00:05Mathewson's auctioned more than 700 classic cars, bikes and trucks every month.
00:10If you can't find something in here, you don't want one, do you?
00:13Lovely, ain't you?
00:14At their garages in Yorkshire, our television crews have been trying to understand their business.
00:21You'll get the hang of it soon. You've only been around us for five years.
00:24I'm going to have to educate them a little bit.
00:26But that hasn't stopped us taking a risk on classics close to our hearts.
00:35It hasn't got a plan, but it's gone exactly how it always does.
00:39She's about knackered.
00:40Technical Yorkshire term, is that?
00:43That's how the cookie crumbles.
00:45So far, the experts have done us proud.
00:48It's the best I've ever seen, to be honest.
00:50Encouraging stuff.
00:51I love it. I absolutely love it.
00:52You have to start somewhere.
00:54Absolutely brilliant.
00:55But buying and selling these iconic cars isn't getting any easier.
01:00Oh, I'm feeling really sick.
01:02I'll stop after this.
01:03I think we can make money.
01:05The worst thing you can do is think that you're going to make any money out of it.
01:08You're saving another vehicle.
01:09You're performing a public service.
01:11It's the only way you can look at it.
01:11You've actually kept a bit of originality there.
01:14Well done.
01:14Well, we're in the farm.
01:15This is going to be painful.
01:26This week, we're saving a four-door family saloon with a fire-breathing flat four under the bonnet.
01:33Vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom.
01:34They make a nice day on them.
01:36But 25 years of British weather has caused a few issues.
01:40That was your inner upper arch.
01:43In terms of holes, then not.
01:45Oh, yeah.
01:46She's a good one.
01:46A fairly good natural one.
01:48And we bought a Yamaha renowned for...
01:51Style.
01:52Reliability.
01:53You press the button and they set off.
01:55But unfortunately, ours is not playing to type.
01:58There's something wrong back as flash a walk turned off.
02:01Horns on went once and that's packed up.
02:04No lights, no dash lights, no winkers, no brake light.
02:09But we have got a spark.
02:10Well, it's not bad, is it?
02:11One out of five.
02:17Living in North Yorkshire requires a practical vehicle to help deal with the challenging terrain
02:22and unpredictable weather.
02:24What would a Matthewson choose?
02:26They're not over it yet.
02:27They're still in America.
02:28But the Ford Everest, which is basically a Ford Ranger version of that, but not a pickup.
02:35But it's like a family SUV and they look really smart, dressed up nicely.
02:38So let me get this right.
02:39If you were driving around in North Yorkshire, you'd want to drive around in a four-wheel drive Ford Everest.
02:44Ford Everest.
02:45That's only available in America.
02:47Yes.
02:48I would get myself a Land Rover Defender.
02:51Simple as that.
02:51Not one of these new ones.
02:52I'd get an old one.
02:54Predictable.
02:55If money wasn't an issue, I think it would have to be a Range Rover.
03:01But I think these days, overall, it would probably be the Toyota Hilux.
03:05They are bulletproof.
03:06There's no question about it.
03:07So we were on the hunt for a practical, sensible four-wheel drive.
03:12And then we saw this, a Subaru Impreza Turbo.
03:25Overnight, the Impreza transformed Subaru from farmer favourite to rally icon.
03:31Yet this stage winner was also capable of going shopping and taking the kids to school.
03:39Unfortunately, the scoops, skirts and spoilers made them magnets for tacky modifications and police pursuits.
03:46So to find a standard straight one like this is very rare.
03:58Launched in Japan in 1992, the Subaru Impreza gained significant traction in the UK with the Turbo 2000 model, boosted
04:06by Colin McRae's 1995 WRC win.
04:11It offered race car performance at a low price, with superior grip and handling, due to its all-wheel drive
04:16system and unique flat-four boxer engine, famously producing that distinctive sound.
04:24There was also a massive aftermarket for tuning and styling, solidifying its cult status and appeal amongst young car enthusiasts,
04:31who wanted a moddable, fast car.
04:36This combination of genuine rallying DNA, affordable performance and everyday usability, created a dedicated fan base and made the Impreza
04:45a true automotive icon.
04:51This 1999 Turbo 2000 model is the one we've got our eyes on, but Paul's already picking out work.
04:57What's a bonnet, look?
04:58Oh, what's wrong with a bonnet?
05:00It's creased, it's blown up, look.
05:02Oh, where?
05:03Where?
05:04You're having a laugh, aren't you?
05:06Straight through the middle of it, look.
05:08I suspect...
05:10Bonnet's been hot.
05:11Bit of rot on that back quarter there, look, what's doing?
05:14Lacquer off there, look, what's doing?
05:16Yeah, what's that on the...
05:17A bit of, there, look, what's doing, to be fair, that's going to be a welding job, that, innit, which
05:22is why the bumper's all glued up, look, because she'll be rotten in there.
05:25But, it stands nice, doesn't it?
05:27It's not all saggy and it's not lowered, loads of people lower them, it's awful, innit?
05:31Just leave them alone, you know.
05:33So, it doesn't look as though it's been mollycoddled too much, does it?
