01:04I love you.
01:05Thank you so much.

01:08Welcome, welcome, welcome to The Tonight Show!
01:11You're here, you're meeting.
01:14You guys seem like you're in a good mood.
01:16I think I know why.
01:17Today is 420.
01:18Uh, great.
01:19It's not?
01:20I feel you're happy.
01:21Yeah, all day long,
01:23the air in New York City
01:24smelled exactly like it does
01:26every other day of the year.
01:29Yeah, 420 is a huge day
01:30for Venmo transactions
01:32that are labeled utility bill.
01:35Let's get to some news.
01:36Well, guys, the war continues on.
01:38Of course, I'm talking about
01:39the one between President Trump
01:41and Pope Leo.
01:42Following their feud,
01:44Pope Leo said that
01:44debating Trump
01:45is not in my interest at all.
01:48Yeah, I think the Pope
01:49is tired of dealing with Trump.
01:50Let's just say today
01:51there was a different smoke
01:51coming from the Vatican.
01:54Happy 420.
01:56And get this,
01:56after Trump spent the last week
01:57fighting with the Pope,
01:58he's about to take part
01:59in a public reading
02:00of the Bible
02:02from the Oval Office.
02:04He wants to practice a little,
02:05so we'll help him out.
02:06I'll start the Bible verse,
02:08and then the President
02:09will finish it.
02:09All right, let's try that.
02:10Here we go.
02:12In the beginning,
02:14God created the heavens and...
02:16Burger King, Wendy's,
02:18and McDonald's.
02:24Though I walk through
02:25the valley of the shadow of death,
02:27I will fear...
02:29The Epstein Files.
02:37For God so loved the world
02:40that he gave us
02:41his one and only
02:42magnificent,
02:44big,
02:45beautiful
02:45ballroom.
02:48Give us this day
02:50our daily
02:51Viagra.
02:56Do unto others
02:57as you would have them
02:59do unto...
03:00What to do?
03:01Or do they know
03:02what to do?
03:03That's even scarier
03:04if they do know
03:05what to do
03:06and they're not doing it.
03:10God said,
03:11let there be light.
03:12And there was...
03:13No!
03:14Get those lights off!
03:15Off!
03:19Last one.
03:21In the name of the Father
03:22and the Son
03:23and the...
03:24Easter buddy.
03:25All right.
03:26Keep practicing.
03:27Keep practicing, Steve.
03:32Very close.
03:33So close.
03:35While everyone's talking
03:36about this over the weekend,
03:37Trump announced a deal
03:38to reopen the Strait of Hormuz
03:40and within 12 hours,
03:41it fell apart
03:42and is now closed again.
03:44Nobody knows
03:45whether the Strait of Hormuz
03:46is open or closed.
03:47It is basically
03:48the Toys R Us of Water Wave.
03:50I thought you were
03:50out of business.
03:52You're back?
03:53Is Toys R Us in business?
03:55No.
03:56But they were, right?
03:57Yeah, for about a day.
03:58Like last week.
03:59Yeah.
04:01Yep, Trump hasn't been
04:02this annoyed
04:02with the famous Strait
04:03since Mike Pence.
04:05Hi-ho!
04:07Hey-oh!
04:08You take that one
04:08home with you.
04:09Come on,
04:09that's a good one.
04:11Yeah, you got it.
04:11It's all yours.
04:13And now Trump
04:14is sending a delegation
04:15to negotiate a peace deal
04:16with Iran.
04:17And we actually got
04:18an exclusive audio
04:19from behind closed doors
04:20of Trump deciding
04:21who to put
04:21on the negotiating team.
04:23Mr. President,
04:24who do you want
04:24to send to Pakistan
04:25to negotiate?
04:26Kid Rock?
04:27No.
04:27Yay?
04:28No.
04:28Diddy?
04:29No.
04:29The DoorDash Grandma?
04:30No.
04:30William Shatner,
04:31Priceline Negotiator?
04:32No.
04:33Pam Bondi?
04:33Fired.
04:34Kristi Noem?
04:35Fired.
04:35Kash Patel?
04:36About to be fired.
04:37Don Jr.?
04:37Yeah, Dad,
04:38you need me?
04:38No.
