00:06It's important that we discuss this sooner rather than later
00:10I take it that means the results are not good
00:13Mom, you're scaring me
00:15Best Christmas picnic ever
00:17I cannot remember the last time I've had this much fun
00:20Newsflash, you are not the only one in that family who had an affair
00:24Then who?
00:26Vernon?
00:26Well, I thought we could squeeze in one more visit before the holiday
00:30I'll find a way to make something happen
00:33Good
00:35Who were you talking to?
00:37Just a telemarketer
00:38Well, nobody whispers to a telemarketer
00:40What's really going on, Sharon?
00:45Come on, Sharon
00:46That obviously was not a telemarketer
00:48So fess up
00:49Who was really on the phone?
00:53The biopsy confirmed you have breast cancer
00:58Okay, so
01:01What are we talking about here?
01:04The biopsy showed that you have triple negative breast cancer
01:09Triple negative?
01:12What does that mean?
01:14Triple negative breast cancer is an aggressive form of invasive cancer
01:18And it can be more challenging to treat than other types
01:21But there are treatment options
01:23And we'll talk through those together
01:49And we'll talk to you next week
01:52And we'll talk to you next week
01:52In the future
01:52We'll talk to you next week
02:01Thank you, thank you, thank you.
02:04It's not even crooked.
02:05So I did good.
02:07You did perfect.
02:08It's not too tall, too short, too fat, too thin.
02:10I would say it's just right.
02:13Okay, Goldilocks.
02:15You mean Leola?
02:16Leola?
02:17Leola and the Honey Bears.
02:19You never read it?
02:20Nah.
02:20It's wonderful.
02:21I used to read it to Naomi and Chelsea when they were little girls.
02:25It's this beautiful black version of that fairy tale by, oh gosh, Melody Benson Rosales.
02:31Yes.
02:32And it's about an independent, bold little girl, which as you can imagine, both of my little
02:37ones were.
02:38Never heard of it.
02:40But I do like picturing Naomi and Chelsea as little kids all snuggled up on your lap.
02:45That sounds sweet.
02:46It really was.
02:48In some ways it was a cautionary tale.
02:50Listen to your elders.
02:52But underneath, I always felt like it was really about the importance of family and community.
02:57Right.
02:58Because that is exactly what Christmas is about.
03:02Family and community.
03:04Yeah.
03:07Yes.
03:07Yeah.
03:08And having a better Christmas tree than everybody else.
03:13You are Larry's.
03:14I'm dead serious.
03:17This is going to be the best Christmas tree ever.
03:21It's a Christmas tree, Martin.
03:23It's not a competition.
03:24Have you met my family?
03:26Everything is a competition.
03:28Even tonight, Aunt Dani is throwing a competing tree trimming party.
03:33And I can confirm she's trying to bogart my mom and Kat from our guest list, even though
03:37I was the first one to send out the invitations.
03:39I love your mom and I love Kat, but maybe it's for the best that they're going to Danny's.
03:45It could have been uncomfortable given that Ted and Eva are coming here.
03:52It's true.
03:54Vernon is stepping out on Anita.
03:56I saw it for myself.
03:58Okay.
03:59Then tell me what you think you know.
04:01Eva was leaving my hotel room, right?
04:03And she forgot her gloves.
04:05So I opened the door, ran to tell her, and boom, there was Vernon and Sharon.
04:11And do you know that he walked into that woman's hotel room?
04:16Hmm.
04:17What's that proof?
04:18Nothing.
04:19She could have been visiting for Thanksgiving, but joining Anita at the bar for dinner, and
04:23Vernon was escorting her downstairs.
04:25The man is a gentleman, if nothing else.
04:28Gentleman my behind.
04:31Nobody was walking anybody anywhere, all right?
04:36Vernon and Sharon were getting busy.
04:39And what makes you so sure of that?
04:42I heard it.
04:44And what did you hear them say?
