00:00:01Hello, everybody. I'm Larry Ridley, and this is the NFL on EA Sports.
00:00:07We've got a good one on tap today, and there's going to be two quarterbacks ready to get it done
00:00:12on the gridiron.
00:00:13It's Kaepernick's 49ers going up against Brady's Patriots.
00:00:19For the call, let's send you out to the broadcast booth, where we'll join our commentators, Brandon Godden and Charles
00:00:26Davis.
00:00:27All right, Larry, thanks. CA Sports coverage of the NFL brings us to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
00:00:34Coming up, we've got a good matchup on tap between the San Francisco 49ers and the New England Patriots.
00:00:44Hi again, everybody, alongside Charles Davis. I'm Brandon Godden, and you know, Charles, as Larry pointed out in the open,
00:00:50got a couple of great quarterbacks set to square off here this afternoon.
00:00:53That ball's probably going to be flying all over the place, isn't it?
00:00:56Oh, without a doubt, and the game has never been more quarterback-centric than it is now,
00:01:01and both of these teams have top flight signal callers.
00:01:15Set to go now on a wet and rainy afternoon, and we are underway in Foxborough.
00:01:28So here's the first drive now for the 49ers.
00:01:31They'll be let out by their quarterback who played for the Nevada Wolfpack in college.
00:01:35It's Colin Kaepernick.
00:01:37And when he's at his best, Colin Kaepernick epitomizes what most people are looking for in a quarterback nowadays.
00:01:42Not just a guy who can throw it, but a guy who can be a big part of the run
00:01:46game
00:01:47and really break down defenses.
00:02:05Kaepernick now on first down.
00:02:09Oh, he's going to take a shot right away.
00:02:13Almost able to intercept it.
00:02:16That's one he would have liked to have held on to on his first drive.
00:02:19Instead, second down.
00:02:21And here's the head shots for the offense, and Carlos Hyde, a talented back.
00:02:26Has taken over as the lead runner.
00:02:29A terrific talent.
00:02:30Can batter you inside, but has more speed than what you expect to take at the distance.
00:02:49First carry for Carlos Hyde.
00:02:51Just a couple there on the second down run.
00:02:53Now they're staring at a third and eighth situation.
00:02:58A quick look here at the Patriot defense.
00:03:01Rob Ninkovic is one of those great gems.
00:03:03They got polished up over time.
00:03:05Whether he's rushing as a defensive end or playing outside linebacker,
00:03:08he's awfully productive.
00:03:21An early tough test on the opening drive.
00:03:25This is third and eighth.
00:03:33On third and long, it's Kaepernick.
00:03:36He's got time in the pocket.
00:03:38This time for Smith, and it's intercepted.
00:03:40Picked off by Logan Ryan.
00:03:45Certainly not how they envisioned ending their opening drive here in the first quarter.
00:03:49Too many ones in this play.
00:03:51First quarter, first drive, first interception throw.
00:03:55And that last one, that hurts.
00:03:57That hurts.
00:04:18Really nice starting field position here for the offensive unit.
00:04:30Now a first carry for LeGarrette Blount.
00:04:33And he'll be stopped up quickly here at the 38.
00:04:37Just a yard on the first down carry, so it's second and nine.
00:04:40A one-yard gain can look like a disaster, but it all depends on how the game is going.
00:04:45Is it a series of one-yard gains running the ball?
00:04:48If that's the case, you might have to start thinking about throwing it a little bit more.
00:04:51But if it's just the occasional one-yard run, hey, congratulations to the defense.
00:04:55They won that one.
00:04:56Come back and get them the next time.
00:04:59They'll run again with Blount.
00:05:01And the play goes nowhere.
00:05:02Losing yardage back near the 40 at the 39.
00:05:06They'll lose a yard, and it brings up third.
00:05:09But when it comes to the running game, the New England Patriots,
00:05:12they're one of the few teams in the NFL that I don't think care much about balancing things out.
00:05:17Last year, to your point, fifth in passing yardage, number 30 in the run game.
00:05:21What they want to do each and every week is make a game plan based on their opponent,
00:05:25not so much their own personnel, and they try to attack that way.
00:05:31So here we go now.
00:05:32An extra defensive back in there on third and 10.
00:05:38Throwing is Brady on third down.
00:05:39Now, sideline throw, it's complete.
00:05:43And a nice job there of keeping the toes inbounds.
00:05:47I do have to admit, I like it when it all comes together.
00:05:50When the top part, catching the football, right,
00:05:54whether you're catching it with your hands or cradling it,
00:05:56comes together with the legs.
00:05:58In this case, the feet.
00:05:59Do a little toe tap to stay inbounds and complete the catch.
00:06:03And a great job by our crew on the camera shot.
00:06:06Love when you see the grass or on the field turf,
00:06:08those rubber pellets flying up.
00:06:10Great catch.
00:06:13And this is off the left upright.
00:06:16And it comes back.
00:06:17It's no good.
00:06:19And this will remain a scoreless game.
00:06:22So distance not the issue there.
00:06:23He had plenty of leg to get it there.
00:06:25It's that darn upright getting in the way.
00:06:27Always gets in the way of a good time, doesn't it?
00:06:29Because he hit it square, too.
00:06:31Sometimes you can bank one in if you get it on the end of the football.
00:06:34No such luck there for him.
00:06:35And San Francisco gets set to go here.
00:06:39And following the interception, just any interception,
00:06:42are you a little bit more cautious when you start that next drive?
00:06:45Or no, you just throw that out the window?
00:06:47I think you are.
00:06:48I don't think that there's any way you can run back out there and go,
00:06:51ah, totally didn't affect me.
00:06:52Let's just go ahead and be loose with the football again.
00:06:54You're going to take care of it,
00:06:56but you have to be careful about being too cautious
00:06:58because now you can't run any offense at all.
00:07:01Still want to attack.
00:07:01We'll see how they attack him here.
00:07:09They go back to the air here after the INT on the last drive.
00:07:14And he just gets rid of it and throws it away.
00:07:17A wise move there.
00:07:18Looked like nobody opened.
00:07:20Now second down.
00:07:21It's a tried-and-true formula,
00:07:23and I don't think it'll change for as long as we play football.
00:07:26If someone's trying to throw the ball
00:07:27and you can put pressure on them and make it tough,
00:07:30that's only going to help your defense.
00:07:31Yeah, he's since being hurried.
00:07:33He got rid of it before taking the hit, but incomplete.
00:07:42Kaepernick again here on second and ten.
00:07:44To the sideline, and oh, a nice catch there.
00:07:48Made sure the feet were inbounds, and they were.
00:07:51Was that a receiver?
00:07:53Yeah, actually it was.
00:07:54It was a running back who was a receiver on the play.
00:07:58Ike's been spending time in the receiver drills getting his feet down.