04:39Oh, sir,
04:39what if we sent
04:40the Vice President?
04:41All right,
04:41what's his name?
04:42DJ Tanner?
04:42No.
04:43JK Rowling?
04:44No.
04:44P.F. Chang?
04:45No.
04:45L.L.
04:46Cool J?
04:51Me, too?
04:52No.
04:52Oh.
04:53There you go.
04:53That's it.
04:54You got that.
05:01Well, get this.
05:01Trump announced plans
05:03to build a sculpture garden
05:04with 250 statues
05:06for America's 250th anniversary
05:08this summer.
05:09But sources say
05:10it's unlikely
05:10even one statue
05:11will be ready in time.
05:13Yeah, they won't have
05:14enough time
05:14to make the statue,
05:15so they're just going
05:16to put Mitch McConnell
05:17out in the lawn.
05:21Weird.
05:22You guys see this?
05:23Today,
05:24FBI Director Cash Patel
05:25filed a $250 million
05:27lawsuit against
05:28The Atlantic
05:29over a report
05:30on his alleged
05:30heavy drinking.
05:32I don't think
05:33it helped his case
05:34because he said,
05:34I'm suing you
05:35for $250 million
05:36dollaritas.
05:37Oh.
05:41Wow.
05:42You see how
05:43it would hurt his case?
05:44Yeah, man.
05:45Because he said,
05:47he said in the case
05:48that he would sue
05:49for $250 million
05:51dollaritas.
05:51Oh, like a margarita.
05:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:53The famous drink special.
05:56The famous drink special
05:57from Applebee's?
06:01Applebee's?
06:01Yeah, Applebee's.
06:02By the way,
06:03we went to Applebee's
06:04the other night.
06:04How was it?
06:05It's fantastic.
06:07Applebee's is unbelievable.
06:09The one in Times Square
06:09has got like four floors.
06:11We went to the fourth floor
06:12of Penthouse, dude.
06:13Really?
06:13The Penthouse at Applebee's?
06:15Unbelievable.
06:16Shout out to Applebee's
06:17in Times Square.
06:17They're the best.
06:18Love them.
06:19They're the best time.
06:20Pretzel sticks.
06:21How many dollaritas
06:22did you have
06:23before you ate?
06:24What's that?
06:25How many dollaritas
06:26did you have
06:26before you ate?
06:27I did have two of these
06:28like backyard
06:29blackberry something.
06:30They came in
06:31like a goldfish bowl.
06:34I had to add an Uber
06:36to my Uber.
06:37Mmm!
06:38Dollaritas.
06:39But then I forgot
06:39they do have that drink.
06:41It's like a margarita
06:41or something with a beer
06:42in it.
06:43Yeah, beer-arita.
06:44Fantastic.
06:45Wow.
06:45I had one years ago
06:47at Bubba Gump.
06:48At Bubba Gump,
06:49yeah.
06:50Bubba Gump,
06:51they make those, yeah.
06:51They make a beer-arita
06:52at Bubba Gump.
06:53Bubba Gump,
06:54fantastic place.
06:57What kind of shrimp do they have?
06:58They ask you,
06:58film trivia.
06:59What kind of shrimp do they have?
07:00Oh, they have Cajun shrimp.
07:01Yeah.
07:04What else?
07:05What other kind of shrimp?
07:08Shrimp?
07:08I can't go into it.
07:11We can't afford to take lines
07:12from that script.
07:14But I do,
07:15I love Bubba Gump.
07:16I used to love,
07:17I was obsessed with
07:19theme restaurants.
07:20The All-Star Cafe,
07:21do you remember that one?
07:22Yeah.
07:23Like all these sports stars
07:24opened up this place.
07:25I sat by myself
07:25in a giant baseball glove table.
07:29It was so funny.
07:30You sat in a baseball glove?
07:32It was a giant baseball glove table.
07:34It was empty.
07:35They were going out of business.
07:35So I just went,
07:36I go,
07:36I was right there.
07:37I sat right in the mitt.
07:39Right.
07:41Your ball sat right there.
07:42That's great.
07:45Let's change this subject.
07:46All right, yeah.
07:47Guys, reality dating shows
07:49are huge right now.
07:49You guys like those?
07:50Dating shows I love.