04:46That they didn't want to be seen together because people would get the wrong idea.
04:50Then I distinctly heard Vernon say, especially my wife.
04:56Could he have been joking?
04:58Absolutely not.
04:59And you know this because?
05:03Because I confronted Vernon at Winterfest, and he didn't deny it.
05:10Face it.
05:11Vernon is stepping out on Anita the same way you stepped out on the call.
05:23You have to wait for the guests to get here so we can decorate these first.
05:27Oh, look.
05:28Yes.
05:29Oh, nice try.
05:30Okay, so when is everybody supposed to get here?
05:33Oh, now.
05:34Oh, you better get that.
05:35No way.
05:36I am staying here to guard the cookies with these keys.
05:39Okay, I'll get the door, warden.
05:43Look, Samantha.
05:44Oh, I've always loved this ornament.
05:47Pop got it for our first Christmas year.
05:49Hey, everyone.
05:50Look who's here.
05:51Hey.
05:52Happy holidays.
05:54Happy holidays.
05:58Hi, June.
05:59Hi.
05:59Thank you so much for inviting me.
06:01I hope you like eggnogs.
06:04Sure, I'll have some.
06:06Thank you so much.
06:08Oh, I cannot tell you how warm and fuzzy it makes me feel inside that all of you have accepted
06:14me into your family.
06:16Warm and fuzzy.
06:17I like that description.
06:19Oh, you're decorating the tree?
06:22I have something for the two of you.
06:25Oh, well, thank you, June.
06:27We'll put them under the tree when it's done.
06:30It'll be great if you open them now.
06:35What are these?
06:36They're ornaments.
06:38The two of you made them.
06:43You make it tough to not at least consider what you're saying might be true, but...
06:50It is true.
06:51But you don't have to worry.
06:53Because I promised Vernon I'd keep my mouth shut.
06:56And you know better than anybody that I'm really good at keeping secrets.
07:01I mean, I kept ours for decades.
07:04So this information can be between you and me.
07:10Hell, it might even bring us closer together.
07:13Why would it do that?
07:15Oh, don't worry, Teddi.
07:17All right?
07:18I'm not trying to light any fires between you and me.
07:22Then don't call me Teddi.
07:24It's a bright red flag for me, Dana.
07:28All right.
07:29Ted.
07:30Ted, my friend.
07:32Because that is exactly what we are now, right?
07:36Besides, I have other irons in the fire.
07:39Good.
07:40I'm glad you do.
07:41Well, I'm glad you're glad.
07:43And I won't be pressing you to take me with you to Martin's party.
07:47First Johnson to bed 212.
07:49Besides, you and Eva need to have some father-daughter time.
07:52Mm-hmm.
07:52Enjoy yourselves.
07:54Mm-hmm.
07:55I have a question for you, Dana.
07:56Shoot.
07:57Why would you even bother to tell me your suspicions regarding Vernon and this supposed affair?
08:05Consider it a Christmas gift.
08:08I thought you'd prefer knowing about Vernon's hypocrisy.
08:17What is it that you're keeping from me, Sharon?
08:20Nothing.
08:21I swear, you're so suspicious.
08:24And you're a terrible liar.
08:25Always have been.
08:26Vernon, I don't believe you.
08:29I know what this is about.
08:31I already told you what it's about.
08:33Nothing.
08:34You told someone about Anita's health scare.
08:36I would never do that.
08:38The vulture confidence like that.
08:41Anita made it very clear that she was telling us about the biopsy in private.
08:46And Vernon doesn't even know anything about it.
08:49And he certainly isn't going to hear about it from me.
08:52Hear about what?
08:56So what kind of breast cancer is this?
08:59What does triple negative mean?
09:03I think it would be best for you if you take your phone out and record the rest of our
09:07conversation.
09:08Because what I'm about to tell you can be a lot to take in.
09:12And then this way you can review our session later or share it with your family.