00:08:01Well, those guys out of the backfield, they've got to be good,
00:08:03agile with their feet.
00:08:04He showed the agility there with a toe tap.
00:08:06No doubt about it as Ike went to ballet school.
00:08:09Got the toes down and stayed inbounds.
00:08:14They fake the give.
00:08:15Now Kaepernick.
00:08:17And he'll just toss it away.
00:08:20So he throws it away, and that brings up fourth down.
00:08:23Partner, how many times have you heard it?
00:08:25Pressure creates diamonds, right?
00:08:27But it also bursts pipes.
00:08:29And on that one, that's what they got.
00:08:31They got after him, and he was fortunate just to get rid of it.
00:08:33Yeah, he just had to chuck it away.
00:08:35So on now is the Clemson man, Bradley Pinion, to punt this one away.
00:08:39Back deep, Danny Amendola for New England.
00:08:51And that hits at the six and carries into the end zone for a touchback.
00:08:57And now we get our first look at a guy who's been around the block a time or two.
00:09:01He will not be rattled today.
00:09:03And that changes things for a defensive coordinator,
00:09:05because normally when you get the young guys, you get the rookies,
00:09:08you throw all the exotic blitzes at them and looks they haven't seen,
00:09:11but this guy, he's seen it all.
00:09:26Watch left, watch left, watch left.
00:09:27Stop it, stop it.
00:09:35On first and ten, here's Brady.
00:09:39And he's got Edelman for the first time.
00:09:41And that's complete.
00:09:42And he'll get this up to the 34-yard line.
00:09:47The former seventh-round pick, Julian Edelman,
00:09:50just continues to have such a productive career.
00:09:52And has made himself into a receiver.
00:09:54Remember, he was a college quarterback,
00:09:56and not just a productive one, a very good one.
00:09:59At Kent State, right?
00:10:00Yes, a great leader, a guy who could make plays with his feet and his arm,
00:10:04got to the NFL and had to convert him to being a receiver and was drafted that way.
00:10:08And that conversion, oh boy, it's been good.
00:10:12Now a play fake here on first down.
00:10:22And Edelman finally works his way open.
00:10:24It's complete.
00:10:25And he'll be taken down, but not before getting this inside the 30.
00:10:31And finding Edelman underneath, that's a recipe for success.
00:10:35Typical route for a good slot receiver.
00:10:38And Edelman's one of the best in the game.
00:10:40Knows how to go inside with one of my college coaches used to call the Briar Patch.
00:10:44Got to go in there where it's tough and make those tough catches.
00:10:47And not only can he do it, he can often run away from people after the catch.
00:11:13Brady gives now to Blunt.
00:11:15And he'll get this one down to about the 27.
00:11:18Credited him with a one-yard gain there to make it second and nine.
00:11:22And on this offense, a guy that kind of came in under the radar, Lewis.
00:11:26Hard to believe that Deion Lewis was that far under the radar.
00:11:30There is something, too, precedent from schools.
00:11:34Played at Pitt, and they do know how to churn out running backs.
00:11:41See if they stay on the ground for second down.
00:11:52Ready to throw on second down.
00:11:55And right side caught Hogan.
00:11:57And taking it to the 15-yard line before he's brought down.
00:12:03That next teammate used to tell me all the time, I hate experienced quarterbacks.
00:12:07Because no matter what, you really can't hide what you're doing.
00:12:11And I think that right there, he knew right away where the blitz was coming from, where his primary guy
00:12:15was going to be.
00:12:16And he ended up going to a secondary target for a nice game.
00:12:19I was just going to ask you, that wasn't the primary target.
00:12:21He's so good at that, isn't he?
00:12:23I think he knew right away that he wasn't going to get to his primary guy.
00:12:26I think he read that as soon as he got to the line of scrimmage.
00:12:29Knew where the pressure was going to come from.
00:12:31And said, ah, I know how to beat that.
00:12:33And that's what he did.
00:12:34A good pick up there.
00:12:35Eight yards on the first down completion.
00:12:37He decided to run a hitch route.
00:12:39It really helped to have a guy who could turn it loose.
00:12:41And boy, he rifled one in there on that one.
00:12:43Not much run after catch.
00:12:45But it worked really well.
00:12:58Now a carry for the shifty Deion Lewis.
00:13:02It'll be a gain of two on the play, but they'll remain a few inches short here with third down
00:13:07looming.
00:13:08And a look now at the defensive starters for San Francisco.
00:13:12Eric Armstead was a big-time high school basketball player turned into college football All-American.
00:13:18Now they're counting on him in the NFL to fulfill his promise.
00:13:36An extra DB for the 49ers now on third.
00:13:41Brady going to try and throw on third down.
00:13:43And that is incomplete.
00:13:46Julian Edelman, the intended receiver.
00:13:48And now it's fourth down.
00:13:50Now they've got to be a little frustrated here to not complete that on third down after having such a
00:13:54long drive going.
00:13:55You're talking about going over 70 yards on the drive.
00:13:58Yeah, did you say a little frustrated?
00:14:00Very frustrated.
00:14:00Yeah, I'm with you on that.
00:14:01I'm very frustrated.
00:14:02There's no doubt about it.
00:14:04They thought they were going to have a chance to cash in in the end zone.
00:14:07Now it looks like it's likely a field goal attempt.
00:14:11And Gostkowski's kick is good.
00:14:13And the Patriots jump out to a 3-0 lead.
00:14:17Well, he got an early chance to redeem himself, and he's able to put that one through.
00:14:21And he'll be happy he got a second chance so quickly after missing the first one.
00:14:25Now he's got the confidence back up before we even finish the first quarter.
00:14:50Gostkowski now converted for three.
00:14:52Now he'll kick this one away.
00:14:56That will be taken in the end zone.
00:14:58And he won't return this one.
00:15:00He'll go down to a knee, and they'll start at the 25.
00:15:04And San Francisco gets set to go here.
00:15:07And three and out on the last drive.
00:15:10No points on the scoreboard.
00:15:11A little soul-searching now?
00:15:13I would say so.
00:15:14And they need to help out their defense a little bit.
00:15:16They've had to be on the field a lot more than normal, put them in some tough spots.
00:15:20But what's the old adage?
00:15:21When you get another chance, it gives you a better chance to do it right.
00:15:40Throwing on first down is Kaepernick.
00:15:44And they will not get the connection there.
00:15:46It's incomplete.
00:15:58And that right there will set him back a bit on the offensive holding penalty.
00:16:02And you know what you want to pressure after a penalty like that?
00:16:05The guy who just committed the foul.
00:16:06You want to see if he's going to keep his head down, or if he's going to get his head
00:16:09right back into the game.
00:16:11I'd send a blitz at him right away and see if he holds up.
00:16:14All right.
00:16:15Single receiver, single receiver.
00:16:17Hey, Jordan Island over here.
00:16:18Single receiver.