07:53The one thing I've noticed
07:54they all have in common
07:55is the type of music
07:56that you hear in the show.
07:57Well, here to break that down for us
07:59is reality show songwriting duo
08:01Jeff and Steph.
08:02Welcome to the show, guys.
08:03Thanks for having us.
08:04Thanks for having us.
08:05Uh, no.
08:07What can you guys tell us
08:08about writing music
08:09for these kinds of shows?
08:11Well, Jimmy, honestly,
08:12there's a bit of a science to it.
08:14A formula, if you will.
08:15Oh, interesting.
08:16Would you mind
08:17demonstrating that for us?
08:18Oh, absolutely.
08:20Here's how you write a song
08:21for a steamy, sensual scene
08:23you'd see in
08:24Love is Blind or Love Island.
08:26Okay.
08:28First you sing a melody
08:30that sounds like this.
08:31First you sing a melody
08:33that sounds like this.
08:34Then you add a beat
08:36that sounds like this.
08:38Poo-ch.
08:39Poo-poo-poo-poo-ch.
08:41Then there's a big build
08:42followed by silence
08:44where you say something
08:45provocative like
08:48love is a scorpion.
08:50Poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo-poo.
08:55Thanks for that.
08:58Guys, what does love
09:00is a scorpion mean?
09:02Nothing.
09:04It doesn't matter
09:05what you say right there.
09:06All that matters, Jimmy?
09:08Vibes.
09:09That's fascinating.
09:10Well, what if the scene
09:11is more romantic or sweet?
09:12oh you want romantic and sweet easy that goes a bit like this you sing this one a little slower
09:21then you hear a twinkly piano then it starts to build because the people are in love
09:29and you leave them space to kiss
09:35then you say love is a scorpion
09:39i'm sorry i'm sorry hold on a second i'm just i'm sorry wait what what is it what is it
09:46jimmy
09:46love is a scorpion again i we can't help if it works jimmy if it ain't broke yeah so you
09:52just
09:52say that at the end of all these songs kind of i'm sorry but we have to move on no
09:59no wait
09:59jimmy can we can we do one more please this one is different we promise
10:04there's no love is a scorpion no no no no we promise no okay this is like this is like
10:10grand finale two contestants have found love epic okay i like this take it away
10:16this one is super upbeat and you say the word forever so the viewer is hopeful and then you do
10:23a chant like oh oh oh oh oh oh oh and everyone feels good about the outcome of the show
10:30and the
10:30credits start to roll this is great guys and one last time you say love is a scorpion
10:47well some business news gatorade announced that they're planning to remove artificial colors and
10:52reduce sugar in their drinks oh yeah it's part of the revolutionary new beverage line called water
11:01and finally before we move on i'd like to take a moment to thank some of our sponsors for tonight's

15:24and so i go i gotta be part of it so the producers are genius over there
15:27they send me these ideas i go yep so i'm part of an advantage
15:30that's cool
15:31and then quinta something goes down
15:34yeah
15:36it's gonna be nuts i can't talk about it but
15:38this is so like not exciting when you can't tell me what it's like
15:42that's i know i feel like i'm in a marvel movie yeah i can't talk about it
15:46but have you watched in this season
15:48so no because i need to save it to the end i was introduced to survivor as a binger
15:53and i think when you're introduced that way it's kind of hard to watch week from week
15:56so i the first season i saw i think was like heroes vs villains
16:01and then i guess the audience isn't into that
16:04no yeah yeah
16:05i don't know if you guys are like wow

16:14and i also just think it's the greatest reality show
16:16i don't watch much reality tv
16:18it's fantastic
16:19i think it's fantastic
16:20the psychology of it
16:21yeah
16:21i love though i love everybody that the casting is great
16:25yeah
16:25they do such a great job you got to get into traitors
16:27would you play would you play
16:29would i play survivor
16:30yeah
16:30never
16:30yeah same
16:31i i couldn't do any of the challenge i can't stand on a thing
16:35i'd be shaking immediately
16:37but as you know there are smarter ways to play like
16:39i wouldn't play because i know i wouldn't win
16:41i would come in i would be in the final three but i wouldn't win
16:44why
16:45i think it's good to know when you won't win something
16:49you just know you'd make it far but you wouldn't win
16:51yeah but you know how mike white he can't win because they know that he's rich
16:55and so they're not gonna give him that million dollar prize which is good
16:58they shouldn't give it to him
16:59yeah
16:59because he's too rich he doesn't deserve it
17:01yeah
17:02he's a great producer of television and film guy
17:04yeah
17:05he just wants to play the game