09:15And if you have any other questions, you can contact me.
09:18I'll be available to you day or night.
09:25First, there are some informational things that you should know.
09:29Black women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with this type of breast cancer than white women.
09:34And unlike most breast cancers, triple negative cancer cells don't have estrogen or progesterone receptors.
09:40And they also don't make much of the HER2 protein.
09:43And that's why they call it triple negative.
09:45What it does do is grow and spread faster than other types.
09:49It also, sadly, has a high recurrence rate.
09:57I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.
10:00I know.
10:01It is a great deal of information to process.
10:05But when it comes to treatment, time really does matter.
10:09There will be some important decisions to make and we're going to need to make them fairly quickly.
10:13I'm assuming that you are on board with moving forward with treatment?
10:20Yes, of course.
10:21Okay.
10:24So, where do we begin?
10:26Is there a process, a leader, a team?
10:31Yes, to all of the above.
10:33I'm going to get you set up with an oncologist who will do some further testing.
10:36And then a group of cancer specialists called the tumor board will go over your case together and figure out
10:42the best next steps.
10:44You'll then be assigned a nurse navigator who will set you up with your cancer care team.
10:48They will get you set up with scheduling for deport placement for chemo and so forth.
10:57Vernon, what are you doing here?
10:59That's my question, Sharon.
11:01Since I live here and you don't, what are you two even doing in town, huh?
11:07It's always wonderful to see you, but to what do we owe the pleasure?
11:12We came to surprise Anita for Christmas.
11:14Ah, well, I don't see my wife.
11:18Was she so surprised she took to her bed?
11:22Vernon, you and your jokes.
11:24Seriously, where is Anita?
11:27She went to the hospital to get some test results from her vision test.
11:34She got results from her vision test a few days ago.
11:38Did I say vision?
11:40Tracy means hearing.
11:42Anita said that she was going to get the results from her hearing test.
11:45And maybe you should get your hearing tested too, Tracy.
11:49Maybe I should.
11:52Hearing test.
11:54Okay, you two.
11:57Anita's probably told you to keep a Christmas secret so I won't push.
12:03If you'll excuse me, please.
12:05Is there a restroom this way?
12:06Right down the hall.
12:07Okay, thank you.
12:11Vernon, why didn't you tell me you were on your way back home?
12:15Why didn't you tell me you were at my house alone with Tracy?
12:19Look, it doesn't matter now.
12:21We covered and Tracy is totally in the dark and so is Anita.
12:26Nobody knows what's going on between us.
12:29That's not exactly true.
12:31What?
12:32What do you mean?
12:34Somebody saw us together.
12:37Cindy!
12:39You're alone.
12:41I'm a little disappointed.
12:42I thought you'd change your mind and invite Carlton.
12:45Oh, I thought about it.
12:47But he did already have plans.
12:49Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
12:51Well, we'll just have to make do without him.
12:53We should still have a pretty big crew.
12:54Why?
12:55Is there a reason you're trying to have a big group here?
12:57For Andre.
12:58I wanted to make things festive for him.
13:00That's why I encouraged everyone to bring a plus one.
13:02Happy holidays, Mom, Aunt Nicole, Andre.
13:07Merry Christmas Eve, honey.
13:09Where's Jacob?
13:11Who cares?
13:13Sweetie, what's going on?
13:14Did something happen between you and Jacob?
13:17I guess you could say that.
13:19We're not speaking.
13:24Honey, I thought things were getting better between you and Jacob.
13:27When you started going to couples therapy, genuinely seemed like things were looking up.
13:31You're right.
13:32Things were going better.
13:34Great.
13:34In fact, we spent a wonderful romantic evening together just last night.
13:37So what changed in such a short time?
13:39I don't want to ruin your Christmas sparkle with my sob story.
13:42We can talk about it later.
13:44Okay.
13:45I won't press.
13:47This party is seriously shrinking.
13:53Ugh, Chelsea.