05:38Or messed with too much, I mean.
05:40Which is a good place to start.
05:43Originality is key.
05:44He's going to have to turn his flat cap round for this one.
05:47Here we go then, £2,000 I've got here, £2,200, £2,400, £2,600, £2,600, £2,800, £3
05:57,000, £3,000, £3,000, £3,000, £3,000, £3,000, £3,200.
06:05$3,200, going to Devon, £3,400, £3,400, £3,400, £3,400, £3,400, £3,400, £3,400, £1
06:12,300, £1,000, £3,000.
06:12Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, this is good.
06:13Come on, John, John, John.
06:14Come on.
06:14Fair warning.
06:16Hey, John, John!
06:18John, you have bought a Subaru Forester.
06:20Brum, brum, brum, brum.
06:21They make a nice sound then.
06:22Yeah, well, we hope it does.
06:23If it starts.
06:26Time to find out.
06:28And where better to take it than Scooby Clinic,
06:31a garage that's been working on Subarus for over 35 years.
06:35Kevin Knight is in charge.
06:37Give me the worst-case scenario and the best-case scenario
06:40when you buy a used one.
06:44Well, the worst-case scenario's got to be a UK Turbo 2000.
06:49It's lived in the UK all its life.
06:52Therefore, it's suffered all the winters that we have
06:55and the bad weather, salt on the roads, et cetera.
06:59It was going so well.
07:00Whereas an import is generally come from a warm country like Japan
07:05and they're usually pretty mint, to be honest.
07:09Mark is Kevin's right-hand man
07:10and what he doesn't know about Subarus isn't really worth knowing.
07:14The whole reason I ended up here is because as a kid
07:17I used to play Columbus Credit Rally on my PlayStation.
07:20A red classic.
07:22Oh, all right.
07:23Yeah.
07:24Just as I heard there were a garage setting on that did Subaru,
07:27it was our done.
07:27So I just started to come here and I've been here ever since.
07:31Kevin, you said a UK car is the worst car that you could possibly buy.
07:34That is one.
07:36Oh, she's gone.
07:37What?
07:38What?
07:39That's a hole.
07:40What have you done?
07:41I can't say.
07:43It's mostly just fell off.
07:45Sorry, it just fell off.
07:47You've stuck your arm through it.
07:49Didn't need much pressing.
07:51Is that a common area?
07:53This is the problem because the water's getting in.
07:56There's an hole in there I can get my hand in.
07:57So they go up the top inside.
08:00Yeah, in there.
08:05Not sound too bad.
08:11Mark, you better tell me who we've got helping you out then.
08:15Dave.
08:15Main man Dave on the job.
08:17Kevin's already found two holes, so...
08:19Oh, right, OK.
08:20Well, we have our good friend.
08:23Oh, God.
08:24Why is it every garage I go to has got a good friend
08:27and it usually involves a pokey, pointy, brakey stick?
08:30You've got to see if it's structurally sound, haven't you?
08:33You know?
08:33And that's the way you do it.
08:36Right, well...
08:38It's quite rare for them to be mouldy.
08:40They normally just rot, but it's just mouldy.
08:43So this car has been sat around.
08:45It actually sat around for about five years.
08:47That makes sense, yeah.
08:49So that would tally with the mould, wouldn't it?
08:50Yeah, definitely.
08:52Those have been a bit damp.
08:53But, I mean, most of the bits and pieces are here on this side.
08:58We've got a destroyed heat shield on the turbo.
09:02Why have we got a destroyed heat shield?
09:04Quite a bit of corrosion on water pipes on the engine.
09:08But nothing too serious.
09:12I have just found something.
09:15Go on, Dave.
09:16What have you found?
09:17Your shock absorber.
09:19It hasn't got one.
09:21Well, it's there, but it's not all there.
09:24Just there.
09:25There's a hole.
09:26There shouldn't be a hole.
09:29In terms of holes, they're not.
09:32Oh, yeah, it's a good one.
09:33A fairly substantial one.
09:35I can hear something, Dave.
09:36I don't want to be hearing.
09:38Oh, it's raining.
09:40What was that?
09:41That was your inner upper arch.
09:45Well, from here, there's not a lot left there, is there?
09:48I can see a hole that I can fit both fists in.
09:52That is a massive hole.
09:54Towards the front of the car, it's not getting much better.
10:00Exhaust heat shields.
10:02They're normally one that goes all the way across here.
10:08Which, yeah, half of it's gone.
10:11Just get your pry bar on that.
10:15That is no longer attached.
10:18Well, that's your drop link, which attaches your anti-roll bar to your bottom arm.
10:24Do we need that?
10:25Yes, you do need that.
10:26For what?
10:28For stabilising the car through the bends.
10:31It should be attached, and it's just broke.
10:36Oh, yeah.
10:38Yeah.
10:38And, unfortunately, the sills aren't looking too good, either.
10:43That sill cover, the sporty bit, is covering up the metal bit.
10:48Yeah, I think we take these plastic covers off.
10:52There'll be quite a few rotten patches all the way along there.
10:55But they do normally seem to go around jacking point areas.
