A warning, some viewers may find vision in this next story distressing. Farmers across Western Australia are battling what they say is the worst mouse plague the state has ever seen. In Morawa, locals are pushing to have access to stronger mouse baits, with the animals destroying crops and infesting the shire.

00:10I've never seen mice like this before in my life here, it's just everywhere.
00:15In a first, the Morrowishire is handing out baits to residents.
00:20At the end of the day at some stage I believe there will be a virus that will be spread
00:25through the hundreds of rotting mice carcasses that are around the place.
00:33The damage is widespread.
00:35One grocery store forced to ditch $20,000 worth of food.

00:41Pretty much daily we're having to throw out stock because they're getting into it
00:45and eating it and constantly having to clean up after them and cleaning up their bodies.
00:51Despite efforts to deal with the plague, mice are nesting in stock, the smell overpowering.
00:57Dead mice are everywhere here on the main street.
01:01They're in the buildings including the schools and the health service.
01:05There the state government says it's increased cleaning and mouse control.
01:10But locals are still worried.
01:12The Shire has contacted the state's chief health officer and multiple ministers asking for help.
01:18There's also calls for farmers to be given access to stronger baits.
01:22I mean they're sitting out there worrying whether their crop's going to grow
01:25because the mouse might have eaten it first.
01:27If we can get the mice to die in the paddocks, we'll have less mice in our town site.
01:32The community is also hoping cooler weather will help stem the flow.
