China's zero-tariff policy brews new opportunities for Ethiopian coffee exports
Transcript
00:06The export to China in general has grown significantly in recent years with annual export values now exceeding half a
00:16billion dollars.
00:17Coffee, one of Ethiopia's key exports, played a critical role in driving that growth.
00:25China is one of the fastest growing coffee market, especially for Ethiopian markets.
00:32It was five, six years ago, very small quantity, two, three thousand tons.
00:37Now it passed above fifty thousand tons per year exported to China.
00:44Track on Coffee, one of the leading coffee exporters in Ethiopia alone, exported more than ten thousand tons of coffee
00:52to China in 2025.
00:54The CEO, Mr. Said Omar, is optimistic that the zero tariff announcement for African exports by the Chinese government could
01:02further accelerate the growth, benefiting coffee farmers, exporters in the country at large.
01:09For example, one of the biggest competitors in the world living coffee is Brazil.
01:13So Brazil coffee goes to China, there is eight percent tax duty, plus there is VAT.
01:20Now, Ethiopia coffee goes to China, it is zero.
01:24It will be cheaper to buy Ethiopian coffee.
01:27It means Ethiopian coffee and African coffees in China market will grow.
01:32Exporters will demand more coffee from the farmers, then farmers have the ability to increase some prices, so that it
01:39is great news for the farmers, great news for Ethiopia, great news for exporters.
01:45Despite growing exports, the trade balance between Ethiopia and China remains heavily skewed in China's favor and experts say the
01:53zero tariff policy could help narrow the gap while strengthening existing investment and trade partnerships between China and Africa.
02:01One way to overcome this trade deficit from the perspective of African economies is exporting African goods to the Chinese
02:11economy free of tax, free of tariffs.
02:16So the zero tariff announced by the Chinese government will improve the trade balance.
02:24China is offering a real option and a real alternative for African economies in terms of exporting their goods and
02:34this further strengthens the already existing bilateral partnership between Africa and China and of course African member states and China
02:48on individual basis.
02:51China has long been a major investment and trade partner for Africa.
02:56In Ethiopia, nearly 50% of the country's foreign direct investment is linked to Beijing.
03:03Now the zero tariff policy is expected to not only boost export trade, but also strengthen this partnership.