13:55More shrinkage.
13:58You kids made these when you were just little bitty things.
14:02My sister Regina kept them at her house, and she gave them to me when we reconnected.
14:08I thought you'd like to have them.
14:11They're so cute.
14:13I don't even remember them.
14:15Do you?
14:17Did we make them at school?
14:18You did.
14:19You were so proud of yourselves.
14:23But being who I was back then, I didn't get you a Christmas tree like I promised to make happen.
14:31So there was nowhere to hang them.
14:37Anyway, you were devastated.
14:40Maybe you just couldn't afford to buy a tree.
14:44That's a kind thought.
14:46But I probably had the money.
14:49I'm sure I just spent it.
14:51A little while after that, I made the call to CPS.
14:57I guess I knew you'd have a better chance without me.
15:04It's the hardest thing I've ever done.
15:08But seeing your lives now, I know it was the right thing for you.
15:14You deserve to grow up in a house with a Christmas tree.
15:19With loving parents who could provide for you.
15:26Martin and Smitty, I am always grateful to you.
15:32Your decision was our good fortune, June.
15:37Don't feel bad, June.
15:39Okay, we're fine now.
15:41Both of us.
15:43Smith's right.
15:46We can all see the work you've done to turn your life around.
15:49Changing yourself and the way you do things.
15:53It's not easy.
15:56I'm proud of you.
16:01And if it's okay to say, I forgive you.
16:13I hope it's okay that I let myself in.
16:15Eva, Merry Christmas Eve.
16:17I thought you were coming with Dad.
16:19Oh, I told him I would meet him here.
16:21I didn't mind showing up alone once I found out Kat wouldn't be here.
16:24And where do you get that idea?
16:28Of all the people in this town, Barbara's daughter saw us together?
16:34And she's convinced we're having an affair.
16:37What did you say to us?
16:39Nothing.
16:40That woman's a troublemaker.
16:42I wasn't about to dignify her accusations with a response.
16:46What if she tells Anita?
16:48She claimed that she can keep it quiet for now.
16:52But can you trust her?
16:54Oh, hell no.
16:55But at this point, I don't have much of a choice.
16:58So, Sharon, what do you think?
17:00Maybe we should leave Vernon's house.
17:02He's probably got a ton to do.
17:04You are welcome to stay until Anita gets back from the doctor.
17:08No, we've got to get going.
17:10We'll talk to Anita later.
17:12Bye, Vernon.
17:13Ladies?
17:16Going forward, I recommend you bringing a support person with you to all your appointments.
17:20That way they can take notes and ask questions,
17:23and that'll allow you to focus solely on processing what's happening in the moment.
17:28A support person.
17:30Talk to Vernon.
17:33I will take that under advisement.
17:35You have every right to feel overwhelmed.
17:38I just dropped a bomb in your life and flooded you with facts.
17:42Do you have any questions for me right now that I can answer for you?
17:46Not at the moment, but I'm sure I will.
17:50Actually.
17:57May I have a moment alone?
17:59Of course.
18:00But just a reminder, as you mull all this over,
18:04we're going to have to act quickly to begin treatment.
18:08Yeah, absolutely.
18:09Let's have at it.
18:11All right.
18:13I'll go get things started.
18:31Did Chelsea give a reason?
18:32She just said she and Madison can't make it.
18:35Oh, that's too bad.
18:36I really want her to catch up with them.
18:37And Kat seems to be a no-show as well.
18:39Well, we'll just have to celebrate enough for everybody.
18:43We may only be four people,
18:44but we're about to be the four best tree trimmers in all of Fairmont Crest.
18:48So grab some ornaments and let's get busy!
18:53Ah, talk to Auntie Nicole.
18:54Tell me what's happening between you and Jacob.
18:56Can't be that bad, can it?
18:58I guess not.
18:59See?
19:00We're already making progress.
19:01It's worse.