10:59So, this bit and then the front bit, you may find it middle.
11:02It's not too bad.
11:04But until we get them off,
11:06it's just where hot water comes down,
11:08it just sits in this area.
11:11When we stood out there this morning,
11:13Kevin said that years of running your car on British roads,
11:17if you've got a UK one,
11:19you're going to end up with corrosion and a bit of rot.
11:21Yeah.
11:22What have we got here?
11:24Corrosion and a lot of rot.
11:26Oh, brilliant.
11:27So, we're doing all right now.
11:28Yeah, we've ticked them boxes, definitely.
11:31Right.
11:50Somewhere near the North Pole,
11:51work on our 1999 Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 has begun.
11:57We're back, doing our thing.
11:59Oh, it's lovely, yeah.
12:0020 layers on, so I have put weight on,
12:02but it's only layers.
12:03You wish.
12:05It's being prepared for the rolling road test.
12:09Basically, we want to make sure that the engine
12:11has the least chance of laying go on the dyno
12:14because it's a completely unknown motor to us.
12:17So, we've had to do cam belt,
12:20we're going to be doing the oil change,
12:21swapping out the fuel,
12:23obviously fresh coolant, radiator,
12:25anything that's openly obvious
12:26that needs to do in straight away from being stud,
12:28and then over to the dyno she goes.
12:31A dyno, or dynamometer test,
12:35will be carried out by placing our Subaru
12:37on a set of rolling drums,
12:38simulating real-world conditions.
12:40It measures power and torque,
12:42and we'll be monitoring the air-fuel ratio at the back,
12:46and we'll be monitoring boost as well.
12:49That's kind of what the dyno does,
12:51and additional on top will be plugged in with a laptop
12:54for the engine management side of things,
12:57so it is quite a good health check.
13:00All-wheel drive, turbo.
13:04I'd like to see 210 to 220 brake horsepower.
13:09We're similar-ish kind of torque figures,
13:12with obviously a healthy boost in an air-fuel ratio,
13:16so fingers crossed.
13:25There we go, OK.
13:26Ready when you are.
13:40Looks like what we want.
13:44Happy days.
13:46210 horsepower, 216 foot-pounds.
13:50It's performed like, well, like it should
13:53out of the factory, really.
13:55Probably shy of 2 horsepower,
13:57which I think we'll let it get away
13:59with 2 horsepower in a day like today.
14:01So she booked figures, pretty much.
14:03That's happy days, isn't it?
14:04Happy days.
14:05That looks smooth enough, doesn't it?
14:06Yeah, nice smooth curve.
14:08You know, it's not had the basic things,
14:10like even spark plugs, you know,
14:11some other bits, and there's some fuel lines to do.
14:14So, yeah, we'll just work our way through
14:15the other basic parts of it,
14:17and then we'll pass it through to the body side
14:20and they can start getting rid of the rust,
14:23which there's plenty of.
14:31Feels like the Subaru's going to get a lot worse
14:33before it gets any better.
14:35So in an attempt to pre-empt the bills
14:37that might be coming our way,
14:38we found this.
14:40A 1974 Yamaha RD60.
14:44Not a spot of rust to be seen.
14:47Nice little bike, this.
14:48Lovely little bike, isn't it?
14:50Yeah, no, I think she's great.
14:5118-20 on there.
14:53She's fairly straight, you know,
14:54there's a few naturally,
14:55you know, little marks and bits and pieces,
14:56but more importantly,
14:58straight enough on the tank.
14:59It's not dinged or dented.
15:01A few little bits on the mudguard.
15:03I think that's just from the mounting bracket look,
15:05but mudguard's nice and straight.
15:06Tyres look okay.
15:08You know, it'll clean up quite nicely.
15:10Chain protector's good.
15:11No, it's a nice, smart, usable little bike.
15:14You know, it's not one what you'd put in your living room.
15:16It's not that condition,
15:17but it is extremely usable.
15:19Don't know if we've had it running though, have we?
15:21Not sure.
15:25That's not going to go in a wild, rakey boy.
15:27She smells a bit varnishing.
15:29Lack of fuel.
15:30She's dry.
15:31Yeah, she's been dry stored, hasn't she?
15:33So, yeah.
15:35Put some fresh fuel in it.
15:37Whip plug out, give that a clean.
15:39Whip, whip, whip, whip, whip, you'd be away, won't you?
15:41That is exactly what we wanted to hear.
15:44Oh, £1,000 we've got.
15:46Oh, £1,000.
15:47Oh, that looks very good.
15:49It does look very good.
15:50I think there's 11 coming.
15:52There we are.
15:52We've got 11.
15:53What do you want to bid up to, then?
15:55Just in the quid.
15:57We'd better stick your hand up, then.
15:59A cheap little bike, that.
16:00£1,200.
16:01£13.
16:02£1,300 with Helen.
16:04£1,300 bid.
16:05£1,400 then at 14.
16:07Thank you very much for your interest, anyway.
16:09£1,400.
16:12Yes.
16:14A great price, and we know just where to send it.
16:17The south bank of the Humber estuary.
