00:00I'm here in Cebu, Philippines for the ASEAN Summit 2026.
00:18ASEAN leaders wrapped up the 48th ASEAN Summit with discussions dominated by regional energy security,
00:24food supply resilience, and the safety of ASEAN nationals amid growing global uncertainty
00:30triggered by the Middle East conflict and the Myanmar crisis.
00:35Hosted by the Philippines under the theme Navigating Our Future Together,
00:39the summit saw leaders pushing for faster implementation of long-delayed regional agreements
00:45as concerns grow over rising fuel prices, supply chain disruptions, and economic pressures across Southeast Asia.
00:54Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged ASEAN nations to strengthen cooperation in facing the crisis.
01:01It is a stark reminder that in an increasingly uncertain world,
01:07we call for our collective action and it has never been more urgent.
01:13So we must continue to uphold the principles of ASEAN centrality and solidarity
01:18and pursue practical cooperation.
01:22Among the key proposals discussed were regional rice reserves, energy cooperation frameworks,
01:28and the possibility of an ASEAN oil stockpile to cushion future supply shocks.
01:34Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said there had been major progress in latest discussions on Myanmar,
01:41with ASEAN foreign ministers expected to begin discussions within the next one to two weeks
01:46on possible engagement mechanisms with NEPIDAR.
01:50So there is a more possible, I think, likelihood to engage.
02:00But not the final resolution, I mean it takes time, you see.
02:18The summit additionally focused on accelerating regional projects such as the ASEAN power grid,
02:25digital integration, and customs coordination to improve economic resilience across the block.
02:31Some of the other key highlights include the ASEAN observer team will continue to monitor the ceasefire
02:38between Thailand and Cambodia for another three months
02:41as the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability.
02:46Anwar had also called on ASEAN to fully leverage its cooperation with the Gulf Corporation Council and China
02:53for regional energy security while urging faster implementation of the ASEAN framework
02:58on the Petroleum Security Agreement amid ongoing disruptions caused by the West Asia crisis.
03:05Leaders also reaffirmed the need to fast-track negotiations on the South China Sea Code of Conduct
03:11between ASEAN and China while keeping discussions free from external interference.
03:17Yesterday, analyst Julia Rocknefard of Taylor's University urged ASEAN countries to prioritize diversifying
03:24their energy sources rather than relying solely on diplomatic efforts with the conflict likely to persist.
03:31It would be wiser for ASEAN, including Malaysia, to diversify its energy sources.
03:37China, with its massive refining capacity, is already a major player in the energy expert market.
03:44This is simply about pragmatism and energy security, not politics.
03:48A diversified supply chain is the only realistic path forward.
03:53Meanwhile, geopolitical analyst Azmi Hassan of Academy Nusantara said
03:57ASEAN must strengthen collective action beyond statements as risks to key maritime routes grow,
04:03warning that even the bloc's own waterways could face emerging disruption threats.