00:16:21Tied to Lone Man in the backfield.
00:16:25Here's Kaepernick to throw.
00:16:27Complete to Quentin Patton.
00:16:29Seven yards, the pickup on the pitch and catch.
00:16:32That was a nice run slant route.
00:16:34And what the receiver's trying to do is make the defender think he's going upfield for a deeper route.
00:16:39And then breaks it off, usually after about three to four steps.
00:16:42And cuts towards the middle of the field.
00:16:44And now what he's trying to do is use his body to keep the defender away from the football and
00:16:49give the quarterback a really nice target.
00:16:54On second down, Hyde.
00:16:57And he stopped immediately there.
00:16:59Just a yard there, so it brings up a tough third and 12.
00:17:02Well, partner, we know today's NFL is really built around the guy throwing the football.
00:17:08But these short runs, they still pay dividends because they can take their toll on a defense.
00:17:12And they can add up as the game goes along.
00:17:15You control the clock.
00:17:16You control the ball.
00:17:17And that way, you often control the game.
00:17:24On third and long, it's Kaepernick.
00:17:29And he's got some space here.
00:17:31Whoa, shifty.
00:17:33Whoa.
00:17:33And they're going to get this one all the way out across the 45.
00:17:37And they're able to convert on third with a solid gain of 23.
00:18:06And now a first down following that long game.
00:18:17They'll run it now out of the gun.
00:18:19And taking it across midfield and inside the 45.
00:18:24It's a gain of 11 yards that time, and it produces a new set of downs.
00:18:28How many times do we say in this game that speed kills?
00:18:31And it does it in so many different ways.
00:18:33In this case, you've got a back who's quick and shifty.
00:18:37Can make moves, make people miss, but also gets to and through a hole before it can close down.
00:18:43That's some of the benefits of that speed.
00:18:45Not just outrunning people in the secondary.
00:18:46And that led to a really nice game.
00:18:51They run again with Hyde on first.
00:18:53And he's going to get this inside the 30.
00:18:57And a nice carry there of 15 yards.
00:19:00That's another nice run.
00:19:01And I have to tell you, some of the coaches that I played for, their philosophies were always different when
00:19:06they see a guy running the ball well.
00:19:08Some of them wanted to immediately go to play action and throw it now because it's wide open.
00:19:12While other coaches said, you know something?
00:19:14Until they stop him, that big boy's going to keep getting the football.
00:19:17And that might be the direction that they're going to go right now.
00:19:30First down, a run with Hyde.
00:19:32And he is met at the line of scrimmage.
00:19:35And he goes down right there.
00:19:36No gain on the play there.
00:19:38Second down.
00:19:40And it's a defensive end getting off the ball quickly.
00:19:43Swarming to the football, making a tackle.
00:19:44That's what we saw right there.
00:19:46Yeah, that's what their job is.
00:19:47And really, a lot of the time, they have to throttle back a little bit in the run game because
00:19:51you know those defensive ends.
00:19:53They're like in a sprinter stance.
00:19:54They're just heading straight for the quarterback.
00:19:56That was good recognition on that play to hold them to no gain.
00:19:59Surveying the field.
00:20:01Sideline throw.
00:20:02It's complete.
00:20:03And a nice job there of keeping the toes inbounds.
00:20:07Let's make this one simple.
00:20:09What a catch.
00:20:10Especially the finishing part of getting his feet inbounds, toe tapping, and, of course, foot dragging.
00:20:17A little tapestry, if you will.
00:20:19Oh, I like it.
00:20:21Play number seven coming on this drive.
00:20:23It's third and inches.
00:20:33Now the first carry for Sean Drone.
00:20:36And he picks up the first down yardage as he takes this one down to the 15.
00:20:41I always appreciate runners who understand situations.
00:20:44That was just third and inches.
00:20:45No reason to dance around in the backfield and try and break off a bigger play.
00:20:49Just go pick up the first down, and that's exactly what he did.
00:20:57And the eighth play on this drive coming up.
00:21:09On first down, Kaepernick over the middle, and it's incomplete.
00:21:13He was looking there for Bruce Allington, and it's second down.
00:21:26So incomplete on first.
00:21:28Let's see what second down has in store.
00:21:39Back to the air on second down.
00:21:41It's Kaepernick.
00:21:42And he just chucked that one out of bounds, out of everyone's reach.
00:21:46Maybe a wise call not to take a sack in this part of the field.
00:21:49It brings up third down.
00:21:51Let's face it, you can run the route tree as many times as you want.
00:21:55Get in sync, practice it, do all those things.
00:21:58But once you get to game speed, it doesn't always time up quite that well.
00:22:02That one goes incomplete.
00:22:03An extra corner on the field for New England here on third down.
00:22:06Yeah, another DB.
00:22:08Kaepernick now to throw.
00:22:10Caught.
00:22:11It's Allington.
00:22:12Just a five-yard pickup, and it leads to fourth down.
00:22:17I think that completion takes the definition of dink and dunk to a different level, doesn't it?
00:22:22It does, and the defense was right there, kind of played into their hands.
00:22:29The Niners call on Phil Dawson now for the field goal try on fourth down.
00:22:42And the kick for the 41-year-old is up and good, and that will tie us at 3-3.
00:22:49And Charles, they get the field goal, took him a dozen plays, though.
00:22:52Work with me on this one.
00:22:54You know what I'm about to say, right?
00:22:56Bend but don't break.
00:22:57That's what came into play here for the defense.
00:23:00Twelve plays were run at them.
00:23:01They only gave up three points, and in a lot of ways, that's a win for the defense.
00:23:26So a tie ball game here as the kick's away.
00:23:33Well, the return now.
00:23:34Here's Keyshawn Martin.
00:23:37And a nice return sets him up pretty good here at the 30-yard line.
00:23:45Now the Patriot offense set to take over again.
00:23:48And last time they got three points, but it was a chip shot field goal.
00:23:52And when you go to the sideline after a chip shot field goal, maybe the offense not too happy.
00:23:56It's a balancing act, isn't it?
00:23:58Because you're exactly right.
00:23:59They're none too pleased that they didn't punch it in for six points.
00:24:02But they also have to remember, they did put points on the board.
00:24:05Three points is three points.
00:24:06And in this league, you take points when you can get them.
00:24:09Not easily done.
00:24:10Come tight!
00:24:11Come tight!
00:24:12They come out five wide.
00:24:15Three of them to the right side.
00:24:19On first down, Brady.
00:24:20He's going to leave this for his running back.
00:24:22It's complete.
00:24:23Six yards on the pickup, and that'll bring up second down.
00:24:27And at his size, he's a smaller back.
00:24:29You can get him to football.
00:24:31He can kind of get lost, make someone miss.
00:24:33It's good for him.
00:24:34Yeah, it's great for him.
00:24:36I like what you said there.
