01:11You talk to opponents, and they always use the same phrase.
01:14Matchup nightmare, this guy.
01:15Well, what stands out to me with this guy is it's not very often, you're right, that defensive
01:19coordinators are most concerned about a tight end.
01:21But in this case, that is exactly what we're dealing with.
01:24This guy can hurt you in so many different ways.
01:27I think it's important to let your quarterback get into a rhythm early in the game.
01:32Sure, you'd love to see the big gains, but plays like this allow the quarterback to get
01:36settled into the game, find his rhythm, and then he can make the bigger plays later on.

01:46And he just throws it away there.

02:44All right, Kirk, let's take a quick look at the impact players for today's game and how
02:47they're going to affect the outcome.
02:49These are your leaders on the field and in the locker room.
02:51These are your go-to guys, not only when you need a play to be made, but also when you
02:56need somebody to rally your team.
02:58Takes it out to the 44.
02:59That's good for a first down.
03:01This is exactly how this offense envisioned this game getting started, is having opportunities
03:07to be able to crease this defense and hit big plays.
03:11Now let's see what they can do off of it.
03:14It's early, but this crowd is fired up.

03:19This is going to be tough for the visitors today.
03:22Quick throw.
03:22That's an RPO caught on the left side.
03:24And the defense swarms not much of a gain on that completion.
03:28Well, any time an offensive coordinator calls a wide receiver screen, he's trying to get
03:33offensive linemen out in front of the receiver to create a wall so that receiver can pick
03:38a lane to run through.
03:39How about the defense here, though?
03:41That's called team pursuit and swarming to the football.
03:44They didn't give him any lanes, so not much yards downfield for the receiver.
03:49He's tackled just short of the midfield line at the 49.
04:01Solid gain in the running play.

04:10Look at the flow for the first down.
04:11He eludes the rush.

09:03They'll stop him behind the line for a loss and one.
09:07What makes a really good counter play is selling it to the defense.
09:11You're going to go one way, and then handing it off in the opposite direction.
09:15But if you don't sell it, you're just giving the defense more time to see what's going on.
09:19They can come up and make the tackle, just like you saw there.
09:22Offense coming to the line.
09:24They might have a chance for a couple more plays before we reach the end of the quarter.
09:28They bring the heat and get him behind the line.

10:26This group is coming off a quick three and out.

10:39And I thought the patience by the quarterback was the key.

11:39I wouldn't be surprised if they keep going back to the well.

13:17And the kick is good.

13:25I was watching this guy in pregame.

13:30I'm surprised here he's able to put three points up here for the offense.

13:59That's where the drive will start.

14:03They're coming off a three and out, looking to produce a positive drive here.

16:29This is the last time you didn't see LSU have defensive linemen who can make life difficult for quarterbacks and
16:35offensive linemen.
16:36Because I can't.
16:36They always have big boys who are athletic to make life difficult in that backfield.
16:41The clock has stopped.
16:43We've reached the two-minute warning before halftime.
16:51They're backed up here trying to make something happen on third and long.

16:59We're going to throw for the first down.
17:01Pressure comes and once again, no escape.
17:04And now the defense will call a timeout here to make an adjustment on their side before this crucial play.

18:18the quarterback knows he's got to be able to get the ball out of his hands quickly.

18:40We talk strategy.
18:41That's good timing there.
18:42Receiver makes the catch, and it has some room to run.
18:44Yeah, any time you're going to run a route like this, you know who needs to get a lot of
18:48credit is the offensive line.
18:50Because this play takes some time for the receiver to work his way across the field on that drag route.
18:55And the quarterback that time had enough time to be able to navigate the coverage and make the accurate throw.
19:01So a positive play, Kirk, with the crossing route.
19:03This is the defensive communication the coaches were worried about in this game.
19:07Yeah, it really is a challenge in this call.
19:10When the offense goes with that deep crosser, that defense has to do a good job of communicating, really keeping
19:15their head on a swivel to understand who's coming into their zone.
19:19That time they just lost the receiver, and they gave up the big game.
19:22The pass rush closing in.
19:24The offense will now quickly spend a timeout.
19:27A really good job by this defense.
19:29The quarterback looked to be trying to work through his progressions to find his open receiver.
19:34But before he knew it, he's on his back.
19:40And with nobody open, he chooses to just throw it away.

