's Hayes Campbell.
08:55And that was almost two years ago.
08:57Now Nick and I have become really good friends,
08:58and it's, yeah, it's opened up in this beautiful way.
09:00It's really great. I want to show everyone a clip.
09:02Here's Anne Hathaway in The Idea of You. Take a look.
09:05Oh, my God.
09:14Hayden.
09:17Are you a part of that ASMR community
09:19that gets off on listening to people pee?
09:20No, I...
09:21Because I don't think you can just go around assuming...
09:23It's actually my trailer.
09:25What?
09:25It's not literally mine.
09:27You know, I don't own it.
09:29This is your trailer?
09:30Yeah, I'm in the band.
09:31We're performing on the main stage,
09:33No, I'm...
09:36Hayes Campbell.
09:38August Moon?
09:39Yeah.
09:39Well, I absolutely know who you are.
09:43Um...
09:45Anyway...
09:47I'll...
09:50Yeah, come on. You know how to do it.
09:53Anne Hathaway, everybody!