00:24:37Sometimes he gets lost in the traffic a little bit.
00:24:40But get him out in the open field into some space.
00:24:43Dad plays to his strengths the best and keeps him out of it where all the big boys are.
00:24:47You know, make someone miss in the open field.
00:24:51Brady to throw on second down.
00:24:53And he finds Danny Amendola.
00:24:55And getting this chest shy in midfield, they'll spot it at the 49.
00:25:00And the big crowd has run really well.
00:25:02That jab step off the line of scrimmage by the receiver,
00:25:05which is designed to back up the defender and give him a little bit of space.
00:25:08All you want there.
00:25:10Get that space, catch the football, and then make a move and pick up extra yardage.
00:25:14And that's exactly what he got done there.
00:25:24Blunt, the lone running back.
00:25:27He'll get the football here.
00:25:29And they go backwards here.
00:25:30They're losing yardage back at the 48-yard line.
00:25:34That's going to go as a loss of a yard, and it'll be second down.
00:25:38DeForest Buckner is a really tall defensive end slash defensive tackle.
00:25:42How about that move right there to get up field and make the play in the offensive backfield?
00:25:46Excellent leverage.
00:25:46You're right.
00:25:47Tall, big, 6'7", nearly 300 pounds.
00:25:57They fake the handoff.
00:25:59Now Brady.
00:26:02And he's going to be swallowed up.
00:26:04Sacked back at the 45-yard line.
00:26:07DeForest Buckner able to get him for a loss of about three.
00:26:11Well, Brandon, sometimes I think when we watch games, we're actually watching a living museum
00:26:15because we're seeing the evolution of positions almost with each passing game.
00:26:19How about defensive ends nowadays and the way that they can run almost all the way across the field?
00:26:24It is unbelievable.
00:26:25I mean, they're so strong, but they're so lean, they can move so quick with those bodies.
00:26:29It's almost unfair.
00:26:31You're supposed to be able to know where a defensive end is supposed to be on every play.
00:26:35These guys flash so quickly, you're not sure where they're going to end up.
00:26:42And the dreaded third and long here for the offense.
00:26:46It's a five-receiver set.
00:26:49Three to the left, two to the right.
00:26:53On third and long, it's Brady.
00:26:55Finding time.
00:26:57Under pressure, they got him again.
00:26:59Eric Armstead in there to drop him and back-to-back sacks now bring up fourth and long.
00:27:06Brandon, what I remember most about playing with guys who knew how to rush the passer,
00:27:10they would just tell you, just cover people for me, just long enough for me to get there.
00:27:15That's exactly what happened on that play.
00:27:28So on fourth down, the left foot at Ryan Allen to kick it away for the Pats.
00:27:33Bruce Ellington back deep for the Niners.
00:27:44And this is going to hit the goal line and continue on into the end zone for a touchback.
00:27:50The New England defense gearing up to take the field.
00:27:53And they did well down near the goal line last time, forcing him to settle for a short field goal.
00:27:58And in today's day and age, settling for a field goal of that distance is amazing.
00:28:03You can get three points now where it's going to give you only one point for the extra point,
00:28:06which will be a little bit longer.
00:28:08But they have to feel fantastic about only giving up three in that situation.
00:28:11It could have been so much worse.
00:28:13Yeah, could have.
00:28:14Now can they carry that over?
00:28:28Here's Hyde as they begin on the ground.
00:28:31And he'll find some space up to about the 25.
00:28:34Five yards on the carry.
00:28:36Good pickup on first down.
00:28:38And that's exactly what you want on a first down run.
00:28:40Pick up five yards.
00:28:42Bring up second and five.
00:28:43The defensive line, though, they've got to figure out a way to outleverage the guys up front
00:28:47because the offensive line is winning at the point of attack.
00:28:56They run it again with Hyde.
00:28:58And they'll take him down at the 31-yard line.
00:29:02So a field goal apiece.
00:29:03That's all we have here in this first quarter.
00:29:06Three all to score.
00:29:07And we'll return to Foxboro after this.
00:29:15Second quarter now.
00:29:16Brandon Gawd and Charles Davis with you.
00:29:18It's the 49ers in control of the football.
00:29:20And they've got it here with a first down.
00:29:45They'll run it now out of the gun.
00:29:48And he'll be tackled at about the 35.
00:29:51Five yards is the tally on first down.
00:29:54That brings up second and five.
00:29:56And there's a run to be happy with.
00:29:58Good, solid yardage.
00:29:59They'll take that any time you hand the ball to a back.
00:30:04Five yards left for the offense.
00:30:06It's second down.
00:30:14They'll run it now out of the gun.
00:30:16And he'll get this up to about the 40.
00:30:19After a gain of five,
00:30:21they'll wind up being about a length of the football short here on third down.
00:30:26Frustrating for a defense.
00:30:27Energizing for an offense.
00:30:29Finding a way to create that type of yardage in your running game.
00:30:32That'll make the guys carrying the ball very, very happy.
00:30:37And on third down, a nickel formation here defensively.
00:30:43They'll run it.
00:30:44Here's Hyde.
00:30:45And his play will be blown up.
00:30:47He'll lose yardage back at the 38.
00:30:50Losing two yards that time.
00:30:52And now it's fourth down.
00:30:54The third and inches.
00:30:55Trying to pick it up up the middle.
00:30:57He had nowhere to go tackle for a loss.
00:31:00And you know how we talk about double A gap pressure?
00:31:03Meaning linebackers going in the gap between the center and the guard on either side.
00:31:07Well, it's not always to get to the passer.
00:31:09Sometimes you do that to prevent a running play.
00:31:13Worked pretty well in that situation.
00:31:17He gets this one away.
00:31:18And boy, it's another boomer.
00:31:22And that is much too long.
00:31:24That's into the end zone for a touchback.
00:31:28And now out come the Patriots.
00:31:30And a tight game after punting last time.
00:31:33See if they can get something going on this drive.
00:31:36As they head to the field now.
00:31:38With a game this close.
00:31:40You've got to feel there's a sense of urgency for them going on offense right now.
00:31:44But they have to do it without letting panic creep in and affect their play.
00:32:01They start on the ground here with Klon.
00:32:03And the window closes quickly.
00:32:05He'll only get up to the 22-yard line.
00:32:08Give him a couple on the carry there.
00:32:09Second and eight.
00:32:10That's a good play by the guys on the defensive side of the ball.
00:32:13Held him to a gain of two.
00:32:15And that changes the playbook a little bit now for the guy calling plays.
00:32:19Second and eight.
00:32:20Now he's got to probably think about going to the air instead of maybe staying with the ground game.
00:32:28Blunt, the lone running back.
00:32:31To throw is Brady.
00:32:33To the left side and complete for Julian Edelman.
00:32:3611 yards for number 11.
00:32:40And a nice pitch and catch to pick up the reception against man coverage.