17:06he just wants to play
17:07quinta the other thing that we have in common is we both have honorary degrees from colleges
17:11uh that we we dropped out of
17:13yeah

17:16we do so
17:17how long did you last

17:49philly in the house
17:52whoo
17:52okay
17:53did you recently just launch a quinta brunson field trip fund in real life
17:57i did
17:58talk to me about this i love this idea
18:00yeah it's really really beautiful so field trips were a big part of my uh childhood my
18:05education
18:06yeah my niece and nephew told me that they didn't take a lot of field trips during their primary schooling
18:11years
18:11they were affected by the covid uh the pandemic and so i think the last maybe four years of my
18:19niece's school weren't even in school so field trips were going away funding for them was going away and um
18:25i just thought how could i help and the easiest way to help was to start a fund that i
18:30immediately donated ten thousand dollars to to kick it off um and posted it
18:35that's so cool
18:38that's so cool
19:34some kids had
19:35oh
19:36oh yes
20:05i did
20:05hey you need to get janine and gregory back together
20:07and i was like
20:09okay
20:10she was like uh-huh
20:11have fun on you in new york but do what you gotta do
20:15okay so it's it's just been the first time it's right at my face but i appreciate that
20:20oh yeah i want to show everyone a clip here's quinta brunson in the season finale of abbott elementary take
20:24a look
20:25just because you have a fight doesn't mean you're not supposed to be together
20:28gerald and i we've had many a fight where to live how to raise the children and
20:33some of his nastier relatives
20:37honestly your fight it's
20:39lightweight
20:40and i know it's hard
20:41but if you love someone you really care about them then you owe it to each other in your relationship
20:47to work these things out together
20:49i know
20:50but we can't
20:51every time we try to talk it out it feels like something just grabs a hold of me
20:56and it feels like it's the most important thing in the world
20:59yes
21:00yeah i've been there
21:01right and when you tell a man that something's important and he doesn't give it to you that's when you
21:04walk away
21:05wait what who taught you that
21:08life barb life
21:09yeah that's right
21:12quinta brunson everyone
21:13the season finale of abbott elementary airs this wednesday at 8pm on abc and stream on hulu
21:21more tonight show after the break stick around everybody
21:29i had a special guest it was a big ask and i thought it would be met with a no
21:34but i'll be damned if i didn't get kermit the frog to
21:40now that's him on the right not the left
21:52our next guest is a tony and emmy winning performer who stars in the six-time tony award-winning best
22:00musical
22:00maybe happy ending which is playing at the belasco theater please welcome darren chris
22:18that's right
22:20that's right
22:21come on welcome back to the show thanks man it's always great to see you looking sharp thanks man i
22:32get to be on fallon this is a special thing
22:34no come on also by the way it was an honor to meet your wife finally backstage
22:37oh the the woman behind the magic yes finally she's awesome real deal
22:41uh i was lucky enough to go see this great play maybe happy ending
22:45there it is uh and you were
22:47thank you for coming i know there's a lot there's a lot of airlines to choose from so we appreciate
22:52you choosing the maybe happy
22:53yeah i had the greatest time i went with uh with my daughter frannie went to go check it out
22:59so cool man and it was the best and then you were so nice to us that you gave us
23:04the time
23:05and talked to us after the show and you must be exhausted after that oh man it's so invigorating i
23:10mean i think you relate to this i think we're both excitable
23:12guys when we get excited about things it is a genuine thing and um we're just about to pass 600
23:18performances of this thing and i
23:20it's amazing it's a huge milestone and i feel the same way about it every time that i do that's
23:26not
23:26that's not a canned line to to sound cool like i genuinely love the piece and so when people i
23:32admire
23:32and appreciate you know people who's who's output and you know thing in life is inspiration is inspirational
23:38to me it's fun to get to share that with people when they come to see the show so i
23:41thank you i really
23:43really love doing it i only have four more weeks left i'm i'm a little bummed about it
23:47but the show will still be running so do yeah go see the show we got four weeks ago if
23:51you want to see
23:51garen uh but by the way you you got tony's uh congratulations on this but also you just got
23:57honored you got your own portrait at sardis now we're talking yes yes now we're talking yeah that's uh
