00:02but this time he decided to do things his own way.
00:05This is where our story really starts to pick up steam.
00:08Kirk had come up with the idea to produce self-locking plastic bricks
00:12that would allow children to build all sorts of amazing things.
00:16But while the idea seemed simple, turning it into a reality would not be.
00:21Like any good entrepreneur, he spent two years developing the perfect design,
00:26and once he felt it was ready, he filed a patent for his invention.
00:30He named his company Lego, a combination of the Danish words Legengott,
00:35which translates to Playwell.
00:37The very first Lego brick was produced in 1949,
00:40and the following year, the company started exporting its products to other countries
00:45throughout the next decade.
00:47Lego became more and more popular around the world,
00:50and Olkirk was able to grow his business even further
00:52by hiring more staff and opening a new factory.
00:55However, he was never satisfied with simply resting on his laurels
01:00and always looked for ways to improve and expand his product line.