19:02What on earth happened?
19:04I can tell you what happened.
19:05We're all ears, son-in-law.
19:08Yeah, go ahead.
19:09Tell them.
19:10First of all, Naomi snooped through my things and found her Christmas gift.
19:13I was looking for a shoehorn, okay?
19:15It was an accident.
19:16A shoehorn.
19:17Sweetheart, I'm not buying it.
19:19But even if Naomi accidentally saw her Christmas gift, why is she mad?
19:24Because it sucks.
19:25He put zero thought into it, not to mention, it's ugly.
19:29Is it?
19:30No, it's not.
19:31But here, I'll let you all be the judge.
19:35What the heck is that?
19:37This is a chenquito.
19:40Chenquito?
19:40Yeah.
19:41It's a Mexican monkey hat that sprays water.
19:43Here, I'll show you.
19:44Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
19:45Don't you dare.
19:46Not here.
19:46Not tonight.
19:47In fact, not ever.
19:48Come on, it's interesting and it's cute, right?
19:50Nah, it's pretty ugly.
19:51Thank you, Aunt Nicole.
19:54Interesting question.
19:55Why do you ask?
19:56That means she hates it in shrink talk.
19:58Andre.
19:59Mm-mm.
20:00Bro code.
20:00I'm neutral.
20:02Shouldn't we give Jacob the benefit of the doubt?
20:05It's unusual, but isn't it the thought behind the gift that matters?
20:09Well, that's exactly my point.
20:10I put so much thought into his gift, but that thing?
20:14Listen, when I'm trying to rock a hat, I'm aiming for Aretha at the inauguration.
20:17Not some tacky novelty monkey.
20:19And you should know that by now.
20:24I just thought you want a souvenir.
20:26A souvenir of what?
20:27The Christmas I sprayed water on my family and pissed them off?
20:31Of Mexico City.
20:32This hat is one of the most popular souvenirs for tourists, and he's just a messenger.
20:37Messenger?
20:37What?
20:38Yeah.
20:40I got you a Mexican vacation.
20:43Surprise?
20:46Merry Christmas Eve.
20:48Thank you so much.
20:49You just slide him under the tree.
20:51Oh, Smitty.
20:53I fasted for two days just so that I could have some of your fantastic eggnog.
20:58Help yourself.
20:59And Eva, please do not wait to be asked.
21:03Make yourself at home.
21:04Thanks, Smitty.
21:05And I don't think you've actually met June, the kid's mother.
21:08June, this is my sister, Kat.
21:10Hello, Kat.
21:11You are very beautiful.
21:13Thanks.
21:14I've seen you around Orphe jeans.
21:16Nice to meet you.
21:18Officially.
21:20Sis, I'm a little confused.
21:22I thought you were going to Undani's.
21:23Well, I'll get there.
21:25But I had to drop by to see my niece and nephew.
21:30I'm so excited about your cotillion.
21:32I love mine.
21:33What was that like?
21:35It was like real-life fairytale, but with better lighting.
21:39Show up and slay.
21:40Well, I'm not going to lie.
21:42There is work involved.
21:44Rehearsals, dances to learn, posture to perfect,
21:48etiquette boot camp.
21:50But you get to pick your gown and your shoes and your escort.
21:56Lots of prep, but it's a dream.
22:00Hi, everybody.
22:01Hey.
22:02Kat.
22:03What a terrific surprise.
22:06I'll bet.
22:06Don't worry.
22:07I'm not staying long.
22:08Oh, well, glad I got to see you.
22:11So, what are your Christmas plans?
22:13Oh, simple.
22:14I'm going to sit around and watch football.
22:17Okay, I'll give you a call.
22:19Okay, Louise.
22:21I have to tell you about the message.
22:23I'll go get you back.
22:26Eva, I am sorry.
22:28I didn't know Kat was going to be here.
22:32No worries.
22:33If I can't be in the same room with my half-sister,