24:05you know contrary to things like the tony's which obviously is a massive massive massive honor especially
24:11for theater kids this is kind of a special superlative because it's not competitive you know it's just a
24:15celebration you're not up against anybody which is some you know it's its own subjective you're just
24:20being honored yeah being honored by and it's and theater has so you know it's like being in new
24:24york there's so many like traditions that people have that are very specific to new york life and
24:29sardis portraits if you guys are unfamiliar it's like an old school new york thing and you know the
24:33first time i came to new york by myself i went because i love the muppets take manhattan i'm a
24:38huge
24:38muppets fan yeah so there's this whole bit where like kermit goes in there masquerading as like a
24:45producer and he's got like a pencil you know mustache yes and uh he takes down liza minnelli's
24:50portrait and he puts his own and he sits underneath it and tries to you know kind of be an
24:54important
24:54yeah be an important producer so they can get their show produced and i always thought that was so cool
24:58it's the first time i ever seen what sardis was so by the time in my early 20s i'm like
25:00i go on this
25:01pilgrimage to go to sardis and go see that portrait which is still up at sardis yeah well here's the
25:07thing that i love about the the the they do it so well they have they honor you they they
25:11unveil
25:12the portrait uh and then usually someone will come out and say something nice yeah yes thank you for
25:17that segue i had a special guest it was a big ask and i thought it would be met with
25:21a no but i'll be
25:23damned if i didn't get kermit the frog to now that's him on the right not the left that's kermit
25:30the frog
25:31and on the left that's my one of my great heroes my my favorite actor is mr sam rockwell who
25:36who
25:36actually made me my own portrait so with no disrespect to the portrait they gave me he he
25:41drew his own thing that now is sam operating kermit with the other hand who knows we don't know
25:47i think it's the other way around i think uh how did he's operating sam rockwell uh wait two magical
25:53people yeah i mean those people mean a lot a lot a lot to me and it was uh you
25:58know it's a silly thing
25:58but my love language as i said at the sardis thing my love language is silly silly traditions and so
26:03it
26:03really meant a lot to me to have those two legends incredible legends be there for me and uh i
26:07agree
26:07congratulations from the dream thank you to go back to the sardis it's an amazing thing go to sardis if
26:12you're in new york city and go look at all and go see darren's portrait on the wall uh i
26:16want to talk
26:16about the show just in case uh anyone wants to run out and you got to get tickets to go
26:20to this and
26:20you know what the tour is going out this fall too so if you don't necessarily come to new york
26:24if you
26:24want to go look online we're going on tour i won't be there but the show will be and i
26:28have to say if
26:29i'm familiar with the show the star of the show and i think you can co-sign on this is
26:32the show
26:32it's unlike anything you've ever seen i would encourage you to know as little as possible
26:35it rewards that we didn't know anything going in yeah in this day and age to actually not know
26:40anything about something and be like surprise and go surprise and dude uh i i it packs a punch
26:45i'm trying to keep it yeah because my daughter's right next to me i was like
26:49yeah it's a beautiful but in a good way in a good way don't cry don't cry no it's a
26:53good cry
26:53sweetest and a sweet sweet love gosh i loved it and man you could sing and it was just everybody
26:58so talented on that thing and just the way it looked to the stage direction the moving there's
27:03a lot there come see for yourself i've never seen anything like it uh but how do we explain who
27:08you
27:09play i play um it's a tough i think all my favorite stories in the world the ones that we
27:13really love
27:14are the most difficult to pitch yeah the absence of anything being like it so because it is a singular
27:19it sounds weird but it's about uh it's in the not too distant future you have two helper bots not
27:24unlike your digital assistants on your on your phone except they're more humanoid um they're
27:28retired helper bots that have been kind of like put out to pasture and these kind of waiting for
27:32their owner yeah or or to or just to reach the end of their battery life and uh so there's
27:38some
27:38parallels to life itself and how we go through this world in our own limited battery life but we look