21:27And guess what?
21:28Based on the comparison between third down conversion rate today and the average yard per play,
21:33how can you argue that?
21:35I mean, the low-lying fruit is to look at some of the explosive plays we've seen and panic.
21:40But really, this game is going to come down to which team is more efficient when they have the ball
21:45and how they play when it matters most.
21:49Either way, it's time to find out.
21:51Back to the best in the biz for the start of this third quarter.
22:10The kickoff team out there now to get the second half underway.
22:18They'll return it from inside the 10-yard line.
22:21They'll be tackled at the 27.
22:24That's where the drive will start.
22:25And the Arizona State offense comes back on the field.
22:28Important possession here to begin the third quarter
22:30as they try to continue momentum from the first half and build on this lead.
22:35Receiver brought down after a short pitch and catch.
22:39Great execution on the RPO.
22:41Quarterback does a nice job as he's putting the ball into the belly of the back,
22:45making sure to read his key.
22:47This defense was determined.
22:48They came up to stop the run.
22:50Quarterback saw it, pulled it out,
22:52hit the quick slant right behind it for some great yards.
22:56They'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one.
22:59Well, they run it right into a blitz,
23:01and that linebacker was coming downhill, Kirk.
23:04Man, what a time to call that blitz here by the defense coordinator.

23:09Really, the back had nowhere to go.

23:56This has been an uphill battle for both offenses.

24:11And when you talk about LSU and you talk about the history,

24:19You know that when LSU is really dangerous,
24:22they get consistent play from the quarterback.
24:24It doesn't have to be Burrow,
24:25but just a guy that can be efficient,
24:27be a good leader, and complement the running game.
24:29And right now, you're starting to see that from this team.
24:32Good completion.
24:33Now, can you do it consistently?
24:35Because if you can,
24:36with the athletes they have around that position,
24:39they become a real threat.
24:45Still looking for that elusive touchdown,
24:48but finally this offense is moving.
24:50First down and 10.
24:57Off the RPO, caught to the right.
24:59And he's brought down,
25:01but not before he gets first down yardage.
25:04You know, each receiver brings something
25:05a little bit different to the table, Chris.
25:08To me, the outside receivers
25:09usually a little bit longer, taller guys.
25:11You get those slot receivers in the inside.
25:14Not only can they make the catch,
25:16but they have quickness to make plays after the catch.
25:19Right example of that right here.
25:22They'll try the option play here.
25:25Pitch to the back.
25:27And they bring him down,
25:29but not before he picks up the first.
25:32Good execution on the option.
25:34Boy, how about that play, Chris?
25:35That thing just opened up the back shot through there
25:38with great acceleration.
25:39What a pickup there on first down.

27:05Catch made on the out route.
27:06And the runner steps out of bounds,
27:08but does have enough yardage to pick up the first down.
27:12You call a quick out on third down,
27:14I think that tells you the confidence you have
27:16in a quarterback to be able to make that throw.
27:19And on top of that, a little surprise the defense
27:21would give that kind of cushion
27:22to be able to give him room to pick up that first down.
27:26And looking to throw now on first down.
27:29Caught over the middle.
27:30And a nice first down game there.
27:32They get him down, but very close to the first down marker.
27:36How about the arm strength from this quarterback?
27:38He really didn't have any other option
27:40than to put it right in there
27:42and give it everything that he had.
27:44Great timing and a good job of squeezing that in
27:47between the defenders.
27:51And from the shotgun, an inside handoff.
27:53The Sun Devils make up enough for a first down.
27:58Look, I realize on any play call
28:00when it's properly executed,
28:01it can go to the house for a touchdown.
28:03But the runs that really make a game plan work
28:06are the ones where you get just what you need.
28:08And he barely got the first down, but he got it.
28:12And the Sun Devils are looking to keep this drive going.
28:16Here comes a first down pass attempt.
28:19Receiver makes the catch.
28:21Defense surrounds him.
28:23Just a short game on that completion.
28:25This is an example of a quarterback in his offense
28:28just taking what the defense gives you.
28:31Not a huge play, but positive yards.

28:38stay ahead of the sticks.
