00:00And the president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, is on an official visit to Taiwan,
00:04which has generated considerable dissatisfaction within the Chinese government.
00:08Our correspondent in China, Bruno Falsi, with the details.
00:13Greetings, comrades.
00:15From here, Beijing, during a press conference held by the Chinese Foreign Ministry,
00:20the spokesperson, Li Jian, addressed the visit of the Paraguayan president, Santiago Peña, to Taiwan,
00:28an action strongly condemned by the Chinese government in accordance with its one-China principle.
00:36Paraguay remains the only South American country to maintain official relations with the island,
00:45which Beijing considers an inalienable part of its territory.
00:50This relationship, supported by economic cooperation and international assistance from Taipei,
00:58is rejected by the Chinese government, which seeks to consolidate its diplomatic position globally,
01:08a position supported by the vast majority of states and by the international law.
01:15Let's listen now to the words of Li Jian.
01:18The one-China principle is a basic norm in international relations and a prevailing consensus
01:25among the international community, and 183 countries have established diplomatic ties with China
01:31on the basis of the one-China principle.
01:33China urges the Paraguayan authority to stand on the right side of history at an early date
01:37and make the right choice of recognizing the one-China principle
01:40and severing the so-called diplomatic ties with the Taiwan authority.
01:45Taiwan is a strictly internal matter tied to China national sovereignty.
01:52From a historical perspective, there are records of Chinese administration of the island dating back to ancient dynasties,
02:01which has solidified its political and cultural ties over the centuries.
02:07The current situation is framed by the period of the violent Japanese occupation of the island,
02:15that endured for 50 years, until 1945, and the outcome of the Chinese civil war,
02:24after which the Kuomintang nationalist government, lagged by Chiang Kai-shek,
02:28retreated to the island in 1949, giving rise to the present situation.
02:35This framework is based on the United Nations General Assembly Resolution of 1971,
02:43which recognized the People's Republic of China,
02:46the sole legitimate representative of the China in the United Nations,
02:52thus closing any parallel international representation within the multilateral system.
03:00From Beijing, here, with this news, we'll go back with you in the studios.