00:32:45Both of them read how much yardage they needed.
00:32:47Figured what they had to do.
00:32:49And were able to beat the man coverage for the completion.
00:33:02Now a play fake here on first down.
00:33:07He couldn't quite hold it.
00:33:09Got hit.
00:33:10Ball pops out.
00:33:11Incomplete.
00:33:13Oh man.
00:33:14For him to be that wide open and drop it.
00:33:18Sometimes you have just too much time on your hands, right?
00:33:20You end up thinking way too much.
00:33:22And your hands get shaky.
00:33:24And yes, he's a tight end.
00:33:25But that's a catch he should have made.
00:33:34On play action.
00:33:35Now Brady.
00:33:38And he's just going to get rid of this thing.
00:33:40To no one here.
00:33:41He throws it away.
00:33:42And now it's third.
00:33:44Not too many things get to a quarterback of this magnitude.
00:33:47But I think it's safe to say that pressure can get to any quarterback.
00:33:51Now he's obviously a great franchise quarterback.
00:33:54But felt the pressure.
00:33:55Threw it incomplete.
00:33:56Third down here for the offense after the incomplete pass.
00:34:012-20.
00:34:02We got three.
00:34:03We got three.
00:34:06Throwing is Brady on third down.
00:34:08And he'll have his man.
00:34:10That's Edelman.
00:34:11They're 13 yards that time at a first.
00:34:15I don't care how many times we see it.
00:34:17I still get a kick out of watching quarterbacks and receivers do the pass trait in pregame warm-up.
00:34:22But I always remember that when we go to practices, we see that after practices as well.
00:34:27They really tune it up, don't they?
00:34:29They tune it up.
00:34:29They know why they do it for these situations.
00:34:32First down.
00:34:32And they build that trust.
00:34:34And that's why they're able to find him in this type of a situation.
00:34:3620 by 20 by 20.
00:34:39Now blood.
00:34:42And able to push his way forward here for a good little game.
00:34:46Seven yards on the pickup there.
00:34:47And it'll leave him with a second and three.
00:34:50This drive is turning to an extended one.
00:34:52And the guy carrying the ball, he's becoming more like a body blowers guy.
00:34:56Every carry is putting some damage on the defense.
00:34:59So after a while, I'm not too sure how many guys are going to want to run up and tackle
00:35:03him.
00:35:03And here comes play number six on this drive.
00:35:0629, 29.
00:35:11Now Brady throwing on second down.
00:35:14Throwing middle, but it's incomplete.
00:35:16He was looking for Julian Edelman that time.
00:35:19And it's third and short.
00:35:29Seventh play in the drive now as they come up on a third and three.
00:35:3612.
00:35:36Wow.
00:35:37My 20.
00:35:39Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
00:35:41Brady going to try and throw on third down.
00:35:44But it's brought in by Washington.
00:35:46Five yards is the pickup there as that extends this drive.
00:35:50And that's understanding where the markers are because it's not just running to them.
00:35:55Because on the catch, you can actually be pushed back before the first down.
00:35:59It's getting past it and allowing that opportunity to drip back towards the first down line and still having picked
00:36:06it up.
00:36:06Really well run.
00:36:07Hey, hey, hey.
00:36:08We've got three.
00:36:09We've got three.
00:36:09Three there.
00:36:10Three down.
00:36:10We've got eight.
00:36:11We've got eight.
00:36:12Let's go.
00:36:13Let's go.
00:36:14Give it in.
00:36:15They go play action here on first down.
00:36:18And Gronkowski's got it.
00:36:19Complete over the middle.
00:36:21Give him nine there on the first down completion.
00:36:25Seeing that play and understanding just how tough it is to cover tight ends, especially the ones running around the
00:36:30NFL nowadays, makes me glad I didn't make it in that league.
00:36:33I went on a really difficult time.
00:36:36But now you get to sit up here with me.
00:36:37Yeah, and that's fun, isn't it?
00:36:39And what a really nice game right there on first down for them.
00:36:42Brings up a nice second down for them.
00:36:48Again, it's Brady.
00:36:51He's got time.
00:36:52And seeing nowhere to throw, he chucks this one away from harm.
00:36:56Incomplete.
00:36:57Now it's third down.
00:37:08And the seemingly endless drive continues.
00:37:20Brady to throw on third and one.
00:37:22And this is going to be incomplete.
00:37:25Danny Amendola, that was the intended target.
00:37:28And it's fourth down.
00:37:29On third and one, I think everyone in the stadium thought they'd try and run the football there.
00:37:33But they tried to surprise the defense and hit something through the air.
00:37:36Instead, it results in an incompletion.
00:37:38Gostkowski now for the Pats' field goal try.
00:37:41On the right hash.
00:37:42Officially, this will be a 51-yard attempt.
00:37:51And the 10-year bet knocks it to the goal post.
00:37:54And they will take the lead here in this battle of field goals.
00:37:57It's 6-3.
00:37:59A little bit of a lower trajectory there on the deep kick.
00:38:02And it worked.
00:38:03Had to do it because he had to drive it out low because of the length of the kick.
00:38:07Able to do that.
00:38:08Got it above the defense.
00:38:09And over the post.
00:38:36Gostkowski now converted for three.
00:38:38Now he'll kick this one away.
00:38:42On the return, here's DeAndre White.
00:38:45And he'll be brought down at the 23.
00:38:47Make it the 24-yard line.
00:38:53And San Francisco gets set to go here.
00:38:57And last time out, they had to punt the football away.
00:38:59Anything positive possibly to take from that?
00:39:02There always is when you're punting the football away.
00:39:05It doesn't sound like it because you're giving it up.
00:39:07But you've avoided a mistake.
00:39:09At least you didn't turn it over, I guess.
00:39:11You didn't turn it over.
00:39:12Right?
00:39:12You're giving your defense a chance because you're punting the ball away.
00:39:16And they're set to go on the field as opposed to sudden change after a turnover.
00:39:21Wow.
00:39:21Now we've got to go out there and stop people.
00:39:23So, yeah.
00:39:23There's always something Bob's would be gained from it.
00:39:29They strike the drive with Hyde.
00:39:31And he'll wind up with about six.
00:39:33Up past the 30 to the 31.
00:39:37First play of the drive.
00:39:38Let's give credit all around.
00:39:39Excellent blocking.
00:39:41But the guy carrying the ball, he was the finisher.
00:39:43A really nice run.
00:39:53Let him know, let him know.
00:39:54Let him know, let him know.
00:39:58Easy, easy, easy.
00:40:02Again, it's Hyde.
00:40:05The five yards on the play there.
00:40:07The drive will continue.
00:40:09So many teams want to throw the ball in this situation nowadays.
00:40:12But I love watching a team that has enough confidence to go ahead and run the football in that situation.
00:40:17That's almost a tendency breaker.
00:40:25So here we go.