16:21This is the perfect job for Rob Carter and Brian Gould,
16:24who haven't failed us yet.
16:27No, no.
16:28No.
16:29So it's not on any of them, then?
16:30Just as soon as they sort out the wiring on this MZ.
16:34So, like they said to Alan Turing,
16:35have you solved the problem yet?
16:37Yeah, we have.
16:38We will have.
16:39So no, then, is the answer?
16:41Yeah, no.
16:41At the moment, it's no,
16:43but later on, it will be yes.
16:45Excellent.
16:46Hopefully, when I Yamaha is revealed,
16:48it will cause no such problems.
16:50There is a surprise lurking in your shed, isn't there?
16:53Apparently so.
16:54We don't know what it is yet, do we?
16:56We have no idea what it might be.
16:58That's right.
16:59Do you want to say it again a bit more surprise?
17:02We have no idea what it might be.
17:04Oh, I like this.
17:05We're good at drama, actually.
17:07This is very good.
17:08Right.
17:08It says Yamaha on the key.
17:10Right, so it says Yamaha on the key,
17:11so you've no idea what the bike is,
17:13but it could be a Yamaha.
17:15Yeah, I think it's a Yamaha.
17:16Let's have a look at this top-secret project of the Yamaha,
17:19which is under here.
17:20One, two, three.
17:21We're off.
17:22Oh, what's this?
17:24Heavens, look.
17:26We're on it.
17:28That's your acting, is it, Brian?
17:30No, no, no, look at that.
17:31That's nice, that is.
17:32Yeah, that's an unusual one.
17:35It's not a 50, it's a 60.
17:37We don't think they brought them in.
17:39They didn't sell them in this country.
17:41No, they didn't.
17:41So the ones that are in the country...
17:43They're all imported.
17:44..have been imported.
17:45So this is an American-imported...
17:47Yes.
17:48Yeah.
17:48Yes.
17:49The RD-60 was a popular choice in North America and Europe,
17:52but UK licensing laws were different.
17:55You couldn't ride this at 16,
17:57cos at 16 it's got to be like a 49cc.
18:00You'd have to be 17 to ride this.
18:02And by that age, you're able to ride a more powerful bike,
18:06so Yamaha decided there was little market for them in the UK.
18:09Here's a nice feature, John.
18:11On the petrol cap here,
18:14do you know what that is meant to be?
18:16I'm going to hazard a guess, Brian,
18:17and I'm going to say I don't know.
18:19Ah, well, then you're fairly close.
18:21Right, OK, good.
18:22What is it?
18:23Well, like with a lot of the Japanese companies,
18:26they used to make other things before they did bikes.
18:28And what was that, right?
18:29They're tuning forks.
18:31And you can still buy a Yamaha piano from a music shop today.
18:36Yeah, you certainly can.
18:37They still make musical stuff to Yamaha.
18:39So, Brian, you had Yamaha bikes in the past.
18:42Mm.
18:43Do you play the piano?
18:45Well, now they know I'm a little bit...
18:48Digitally challenged.
18:49Digitally challenged in that respect.
18:51So I only have to pay, like, the short version.
18:54I can't have the whole tune.
18:56No.
18:56I'm just going to have a bit of it.
18:57Yeah, exactly.
18:58A two-minute waltz or whatever they called it.
19:00It was a three-minute waltz.
19:01Oh, I see.
19:02Right, yeah.
19:03You can only do two minutes.
19:04Yeah.
19:04Right, OK.
19:05We've got a bit missing.
19:11Ooh, look at that.
19:12It's clean.
19:12Look how clean that is.
19:14It's clean.
19:15So the idea here, then,
19:17is to replace all the fluids,
19:19because we don't know when it's been...
19:20Yeah, that's right.
19:20No, we don't know when it's run last.
19:22It does look clean oil,
19:24but, I mean, it could be 20-year-old clean oil.
19:27So what did the Japanese bikes bring to the party?
19:33Style, reliability, colour.
19:36You press the button and they set off.
19:39Let's hope our version follows suit.
19:42Right, we'll go for turn on.
19:46Nothing.
19:48With our track record, not a great surprise.
19:51There's something wrong back as flash of what turned off.
19:54I can hear it clicking.
19:55It does now.
19:57On went once and that's packed up.
20:00These are lights here, aren't they?
20:02On.
20:03We've got no lights, no dash lights, nothing.
20:06Are you ready to try it?
20:07Yeah.
20:07OK?
20:08Yeah.
20:08Yeah, go on.
20:09OK, Rob?
20:09Yeah.
20:12Yep, sparking.
20:13Look at that.
20:15Spark, look at that.
20:17On stopped.
20:18No lights, no dash lights,
20:21no winkers, no brake light,
20:23but we have got a spark.
20:53How bad is it, one out of five?
20:54Meanwhile, Brian, head of the internet,
20:56is tracking down a new battery.
20:58The one that's closest to the number of the battery in it
21:01is temporarily out of stock.
21:04So I'm now going to have to find another option.
21:07What, are you doing one that is in stock?
21:10Clearly, I can't order one if they haven't got it.
21:13This is not going to plan.
21:15Look at this, look.