27:42through at it through the lens of these helper bots and uh it's a lot more fun than it sounds
27:48dude they decide to to break out of this uh institution and find some of their former
27:53owners and i promise you it's much more hopeful than jimmy's jimmy's faces uh the songs are catchy
27:58it's funny it's so it's very romantic and beautiful and fun and i play a robot i play a robot
28:04i should
28:04that's probably not a small detail to glaze over uh but how many years have you been doing is it
28:09two
28:09years i've been doing it yeah almost i feel like a year and a half yeah and we came here
28:13and we got to
28:13i'd always want dude i've always wanted to do like a number on fallon i got to do it yeah
28:18you were
28:18forget saris and like oh i got to come here and do a live musical theater performance on tv i
28:24mean
28:24thank you for doing that come on we know we love it wow we're so grateful come on darren chris
28:29right
28:29there come on that's how you do it maybe happy ending is playing now on broadway at the belasco
28:34theater we'll be right back with more tonight everybody come on back

29:30taylor welcome welcome welcome to the show thank you for having me uh congratulations on the pit
29:37oh my gosh is it a giant hit we love it uh everyone loves your character dr mel king one
29:45of the most
29:45beloved characters on television i would say congratulations on that thank you very much
29:49uh how does it feel to be part of a giant hit show um it's definitely odd yeah i think
29:55because
29:55you know as an actor we expect to not ever work and if we do it's like oh my god
30:00that's great
30:01and then we expect it to end and so i think the whole that people are actually watching it
30:06thing is just kind of new yeah it's fantastic good people
30:11do you do you watch the show week to week would you ever watch yourself
30:15i i don't really like watching myself but i i have to because my mom wants me to tell her
30:22when to
30:22not look wait your mom wants you to tell you when to not look yeah so i have to sit
30:27next to her
30:27and like poke her to look down and then look up again watching the show like the gory parts
30:33yeah all the gore and it's funny because she'll get really mad at me if i miss it if i'm
30:37like a
30:38little late i'm like oh sorry don't look and she'll get mad at me i'm like i wasn't in the
30:41scene i don't remember what happened i wasn't there mom to do that yeah i can't now you have
30:46to watch the show and then watch it again with your mom yeah yeah of course uh there's one scene
30:49uh in particular from last week's finale that as everyone was talking about uh this is you doing
30:55karaoke uh that was fantastic dr king dr trinity santos you were singing alanis morissette's you
31:03ought to know and you crushed it thank you uh when you when you first read this scene in the
31:08script
31:08what's your reaction well it actually wasn't in the script and so uh at the last episode we're all
31:15like doing our charts and scanning and um shredding stuff and isa was sitting across from me and she
31:21goes what are you going to wear for the karaoke thing and i was like i don't what care what
31:28you're
31:28talking about this is a medical drama um i don't know if you know that yeah um and she was
31:35like
31:35there's a thing coming up and it wasn't in the script and i got the script and i read it
31:38i'm
31:38like what is happening and then i asked scott who created our show scott gemmel and he's like oh yeah
31:45we might do something and that's like all i got we might do something do you do karaoke in real
31:50life
31:51no i'm afraid to sing you're afraid to sing i'm afraid to sing yes really so if you went to
31:57a
31:57car you wouldn't go to a character i wouldn't but i feel like there's something that it's different
32:01when it's like a character yeah and it's not really me i don't know why but i've been told i
32:07was a terrible singer for a lot of my life wow wow it's good to get it out i just
32:13think it's funny
32:14no well dude you did pretty great in this thing and alanis morissette i will tell you that
32:19you gotta feel the angst in fact alanis morissette herself posted patient dr sentence dr king
32:27you got the thumbs up you got the thumbs up for the one and only alanis morissette come on
32:35that's gotta feel good everything that's gotta feel good it's amazing yeah i just got a text from
32:40isa that said we did it and then it was that screenshot and i was like yes yeah you do
32:45such
32:46a great job on the show uh i always love it when anyone's on a medical show i have them
32:49on the show
32:50and i go do you know any terms have you do people treat you like a doctor i ask you
32:55questions and
32:56hey will you look at this yes which is always like you don't want anyone to just say i have