00:40:27First and ten now.
00:40:28All right.
00:40:28All right.
00:40:31Hey, 91.
00:40:3391.
00:40:35No running now.
00:40:37Out of the gun.
00:40:37So quick on the spin.
00:40:39He's spinning, man.
00:40:41Give him five on the carry there.
00:40:42And it'll be second down.
00:40:45Offensive linemen love creating space for their guys carrying the ball.
00:40:48But when that guy also breaks tackles and creates extra yardage,
00:40:52they almost feel like he's one of them.
00:40:54And they really embrace it.
00:40:58Let's go.
00:40:59Let's go.
00:41:01Let's go.
00:41:03Let's go.
00:41:04Let's go.
00:41:05Let's go.
00:41:05Let's go.
00:41:06Let's go.
00:41:06Let's go.
00:41:06Let's go.
00:41:06Let's go.
00:41:07Go right.
00:41:08Go right.
00:41:11Go right.
00:41:12Go right.
00:41:16They'll run it now.
00:41:18Out of the gun.
00:41:19Oh, he breaks a tackle, and he's got an alley.
00:41:22And he'll be taken down, but not before he gets into enemy territory.
00:41:28There's no doubt that his size is a factor, but I've seen a lot of big running backs in the
00:41:32league not have that kind of impact.
00:41:34Because they don't run like a big back, because they don't run like a big back should get behind their
00:41:38pads, as they like to say, lower center of gravity, and knock people backwards.
00:41:42Sometimes they run too upright and take too many hits.
00:41:45Not this guy.
00:41:46He knows how to get low, break tackles, and gain additional yardage.
00:41:50Watch tight end.
00:41:51Watch tight end.
00:41:52Touch right.
00:41:53Touch right.
00:41:55Touch right.
00:41:58Touch right.
00:41:59Touch right.
00:42:00Touch right.
00:42:02Touch right.
00:42:03Touch right.
00:42:13He levels right along that play so fast that I think if the running back even had time to notice
00:42:17if anyone was there, it was just a blink of an eye and there was a loss on the play.
00:42:31Watch the swing, watch the swing!
00:42:36Let's go!
00:42:37Go!
00:42:38Go!
00:42:38Go!
00:42:38Do it!
00:42:39They'll keep it in the hands of Drone.
00:42:42And he'll get it inside the 40 to the 39.
00:42:45That one good for 10 yards.
00:42:48And that'll bring up a third and one.
00:42:50Look, the first down marker is out there,
00:42:52but sometimes it's hard to find for an offense
00:42:54when they're in a long yardage situation,
00:42:56which usually means throw the football.
00:42:58In this case, it went against the tendency and ran it.
00:43:02And boy, the reward was there.
00:43:03A big, big pickup.
00:43:06And guess what?
00:43:07It's now third and very short
00:43:09in order to try and pick up a first down.
00:43:14Someone moved.
00:43:15Flag is out.
00:43:16That's going to be five yards.
00:43:17And that'll drive coaches crazy.
00:43:19You work all week on dealing with loud crowds,
00:43:21on dealing with motion,
00:43:22and then you have a guy jump.
00:43:27Still third down.
00:43:41And the line to gain here is the 37 on third down.
00:43:53On third and long, it's Kaepernick.
00:43:55He'll try and set up the screen.
00:43:57It's complete.
00:43:58And he is going to lose yardage here.
00:44:01He lost two, and it brings up four.
00:44:05I love the intelligence the defense has showed there.
00:44:09Read their keys, saw the screen developing,
00:44:12ran to it, and smothered it.
00:44:14What a third down stop by them.
00:44:27Here's Bradley Pinion now,
00:44:29as he's on to punt for San Francisco.
00:44:38He's been a busy man here in this first half
00:44:40as he gets it away.
00:44:42Had a bit of a mistake there.
00:44:43This is well into the end zone for a touchback.
00:44:47We get a look now at the 49ers defense
00:44:50as they get into position.
00:44:51And even though that last drive yielded points,
00:44:53it was a long field goal,
00:44:55so they probably weren't too upset about it.
00:44:57Although here, obviously, they'd like to give up zero.
00:44:59Of course.
00:45:00That's the goal each and every time out.
00:45:02But when they make that type of a field goal that long,
00:45:06you almost give a little nod of respect to the kicker,
00:45:08like congratulations.
00:45:09But you do feel pretty good about not giving up anything big.
00:45:12Yeah, and we'll see if they can not give up anything big on this drive.
00:45:25Brady now on first down.
00:45:27And he's got Edelman on the out route.
00:45:29That's complete.
00:45:29And he's going to get this one across the 30-yard line.
00:45:33A nice pick up there of 11 yards,
00:45:35and it'll move the sticks.
00:45:37And a good quarterback facing zone coverage.
00:45:40If he has just a little bit of time to survey the scene,
00:45:42that's what's going to happen.
00:45:43No doubt about it.
00:45:44If there's no pressure, he's going to continue to pick them apart
00:45:47because he'll have all that time to find someone open downfield
00:45:51who can only cover for so long.
00:45:53So maybe they want to go to a zone blitz scheme,
00:45:55get a little bit more pressure.
00:45:57Remember when Carolina did that against Denver?
00:45:59They lost the game ultimately.
00:46:00They dropped the defense again down,
00:46:02and he ended up with an interception in that game in Super Bowl 50.
00:46:05Maybe some sort of scheme like that
00:46:07to try and get more pressure at the passer.
00:46:09And it pops free.
00:46:11The collision there jarred the ball loose
00:46:13and brings up second down.
00:46:16Well, they went for the big play there,
00:46:17but that drop could really hurt their momentum.
00:46:24Second down here after the incomplete pass.
00:46:33Blunt, the lone running back.
00:46:36Now Brady.
00:46:38And he dumps it off to Blunt.
00:46:40And he's going to lose yardage and be backed up to the 25.
00:46:44It goes as a loss of six.
00:46:47And now third down.
00:46:49That play is well covered.
00:46:50We just tried to check it down.
00:46:51Unfortunately, we're not able to find any yardage on that one.
00:47:11And some secondary help here for the defense
00:47:14and the nickel on third and long.
00:47:17Now Brady again.
00:47:21And that is incomplete.
00:47:23James White, the man he was looking for out of the backfield.
00:47:26And it's fourth down.
00:47:28And there was a good opportunity to just want to ride there.
00:47:30A drop pass.
00:47:31I guess that's why they call them running backs
00:47:33and not catching backs.
00:47:54Here's Ryan Allen now.
00:47:57On for his second punt.
00:47:58He'd take a repeat of his first.
00:48:09Fair catch signal for and taken just shy of the 30-yard line.
00:48:13So a change of possession here on the punt.
00:48:16And the Niners will go on offense first and 10.
00:48:20And San Francisco gets set to go here.