21:17Somebody's put, strapped that into there,
21:19into there with spades, look.
21:22Oh.
21:24What I think we're heading towards here now
21:26is you're going to unravel a series of electrical issues,
21:31which is going to take some time for them to sort through.
21:33We'll cure one by one, won't we?
21:35Because most of the obvious features,
21:37like indicators, headlight, brake lights,
21:40are simply not working off their controls.
21:42We were hoping, being Japanese,
21:45which is intrinsically reliable,
21:48it would light up, but obviously it hasn't.
21:51We were looking for a light recommission.
21:54Fingers crossed Rob and Brian's years of experience
21:57can bring us through.
22:14On the shores of the Humber,
22:15Rob and Brian have been busy tracking down
22:17what they need for our 1974 Yamaha RD60.
22:22The filaments have gone in that bulb.
22:24Yeah, filaments have gone.
22:25The trouble is you would normally consider replacing the bulb.
22:27You can't take the bulb out.
22:29So you can't just replace the bulb,
22:31you've got to replace the entire bulb.
22:32You've got to replace the headlight.
22:35Not easy to find for a 50-year-old grey import.
22:39But it's not what you know, it's who you know.
22:41And one of Brian's good friends has come up trumps.
22:45I was chatting to him and he says,
22:46I think I might have something for you.
22:48And he's got one.
22:49Just a touch different to the original,
22:52but so close as to be good enough.
22:55Whoever gets it, if the bulb pops,
22:57they can just change the bulb.
22:58That'll be a lot better.
23:00And we've now got the battery,
23:02we've got some oil, so we'll crack on.
23:05Yeah.
23:05Engine oil.
23:08Rob, basically you've just put in a bit of
23:10what looks like cough mixture.
23:11Yeah, it's two-stroke oil.
23:13And that does what and why?
23:17All it'll do, it'll be laid on top of the piston now.
23:20I'll just crank it other loads of times by hand.
23:23Purely lubrication.
23:24Purely lubrication.
23:25Because we don't know when it was run last.
23:27Could have been run years ago,
23:28it could have been run a couple of years ago,
23:29we don't know.
23:30That's it.
23:31That'll secure the engine side of it.
23:33Then we're going to apply the fuel to it, of course.
23:36We've got the new battery on.
23:38So at that stage, ignition on,
23:41we can try to fire it.
23:43Yeah.
23:43Key's in, on.
23:46On's working,
23:47so we've got, obviously, we've got electric.
23:49That's light switch.
23:51It's working now.
23:52It wasn't working initially
23:54because the earth wire was actually snapped off.
23:57Plug's in, plug lead's on.
24:00We're just going to try it now,
24:01how that goes or it doesn't.
24:03And we've got the ignition on.
24:04Yeah, ignition's on.
24:05All right.
24:05We can just test for the ignition.
24:07Yeah, ignition's on.
24:12Wow.
24:13That was easy enough.
24:15That's better.
24:15Second kick.
24:18Here you go.
24:19How was that?
24:20Sounds all right, Rob.
24:21Pour in gear, Bri.
24:23What, are we one down on this?
24:24I think so.
24:27Yeah.
24:28Next gear.
24:33Next.
24:33You see, it's, it's, it's buckled.
24:37There's a kink in that.
24:39It's not bouncing that way,
24:40but it's going side to side like that, look.
24:43The only thing around there,
24:44you can see it there, look.
24:46So we'll have, we'll have to sort that out.
24:49But before we do,
24:51Brian has some important health and safety advice.
24:53What you shouldn't do
24:55is to lubricate your chain
24:57with a cloth with oil on
24:59when the wheel is turning round.
25:01The, the cloth can catch in the chain
25:03and take your fingers with it.
25:05You are talking from experience here, Brian.
25:08So, well, you know,
25:10I was young and silly once.
25:12I'm just, er,
25:13just not young now.
25:21On the outskirts of Chesterfield,
25:23our other Japanese performance machine
25:25is in the middle of a serious operation.
25:30Joe is cutting open our Subaru's rear quarter
25:33in search of the hole in the wheel arch.
25:35And that is your window.
25:39Well, yeah, that's all because
25:40when they made from factory,
25:42it didn't get any sealer on it.
25:45Something Kevin has seen all before.
25:48Yeah, that's what I expected.
25:49That's what I felt.
25:51Actually, it's not as bad as I thought.
25:52I thought it would be actually a lot longer,
25:55but it's not.
25:56But it's also structural.
25:59Once this has started going
26:01and it gets along here,
26:02we've got no structural integrity.
26:03And it's all right putting a patch over it
26:05so it looks pretty.
26:06And MOT people don't know to feel up here.
26:11But there's no strength in the car,
26:12so it's dangerous.
26:13So to do it properly,
26:14this is the only way.
26:16But before we crack on with that,
26:18Joe and Mark have found evidence
26:20of our Subaru's past life.
26:21Relic.
26:22Which hints at the family saloon
26:24rather than the racing one.
26:26A couple of receipts here.
26:28What's this one for?
26:29This one's for...
26:30Day 07.
26:31...$2007, this one.
