00:00A cruise ship that's been afflicted with a deadly Hantavirus outbreak
00:03has been refused docking in the South Atlantic Ocean.
00:08If the passengers are healthy and there is no risk of infection,
00:12it makes no sense for them to have to travel to the Canary Islands to be repatriated.
00:16The Spanish authorities overseeing the Canary Islands
00:19opposed the ship's docking in Cape Verde,
00:21leading to a high-stakes quarantining and heavy anchoring between May 4th to 6th.
00:27Authorities from multiple countries have been so far
00:30unable to trace all the passengers who disembarked the ship
00:32before the virus was detected.
00:35Our working hypothesis is that there's different types of transmission happening.
00:39Clearly we've had some kind of rodent exposure,
00:41whether that took place before the people got on board.
00:45Passengers began falling ill around April 6th, 2026,
00:49with the first death on board occurring on April 11th.
00:53An Australian has been reported amongst the 23 people
00:56who left the ship at St Helena on April 21st, 2026.
01:01Those who remain on board the vessel have been forced to isolate
01:05under strict hygiene protocols to stop any spread of the virus,
01:09which is believed to have an incubation period that lasts several weeks.
01:14One passenger that disembarked is now in hospital in Switzerland,
01:17having now tested positive for the virus.
01:21Meanwhile, another passenger has been taken to intensive care
01:24in a hospital in South Africa.
01:27At the time of reporting,
01:28there had been three deaths tied to the outbreak.