00:48:23And they'll be looking to avoid what happened last time,
00:48:25which is punting the football.
00:48:28But when you look at how teams play the game,
00:48:30that complimentary football comes into play.
00:48:33How do I take care of my defense?
00:48:35How do I take care of my offense?
00:48:36Well, the defense is taking care of them in a lot of ways.
00:48:40Now it's time for the offense to jump things up
00:48:42and help their defense out, give them a little bit of rest.
00:48:44Yeah, time for them to give them a rest.
00:48:46Took the words right out of my mouth.
00:48:50They'll run it now out of the gun.
00:48:52A beautiful fake.
00:48:54And they'll get it up just short of the 45 at the 44.
00:48:59They'll get 16 yards there.
00:49:01And it'll be a San Francisco first down.
00:49:05Really good, skillful, tough running throughout this contest.
00:49:08Picked up first down after first down.
00:49:11He's got to have a nickname, doesn't he?
00:49:12How about the human first down machine?
00:49:14I think that fits.
00:49:15So they pick up the first down after the run,
00:49:17and now they approach for the fresh set.
00:49:25On first down, Kaepernick.
00:49:27Caught.
00:49:27It's Ellington.
00:49:29And he'll be taken down across the 50 at the 45 at enemy territory.
00:49:35Well, coaches always talk about finding balance on offense.
00:49:38I think you can get much more balance than this.
00:49:40Big-time run, big-time pass.
00:49:42A little one-two combination.
00:49:44Looked pretty good.
00:49:45How about that?
00:49:46Let's see if they can continue to take that kind of a punch, though.
00:49:53First down and 10 now for the offensive group.
00:50:05Another choke for the afternoon workhorse.
00:50:08It's high.
00:50:09Give him free on first down.
00:50:11It'll set up a second and seven.
00:50:14We always like to talk about defense in terms of levels.
00:50:17First-level defensive line, second-level linebackers, third-level defensive backs.
00:50:22On that run, that was what we call a first-level run, and it was stopped by a second-level
00:50:27player.
00:50:33Now Kaepernick throwing on second down.
00:50:36And that's complete.
00:50:37It's Allington.
00:50:39Four yards on the completion, and it sets up a third down.
00:50:42Never make the mistake that the slot receivers, especially the little guys like we're watching here,
00:50:46are just quicker than fast.
00:50:48A lot of them combine quickness and speed, and they catch a lot of footballs as we just saw there.
00:50:55Two minutes to go here in the first half.
00:50:59Back to Foxboro after this.
00:51:11We remind you that coming up at halftime, we'll take you to Orlando and Larry Ridley.
00:51:17Larry will have highlights and analysis of this first half.
00:51:21I'm guessing mostly defensive highlights that we will see.
00:51:24Yeah, that's kind of cool.
00:51:25No touchdowns scored yet so far.
00:51:27Yeah, none whatsoever.
00:51:35The Patriots going with a dime package here.
00:51:37Two extra defensive backs on third.
00:51:41Throwing is Kaepernick on third down.
00:51:43Now they go screen.
00:51:44It's complete.
00:51:48It's a gain of 20 and picking up the first.
00:51:54Let's give a little credit there.
00:51:56The offensive play caller sense that the screen pass was available.
00:51:59Whenever you're getting a lot of heavy pressure towards your quarterback,
00:52:02that's when you're thinking about running the screen and using that pressure against the defense.
00:52:07And it worked very well there for a first down.
00:52:14And the offense lining up first and 10.
00:52:25Into the red zone now.
00:52:27Kaepernick.
00:52:27They go screen pass to Hyde.
00:52:30Spins past another.
00:52:31My man.
00:52:32A nice pickup of 14.
00:52:34And it moves the stick.
00:52:36Sets up a first and goal.
00:52:38They ran that one well.
00:52:39And not only did they pick up a nice chunk of yardage on the screen,
00:52:42they sent a message to the defense.
00:52:44Rush the passer all you want.
00:52:46But you better be careful.
00:52:47We can hit you going back the other direction.
00:52:54Go.
00:52:55Go.
00:52:59Go.
00:53:00Go.
00:53:02Go.
00:53:14Again, they'll throw with Kaepernick.
00:53:17And it's complete.
00:53:18In the end zone, touchdown, 49ers.
00:53:22Torrey Smith from four yards out.
00:53:26And once again, the 49ers are back out in front.
00:53:30And all about timing there on that short slant, Charles.
00:53:34Exactly right.
00:53:35That was timed up so well.
00:53:37The route.
00:53:37The throw.
00:53:38Touchdown.
00:53:45Here's Phil Dawson now for the point after.
00:53:53And he's got it as the lead is now 10-6.
00:54:00So that drives seven plays in length.
00:54:03And it's polished off by a touchdown for San Francisco.
00:54:07Let's go!
00:54:39After the touchdown, it's Dawson on to kick it away.
00:54:45Let's just feel it at the goal line.
00:54:49And he'll take this across the 25, couple extra yards, up to the 27-yard line.
00:54:57And the Patriots gearing up to go now.
00:55:00And on the last go-around, they really couldn't get anything going.
00:55:03They had to punt from deep inside their own territory,
00:55:05which means they're going to lose the field position battle as a general rule.
00:55:09What they're looking for now is a little more consistency,
00:55:12move the ball at least a few times on offense,
00:55:15get a couple of first downs, and hopefully flip the field.
00:55:17Yeah, just something to build off of. That's what they're looking for here.
00:55:22Here we go!
00:55:25Here we go!
00:55:27Here we go!
00:55:28Here we go!
00:55:28Here we go!
00:55:29Stop your body!
00:55:30Here!
00:55:35Here!
00:55:36Here!
00:55:36Here!
00:55:37Here!
00:55:37Going on first down is Brady.
00:55:39Brady.
00:55:39On the crossing route, that's caught.
00:55:41Julian Edelman.
00:55:42And able to get this one across the 45 before he's brought down.
00:55:48Looking to speed things up here, going with some tempo.
00:55:52Brady now on first down.
00:55:55And seeing no options, he just tosses this one away incomplete.
00:56:00Now that'll bring up second down.
00:56:02When defenses get to the quarterback that quickly,
00:56:05a lot of times it's called a jailbreak.
00:56:07It wasn't quite that fast, but fast enough that he had no time to look downfield
00:56:11and set himself to throw the ball.
00:56:13And as he tried to do that, he was hit and it forced an incompletion.
00:56:21Brady will try again on second down.
00:56:24He's got time in the pocket.
00:56:26Dumps it off to Lewis.
00:56:28And he'll be brought down at the 48-yard line.
00:56:31Now whistles come in.
00:56:33We're going to get a timeout here by the offense.
00:56:36It's just their first, so they'll have two remaining here before we get to halftime.
00:56:44And we are back here.
00:56:45I'm Brandon Gordon alongside Charles Davis.