26:33Nice.
26:35We've got some Bisto gravy,
26:3667p, beans.
26:38Man's got it sorted, though.
26:40Bacon, brown sauce.
26:42Sorted.
26:43A rare insight into the life of a Subaru driver.
26:49Joe continues working on both back quarters.
26:55Replacing parts and panels for early impressors
26:57is not easy.
26:59These are very rare to find.
27:00You can't actually get these even from Japan anymore.
27:02That's why they all have to be fabricated and made.
27:07Don't know why they don't make them anymore.
27:09Because obviously they're still rotting
27:11and having accidents.
27:12But Japan no longer supply them.
27:14Which means we will have to have panels and parts
27:17custom made if we can't take them off a donor car.
27:20As you can see, we've borrowed some parts off it already.
27:24We've stolen the wings.
27:26Bonnet.
27:26This is the bonnet off that car.
27:28As you can see, there's a big crease in it.
27:30So we've flipped the bonnet.
27:32And this one, you've not had the front end off this car,
27:37but this car's also saving another car that we've got on site.
27:41Well, yeah, this car, it'll save many cars.
27:44Just one car.
27:45And there are plenty of parts we can recycle,
27:48thanks to boy racers pretending to be rally legends.
27:51Young drivers, thinking the Colin McRae,
27:54down country lanes, lack of talent.
27:57A good reminder of how special our Subaru is.
28:00I think I've seen two totally original ones
28:04since I've worked here the last 10 years.
28:06Usually they have wheels changed, big exhaust,
28:08bit of a remap.
28:10Yeah, they don't usually come in as a standard.
28:12They're just the one that you've found.
28:15Back in the workshop,
28:17Joe is preparing our new bonnet for painting.
28:19So we're going to take all these air vents off both sides,
28:22get the scoop on the tray off, scoop off, rubber trims.
28:27On standard impresses, rain covers are fitted to the air vents,
28:31with the scoop left open.
28:32On more powerful engines, all are left open.
28:37The scoop efficiently channels in cool air,
28:40while the vents allow heat to escape.
28:43This system of forced airflow
28:45helps to maintain optimal engine temperature,
28:48contributing to improved performance and longevity.
28:50And, of course, gives the car its rally styling.
28:55When prepped and ready,
28:57panels and parts have been re-sprayed,
28:59and it feels like we're making progress.
29:02She's now got some paint on her,
29:04without the rust.
29:06New wings, well, new to this.
29:10Down sides.
29:12You probably can't tell,
29:13but fresh new sill.
29:15Literally a whole lot, all the way down.
29:18And then the big bits were rear quarters.
29:22Obviously, inner and outer.
29:24So it's, yeah, a lot of work.
29:28We're probably going to get a couple hundred hours in when we're done.
29:32It's an expensive, time-consuming job.
29:34And probably a good idea to leave it there.
29:43Over near Hull,
29:44master hand Col Thompson
29:46has set up shop in Brian's Lean To.
29:48And he's about to work his magic
29:50on our Yamaha's front wheel.
29:52It's got a bend in the rim, basically.
29:55I'm going to attempt to get that out of there.
29:58How easy is that?
29:59You either do it or you don't.
30:01All depends on the wheel rim
30:02and how badly it's been bent.
30:04Could be a brick in the road,
30:06a pothole,
30:06riding up and down curbs.
30:08Absolutely anything can cause a bent wheel.
30:13See, it's touching there.
30:15Just touching.
30:18Just nicely,
30:18it's come drop down from there.
30:21So what we need to do
30:22is where it's low,
30:24we need to slacken them off.
30:31That one was quite tight.
30:33Just slacken that off.
30:35And then you tighten that up.
30:40So how long have you been doing this, Col?
30:4545 or 50 years,
30:46something like that.
30:48So you've got your hand in a little bit with it.
30:51Oh, yeah.
30:51I've done a few.
30:52One or three.
30:54There, look,
30:54it's touching all the way around now, look.
30:56That's what we want.
30:57Yeah.
30:57And hopefully,
30:59hopefully,
30:59if we spin it quick,
31:01you know,
31:01that little bit of up and down,
31:03the tyre will take that out.
31:05There you have it.
31:06One wheel trued up.
31:08Easy when you know how.
31:10Over in the painting department,
31:12Rob has been working on the Yammy's frame.
31:15It was a bit sort of pitting, rusty.
31:17So what we've done,
31:18I flattered it down,
31:20a lot of it to bare metal
31:21and other bits nearly to bare metal.
31:24There's about four coats of primer on here now.
31:27So we get like the nearest,
31:29nearest to a factory finish
31:30that we possibly can with cans.
31:33Oh, yeah.
31:34I've got the difficult job.
31:35But it's a skilled job
31:37because people don't,
31:38you don't just rattle it away.
31:40There's a skill to this.
31:42And what you've got to think of is
31:43you're stirring your porridge.
31:46You're actually stirring it,
31:48you know, circular,
31:49rather than backwards and forwards constantly.
31:53And that mixes it up nicely,
31:55ready for Rob to apply.
31:58Teamwork makes the dream work.
