User-generated footage published on May 5 by YouTuber Kasem Ibn Hattuta offers a rare inside look at life aboard the MV Hondius, where three deaths have been reported since April 11.

In the video, the passenger recounts the sequence of events on board, describing how the situation unfolded as concerns grew over a possible health threat. Despite the alarming reports, he later stated in comments shared with Agence France-Presse that passengers have remained calm while awaiting further action.

The ship, which departed from Ushuaia and was en route to Cape Verde, has been under a health alert after the World Health Organization was informed of multiple deaths potentially linked to Hantavirus.

00:00I am currently reporting from this infected ship, where three people have already died from a dangerous virus spreading on
00:06board.
00:06Shortly after we reached the first island of our journey, an elderly passenger's health began to deteriorate,
00:12and we were all deeply shocked to receive the news of his passing about 12 days into our voyage.
00:18We set off from the island, and two days later, another person on the ship started showing symptoms of illness.
00:25We stopped on the way at an island called Ascension and performed a medical evacuation for them,
00:30then continued on our way to our final destination, Cape Verde.
00:34I am currently reporting from this infected ship, where three people have already died from a dangerous virus spreading on
00:41board.
00:41Global news outlets have all covered this as an impending pandemic for the future of humanity.
00:45But what is the actual truth? What is it that really happened to us?
00:49Let me tell you the story.
00:51Our journey by ship began in southern Argentina, and the plan was to cross the Atlantic Ocean,
00:56stopping at some remote islands to see the nature and wildlife.
00:59Our trip would end in Cape Verde, Sadia and the Sab and the Se on the African continent.
01:06That landmass lying directly ahead of us is Cape Verde, but we are not permitted to go ashore.
01:12Shortly after we reached the first island of our journey, an elderly passenger's health began to deteriorate,
01:17and we were all deeply shocked to receive the news of his passing about 12 days into our voyage.
01:24The body was evacuated at the second island on our route,
01:27but unfortunately, two days later, we received news of the death of his wife, who was with him on the
01:33trip.
01:34We set off from the island, and two days later, another person on the ship started showing symptoms of illness.
01:40We stopped on the way at an island called Ascension and performed a medical evacuation for them,
01:46then continued on our way to our final destination, Cape Verde.
01:50A few days before we reached our destination, another passenger's health deteriorated, which also led to another death.
01:57Meanwhile, we received the test results for the person we medically evacuated a few days ago,
02:02and it turned out they had Hantavirus.
02:04The problem right now is that two other people on the ship started showing symptoms,
02:10so the ship decided to head at full speed to the final destination to get the patients to the hospital.
02:17But what happened is that Cape Verde, where we are currently,
02:21refused to perform a medical evacuation for the patients,
02:24and refused our presence in their territorial waters altogether.
02:28Today was supposed to be the last day of our 35-day journey across the Atlantic Ocean,
02:33but it is clear that our journey will not end here,
02:37because Cape Verde has refused to receive us on its shores.
02:41What Cape Verde has done so far is send their own doctors to take samples from the patients on our
02:46ship,
02:46but they haven't reached a conclusion or made a decision yet.
02:50Most people on the ship are taking it quite calmly, contrary to what's being said on the news.
02:56For starters, there's only one confirmed case of someone having the Hantavirus,
03:01and secondly, even if it is confirmed that the Hantavirus is the cause,
03:05the risk of infection is very low.
03:09It's believed that the first person to die on the ship was the one who brought the virus on board,
03:13and in one way or another, infected some of the other people on the ship.
03:17Ultimately, this isn't a new virus to the world.
03:19If it were going to become an epidemic, it would have happened a long time ago.
03:25But at this moment, what is happening is that the news is blowing things way out of all proportion.
03:30I truly hope that I have answered all of your questions in this video.