00:56:47So the offense takes the timeout.
00:56:49And now we're set to get going.
00:57:03And he's got one.
00:57:05Three.
00:57:05Three, two, three!
00:57:09Three, two, three.
00:57:12Three.
00:57:13Three to throw again.
00:57:14And Amendola with a catch.
00:57:17And they're able to get this one down to the 25.
00:57:21Now hold everything here.
00:57:23We're going to get a timeout by the offense.
00:57:25So that means they're down to one remaining here as we head toward halftime.
00:57:36So the offense took the timeout.
00:57:38Looks like they're ready to go as we get set to resume the action.
00:58:05Looking to jam the receivers at the line here.
00:58:08Press coverage.
00:58:09Look defensively.
00:58:16Brady now on first down.
00:58:19Surveying the field.
00:58:20And he'll toss this one incomplete.
00:58:23Seeing no options, he throws it away.
00:58:26I hope I don't sound too rah-rah on that one, but that's the exact right throw.
00:58:30Either your receiver gets it or no one gets it.
00:58:33Give him a lot of credit for being really precise with it.
00:58:36Got rid of it.
00:58:37No one got it.
00:58:38Unable to connect on the first down.
00:58:39Pass play.
00:58:40Now it's second down.
00:58:47Again, it's Brady.
00:58:49Finding time.
00:58:51Over the middle, it's Amendola.
00:58:53Six yards is the pickup, and that'll lead to a third down.
00:58:57An extra defensive back in the game now here for third and four.
00:59:02Again, they'll throw with Brady.
00:59:05And he'll have his man.
00:59:06That's Adelman.
00:59:07And he's able to pick up the first down before his tackle right at the ten.
00:59:12Now whistles come in.
00:59:14We're going to get a timeout here by the offense.
00:59:17And with halftime on the horizon, they'll be out of timeouts from here forward.
00:59:24And we're back.
00:59:25The offense had a chance to talk things over.
00:59:27We'll see what they come up with here on this next play.
00:59:53Now a play fake here on first down.
00:59:56He's got time.
00:59:58Oh, and it's incomplete.
00:59:59That would have been big in the end zone if he could have held on.
01:00:03Instead, it's second down.
01:00:06Not only did they drop, but it looked like an interception in the end zone.
01:00:09They blew a golden opportunity to shift the momentum.
01:00:23So the incomplete pass brings up second down.
01:00:29We've got three.
01:00:30We've got three, fellas.
01:00:35On play action.
01:00:37It's Brady.
01:00:38And that is incomplete.
01:00:41Seven seconds remaining.
01:01:02So they're coming up here on the ninth play of the drive.
01:01:05And it's third and goal.
01:01:13Now Brady again.
01:01:16Dumps it off to Lewis.
01:01:18And he showed off the athletic juke.
01:01:21Good little game there.
01:01:22Not a whole lot of real estate, but a nice carry.
01:01:28Thanks, Brandon.
01:01:29I'm Larry Ridley.
01:01:30And welcome to our EA Halftime Report.
01:01:32The Patriots trail at home at halftime.
01:01:35The 49ers will want to come out after the half and really put the pressure on from the start.
01:01:42So here we go.
01:01:43Let's take a look at some of the highlights from the first half.
01:01:50First and ten.
01:01:52Brady's going to complete the pass.
01:01:53And it's going to end up going for a gain of 37.
01:01:57Third and long.
01:01:59Armstance is going to get the quarterback here.
01:02:01This ends up as a loss of nine.
01:02:1149ers on first and five.
01:02:13Kaepernick's going to find his mark.
01:02:15And it's going to be caught for the touchdown.
01:02:17They're now on top by four.
01:02:20Second half still to come.
01:02:22Let's get back up to Foxborough with Brandon and Charles.
01:03:01So both teams have their marching orders and we'll get going again here in quarter number three.
01:03:08This is fielded a couple yards deep.
01:03:20The Patriot offense now set to come back out onto the field.
01:03:24They're down here but very much in this game.
01:03:26What's the tonality of a coach's talk when a game is within striking distance like this at intermission?
01:03:32Typically what they're doing is emphasizing the things that went well in the first half and wanting more of that.
01:03:39Sure, you've got to go over some of the errors and clean up some things because there's a reason you're
01:03:43down.
01:03:43But overall, I think they want to stay positive.
01:03:46Stay up with this team.
01:03:47We're just starting the second half and we've got the football.
01:03:51Let's go ahead and punch it in and then we'll take it from there.
01:03:53See how that recipe works.
01:03:56He'll begin here with blocks.
01:03:59And oh, a little spin cycle.
01:04:01Room to run now.
01:04:03And he'll be taken down but not before he gets into enemy territory.
01:04:08A very solid gain of 27.
01:04:12Sometimes it's hard to believe, but there are times this game is about patience, isn't it?
01:04:17Has had the game he expected, but that run there, that may get him going.
01:04:21I was just going to say, maybe that gives him a little juice because you're right.
01:04:23He struggled, especially in that first half.
01:04:25Yeah, and I know the great ones always think to themselves, just hang in there.
01:04:29I'm just one big carry away from busting this open.
01:04:32That's a good start for him.
01:04:48Brady now on first down.
01:04:50He couldn't quite hold it.
01:04:52Got hit.
01:04:53Ball pops out.
01:04:54Incomplete.
01:04:56Whenever I see a drop like that, I have to kind of take a step back and check myself a
01:05:00little bit.
01:05:01So used to seeing those big guys make big-time spectacular plays that when they drop one,
01:05:06I have to remind myself, we ask a lot out of these guys.
01:05:09Block and catch the football?
01:05:11Not easily done in today's NFL.
01:05:14By 20.
01:05:14By 20.
01:05:15Hit.
01:05:17Hit.
01:05:17Hit.
01:05:17Brady again here on second and 10.
01:05:20Slant route.
01:05:21Caught by Edelman.
01:05:22That catch good for five.
01:05:23It's third down.
01:05:25Slant route's effective no matter who's running the route and catching the ball.
01:05:28But when you have a receiver of that stature, you have to be a little bit more precise throwing it.
01:05:32You don't have the same catch radius with the bigger targets.
01:05:40So completion on second down.
01:05:42That brings up third.
01:05:45Hey, hey, hey.
01:05:46Got three.
01:05:46Got three.
01:05:47Wait, 20.
01:05:48Wait, 20.
01:05:49We got...
01:05:51Shotgun now for Brady.
01:05:53And he's got Bennett.
01:05:55And he's able to pick up the first down here before he goes down at the 20-sids.
01:06:02And there's another completion to the tight end.
01:06:05And let's face it, it is hard to overthrow a 6'6'' target.
01:06:09It is indeed.
01:06:10Quarterbacks like their speed guys.
01:06:11They like that huge 6'6'' target that they've got in him.
01:06:14They really do.