32:03Since we've started doing this,
32:05we've been looking out for them.
32:07This is only the second one in the UK
32:09on the road that we've seen.
32:11So it's rare?
32:12It's really quite rare, yeah.
32:14So can we make a bit of money on it?
32:17I would realistically think you could.
32:20Don't you, Rob?
32:21I mean, we've gone sensible with what we've done on it.
32:24Yeah, in today's market, it's hard.
32:27But I wouldn't, like, rate it off as a massive loss.
32:30I would think there's a fair chance.
32:31Yeah, yeah, I would.
32:32And you'll have the Rob factor.
32:35It'll be old, interesting and good looking.
32:37LAUGHTER
32:38MUSIC PLAYS
33:04On the edge of the Peak District,
33:05it looks like our 90s Impreza is through the worst of it, rotten rust-free.
33:12The doors have gone on, the bonnet's gone on, we've done full undercoating, it's had new
33:19parts where needed, it's had stuff painted, it's had bushes, new discs and pads all round.
33:24Looking smart, fresh, definitely a lot different to when you first roll up the car isn't it?
33:29It's certainly coming along, and today Dave and Lewis are bleeding our new brakes.
33:33Hold that door Lewis just in case, look at that look, slim Jim.
33:40As I fold myself inside.
33:42No problem.
33:43There we are then.
33:44It's adjusted.
33:46But you've got a hard job in there Dave, have you?
33:48Oh, this is sharpened.
33:51I've just noticed the two holes, it's easy to pour.
33:54Yeah, one hole to let the air bubble out of and the other for it to pour out of.
33:58If you just put a great big hole in it, it comes out really fast.
34:01If you put one hole in it, it doesn't come out at all.
34:03So, Lewis's top tip of the day.
34:08Give us a ten please Dave on this one.
34:11Let's see how far we get.
34:14Bleeding the brakes helps get rid of air bubbles from the pipes.
34:17Ah, there we go.
34:18Just give me two more.
34:20Replacing the fluid so the brake pedal is firm and responsive.
34:25I'm just pumping the pedal nice and steady, up and down, full strokes.
34:29And then on the last one, I'll hold it down and then he locks the nipple off on the caliper
34:34and then I relax.
34:36After we've done that, I'll try the pedal.
34:37And if it's firm, happy days, we'll do a leak check.
34:40No leaks, then everyone's a winner.
34:42Does it feel alright?
34:44Yeah, it does actually, yeah.
34:45Good?
34:45Yeah.
34:46Nice and hard, you don't feel spongy or anything.
34:48No.
34:49The other three are checked and we're all done.
34:52But now what?
34:54A cup of tea.
34:56It's thirsty work at the sharp end, but there's lots more to do.
34:59Our impression needs putting back together and that's what's happening now.
35:04First up, the front bumper.
35:07Scoop time.
35:11Yeah, now it's starting to look like a car.
35:13Yeah, I'm happy with that.
35:24Our 70s Yamaha is nearly there.
35:28Today, Brian and Rob are adding the finishing touches.
35:31The first of which is a brand new number plate.
35:34Rob isn't taking any chances.
35:36Is that drill quite big for the task?
35:38Yeah, it is, yeah.
35:39It's not ideal, is it?
35:41This is better for like drilling holes for gate posts and things, isn't it really?
35:45But it will be, it will be alright.
35:47It will be gentle.
35:51Here you go mate, we're off.
35:55That's absolutely in the middle, is that Brian?
35:58Can we have a look?
35:59The right side wants to drop down a touch.
36:02Does it?
36:03Stand back here and have a look.
36:06I will go off your guidance mate.
36:09Is that better?
36:12That's as far down as it'll go that is.
36:15Yes, that is better.
36:16Not alright at that, yeah.
36:17Yeah.
36:17It was central but it was a bit that way so we are talking about like thickness of a piece
36:23of newspaper that way but like super duper eagle eyes here spotted it so we've had to
36:28just like give it a twizzle but yeah, no it's fine.
36:31Not meaning to rub things in but it actually needs to go to the left as well.
36:37Eh?
36:38It just slide slightly that way that's all.
36:43It's just overhanging to the right a little.
36:47Right.
36:50What's to go to the right?
36:51To the left.
36:52To the left.
36:55That is absolutely dead on behind them brackets mate.
36:59Are we alright now?
37:00That's better.
37:01Right.
37:03It's got to be right mate.
37:06This might be a long day.
37:08That's it.
37:09It slides over that.
37:10Yeah.
37:11Are we okay now?
37:11The bum there, yeah.
37:13That's it.
37:15Gently over there Bryce, see if the catch line's up.
37:18It looks well that, don't it?
37:20Don't forget the big key fob reveal.
37:23Ah, key fob reveal, yeah that's vital.
37:25Can't forget Bryce key fob.
37:27I've been waiting for three months for this.
37:30The Yamaha key fob.
37:31Look, with the tuning forks on, colour matched.
37:34What more could you want?
37:36Spot on, yeah.
37:38That's it.
37:39We've finished it.
37:40That's it.
37:41All done.
37:43Number seven.
37:44Cheers mate.
37:45Love it.
37:48A few weeks later, our Yamaha has been delivered for auction.
37:51In the end, not a great deal to do.
37:54But how much did it all cost?
37:56The original purchase price, including tax and commission, was a lightweight £1,568.
38:04Parts and materials came in at £292.
38:08And labour cost another £900.
38:12Bringing our total spend to a highly economical £2,760.
38:19It looks to me as though they've done a sympathetic recommission, which is absolutely right.
38:26There's two ways in there.
38:27You either strip them down and do a full house and spend a load of money, let's be honest, and
38:33lose a load of money, let's be fair.
38:35Or, in this scenario, because it wasn't a particularly bad bike to start with, you do a sympathetic recommission.
38:42We used to say you need £3,000 for a nice bike, for a decent bike.
38:46Now you need £2,000 for a nice bike, you know.
38:49I see that bike there, as lovely as it is, somewhere around a sort of £2,000, £2,500, somewhere
38:56there, personally, somewhere there.
38:58Not a lot of money really, is it?
39:00And we'll move on to £249, which is a 1974 Yamaha.
39:07Here we are then, where are we going to be then? £2,000.
39:10That's where we're going to be, at £2,200. At £2,400.
39:15Come on, you can get to £3,000.
39:17At £2,500, we're not on sale yet, no?
39:19Another £100 and we're on sale.
39:21At £2,500, on sale.
39:24Yes, it worked, John. I think we know what we're doing.
39:27Oh, look at that.
39:293-2, 3,002, and 3, 3-3, 3-4, 3,004.
39:37Oh, look at it go.
39:40And 50, 3-5-50, third and last time.
39:46Yes.
39:46Oh, well done.
39:47Well done, John.
39:49Brilliant.
39:50Have you worked out how much?
39:51Almost a grand.
39:52If you knock off your commission, it's around about a grand.
39:56There you are, you see, it can be done, can't it?
39:59Hey, look, £1,000 gross profit, less that tiny bit of commission,
40:03but obviously that's nothing much at all, not even worth talking about,
40:05a little bit of VAT.
40:06And a profit has been made, so we've turned a corner.
40:10A corner we don't often turn, but it's nice when we do.
40:14The Yamaha headed off to its new home in Herefordshire.
40:18Next up, our Subaru Impreza, another rarely seen classic back on the road.
40:23But let's see how much it cost us.
40:25The original purchase price, including tax and commission, was an impressive £3,706.
40:33Parts and materials cost £8,787.
40:38And labour racked up £14,040.
40:42Turbo charging our total spend to £26,533.
40:49Let's hope Yorkshire's answer to Colin McRae thinks it's all worth it.
40:56Oh, Dave, you're 18 again.
41:00We're off, we're off, we're off.
41:01Yeah, I did notice.
41:03All I can say is don't break it.
41:06No, don't break it and we'll stop at 60-ish.
41:09Ish.
41:10Yeah.
41:14To be fair, considering she's on a few miles, isn't she?
41:16Which is 930?
41:17Yeah.
41:18To be fair, it don't actually run so bad.
41:19It pulls well enough.
41:22How much for a bit of nostalgic fun do you reckon?
41:27Oh, do you?
41:27I think somewhere between 8 and 10.
41:32Do you?
41:35Now, then.
41:37Now, that's always a good start when he says now, then.
41:40238 is the Subaru Impreza.
41:43The bangers and cash Subaru Impreza, no less.
41:46We have got £12,750.
41:48£12,750.
41:49Oh, my goodness.
41:50Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
41:51Then we've got £13,000 on here.
41:53Ooh, this is pretty good.
41:55£13,250.
41:56Oh, my goodness.
41:57£13,500.
41:58£13,750.
42:00£14,000 there.
42:02You know, straight away, you can tell it's a nice car.
42:04When you're 100 yards away, just the way it sits and how bright it was, you thought, that looks nice.
42:09And the closer you got for once, it actually got better, not worse.
42:13To all, at £15,250.
42:17£15,250.
42:19Sold to Brian there.
42:20Very good.
42:22Bought by Brian and his son, Jack, who run a used car garage on the Wirral.
42:27It just drives like me.
42:30To add to their ever-growing collection.
42:33None of them are for sale.
42:34All these ones here, they're all part of the personal collection.
42:38I mean, we've obviously got the Daimlet that you know about.
42:41Another restoring classics classic.
42:44They're within view of sort of like being investments, you know, for the future.
42:50Hopefully.
42:50Fingers crossed.
42:51But we'll have to see.
42:53And it's safe to say they're more than happy with their latest edition.
42:57You've only got to look at it and you just see the level of work that's been done on it.
43:01It's just absolutely fantastic.
43:03I mean, what I will say is it's completely standard.
43:06So it's kind of what you want if you're going to go for like something collectible.
43:10Whereas mine, unfortunately, has an acquired taste.
43:14I mean, it's T-Reg, so I think it's 1999.
43:17So it's like a 26-year-old brand new car, basically.
43:20I'd be very surprised if they'd made any profit whatsoever.
43:26No.
43:33No.
43:33No.
43:36No.
